Title: what's the worst way you ruined a pony when you were a kid?
Post by: dragonfly on July 19, 2016, 02:31:59 PM
I'm going to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and assume it was accidental or with good intentions :D

probably the time I had SS buttons in the bathtub
I was a bathtub pee-er
She got pee on her
It never came out
I have since reformed my bathtub peeing ways
gross!

There is an episode of G1 where the ponies encounter Princess Porcina.  She has their hair cut for a magic cloak and it magically grew back.  It seemed reasonable at the time, but my old Applejack proves real ponies aren't as fortunate- she's missing 1/3 of her forelock.

Tried to use nail polish remover...on a symbol. I'm not sure what I thought would happen. thankfully I noticed right away so it's only a corner.

I guess mine isn't too bad compared to others, but I just cut my ponies tails to a real life horse length.   :lookround:

The worst I did was give Bow Tie a tail cut. It's tapered down the sides. My brother was worse. He was jealous of my Blossom so when I got Bow Tie he got Applejack and somehow managed to pull her tail out then he covered her with stickers. I still have her. She's really grotty. She's sticky where the stickers were and incredibly dirty where they weren't! I caught him playing one time - Applejack was the enemy of his thundercats :P

I was pretty good to my ponies, with one exception.  I got the Birthday Party Set for Christmas one year, and Yum Yum was my first ever flutter pony.  She was the star of that year's Christmas - for all of 5 minutes until her wings broke.  After that, Yum Yum and I had issues, and she was treated with a bit less care than the rest of my ponies.

I was in the backyard one day, playing with ponies(including Yum Yum) when I noticed the clothes line.  I had an idea, and made a discovery that day.  I discovered that flutter ponies are particularly well suited to being drawn like an arrow and launched into the air.  They're small and compact, so they fit well on, say, a clothes line. But their legs are also long for their size, so they're easy to grip so you can *really* pull them down and make them fly extra high.

However, they don't bounce well on concrete.  And clotheslines tend to leave rope burns on ponies.
Poor Yum Yum.

I umm just pierced their ears when I was little. I never did anything more damaging that I could remember. I do remember my Morning glory pony had her wings break off from me playing with her alot.

....Sometimes I would put in those velcro-sided hair accessories, the ones that Petal Blossom and Ivy's Parlor came with

I know it's probably the most mild example here, but I've always taken good care of my toys so the hair getting tangled was usually the worst thing that happened to them

I've had a pretty good giggle reading some of these

I think I was pretty kind to my ponies as a kid, though they may have subjected to the odd confusing game.... Shady often had to be the boy in the herd and my Luke Skywalker figurine was a baddie and didn't treat them very nicely once or twice. Good thing Han Solo was there to rescue them...

Physical damage came in the way of silly mistakes as an adult collector. One Mirror Mirror will never forgive me for washing off her perfectly good symbols I'm sure, and my Powder Puff charm still gives me the odd evil look for accidentally smearing the edge of a symbol with nail polish remover...

I was also pretty good with my toys. I did play with my sea ponies in the bathtub and several of them got moldy and had to be thrown out. In  fact my only surviving childhood sea pony is still around because my mom wouldn't let me put in the bathtub. I think I remember being sad when my flutter Yum Yum's wings broke although I was really careful when I was playing with her.

My grandma bought me Twinkler and she came with free pony lipstick. I used the pony lipstick on Twinkler and she still was lipstick stains on her mouth. I guess it's a good thing she didn't come with hoof polish.

One of my ponies got played with in the water a lot and rust-splosion! Eww!

Otherwise I tried to take good care of them. They got groomed and lovingly stored on the bookshelf when I was done playing with them.

I was pretty good to my ponies. I used to take a few of them in the bath tub: Water Lily, Sweet Stuff, Moonstone, and Morning Glory.

I'd hate to see how those ponies look on the inside now.

Oooh I have another one. I already had Wave Dancer and I was thrilled when my sister gave me Baby Surfy as a birthday gift.

My two favorite things in the whole wide world were MLPs and bubble baths so naturally I spent hours in the tub with my ponies and sea ponies were the best.

But I was sad because Baby Surfy wouldn't float upright in the water like Wave Dancer. I realized Wave Dancer had a weighted tail.

All right! I could do something about this. I had to fix it Right Now. I got out of the tub and I ran outside into the gravel driveway (buck naked) and picked out the perfect size stone. I ran back in and twisted Surfy's head off and lodged the stone down there and smooshed he until it was way down at the bottom of her tail.

