Title: My first completed deflock (#SaveTheG1s)
Post by: RainbowQuartz on October 27, 2016, 11:28:22 AM
I started collecting again about a year ago and decided I wanted to do everything I can to restore G1s that have issues (from minor to major.) Since so softs tend to be a hot mess more often than not, learning to deflock and give a pony new life without altering who she is meant to be seemed like a cool thing to do.

I finished my first total deflock today!

My sister sent me this Magic Star that she found (I can't remember where.) She didn't have the time to deflock her and knew that I wanted to figure out how to do it.

I boiled a pot of water and added a scoop of oxyclean. In she went with my Shady (who needs more work so her after pics aren't going to be in this post.)

Surprisingly, the oxy bath was all she needed. All of the flocking and glue came off easily with the nail brush that I use to clean all of my ponies!

Magic Star is looking pretty cute, imo.  Her hair is still wet but I couldn't wait to take after shots.

How do you feel about deflocked ponies?

she looks great!! you did quite a nice job, and really freshened her up! :-)

i only have one so soft pony, posey! even though im not a huge fan of them, her flocking is in very good condition, she she gets to stay fuzzy ;-)

if i get my hands on any with poor flocking, i'll probably try to deflock them like you!

She looks great, even better deflocked I think :) Never knew it was so easy to do. Now I'm tempted to deflock some of my bad thrift flocked ponies XD

She looks incredible; great job!  I have always wanted to try and deflock.  How long did you boil them in the oxybath?
Title: Re: My first completed deflock (#SaveTheG1s)

Thanks, everyone!

I boiled the water and added a scoop of oxy once it boiled, then put the ponies in (heads off) and shut off the burner. I left them in until the water cooled down.

I think this is an atypical case. Usually the oxy bath alone won't clear all of the flocking. My Shady still has a lot of glue and some flocking residue on her symbols and needed a lot of acetone and scrubbing on the rest of her body after this. I'm going to have to use other methods to remove the glue and residue from her symbols.

I'm hoping to save a messed up version of every so soft via deflocking and have a nice flocked version as well for my collection. :D

She is really cute, amazing that she needed only an oxy clean bath. Normally my deflocked ones need to scrub hard, and some of them even harder.
You did a great job.

Your Magic Star looks beautiful!  It kind of looks like you were making pony stew for dinner.  I think some of the SS ponies look better as a deflock, like Twist or Taffy maybe.    I have 10 So Softs but they all have nice flocking.  However, if I got one whose flocking was patchy I would definitely try to deflock her.  A few years ago I got some So Softs that had been in a dirty garage for years and I sent them to a woman here who did a fantastic job cleaning their bodies and flocking while keeping the flocking intact.

Wow she looks great. I guess it all depends on the condition of the glue. I love de-flocks :)

Thanks, everyone! I definitely would never deflock a pony that had good flocking. As you can see in her before pictures, Magic Star was beyond saving flocking-wise. My Shady was the same way. I have a few flocked ponies that have beautiful flocking and they will remain so softs.

Be careful in the future with boiling chartreuse haired ponies like Shady - they can and often do bleed colour when exposed to heat/oxyclean.  Since Magic Star is yellow already it probably won't show, but better safe than sorry.

Magic Star's rather well known to be the easiest pony to deflock - seems like the glue they used on her (or maybe something in her plastic formula) makes it particularly easy to remove.  Shady on the other hand... I wish you luck!

I like deflocks of ponies Hasbro didn't make in the regular form. Last year I picked up two abused SS ponies from ponycon, Twilight and Hippety Hop, and thanks to the hard work of Artie here, they are now stunning deflocks. She also finished off a Best Wishes who was really bald and she looks amazing too. The only other proper deflock I have is Ribbon, and to me she's the proper Ribbon that ought to have been released in the UK but for some reason wasn't (even though she is in backcard stories). She matches baby Ribbon perfectly that way.

I am more iffy about deflocking ponies that have almost identical regular counterparts (Truly and Cupcake especially) because of the risk of confusion. But there are a lot of SS ponies for which those counterparts don't exist, or exist in a different form, and with them? If they're beat up and worn, deflocking seems a smart thing to do.

Ooooh, she's so pretty without her flocking!  ^.^
Magic Star was my first SS pony from childhood...[I'm pretty sure she was my second childhood pony ever, she had to have been.. if not second then third! hah]

Can't wait to see more of your deflocks! :D

She looks beautiful! I'm also hoping to have a flocked and deflocked version of each of them. I'm on my 3rd. Paradise was really easy to deflock, it came off in an oxy bath just like your Magic Star. Wind Whistler and North Star I'm still working on, their flocking is being super stubborn. I normally wouldn't deflock North Star since I already have her UK counterpart but I found her at the thrift store and her flocking was in bad shape.

I agree that they should have made the deflocked ponies they did with flocking. The first one I got was Ribbon since she wasn't deflocked. And I had in mind to keep her like that since I though it would be difficult to deflock her. Then I tried and from then on I looove deflocking them, but I only buy ponies which deflocked version doesn't exist... as for Cupcake I wish one day I will find the nss version. So my last deflock would be Twilight...

I love how the deflocking makes them look brand new. But I also feel a bit double about it. If the flocking isn't too badly damaged, I would never deflock a SS Pony. Mainly because that is not the way they were meant to be.

I feel the same about custom G1's. Ok...it's great and all. But if more andmore people will keep doing it. Then there will be no original G1's left. Unless the G1 is in such a poor or bad condition. I have no problems with it.

