Title: Recommended Episodes for a first time G1 Viewer?
Post by: Chelsea7 on April 26, 2016, 11:31:52 AM
Okay, I caved XD

I've loved MLP since I was a kid, when G2 was a thing. However, G2 never had its own show, and so my first MLP television show was actually G4, which I enjoy watching.

However, I find it to be of great insult to not give the original MLP G1 80s cartoon a chance. I have watched the MLP Movie, with the Smooze, but that's about it!

Can anyone recommend particularly good episodes for a newbie viewer like myself? I'd like to watch more, plus I am trying to learn how to draw a distinct pony style, and I feel like watching more animation might help.

Thanks in advance!

Rescue from Midnight Castle ... very much one when introducing people to G1 MLP this is the one I always recommend. :D The animation style is lovely to look at, really fantastic villain who doesn't change his ways, the sea pony song oh how that can get stuck in one's head for ages.

Rescue at Midnight Castle is a great place to start. :) As Leave a  Whisper said we all have our favorites.

I recommend

Rescue at Midnight castle

Escape from Catrina

The Glass Princess (everyone should see the pony wash scene)

The Golden Horseshoes

The Magic Coins

Mish Mash Melee

Baby It's Cold Outside

The Prince and the Ponies (although you have to put up with the Baby Ponies speaking in baby talk.)

I also enjoy My Little Pony tales but it takes place in an entirely different Ponyland.

She has a solo song section in Baby it's Cold Outside ;) A rousing song to brighten the hearts of the troops. :) I always think of it as her song, even though that annoying Megan takes it over I believe.

I could put money on this thread before I even clicked it to have mass recommends for Rescue at Midnight Castle. I think it remains the classic. But I also think that there's fun stuff in a lot of the episodes. How expensive is the DVD box set of all episodes these days? ;)

I only read solo on the first sentence...And then i was imagining Galaxy shredding on an electric guitar.Quite an epic scene to see.

Make sure you see the uncut versions of Rescue at Midnight Castle and Escape from Catrina! :) The edited-for-time/DVD cuts of those cut out some of the songs.

Nope, Galaxy sings "We're Not Gonna Freeze" entirely by herself. (I think that's one of the only G1 songs to be sung solely by one character, actually)

Does she? Hrm. My first instinct was that she did, but then I thought Megan sang some of it. Maybe I'm just predisposed to expect that because Megan butts into so many songs.

I like "I'm not gonna freeze", though. It has spark xD.

I have only seen RAMC in its episode-cut form, and I did watch it first and so far I am only less than halfway through the rest of the episodes, watching them in order...The End of Flutter Valley was a bit ponderous at 10 redundant episodes to get through first but it was fun to know where the intro footage came from (ramc) and I love the  way Applejack opens her mouth in shock just before getting tackled by Firefly's bad landing!

Does anyone (I would say anypony but we are talking G1 in this thread) know where to get the unedited Rescue and Midnight Castle?  I couldn't find it on DVD or anywhere else I know to look.  Help!

I argee with everyone else! Start with Rescue at Midnight Castle and Escape from Catrina!

I tend to like the darker, scarier episodes like Somnambula and Return of Tambelon. Definitely watch Quest of the Princess Ponies and The Golden Horseshoes!

Sadly the uncut version was never released on DVD.  Whenever I want to watch it, I have to pull out my trusty old VHS tape.

But here it is on YouTube.
This is only the first of 3 parts.  You can search for it under "my little pony pilot uncut"

I still have a few I need to knock off, but overall the series is very charming.

Thanks so much Sunset for the link to uncut ramc!  :frolic:

I didn't see anyone mention one of my favorites so far, "The Glass Princess" where the pig princess is shockingly powerful after she steals the pony magic.  I especially like the scene where the ponies are put through a conveyor-belt carwash-style ponywash and how shocked the poor ponies look while the Raptorians are brushing their hair and putting terrible makeup on them: so ironic as this is what happens to our little ponies in real life!  And their manes grow back in seconds, unlike our real life ponies, too bad!

This episode was kinda bland and boring for me except for Shady which is a character i love because i was totally like her in the past, and this scene which made me think hasbro knew the future (while being a great way to increase their sells because little girls will try this on their ponies thinking their hair will grow back).

Does anyone know why the art style from the first episode differs so much from the rest of the episodes in the series?