Did it work?

No. It did not work.

I wanted to get the stone out but it wouldn't budge. I bit and bit her tail to squeeze it but it wouldn't come out. I kept biting every bath I took.

Her tail is covered in bite marks.
The stone is still in there.

Worst thing I ever did that was unusual was the day my child self decided that my Sleep Tight really wanted to be a different pony so I customized him to be Baby Chugs (Steamer's son) with 80s bright hot pink nail polish. o,O I still cannot believe I did that, and my baby still has traces of the polish on it even though I decided after a week or two that I wanted Sleep Tight back. I've not been able to spa all my childhood collection yet, so hopefully with some work and a lot of elbow grease I might be able to make him look a little better.

I always took really good care of my toys as a kid. If I hadn't lost my childhood toys in storage then I'm sure they would be total display worthy. However I had a set of ponies that were designated for bath time and I would always play with them in the bath. I believe these bath time ponies were only McDonalds ones though so rest assured

I actually put the stickers that came with G3 styling Rainbow Dash on her...it was a pain in the ass to remove the sticker stains later. Plus I braided her mane and tail multiple times and she has a really messy, undetangleable mane.

I have to confess as well...

I had Salty when I was little and Dutch Star Pony (still have her). However, for some reason my Salty had gotten really frizzy hair. I kept combing and styling it, washing it. I was always happy when her hair was wet, cause then it looked like it wasn't frizzy anymore. But as soon as it dried up the frizz came back ofcourse. So frustrated as I was. I took a pair of scissors and cut of the right amount to get rid of the frizz. But the frizz kept coming back after a few days. So I repeat, and repeat, and repeat...untill here was only a tiny bit of tail and mane left. (Like those farm horses who pull the plow). Dunno how they are called in English. I did the same thing with Star Pony, but I only did it to her tail and not the mane. But I never cut her tail as short as Salty.

But that wasn't the only thing. My sister had Steamer. And her her hair was STUNNING! Long, soft and silky. Just how I wanted to have my Salty's hair. (I have to go back a little because I forgot to mention this part) My sister always kept her Steamer at the feet side of the bed with all her other stuffed animals. So me as a kid thought that would do the magic. So I kept Salty at my feet side of the bed as well for a couple of days. Expecting her to magically have soft and silky hair. Ofcourse that didn't work. And that's where the cutting came in.

But after I saw how I mutilated my Salty's hair, I was so upset and ragingly jealous of my sister's Steamer. That I took the scissors again and cut off Steamer's tail to her ankles. It felt good!

But now ofcourse I feel horrible about it. How jealousy can make yo do such bad things. My sister still has hers. My Salty was so damaged in the end that I threw her away. But I bought a new one on Ebay when I started my Pony collecting again.

Here is my childhood Star Pony with cut tail and now that I look at her better. She might have had a mane trim as well:

He was a favourite of mine when I was a kid. I once lent him to a friend, and he came back tattooed with ballpen ink. After that, I wanted to pretty him up even more.

I put glitter glue on him.

I also thought that he deserved a more colourful mane and tail, so I coloured both in the colours of the rainbow with watercolours.

The result being that after a few years of storage, the watercolour has stained his neck.

*sigh* At least I can say I was a very creative child?
After finding him again in grandma's basement, I cleaned him up, scrubbed the glitter glue off with acetone, and am currently sunfading him.

Along with Sugarberry, who has had nail polish on her hooves for well over ten years now. Needless to say, it left some nasty stains. I spared you the image of her with a screw in her tailhole... She'd lost her tail, and the screw was holding the replacement there.

His overall color has miraculously not changed very much. I was pretty worried with him being a light purple and all, but he's holding up very well! Should be finished in an other one or two weeks.

I took pretty good care of my ponies, though there were a few whose manes I cut really short.  It was because they were boys.  We got the later years of G1 (year 8 on) when I was a kid collecting, so I didn't even know about boy-pose ponies.

And in my defense, the ones I cut really were official boy ponies!  And it didn't seem right to me that they looked exactly the same as girl ponies so they needed to have short hair so you could tell.

The thing that's really bad is that they were rare UK ponies.  With hair that cannot be replaced because it's coloured horizontally, if you know the ones I mean. :drunk:  I remember my mum telling me that I'd regret it one day!  And I do.

But I stand by my logic at the time :p  I still have them and I'll always love them!

