Title: NaNoWriMo! Chat Thread!
Post by: Dragonflitter on October 14, 2016, 09:13:29 AM
It's that time again, my writer friends! :D November is almost upon us!

Have you gone to the NaNo site and set up your novel yet? :D
http://nanowrimo.org

My NaNoWriMo buddy list is like 4 pages long, but most of my friends have dropped it over the years. :( I need more buddies to keep me motivated! If you would like to be added to my Buddy List, please post your NaNo username here! And you can add me too. My NaNo username is ryuukokoro

Let's make this a giant chat thread, NaNoWriMoers! What's the first topic of conversation? Why, tell us a little synopsis about the novel you're writing this year, of course!

Woot! Woot! Really want to participate but as I'm currently swamped with school, I'm not sure it's an option.  Also I'm terrible at novels, perhaps I will do a short story sort of thing, or even a Novella.  Anyways, good luck to all of you who do it!!! Writers Rock!

I always suck at this every year, but this year I am determined to work it until the end. I found out that my town has a nanowrimo meetup scheduled, so I really want to attend that, in hopes that having actual real life people to keep me in check will be the motivation I need to make it work this time.

My novella will be called Necrophobia, a steampunk setting horror/thriller with a lot of mysteries, ciphers and character exposition.

I completed it last year with my FIM fic and am attempting it this year. It should be easier as I'm doing a joint novel with my BFF and therefore am only doing 25,000 words...however, my BFF just went back to uni for her PHD and I'm not sure she'll manage the pressure.

But I get to write about mermaids for 30 days straight. At least it'll start us off. :)

Every year I want to do this and every year I get too busy.  I sort of wish it came during a different month.  Anyone know why they picked November?  :)

Hoping I'll have the time this year to complete it.

@theamazingfetus - Your novel sounds awesome! I love stories with ciphers in them. :D

@Storybelle - There's some really awesome mermaid stories out there right now! Good luck on yours!

@scarletjul - According to the NaNo website History page, originally the event was held in July but they moved it to November on the second year to take advantage of horrible weather that keeps you cooped up indoors lol.

I might give it a shot this year, but not in a traditional way. I gave it a shot the usual way back in 2008 but I failed kind of miserably. Since then its been pretty much constant writer's block that I only just started to break free of this year. I might go for a 50k word month of nothing in particular to help keep me on track. I don't want to "relapse" to never writing but my usual subjects are over until April/May so this might be helpful.

Ah, that would explain it.  I live in CA, so our weather never gets quite that bad.  :)
With school and holidays, I usually end up pretty busy in November.

I honestly love hearing about everything NaNoWriMo though I could never do it. My goal for November is to get my (sluggishly crafted) manuscript over 100k.

Arg, Every year I say I will buckle down and participate, every year I walk away with a glorious total of 0 words. I do want to draft a story though, so this is a great excuse to start.

Can there be an arena support group?

That's kinda why I started this thread! lol. We can do support for each other to encourage through our writing blocks, chat/brainstorm to get creative juices flowing, maybe even do some group events like word wars! :D

I have a couple of pony ideas for this month that I've had rattling around for a while.  One is Wind Whistler, Fizzy, Shady, and Gusty go on an adventure immediately following the events of "Mish Mash Melee" and the other is Megan becomes the apprentice of the Weather Witch.  Though, I don't know if they're only 50k word stories.

Ah yes! Sounds fun. Count me in...I just need to make sure I don't get lazy on day 1.  Soooo, some of you already shared, but what is everyone's general ideas?

I'm doing that whole "take a photo every day for a year" thing and I'm thinking about writing based on my daily photos. Still unsure if I want to try and keep a consistent theme/characters/anything or just have each day be a solo thing.

After doing the math 20-25k would probably be my goal if I go for it. 50k is just too much with everything else on my plate right now but I'd like to do *something*.

I'm going to be writing a children's novel about a baby orca who helps a team of humans rescue other sea creatures in trouble. XD I love writing kids books. I'm so excited to get started, it's hard to hold back and wait til Nov 1st!

I was thinking we could have a 'midnight party' here in this thread on Oct 31. I know midnight is different for different people on this forum, but I thought we could chat and post about stuff while we wait for midnight, and then when midnight hits we can start writing until we crash from our sugar buzz! XD :D

This sounds sooo much fun, Al! Mish Mash Melee is my favorite episode of the old show. And don't worry if your story is longer than 50k. You don't have to stop right at the end of November, you can keep writing afterward for as long as it take you to finish your story. :)

Taxel - 25k is a good goal, as well! Especially for a photo journal. I am pretty sure you can go into your settings on the NaNo website and alter the goal so that your little word count ticker reflects a 25k goal instead of a 50k one. :)

I did this two years ago and LOVED it!  Last year I was going to go for it again, but my laptop died on me in late October and spent well over a month at the factory for repairs  :pout: so I couldn't do it since I only had a borrowed computer available sporadically.  I may try this year, but honestly I have sooo much reading this semester and my Japanese class has gotten harder and requires more work than last year, so I'm not sure if I can pull it off.  I'm considering taking a crack at it and seeing how it goes, but I'm a bit on the fence over it, especially since I don't have an idea I'm particularly fired up over right now.  I may go with what I wanted to do last year, but I've kind of lost interest in that idea for now.  I also know that once I start I'll have a hard time backing off even if it ends up being too much for me this year.  Hmmmmm

I'm participating this year! It will be the first time I'm actually working on my own story and characters rather than a fanfic. I'm already about halfway with the first draft (I've had to keep stopping constantly, because one of my characters can't make up her mind on what exactly she wants out of her story arc and her back story / personality keeps switching around, whilst everyone else has settled perfectly).