I love the way they draw the ponies in RAMC, and while I like the design of the ponies in other episodes, I wish they kept the old style for the entire series.

From what I understand the people who animated Dungeons and Dragons did RAMC and then they switched to different animators for the rest.

Actually, it was a change in character designer.  RaMC was designed by Takashi from Dungeons & Dragons.  Different model designers were brought in afterward.
Title: Re: Recommended Episodes for a first time G1 Viewer?

I'm sure it was a different animation company as well.  Basically, a cheaper company.  MLP & Friends has very basic "everyone is viewed from the side 90% of the time" storyboarding, while RaMC has really high quality storyboarding / choreographing.

Like, count how many "camera angles" they used just to show Firefly taking off with Megan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSyd21j1PpA

Angle 1 - Megan gets on and Firefly trots out of "camera view"
Angle 2 - Firefly galloping up the cliff (with a dynamic moving background of clouds to show motion--more extra expense)
Angle 3 - Straight-on view of Megan's D: face
Angle 4 - Firefly leaps off the cliff
Angle 5 - Firefly diving straight towards the camera
Angle 6 - Firefly recovers from her dive and swoops upward

So, that's six different backgrounds, some with movement behind the main characters, just to show a pegasus taking off.  You would neeever see something like that in MLP & Friends.  They would show Surprise (or whoever) from the side, Megan would get on, and Surprise would do that awkward "flapping straight up" thing that MLP & Friends pegasi do.

Just one of the reasons RaMC is my favorite piece of MLP animation.

Toei animated both specials, some of the movie, and some episodes of MLP & Friends.  AKOM handled the rest.  There were also different teams of animators at each studio.

Another issue was time.  The year Rescue at Midnight Castle was made; Hasbro's workload for Toei was one five-episode miniseries for G.I. Joe, 16 episodes of Transformers, and Rescue at Midnight Castle.  Compare that to 55 episodes of the Transformers, 49 of G.I. Joe, the Glo Friends Christmas special, Escape from Catrina, and the Super Sunday Block the following year.  Then full seasons of Transformers and G.I. Joe, four movies, 26 episodes of Jem and the Holograms, and 50 episodes of My Little Pony 'n Friends in 1986.  Less that needs to be animated, the more time and effort can go into the animation process.  Remember, every cell drawn by hand, aligned by hand, and photographed.  No computer assistance at all.
Title: Re: Recommended Episodes for a first time G1 Viewer?
Post by: Sunset on April 28, 2016, 11:24:32 AM
It's also worth noting that RMAC was originally just called "My Little Pony" and was billed as a special not as the pilot for a show.  It's quit possible that there were no plans for the other special, the movie, or the series till later.  It's possible that we might not have gotten any of the rest if the toy line hadn't gotten more and more popular.

As others have said, as the demand for more animation increased, Hasbro had to find a cheaper solution.

I agree though that the animation for RAMC is much nicer than later stuff.

Some VHS copies of Rescue of at Midnight castle had animated footage of the Rainbow Pones.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRzsENtVjRM  Maybe they were planning to do another special featuring them but then decided to use other ponies? I agree the animation was better in RAMC.

Oh if I didn't have something else to add I wouldn't burden this thread with a response.....but sorry about that, and thank you for pointing out that others DID mention Glass Princess....notice I said "I didn't see anyone mention" because if I didn't see it, it could certainly still be there....I am glad others liked it too!

So the instantly-regrowing pony hair scene is behind all the haircut ponies on eBay?  hahaha.  I wonder how many did get haircuts because of that scene, hm....when my mom was very little (long before my little pony) she cut off a lot of her favorite stuffed animal's hair and was very upset when she found out it doesn't grow back!

I notice that many of the favorite episodes people have mentioned are still ahead of me so I better get back to watching them up!  Thanks!

As for the ramc animation, all I know is it does look very different...more thorough yes, but also much darker, and I like both styles because while the regular show stuff is more limited it's also brighter in appearance (thought not necessarily brighter as to peril for our poor innocent little ponies! :yikes: ).

I'd definitely recommend 'Return of Tambelon' and RAMC. I'd also like to give special mention to 'The Magic Coins' here, as it is tuly a fantastic episode (as are 'Crunch the Rockdog' and 'The Golden Horseshoes' two I'd also like to mention).

