Title: Blind Bag Ponies, strangely addictive. Do you agree with me? :)
Post by: Pony-mommy on July 13, 2016, 05:45:09 AM
Hey everyone!

Growing up playing with my beloved G1 ponies, I still prefer the look of the original girls over the new G4 ponies.
However, that being said, I've recently fallen victim to Blind Bag Pony collecting

When I went toy shopping for my little girl, I picked up 2 blind bags that I found by the check-out lane.

That's how it all began...  :)

It's so easy to get hooked on these! Especially since you can avoid getting doubles using the oh-so-useful cheat codes on the bottom of the packages.

I don't have too many at the moment, as I haven't started collecting that long ago. However, my collection is growing rapidly

This is what I have so far:

Wave 13 B - 3 ponies
Wave 14 A - 1 pony
Wave 14 B - 12 ponies
Wave 15 A - 12 ponies
Wave 15 B - 9 ponies

Do you find those blind bag ponies as addictive as I do?

If any of you care to also share a photo of your collection, I would love to see it!!   :)

I know that I'll get addicted to these little cuties... that's why I haven't started buying any! XD

Love your collection with all their cards still, though!

I used to collect blind bag ponies, until the only local store that stocked them raised the price to 6 euros apiece.

Nope.  I cannot see the sense or value in a tiny nub of plastic for $6.

The thrift stores bag 'em up and sell 5 for $4.99 so if I somehow enjoyed the tiny figures, I could get them that way and they still would be pretty random.

I like a big pony that fills my hands,  with luscious long hair to brush.

They're super adorable but I'm not inclined to own them really. That being said I know that if I did buy any I would start hunting them down so I try to avoid them.

Funko mystery boxes on the other hand. Love picking those up if I want a surprise for myself.

Agreed. I used to be hooked on em, then the distribution started getting crappy, people always vandalized em and it seemed they were coming up with a new wave every month (I couldn't keep up) so I just stopped buying blind bags. Not to mention I kinda hate hunting for specific blind bags, I would buy the box but the prices kill it for me....

Granted I'll buy one here and there but actively hunting- no. Its been stated again and again there's ALOT of potential in these blind bags to become brushables, Hasbro could be using those $3-$6 on producing existing BB characters into brushables.

I can't get enough of the translucent ones.

What a coincidence, my Blind Bag addiction started today  I've always been a G3 enthusiast, but have recently started thinking about buying some G4s otherwise I will regret not having some in the future when generations change. So I think the best idea was blind bags - cheap and small, not taking much room on my pony self. So I got two today and I fell in love! I guess this is the start of BMLPF's BB addiction

When they first came out and were less than $2 apiece I was inclined to collect them. Now that they've raised the price insanely and they keep churning them out, I can't stay interested. Sorry to be a party pooper. I just prefer brushables.

I feel a little like this- maybe these will be the Petite Ponies of the future, the hard to find tiny things that get swept up or thrown to the bottom of the toybox. I haven't been actively collecting them, but I do love how they look and that I can fit one in my pocket in case I need a covert pony. (This is what "not active collecting" looks like in my world!)

This is how I display the ones I have- the cards are in a binder that I put... somewhere around here... But I need to make another one, this one is overflowing now. I also have a Hot Wheels car display thing like this that I put combs in, but it would work for BB's, too!

but... I do feel like I might be getting over my addiction recently. I've not been as excited about new ones coming out and have run out of display space and think I might give up these and focus on just brushables. Having so many, I've started forgetting their names and am not getting as much enjoyment from them anymore. It's to a point where I don't know if I want to just keep a few select favorites or just let the whole lot go. They are very fun to collect and super cute but I get overwhelmed with collections easily I guess  ^^;

^ That's a pile of 195 ponies btw, all different characters except 4 which are variants I couldn't choose which I liked more.

WOW!!! What an impressive collection! You must have been collecting them for years! :)

I only have 37 ponies, and I don't even know all of them by name! Haha.

I love to lay out all the cards though, and then match all ponies to their card. Like a puzzle   :nerdy:

I would like to see them come out with some new poses though, because they keep using the same ponies over and over again - just painting them in different colours!

I started really getting in to the blind bags when the glittery ones came out but like someone else mentioned they started coming out so fast that I couldn't keep up so I haven't gotten any for a long time.

I love to collect them. So far I have everyone from Wave 1 til 14. The only ones I'm missing are some Wave 15 ones and the golden Daring Do one. :) (and of course the ones who got just announced)

Thanks, Pony-mommy! I started collecting them right when they first released in the US.

I love them, but the waves started coming thick and fast and they weren't always out here, so at some point I gave up and am actually thinking of paring down what I have. I think I have the first 10 waves complete? Might be missing a couple from 10.

Never bought one in my life and don't intent to. I didn't know the price untill I read this thread. Seems way too much for such a tiny piece of plastic.

I understand that it can be addictive, cause since you can't see what's inside, there's always a chance of getting something special. But the fact that remains that you might get a figure you already have. That must suck.

