Title: Polymer clay and hair?
Post by: Taxel on November 17, 2016, 03:17:41 AM
I want to make a doll for my friend with Perfume Puff/Troll sort of hair but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. I'm planning to make holes before baking and just gently shoving the hair in after. There's a tutorial somewhere for making Perfume Puff hair with yarn but I'm not sure if it would work with the clay. Has anyone else tried it before?

She'd really love actual hair so fingers crossed I don't chicken out and just sculpt it haha.

In that case I would puff the hair first and then shove it into the holes with a bit of glue.

Well what kind of doll is it? A BDJ? Or just a solid non-posable doll?
If you are confident enough, you could possible make a wig?

You could buy hair in tracts (tracks?) and make sure you leave an indent for where it's supposed to go after the clay is done baking.

Uninu - Can you puff it first? That could definitely work!

sd_dreamcrystal - Jointed but not BJD level, like this pony. A wig is probably beyond me, at least at the quality I'd want for a gift, but I might be able to find one on Etsy or something. I'll take a look around!

archidraca - Oh that's another good idea! That might be an easier way to handle the troll type hair too. I have no idea how many plug holes I'd need but tracts/tracks would be easier to account for. I'll have to see if I can find any in the right color, or maybe find a tutorial to make them that'll work with the clay.

Thanks guys! :D Lots of options to try now.

My suggestion for Perfume Puff hair would be to use wool roving instead of yarn. It's already puffed so you can take tufts and glue them straight into plug holes or tracks you've made in the clay, that way you don't have to worry about loss from brushing yarn out.

I have a custom I made years ago using this method, I'll see if I can find a picture...

Edit: please excuse the fact that it's an alien elephant thing with a tentacle mane. I made clay tentacles and hollowed the end she out a little then glued tufts of roving in. You could experiment like this?

Oh I soo like that elephant thing Tulips is it made from a pony or did you manage to replicate G1 shape so well?

As to the hair I'd just put it in before baking and use the fire extinguisher, haha.
