Title: How do you keep count of your herd?
Post by: dragonfly on August 11, 2016, 10:39:56 AM
I gave up keeping count long ago. Although I do keep a collection inventory in my head of who I have, who I've sold or traded, and who I want or need. I couldn't tell you an exact number, though.

I don't keep a running count of any of my collections. The numbers are daunting even if its just something tiny, like say Petites, that fit all in a single small box or whatever. Its way less stressful without keeping track of numbers!

I have a Shutterfly site where I keep track of my collections though, more or less. I take photos as I get new items. For dolls and action figures, I have lists of each brand and when I got them. For ponies, I just upload the photos into yearly albums. The photos are captioned with info like the pony's name, how I acquired them, and when they arrived. I might need to find a new way to organize since we're getting to the point of a year album with 2 photos in it.

With the dolls I just add a note to the lists when I get rid of something but for the ponies I basically did nothing about it ever. I think I'm going to photograph all my ponies on white and make new albums for my current collection, sorted by generation. That way I can keep the visual history of the old albums that I enjoy and still have an actually helpful area that shows all the ponies in my collection. But that's sooo cluttered... it might be time to just ax the old albums. I may enjoy them from a nostalgia and time capsule sort of view but they're honestly terrible! The photos are almost entirely horrid, haha.

Easy. I don't

Okay- well for the things that are important, I TRY to take photos of them. But honestly most things just get packed in crates and I often forget what I have...

I have a spreadsheet, with tabs for each year, and ponies arranged by set. I keep count of duplicates and any flaws or restoration work, prices when I remember them. It also includes my Keypers and the Lil' Litters.

Once I have a better storage system for the ponies, I'll be adding photos for each pony showing front, both sides, portrait, rear, top and bottom.

I don't keep track of accessories or playsets... yet. That'll be the next big spreadsheet project.

I keep track - but I have only 32 ponies, so it's not that difficult ;) I would have been almost embarrassed if I didn't know them!

I have an idea of which common US released G1 I have because I mark them off in my book put out by Summer Hayes.  The number of duplicates  :lmao:  European/UK and nirvana ponies, I would recall which ones I had if shown a picture.  I am in the very beginning stages of finally putting my collection together so maybe in a year or two, I could give you a good estimate.

I have a My Little Pony notebook that my friend bought me that I write my collection in. From the front is a list of the ponies I have, with the accessories I have for them. Here I have also included any modifications that have been made to these ponies, such as repainted eyes, partial rehair etc. At the back is a list of ponies I still want to get, on another page is a list of accessories I still want to get, and another page with a list of modifications I would still like to get done, such as my Windy needs his eyes repainting etc. I'm a bit OCD I think!!

I don't know my count off the top of my head but close enough.

I have a spreadsheet with every single pony/character listed along with a ton of other information. I'm working on a database to make it a bit easier for me to manage. Then I will also move onto an accessory database. It's a huge project that I'm pretty excited about.

I have a google doc where I keep a list and running count of all my ponies.
I think it started out as a wish list then I started moving ponies to a separate "have" list at one point and at sometime later counted them all and started keeping a tally.
There are 75 ponies in my collection right now (including Spike) not counting any I'm selling/considering selling. The most I've had is somewhere just over 300.

Having just done a quick check of my spreadsheet, I have a grand total of 492 ponies and 13 Keypers. Accounted for, anyway. I'm still certain there are more hiding in some of my playset/accessory boxes.

I love spreadsheets  :)
I do keep, count (or did) except for customs, and petites. I had close 886 ponies in my G1 collection, I believe I am down to 326ish left for sale now

I keep track of trades, purchases, etc. on a note in my Laptop/Phone.

It holds basic information;
Who I purchased/traded with, the pony, the price I paid, and how much said pony is worth.

I don't have a running number of exact amount ponies, but it's up in the higher numbers.

I gave up (especially for the G3s... there are sooooo many...!).  I'm too disorganised by nature.  No clue how many... though I'm usually good at figuring out who I don't have.  Maybe cause it's a shorter list?  Idk.

I did just take photos of most of my herd at the beginning of the summer... I found that helps somewhat?  But I'd be lost without My Little Wiki and Strawberry Reef. :yikes:

Another spreadsheet person over here! I have a checklist of sorts on my inventory blog, where I list the ponies I want, then cross them off as I get them - once a set has been completed, I remove that set from the list completely.