I remember buying Pokemon cards when I was little and getting the same damn cards in the pack for 7.99 euro each. Maybe getting 1 or 2 every time that I didn't have yet.

The main reason is that I simply don't care for G4. I have 3 G4 pluh of characters I liked from the show. I started watching the show VERY late, about 3 months ago.

I used to be into it big time. I have complete sets (including the display boxes for 3) of Wave 1,3,4,5, and 6, and an incomplete 2, plus several of those BB size sets, and a scattering of the newer waves. And my custom set of G1 characters.  It was fun at first running around to every Walmart in the area, looking at the bag codes to find the ones I needed (I did buy 1 complete set online). But anymore it's just the same ponies over and over with slight modifications. I am looking forward to the Nightmare Night set. Especially Luna's chariot.

I was pretty into the blind bags until Wave 12. Before then they'd been on a good kick of making new characters, but ever since W12 it's been too heavy on rereleasing not just individual figures but entire waves, and I'm just... not there for that. I get the impression that all the budget for creativity is spent on the story packs and things nowadays.

Blind bags got me into collecting MLP.  I used to prefer them over the brushables for the lower price and more convenient size. But ever since they've jacked up prices, they've had less appeal, and I spent the money on other pony toys. I love the FiM collection ones, though.  I bought all of the first two sets last year, and will get the new one once they're all out in stores and on sale.

I really like blind bags and their sets :) I miss a few of wave 2 and waves 13 and 15.
Unfortunately they are very hard to come by these days over here.  Online I can buy them for 2,50 but then there is the shipping costs.

From Toysxl must have been recent then since I haven't seen them when I was over there not long ago, And Claires charges 4 euros for a bag so thats the last place where to buy them.

Yes! Blind bags are my favorite things to collect actually. The little blind bags like you showed in the picture, Funko blind boxes, etc. I definitely prefer molded ponies over brushables so that may be a reason. But I think they are so adorable and tiny. I have TONS of them, at least a hundred. I would take a picture but they're not all in the same location. I use them with my g3 ponyville playsets so they're all set up in little scenes across my room. Plus I just bought a bunch more so those aren't on display yet. But I definitely love them.

I have to agree with most of you that the blind bag ponies indeed are a bit pricey for what they are. I'm paying 3 Euro per bag.

However, that being said, I'm happy to say that I was finally able to complete wave 15 today  :)

It's nice to have a complete collection. If not, the ones I'm missing would haunt me forever, haha.

I wonder when wave 16 is being released?

I dont think I would buy them either. Not just the price I love the old standard brushable over the small little tiny ponies. I never was into petite ponies also. :/ To each their own.

I was really curious so I got a bling bag today at walmart and paid $3.50 for it... really disappointing considering that her paint is messed up or not applied properly in several areas, and her head is a very different color from her body. :/ I like the little ones but I don't think I'll be buying any more.

I've purchased several blind bags before but quickly lost interest.  However,  I adore the FiM collection.  It has buildings and ponies in unique poses.  I'm working on fixing up a space to build a pony village and train display using the train with the track.

For anyone who is interested in the blind bag ponies but are turned away because of the price, you may consider checking Fred Meyer (in the U.S., idk if this is in other countries). They have sales every now and then for 50% off MLP, buy one get one free, etc. so it makes the ponies around $1.50. I always wait and get my blind bag ponies from there on that sale and it saves me a bunch of money. There's also some arena members who sell them for $1 each, just check! My Walmart have also been reducing the older collections to $2 to make room for the new set I think. Also target's app Cartwheel has sales on MLP quite often which can allow you to snag the blind bag ponies way cheaper.  ;)

These are the pony related things that I buy the most, I really like the clear/translucent type ones especially. They look cute if you sort them by color and display them that way. Yes they are just recolors but I enjoy having them.

Around here they are about $2.88 so I don't think thats all that bad at all unless you're trying to get the whole wave.

I didn't get into them immediately, even though they're quite inexpensive here in the states. I got tired of waiting for Hasbro to do more brushable boys but with only Prince Troll-hair to satiate my need to collect in this Gen I'm mostly customizing now.

Mostly only boys and unique poses. Including as many error and fakies as I've found too. I felt I had to get all of the Mane6 and princesses as well. I had two of my Spikes beside the uni boys until he decided that he would no longer be displayed.  :P

How come they don't do Brushable Blind Bags?

I feel they got that kind of thing out of their system (mostly) back in G1 with Petites. McDs ponies still follow this model but they would rather not put up cost for something with such a high profit margin and fewer things to check like blindbags.

Custom shelves. Since I'm decently handy I felt I could make something to make the whole collection seem more adult.  ^^;  One Lowes trip and about $35 later I have my display.

These are so SUPER addictive! When I went grocery shopping yesterday, and had a quick look at the toy section, I was excited to find some wave 10 ponies.
I was happy as a child

I didn't have any of those yet, so I picked up 7 ponies.

And then when out shopping today, I was surprised to find some wave 16 blind bags! I didn't even know those were available yet!
Imagine my excitement!

So I picked up 5 of those   :good:

I'm happy to have expanded my collection a little bit.

Here's the ponies I got:
