Title: What do you use for tinsel?
Post by: NovelNerd on July 16, 2016, 08:50:32 AM
If you're adding hair to self what do you use and where do you get it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've ordered hair tinsel from eBay (China, I believe).  Very affordable (think it was less than $5 and free shipping). Took about two weeks to get in, just a heads up.

There are tons of colors.  I chose the hair tinsel that is higher quality, intemded for human use .  I think the strands are about 36 inches in length, which I trimmed and rerooted with marshmallow dollyhair on a Star Hopper. (It was pearl iridescent tinsel, and a bit hard to see in pics, but I included a photo below).

I know that both Retrodolls.uk and Retrodolls US (https://www.etsy.com/shop/retrodollsus?section_id=12738149) sell tinsel online. I wish Dollyhair did too.

There's some thread too. I think it's called Sulky. Not sure at the moment. You can get it at the craft store.

I order from a shop on etsy.  It's human tinsel, the kind you tie in.  She had all the colors I needed, but I don't think she sells anymore.  I'll have to look into it.  It was really easy to just slip a few strands into the plugs after I rehaired.

@ sweetlittlejenny

The Sulky you mean is called Sulky Sliver Metallic and is a product by Gütermann (a German brand).

@ sunshine29102

Can you hint me to the ebay seller (China) please?

Sending you a PM, as I don't think we can post links...

I'd you ebay search "300's Hair tinsel" you should get lots of results. I was mistaken, though. It was 28 inch strands, not 36.

I find it really hard to get plain colours, as opposed to the holographic rainbow-shimmer stuff.  I once got some blue tinsel that I used to reroot Sky Rocket (sparkle pony), but can't remember where I got it from!

When I did not have access to online suppliers, I found tinsel at Fishing stores. Where you pick up material to make your own Flies for fishing. They have lots of fancy tinsel and other stuff for customs there.  :)