This is why I only customize ponies that would not stand well because they were to poor. For me is like giving them a second chance to shine.

Custom G1s make me sad. I know it's a personal preference, and I'd never attack a customizer for customizing one, but the numbers are dwindling and I just feel like the g1s out there now should remain the ponies they were meant to be.

If I could find flocking that looked like original flocking I'd totally re-flock ponies. I completely agree that they should not be deflocked unless their flocking is absolutely destroyed.

Post Merge: October 29, 2016, 04:09:16 PM

Another reason I love the new G1 molded fakies like Genie. People can customize on a G1 style canvas without sacrificing any actual G1s.

I loooooove so-soft ponies however, it is SO HARD to them in decent condition... I'd rather have a deflocked pony who is so cute than a pony with crappy flocking, you know. I'm lucky enough to have purchased a good quality magic star years ago, but for collectors who can only find her with flocking in rather sad condition, de-flocking is a way to give the pony a ne life. Your magic star looks adorable!!!

Glad I am not the only one who feels a bit sad about customizing G1's.

I just hope it is not done too much. Same goes for rehairs...and I mean rehair that makes the pony look completely different then what she should look like. I really don't like it. People who rehaur Ponies to look completly different and then try to sell them...To me it is just weird to see a pony like for example Big Brother Steamer with neon green hair, twice the lenght that it should be with weird curls. It is just not appealing to many people. Just leave the poor Pony be!!!!!

I have nothing against a professional looking rehair that actually uses the same hair as the original. In order to restore her natural looks.

Not trying to restrict people from being creative. I just don't like to mess with the originality of Ponies. Hence I am a picky collector. Especially when it comes to flocking or hair.

I agree with the customizing! It makes me really sad to see ponies that can be saved turned into something else.

I felt really guilty deflocking my Magic Star but she was pretty smoozed and it was necessary. I want to try giving her new flock if I can since I want to restore her to her former glory.

The Magic Star looks great! Good job!

I got a lot of So-softs recently, a Shady and North Star in very poor condition. Shady is almost done, and North Star is coming along. I already had duplicates of these ponies so I went for it. poor North Star was filthy - and her flocking was coming off.

I'm in this boat too w Pierlala.... I just ordered a big order from DollyHair to fix some ponies I got -- a flat foot Blossom w no tail and a bad haircut, several baby ponies with no tails or cut trails... their bodies are completely fine, but the hair is gone to the point I can't live with it. I guess my passion is restoring.

But, I do have some true bait ponies in my stash right now. A horribly pin-dotted newborn twin with giant chunks of its face missing, a Cloud Puff with a bad haircut and awful regrind........still on the fence as to what to do with these. But I guess I'll decide once I finish up the first round of restorations.

I have personally vowed never to customize a G1 pony, as I love the challenge that restoration poses and agree that they are a dwindling resource... I actually need to deflock my only SS pony though, Taffy's flocking is horribly rubbed, yellowed and she has a strange mark (maybe a cigarette burn?) on one side that I can't get round to tryin to remove until her flocking is out of the way... Anyone know how easy she is to deflock?, I could really use some pointers  ^.^

I always think flocked ponies were made with two lives (like cats have 6? xD) just cause once their flocking gets all gnarly, you can strip it off of them and they look like a brand spanking new pony right out of the box!

Exactly! I feel the same, they have a new chance, as for bait ponies that can become another one after customization or restoration.

I've seen some amazing restorations people have done with sculpting missing chunks! That's always an option, certainly, even if you have to send the pony to someone else for the actual scuplting/painting parts haha.

We should try it sometime when you're visiting. Even if the flocking isn't exact, it'd be worth a try to get them close to their original states. You know how I feel about restoration. lol

Magic Star looks great!  I would only ever deflock (and have deflocked) ponies that desperately need it.  Otherwise, the flocking stays on!  I've deflocked my childhood Best Wishes, for example, because there was no saving her otherwise (her flocking looked TERRIBLE, it was stained and had bald patches)  Now she looks a whole new pony!  I got a minty flocked one to go with her :lovey:

I think it just depends on how much the glue has aged, although my Magic Star was easy too  :)

I'm having terrible trouble with Loftys.  I've had one Hippety Hop that was easy and one that was really awful!

I know I do mine. I haven't had one yet that the flocking was good enough to keep. Most the flocking was half rubbed off anyway. I also agree it varies so much. I had s few it came right off and then others it had to attack it. I love customs and doing rehairs. Most of my herd are rehairs. I know it's not for everyone but also don't care since they are mine.

I have only ever bought flocked ponies that I thought were de-flocking candidates. I don't really like flocked ponies enough to collect them since I'm short of space and only collect certain sets. I bought a lot of good candidates, mostly with eye or symbol rubs or hair cuts as well. The first Lofty I bought wasn't bad enough sadly so I sold her on. The other two I bought have significant flocking loss but I dont know how because the remaining flocking is stuck like concrete. I think they might have been boiled but im not sure. Luckily I have a Ribbon waiting and her flocking is just falling off. Otherwise she is perfect :)

Yeah it's not always the best to deflock a pony that is perfectly fine, it decreases the value

I agree, I think it's best to leave them in the original condition unless they look really awful. With just a bit of loss they can still look quite sweet :)

There's plenty of poor-to-terrible flocking So-Softs to go around.  I rather doubt anyone's sitting in their bathroom/kitchen boiling the fluff off of otherwise minty ponies, given the fact you can very easily sell a nice one and get enough to buy a basketful of poor condition deflock candidates.