For the most part, I took good care of my toys, but I think one snafu did happen when I was convinced that you could dye a ribbon using a marker pen! So I took a nice pink ribbon, covered it in green pen... and put it on Posey. It looked pretty nice on her, but the green streak it left in her hair certainly didn't! XD

Any pony I had went into the bathtub with me.  Or the pool.  I remember Aadra used to always give me grief over my childhood Peppermint Crunch because she was so discolored from pool water - eventually she bought me a MOC for my birthday, lol!  But the majority of my ponies just show wear from being so well loved.  My SS ponies have rubs from being held, curls have been brushed straight, MM symbols are rubbed off, flutter wings are missing, etc.

Oh, and one of my cats hated the Perm Shoppe and peed in it when my back was turned for 5 minutes.  Saddest day ever when Mom threw it out.  Poor Fifi was homeless.  :(

I wasn't really hard on my toys as a kid, and was generally pretty careful.  Still, at some point Spritzy (Dream Beauty) got dropped and one of her legs snapped (I think she may have fallen off a shelf, I'm not sure).  She was a tripod for a long time as Dad couldn't really find a strong enough glue to hold up to a 6 year old playing with things (but therefore she became grizzled and wise a queen amongst ponies... at least to a child).  I have glued her back together since finding her leg in a box of other childhood things:

It's discolored with resin, but I'm not sure there's much to be done about it.  I don't really mind.

I have some ponies with those wonderful nail polish stains too.
In Germany we had colorful chalk pencils for writing on our small chalkboards in grade 1, and I remember how much I loved the pink one. I dipped it in water and some ponies got eye shadow, which was impossible to remove even back then. My Princesses all suffered this fate.
I also took baths with ponies, and some of them even went to the beach with me. Salt water, sun, and sand, great combination! But they were well loved and have many stories to tell the mint ones! Happy memories!
I hated the forelocks of Peachy and Cotton Candy, so those got cut off at once.

I was HORRIBLE to my toys. :lookround: I used to give them facepaint all over. It didn't come off. And of course I was also a hair cutter... But the worst thing I did was voilently cramming poor Baby Squirmy between the door and the post, because she was "bad". I was only 4, but still. :lookround:

I regret these things SO MUCH, and now, as an adult, I am extra careful with my things. I will definitely teach my children to be good to their toys, because if they are anything like me, it won't come naturally. XD

I never really 'ruined' my ponies intentionally, but my Blossomforth's hair was brushed so much that most of it fell out and when I noticed that Star Catcher's fabric wings were coming apart I sewed them back together at age 10-ish with white thread... It's incredibly visible but I don't mind :P She is also basically pale yellow from being in the sun so much, I would put her in the little shelf at the back of the car when we went on drives so she could see outside!

I threw a sparkle baby firefly on my roof from the trampoline when I was a kid. She was "flying". She lived there for a good year on the other side of the mountain. Haha a year later my dad was cleaning the gutters and got her down. She was faded white from the sun!

I also painted a baby chuck e cheese silver with acrylic paint because I had two.

I was usually quite good to my ponies, but there were one or two things I did to them that I really shouldn't have...

Lickety Split got a really frizzy mane and tail, and at age nine of course I didn't have any idea how to deal with frizz, so I trimmed out the frizzy bits. So my childhood Lickety Split has a thin-looking, shortish mane and tail. She doesn't look too bad, but you can tell some hair's missing  :P

I got Baby Seashore at a jumble sale somewhere, and as I had never heard of Watercolour Baby Sea Ponies I had no idea that her soft, thin mane was made of special colour-changing fibre... so I dyed it. With food colouring and nail polish. All these years later I could kick myself for doing that - I got the food colouring out, but her forelock is still dark pink from nail polish that stubbornly refuses to come out  >_<

Apart from that, most of my childhood ponies are in fairly good condition. If only I could say the same for my dolls  -_-

I don't remember which one but my step sister and I were playing with her ponies and working on crafts. One of them ended up with a bit of glitter paint (it was something like pink acrylic, with glitter, and some glue mixed in that Memere made) in her mane and I think a swish on her leg but that's about it. We threw them sometimes so they could fly but they were never actually damaged from that because we'd aim for the couch. Other than that my one pony was probably stored horribly. I played carefully for the most part but hated cleaning my room so I just threw everything on the floor. If I had to clean my room I just threw everything on the closet floor lol.

Also - now that I think of it. I think I trashed one of my step sister's ponies too because I was mad at her. I had gotten in trouble for not cleaning my room. And half the stuff was hers. So I pulled all mine out and put all of hers in the trash. I'm pretty sure Ivy and her accessories were in there.