As for what I currently already own, I keep an Excel spreadsheet (which I've linked from Google docs into my blog as well, lol). I have one tab that is just numbers at a glance for actual MLP, then a tab for actual MLP. I also have tabs for non-MLP, but the only non-MLP collection I'm currently invested in is the Monster High vinyls; anything else I could kind of take it or leave it for now, and the tally is more just an FYI for myself.

I've never counted my collection but I did do inventory a month ago or so. Mostly because I have been actively collecting and didn't want to accidentally buy doubles. So I have a list organized by year and then set and I check off ponies as I go.

I love spreadsheets so I have an extensive G3-4 with equestria girls one. I just added some from a big parcel today so I know I've just passed the 1200 mark on that collection. I also have a separate count for G3, G3.5, G4 ponies and equestria girls in a separate column. I'd have to look up my other generations as I have a terrible memory, hence the spreadsheets.
My accessories are all recorded with the ponies in G2-4 but G1 go in to my copy of my accessory file (see link below). I'd love to do it for all gens one day but it's just too big a project.

I have a spreadsheet - tracks ponies, playsets / accessories, merch, customs, and what I've labelled as "others" - pony-like but not the traditions, things like ponyville, blind bags, mcds. It counts everything (by gen and total), along $ paid and $ value. I usually have a rough number of my collection in my head, but I can't ever remember the precise number, plus it changes.

I don't have a running tally but I have a pretty good idea of who I have (at least with G1 and G4 since I don't really collect G4 normally) Most of my G1s though are from my childhood collection so they have a rich history and the ones that aren't are once that I daydreamed about having when I was a kid. G2s I'm bad at counting and keeping track of and G3s I have no idea and usually have to ask Hannah if I have a specific pony or not. Most of those were also thrift finds and occurred at times when we'd 'strike pony gold' and bring a bunch home at 50 cents a piece.

A count, no I don't have an accurate one. I always just say at least 1000 ponies if someone asks how many I have.

I keep a binder with everything in it, checklists for ponies and accessories/merch, plush etc. So that has also has some detailed ledgers of what I own, where they came from the accessories I own, condition, any work done to them, or work I have done (like cleaning, what I used. especially any repairs.) so if one is upgraded and sold I can pass along important info. so I would have to go through and count them all in the binder to know exactly what I have. I also have a spreadsheet and the base US set loaded into that and some UK's.  I don't think I have a counter added to that either.

I mark mine off in the collector's guide and make notes in the margins about where I got them from and any repairs I had to make.  I don't know how many I have. I just know that it's never enough.

Way back when, I had a list, but the last few years I've added a lot to it and now have no idea!  A lot of them are spares- getting unwanted ponies from my sisters' collections blew any lists out of the water as I'm still slowly cleaning them!  i'm pretty clear on what I don't have/want to find, though once or twice I've had to check :)

I hope to get to the point where I've sold off most duplicates, but I probably won't have a list, at least not for US releases.  As for counting them... hehe I sort of don't want to know!

I used to take a photo of everyone and name it, and then put it in respective folders on my computer. But I haven't done so in about a year, and keeping up with all these G4 doubles of the same pony isn't helping. I think I have about 600 something, G1, G3 and G4. And 2 G2 babies.

Years ago, I printed out a very useful list of ponies and accessories that I'd found online. I kept it updated for a long time, even writing down whether the ponies were part of my childhood collection, car boot sale finds etc. I also wrote down when I'd bought them and did the same for all duplicates. It was a very good system, but it broke down when I emigrated to the UK and left nearly my whole collection in storage. These days, I've still got the list, so I could tell you about most ponies I've got in storage, and I have an idea of who I've got here in the UK, but I couldn't tell you more than that.

Okay so since this topic started I made a spread sheet of my g1s (about 50) and bought the G1 collector's book to help me keep track of everyone's  assessories. I don't feel the need to keep track of my G3 since I only buy those when I find ones with interesting symbols and my G3.5 and g4s are only of unique characters keeping them down to a small number.

I used to keep track... it's a bit hard now. I mostly keep a meticulous count of my G1s, using the Collector's Inventory to keep track of ponies, petites, stickers, accessories. I'm probably going on around 400 G1s now? About 20 G2s, maybe a couple hundred G3s, no clue on G4s.

