Title: Can You Whistle?
Post by: tulagirl on October 19, 2016, 08:40:00 AM
I have been trying teach my R2 to whistle.  He can't learn it.  He says he has never been able to whistle. I can't figure out why.  So I was wondering how many of you can whistle, or do special whistles or can't whistle at all?  I wonder how common it might be.  Is it hard to learn?  Why can my R2 not whistle?  I never could learn how to do those louder whistles.

Really? What part of it is difficult for you to grasp? I am trying to figure out what I am missing to teach R2.  He wants to whistle. LOL

LOL this was me when I was young.  It was like roller skating and walking in my skates until Grandmother was like, "you are not skating."

I can whistle out a quiet little tune and sound fairly melodic at it. However, I'd love to be able to do one of those heard-from-across-the-street kind of loud whistles.

no! I come from a family of whistlers but I never could. I can do one tone by pressing my tongue to the roof of my mouth. I could never whistle an entire song

I'm not a skilled whistler by any means, I can do a few different notes but can't reach any high ones when whistling a song. I only can do  basic whistle as well, no idea how people manage with their fingers, teeth, or even grass.  >_<

I understand R2 though. I can't blow a gum bubble to save my life and it's more than a little irritating that I can't comprehend how to.

I can whistle with my lips and control the notes.  However, it is a relatively low octave for whistles.

I can whistle a little bit. Half of the time I try it doesn't come out, though. lol

I can to a musical whistle with my lips, but I've never been able to do a loud whistle with my teeth/fingers. I'd love to be able to do that.

I can sometimes like...make a whistle-like sound? But I can't manage it consistently, and I definitely can't make a tune lol. My dad is really good at all of that kind of thing, but I've never been able to figure it out.

Me too! However I didn't learn until I was twelve or so. We had this song we were singing at school and there was a part where you were supposed to whistle. I was so embarrassed because I couldn't do it and I thought all my classmates could. I faked it then but after that I was determined to learn, so I kept rounding my lips and practicing until I figured it out. Learning tunes takes even more time but it took me a good while until I was able to make any kind of a whistling sound at all!

I can't whistle, I have tried all my life.  I never could get the right lip or tongue formation.  I think it is hard to teach someone how to do it if it comes naturally.

I can whistle quite complex melodies but I cannot do the loud one.

That's how I am.  I whistle actual songs, but I can't make it very loud.

Boy I am amazed at all of you that can't whistle like my R2.  It is amazing but now I am wondering if perhaps the way our mouth is shaped has something to do with being able to do this task  or not.  Kind of like the genetic ability to curl the sides of your tongue.

I can only whistle by taking a deep breath and pulling air in instead of blowing it out. That being said I can't really do it on demand .

I can whistle, but I think with my lips, not teeth. I'm able to do simple melodies. Can't do the finger thing though.

This is me also, haha.  I can sort of make high pitched noises but they aren't true whistles.

I can whistle a simple tune without sounding too horrible, but anything more complex is beyond me. My mum whistles beautifully, even complicated melodies.

I can whistle half decently. My Gremma had to put a lot of effort into teaching me though. Which really just consisted of her whistling at me and me trying to copy for however long it took.

I haven't done it in awhile though. Now when I try it's definitely gotten harder. I prefer to hum though so *shrugs*

Yea I can make a whistle sound by pushing air through my teeth.  In fact that is the way I get Vinny's attention when I am wanting him.  He responds to that noise for some reason but ignores a regular whistle. My parakeets like it when I whistle or make a whistle sound with my teeth.  They will stop everything and turn their heads like they are trying to make out what I am saying. It is super funny.

I guess I can whistle in a way, but I don't really count it as such so I'm going to say no. What I can do is blow air out the gap between my two front teeth, it's a weak little thing that I usually waver to sound like summer insects. :P

I never could figure out how to move my lips to whistle, and sticking fingers in my mouth didn't help at all either lol.

Yup, I whistle but only the basic way. Never bothered learning it any other way but whistling came in handy when I had a dog and had a special whistle when calling him, which he actually reacted to. I'm no good at whistling any famous tunes and I've learned to live with it. ^.^

I've never been able to whistle in any way. A few people have tried to teach me but I just don't get it.

No one in my family every really whistles? I can't think of hearing/seeing any of them do it. Maybe that's a factor? I can wiggle my ears, like a lot of my family, but my boyfriend just cannot understand how or learn to do it.

Oh goodness I can't wiggle my ears either.  I remember practicing that as a kid and I could never get command over the muscles that move the ear. Ha

Cantercadance, your siggy has taken me over the moon. I love owls and that is fabulous. I have about 4 of the ones you have posted in that photo.  Whoo hooo

I can barely whistle and I can't do it loudly. And apparently the face when I do it is funny because it makes people laugh. XD

I can do a basic whistle. I used to be unable to do it. I think it was a nice bonus to do with my years of speech therapy. As a child, I had to be specifically taught how to say many different sounds like sh, th, l, r, etc. The fancy word for the problem I had is developmental verbal dyspraxia. Anyway, I think the therapy improved my tongue motor skills so that I was able to figure out how to whistle.

LeaveAWhisper you do those things but you also have to do something with your tongue to whistle.  I don't know how to explain it.  This is the problem I am having teaching R2. I have no way to show R2 what I am doing with my tongue and I lack the words to describe it.

I remember my dad teaching me to whistle the first few notes of "I am Ironman..." XD I don't even think I've even heard that song.... but I really liked it, and I had determination to mimic him.

What about watching how-tos on youtube or something? Maybe someone else has a learning trick that might help out?

I suspect whistling well might have something to do with being able to curl your tongue - at least when I whistle, I sort of ... cup and arch my tongue at the front of my mouth behind my lips.  Pulling it back deepens the note, blowing faster and with a smaller aperture/tongue forward gets higher notes.  I can regular whistle melodies, mimic birds, inhale-whistle, side-whistle (lips only, no tongue), and finger whistle (the really loud one but I need to practice it more.)  Actually remember learning how to whistle - I was downstairs in the basement, on a swing, just experimenting / playing around.

I can whistle melodically and finally learned the finger whistle. I can also whistle and hum at the same time which sounds like some sort of alien spacecraft. All I know is that the tip of my tongue  touches my bottom teeth.

My grandmother could whistle perfect melodies. It was pretty amazing. I, on the other hand, can barely whistle a single note. I want to learn how to do the type of loud whistle where you use your fingers, but I can't figure it out.

My step father is like this.  He has an amazing whistle so much so the bird has picked it up. LOL
