Title: Plasticizer leaching from G4 ponies? (UPDATE)
Post by: Twizel on July 02, 2016, 08:11:47 AM
I just bought several new blind bag ponies from a seller on ebay. They were brand new from the package, but as I opened each one, they felt... not sticky, but definitely greasy, and left my fingers with a greasy residue which I had to wash off. Is this plastic breakdown? Already?
:enraged:

I know in G3 and G2 have had problems with leaching plasticizers in translucent glitter ponies. But these were blind bags released just last year! Has anyone else had this problem with translucent blind bags (wave 13)? My other blind bags are fine, but the translucent Wave 13s felt funky enough to raise my alarms.

What do you guys think? Am I out of my mind? Or is this plastic breakdown? If it is, how can I stop it and remove the greasy feel? Do I need to worry about the safety of handling these, or letting children handle them, or off-gassing harmful chemicals, which I know happens with some other types of plastic...

I'm freaking out a little because I had to throw out my G3 Divine Shines because they had such severe breakdown. I don't want to toss out any more ponies  :yikes:

EDIT: I'm pretty sure they are legit, as they have Hasbro on their hooves, and the MLP logo.

UPDATE!
So I scrubbed the ponies in a bucket of hot water and dishwashing soap, with just a hint of acetone nail polish remover (not enough to damage paint or plastic) for good measure. The greasy layer completely came off! They now feel smooth, clean, and dry, very similar to the neon ponies' plastic, and don't leave my fingers feeling gross!  :frolic: :frolic: :frolic:
I'm going to hope and assume that you guys were right and it was mold release oils or something. I've never heard of that happening before, but I'm thrilled they cleaned up easily, plus now they smell nice

Optimistically, it might just be residue from some kind of mold release, like when you use cooking spray on a muffin tin. If the greasy feel doesn't come back after washing them with soap and water, I wouldn't worry about it. ;)

I also vote probably oil from the molding process

My daughter's sparkle blind bags are fine. It could be something else.

are you sure they are real blind bags and not the knock offs that have been on ebay for a bit? that's the only thing I can think of

Surely the plastic isn't breaking down already? I say wash them a bit and see what happens :)

I bought the box set of Wave 13, so it looked pretty real! It came in the same display box you see on hasbrotoyshop, $60 free shipping. Each were still sealed in their plastic bag.

That was why I'd thought plastic breakdown... plasticizer off-gassing and creating residue on the pony because it was in an airtight bag?

I've just checked, and they have the MLP logo and Hasbro name printed on the bottom of their feet, so I think they're legit!

It could just be factory dirt.

I'm also going to say oily/greasy release agents that they put in the factory molds. I've had non-MLP toys that have the same problem! A wet towel and a good rub will take most of it off, usually.

It could simply be the texture, I know the neon ones had an odd, waxy texture and that the early glitter ones were covered in an external layer of glitter, so it could be that's what the clear plastic feels like

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to try giving them a good cleaning and see what happens :)

If they are still bad after a cleaning when everypony else is having good results, then I'd contact your seller for warranty replacement or something.  Maybe contact them anyway, sounds like it could be a bad batch or stored badly like left in the sun on a loading dock too long or something.