I take pics of every single pony that comes to join the herd
I do end up upgrading and selling them sometimes ,so is hard to keep up
but last time I counted I was going at 1100 , counting every single pony  of every size, type .
so I would say I have double of that , and some G2 armies keep growing so.......yep
also I add most of the g4s double, 1 to keep mib and 1 loose of most of the releases
so I have added a lot since the last count . but who is counting ????
not me for sure :)

Ahaha, keep track?  I try to keep track of my Blue Belles, I at least count them once in a while when I clean them, but I have a hard time even with them, let alone my 'for sale' ones!  There are *tons* of mostly bait ponies in my shed, so many that I may actually set up a booth at the flea market to try to sell them, because they really aren't worth the work to clean up.

I used to keep track of every pony I got, how much I paid, where I got it, and any special circumstances- like if I was at a garage sale and asked a question that led to ponies, or if the seller was rude on ebay.
I appear to have cleverly hidden this notebook from myself, though. Brilliant.

I don't really like numbers. Plus there are two collections here, mine and sister's, and they intersect, some ponies we both have, some each, some shared. And many doubles, upgrades, variations, etc. I know what I have and what I don;t, but not the number. At least I know who I have with G1...I haven't actually seen my G2 ponies for a while...

I used to keep track, especially back in 2009 when I started collecting. But since I collect 3-4 months every year and then take these long hiatuses, I've lost track long ago! Also, since I've sold off some and gotten news ones in the process, it's getting harder to keep track. Last time I counted, I had about 250 ponies but that was a few years ago. Not that it matters what amount I have now, since I'm not entirely done collecting yet, but will probably do a head count soonish...

I lost count a few years ago. I know how many I have left to go on my wish list...

I keep a Word document. When I redo my office this year/ next year I will reorganize and display everyone and maybe sell some duplicates.

I printed off pages of the toys on mlpmerch's website and put a huge checkmark on the ones I have! That way I dont have to dig out and count out my collection- I have it all on paper! Resources like that are a godsend! I think I have just over 1000 'pony' items total- most of them blingbags mind that...

I wish I had kept better track, but I save every variant too..... even the slightest fade differences in CC- can you imagine how many CC & Adult Blossoms I have? I don't even like the CP ponies, but I love baby ponies, so I NEEED their mommies too!

I've been collecting less than a year and at some point I tried to count them but I couldn't even get an accurate count within one box...I have them all standing up in very shallow boxes but they are all just in there and I think they must be sneaking around while I am trying to count them or something.   At the time I estimated I was a little under 100 G1s...possibly 50 or 75 g3s and g4s combined...now I have at least 150 g1s and at least 100 g4s and g3s and a handful of G2s too.

The only way I'm going to be able to count them is to take them out of their boxes and count them back in because like I said they are moving around in there I'm sure of it.

Ooooo this reminds me, is there a good website that we can post pictures of our collection based on categories (blind bag, Fashion style, playful pony and weird catagories like cosmetics, books, stickers, etc.) and the pictures are displayed as thumbails? Ive always wanted to take a picture of literally everything in my collection one-by-one and post it somewhere! I think it would be easy for me to keep track of my collection that way!

I wonder if its easy to create one like on LiveJournal or here on a brag thread?

I use the summer hayes G1 guide to keep track of who I have/don't have. I make notes in it of where/who  I got it from, doubles, varients.  I also have a note book with a list of G1 haves, G1 needs, G4 haves G4 needs. I don't keep track of my G3s and only have 5 G2s.
I have the blind bag collectors guide to keep track of the first waves of blind bags I have.

I want to get the Summer Hayes guides for G3 and G4.

I know that there are some boxes of ponies packed away somewhere I cant remember.

I have no idea of the total number.

Edit: went searching for some doubles for a possible trade and found some ponies that aren't in my inventory   >_< Now I`m going to have to re-do my entire inventory cause I hate buying something I already have  :pout:

My collection is still rather small, although I never remember how many ponies I've got. All I can remember is what I have and what I don't.

So, I went ahead and did an old-fashioned inventory of ALL my ponies yesterday which only took about 3 hours. Not only did I forget some of the ponies I do have, I talked myself into owning ponies I apparently haven't purchased yet.

I came to the realization about two weeks ago that I needed to do a proper inventory because I nearly bid home a Baby Heart Throb (NBBE), Baby Tic-Tac-Toe (First Tooth) and Baby North Star (First Tooth) when I had them already. Now I have three hand-written papers listing all my ponies; babies, adults, wing ponies and baby sea ponies. And therefore can keep track of which ponies I need and which I don't. ^.^

My herd is small enough that I know who I have and don't really bother to keep track. Though they are kind of scattered about so counting them is harder than it should be.