I'll probably participate this year.  I've got several story starts that need fleshing out.  It just depends on whether or not my muse lets me work on them.  Stupid writer's block...

Count me in! i'm ladybastilla over there as well. :) Here's my blurb:

Once bitten, twice shy.

Roselba Torez seems to have it all: brains, beauty and suitors begging for her hand. Yet she dreams of adventures beyond the castle walls. Of journeys with her father that came to an abrupt end after her disastrous first meeting with her Intended.

Five years ago Naga Prince Lorcan Alcardo was placed under a powerful curse. By day he is a man; by night a snake. He is trapped between worlds, unable to reclaim his natural form.

When Roselba flees the castle and is saved from slave traders by Lorcan, the two begin a perilous journey to regain Lorcan's true form. Some girls have to kiss a few frogs to find their prince. Roselba needs to kiss a snake--if she can forgive him for biting her the first time they met.

***

Very excited to get going on this. It's a WIP, but I haven't touched it in a couple years and it's been bugging me to get back to it. Hopefully I can reach 'the end' by the end of November. :)

Sadly, no...but only because I have to be to work at 8am.  However the library I work at is hosting write-ins every Wednesday so I'll get to do those as soon as I get off work.  :)

Looking forward to going to a writein tomorrow. my local group of writers is so nice and I was sooo nervous at the first metting and kick off but I had a lot of fun so I'm going into this whole thing with a lot of excitement

I think I have my basic synopsis ready.  I'm going with the direct sequel of Mish Mash Melee.  It's also a sequel to Through the Door as a legend wants out permanently and believes there is a way to do it.

I'm up to 35 words so far!

Ugh...I work at a library and since we have a room reserved for Nanowrimo on Wednesdays the local paper wants to do a story on it.  One of the librarians told them I was participating so they interviewed me (which I didn't want to do) and now they want to take my picture tomorrow. :wail:  I write so I don't have to talk to people or have my picture taken.  That librarian is on the doo-doo list.

I think I got a little too ambitious with mine.  It's proving to be a much more complicated story than one you can shove a few thousand words a day through.

And I'm Al-1701 on there as well.

I got with a couple friends and we are trying to write at least 1k words a day. I've fallen behind a bit, but this sure is tons of fun!

I'm continuing a Fantasy novel I started on February ;) my outline is looking pretty solid thanks to the NaNoWriMo and I'm already at chapter four.

We're about 5k behind.  Anyone else falling behind too?

My best friend was in Iceland for the first five days and did no writing so now we're trying to get our word count up. We have a legit excuse! Sort of...

I'm behind.  But when I get in a writing vein I can get about 5,000 words in a couple of hours so I'm trying not to force myself just yet because that's when my writer's block digs in hard.

Just went through and added everyone who posted their username here! :D

I've fallen very much behind, for a few rl issues. :\ But I'm working on climbing back! I did 8k this weekend and I'm hoping to keep it up for the rest of NaNo at this pace so I can finish at the deadline.

Also figured out how to add a NaNo widget to the Arena sig. -pokes sig-

Well, my bestie and I decided we're gonna push through and try to finish. I am taking on more of her words though. We were splitting 25k evenly but with her RA work, her actual job and her PHD work she's finding it hard. It's more 30/20 atm and may even end up 35/15. She might push it out though, when she sits and write she can do a couple of k at once.

Good luck everyone! Final stretch now!  :cheer:

I'm not quite to 25K yet.  But it's more than I had at the beginning of the month.  It would be nice to actually "win" this time, but unless I spend all weekend on it, I don't know that I'll be able to catch up and I'll admit that I really don't want to spend my days off writing (at least not all day.)

I have found that setting a timer for about 10 minutes and doing a word sprint helps me to get my word count up.  I can hit the daily total in about half an hour that way.

I've won before, but this month's isn't gonna happen. That's okay, though. I have about 25k written, and I'm also working on outlines for the other books in this series when my mind tries to wander. That'll prove very useful moving forward. My other series is on pause because it needs massive edits from not knowing how important that would be.

Well today is the last day! Good luck everyone meeting the deadlines you aim to meet! :) Even if you don't get to 50k, just taking on the challenge of the event is a winning choice to make. :) Any words you wrote during this month are more words than you had when you started the month, after all!

As you can see from my little widgit here, I have about 4k left to go today and have a full 8-hour work day too, so today is going to be a real slog. -_- I'm so tired from so much work these past few days.. But I'm so close I can taste it! I just have to try to focus!
