Title: Possible future project.. What is the 'best' hair?
Post by: wystearya on November 23, 2016, 03:09:17 PM
I'm looking to possibly make something in the near-ish future, and I am hoping to get some help on finding good hair!

I know that at one time Dolly hair was supposed to be the best.  But, if my memory serves me, I remember it could look oily at times.  I don't want oily looking hair.  :P

I am wanting nice soft brushable type hair.  I love the hair type on some of the Monster High dolls, specifically I love the type that Spectra and a few other dolls have.  It is *super* soft and silky!  If possible something close to that type would be awesome!

Any tips or opinions, pics, etc. are all very welcome!   ^.^

Thanks!!

Monster high dolls like spectra and venus use kanekalon hair, otherwise they usually have saran hair.  I know dollyhair sells the doll grade kanekalon, I don't know about other suppliers.  That hair is finicky, however, be sure to wet the hair down when working with it.

Saran is the softer one, the DH nylon could be washed to get rid of the oily look.. though I haven't bought from them in years so I don't really know what it's like now

Thank you both very much!

I am still considering my options, so if anyone else wants to weigh in, please do!

I only use nylon hair and I found that depending on the seller the outcome is not the same. For me, for now, the best hair for ponies is dolly hair's, i tried others but it ended being too thick and my ponies became punk. Not what i was planning for....

I use nylon :) I always wash the hair and style once I've rehaired it to get rid of any residue.

Saran is very soft and silky, but it can be limp and hard to style IMHO.

Polypropylene is quite stuff and a bit wild, you need to boil it to style it. I find the same is true with Kanekalon too.

I second everything PKW said. :)  I find that Dollyhair still has the highest quality nylon within the US.  Good luck!

Yep I'm still really happy with DH hair, it does look oily while you're installing it. But after its styled I never notice that. :) I really love playing with/running my fingers through DH haired customs xD so for that reason alone  It can look oily over time, but washing it is easy. :p

I prefer nylon. Saran is much too brittle. I haven't personally found the DH nylon I use to be oily.

I would also use Nylon, I prefer its feel over any other hair type. :)

Thanks so much for all the feedback!

I am now leaning towards the Dollyhair nylon then.  (The color selection alone is much better!)