'Mish Mash Melee' is a good one to start on though, due to its short length and strong characterizations.

When I was watching this episode a few days ago I found myself thinking, "If the Raptorians just want to cut off the ponies' hair, what's the purpose of giving Gusty a perm and putting makeup on all 3?" Of course I doubt I thought of that as a kid, but I wonder if any kids did.

Yes.  Done to her by Heart Throb on accident no less.

Something that always stuck with me from "The Magic Coins" was where Galaxy poked the crystal cacti to get water.  For some reason, I found that awesome as a kid and still do now.

Speaking of Michael Reaves stories, I've been binging on Dungeons & Dragons and it seems like he recycled a lot of ideas he had from that show into My Little Pony.  Like the episode "City on the Edge of Midnight" involved an evil city similar to Tambelon that was stealing kids.

Maybe they did such a bad job on the ponies make up to embarrass them?

Ponyfan

Or maybe this scene is just imagined by three pony toys and...Okay Okay i stop with my crazy theory.

My faves are the ones at our local videostore from childhood--  Magic Coins, Bright Lights and Quest of the Princess Ponies.  And Tambelon, of course (that tape turned up later at the store), but the first 3, we must have hired them a hundred times and eventually bought them when the store closed down!

'Oh for a Rainy Day' has got to be one of my favourite pony songs, from the Magic Coins.  (That episode seems to be considered the best of the series, it's such a great story and beautifully made!)

I also loved the one with the first tooth babies having to babysit (not sure if that was Ice Cream Wars or the Prince and the Ponies, it's been many years since I watched them!)  I had two younger sisters who I had to babysit at the time and I thought the song was funny ;)

And of course the Golden Horseshoes featured Mimic :)

I found it a bit weird seeing the episodes we didn't see as kids for the first time as an adult, not having the nostalgia of seeing though a kid's eyes.  The early ones, RaMC and Escape from Catrinwere the exceptions, they're amazing, but even ones like Somnambula, Mish Mash Melee and the Glass Princess were a bit odd to me.  The childhoood ones will forever be branded on my heart, though

I love this pic, I need to check this episode out.

Makes me wonder if this is how my ponies feel when they get a wash+dry

Crunch the Rockdog
The Magic Coins and
Sonambula

Are my top 3 favorites.  :). I'm a big Wind Whistler fan, so that should explain the first two.  I also  the boys.

I still always find it funny how badly they react to the drought in the Magic Coins, though.  Like, they're dying of thirst and Megan's idea is to sing.  :P.  You know how much saliva you use up by singing?

This might be why they shouldn't always listen to Megan.  :)

Chelsea7, the Glass Princess screen shots PonyFan supplied here are before their makeover began to go bad...it's a fun scene for us, terrible scene for the poor ponies!

My impression was the purpose was to prepare the hair for harvest, the dyes are obvious later in the weaving.  I wondered too about the makeup...seemed to serve only to humiliate them, and they certainly felt humiliated afterwards!

Porcina didn't think their hair was clean enough to be used for her cloak so that's why she ordered the Raptorians to put them in through the wash machine before they cut it but the curling/makeup scene was probably just to humiliate the ponies or to show them that the Raptorians could do anything they wanted with them or it could have been just to make the scene longer.

RaMC was great! Firefly is such an awesome character, it kind of makes me bummed out that I don't really like RD in G4, since she was based off of Firefly..
I also really liked the art style for RaMC, it stinks they changed it

I really, really enjoyed Somnambula. The BB Ponies were great!! And the plot was genuinely kind of eerie, and having the ponies drawn aged like that was genuinely unnerving, especially for a kids cartoon

The Return of Tambelon- great because of its dark story/ unicorns are the focus (my favorite)

Lastly, Baby It's Cold Outside- for Galaxy, of course.

It's funny that Galaxy is my favorite pony in my collection, but she's honestly my favorite character in the show!
I feel like I can relate to her because out of my group of friends I am always the one to "sense" if something is wrong, or will go wrong, and I tend to be adventurous and brave at times ^^

My love for MLP was largely encouraged by the Movie...my poor mum and dad had to rent that from the video store every other week for me and I remember several tearful afternoons going home because some other little girl was lucky to have rented it :P

So that will always be the one I recommend above everything else - I love it!