I use an app I bought called List Master. Best $7.99 I've ever spent on an app! I have a folder for MLP, sub-folders for each year, and then another row of sub-folders for the type (i.e., G1 -> Year 6 -> Big Brothers). The folders can also include accessories in them, as whatever is in a folder is what I put in there. So, in the big brothers folder mentioned above, I have:
o Chief
o red fire hat
o yellow bandana
o Wigwam
o yellow feathered headdress
o blue bandana
o Barnacle
o navy blue pirates hat
o gold bandana
I don't have their combs listed by each pony yet, but I can add the items in at the bottom of I want to, or if I decide to have the hats under a folder just for hats, I can remove the items from the list.

Granted, I also use the app to keep track of the games I own (as I'm prone to forgetting if I already have something), among other things (like games I want ;) ), so it was an even better buy for me.

ETA: Of course, the app only goes so far - I haven't had time to go through my collection lately, so I don't have everything as tracked as I would like.

Oh man, I remember the days where I would count them, but now I realize how much work it can be to keep track, so I haven't in a while!

I may do a recount one of these days, but I am trying to sell off some of my collection, so who knows! ^^;

I have so many (1,000 +) that I keep an inventory in the computer. This way I can also see what accessories I have for every pony, what I need, etc.

I have files for G1 Ponies, G1 Play Sets & Pony Wear, G1 Merchandise and G3 Ponies. Oh, and then there's the full inventory lists for everything I have for sale. Phew!

Weeell, I only have 32 ponies (+ one G3, so then let's say 33 ponies) so it is not that much to count really ;) I am sure that if I had more I wouldn't have the slightest clue. I need to remind myself of the number every so often with the ones I have, so if I would have had more I would have need to pick one of the other options (most likely, the one where I lost count a long time ago  )

My herd isn't that big at present so I do know who I've got and who I haven't got.

I printed off all 27 sheets of the Dream Valley checklist the other day whilst hubby was at work (Don't think he knows about that yet!) and have had fun marking off the ones I've got and looking at who I really want to try and get

I'm no good with spreadsheets so when the herd gets bigger I'd probably resort to the old fashioned pen and paper method and make myself a list!

I take pictures of them, i place them home following a specific order in my head (which some people may not understand) and I have a file on my ipad and phone with the names, gender, picture and powers if they are unicorns, divided in genders, race, type and age... I place them as "movie ponies", unicorn, pegasi, earth ponies, flutter ponies, baby ponies, sea ponies, windy wing ponies, male ponies and hybrids (customized). All have their names, pictures, and misc. stuff i need to remember...
I see i am not the only one getting freaky with it :-)

I used to be very neat about my collection, but after cohabiting with my fiancé and getting another cat, I had to prioritize other things. Still love to brush and note them down, but I have lost my track. My main collection are in tubs deep in the basement due to the tiny sized flat we share. Boo :(

I do have a list of the ponies I have, but I don't know the number off the top of my head.  But I'm lazy... I reached that point at around 25 lol.

I know that I have somewhere between 400 and 500.  I have my collection spread between three different houses (my apartment, my parents' house and our cabin) so I haven't been able to get an updated count for a few years.

I realised going through my want list that I hadn't updated it for ages which led me to look and my inventory book for an updated list. I also decided to do a count and I have exactly 250 ponies plus all Megans and Molly.

I'm pretty meticulous about keeping track of my collection. In case something happens to me I want my family to know who is who and who is worth what so they don't just give away my ponies for nothing. I NEED to get them insured. Is it bad I'm more concerned about my collection if my house catches fire? Furniture can be replaced. Ponies not so much.

I have counted them, and I have a checklist that helps me remember what ponies I still need for each set, and gives me notes on the ones I already have. Notes like: "pony has rubbed symbol UPGRADE" or "hair cut" or any sort of imperfection so I know I am looking for a better version of that pony. I also sell my extras on Ebay and I have kept at least one picture of each pony adopted. They photograph so beautifully... I just can't hit delete! Am I crazy? I keep telling myself that I'm going to do somethong with all these pictures. It looks like MLP Wikki could use some more love/pics/attention... Maybe I can post some there? Idk. I basically count only originals and not the dupes, unless they are a variation like FF Blossom, CF Blossom, and MO Blossom. I haven't inventoried accessoepries AT ALL. Drowning in ponies... But i love it!
