Title: Do you wear shoes inside?
Post by: Sandi on February 03, 2016, 03:40:38 AM
I know in some countries you do and some you don't. In Sweden we do not wear shoes inside the house. It's considered rude to walk in with shoes in somebody else's house. The same goes for a lot of schools. The two schools I went to from 1st to 9th grade you took off your shoes. In the highschool I went to you were allowed to wear shoes inside. For you who wear shoes inside; doesn't it get really dirty?  :P

I always take my shoes off when I am at home or go to someone else's home. I just think it's polite and I feel guilty if I don't. The only time I don't is when it's so dirty I don't want to be in my socks and the host says to keep them on...otherwise I end up staying at the door. We don't take our shoes off in public places like school though.  My mom wears her shoes in the house but that is doctors order due to her having plantar fasciitis or something else with her feet I believe.  She has even been told to wear shoes to go to the bathroom at night!

I'm not sure if it's rude or not in the UK, but we always take shoes off in the house. I don't know whether this was a habit informed by my  mother's work with Japanese people when I was a kid or if it just saved the cleaning, but we've always done it. And, even now, I don't wear my shoes around my uni room. I have slippers instead, although I will wear shoes in the kitchen because it's a communal area.

At proper home, shoes are immediately off on entering the house :)

At secondary school shoes only got taken off/changed for sport lessons, but at primary school we had indoor pumps which we changed into from our outdoor shoes each time we came in (at the start of school, at break and dinner).

Almost my entire family wears shoes in the house, which drives me up the walls... I dont wear them in the house, unless im having to make a ton of trips in and out.. but I usually make sure (if possible) that my reasons for in and out trips are situated near the door so I don't actually have to clomp through the house lol.

I don't like wearing shoes.. In the summer I wear flip flops.. or nothing xD
Even in the winter, I'm usually barefoot.. But I've also never broken that habit of walking on the front of my feet, so I guess that's one reason why I feel like shoes and socks are uncomfortable for me lol. If I had my own house, then I'd definitely strictly forbid people from wearing shoes into my house. That might sound kinda unreasonable? but I've always been rather sensitive to bad vibes I guess, and not knowing where people have been walking or what they've been doing in their shoes has always bugged me when they walk through my house. But since I don't own the house I live in, I can't really make big rules like that.

My family are all from Europe (I dont mean like 10 generations ago, I mean my Grandma is from Germany) and although I was born and raised in the US I was NEVER allowed to walk around in my shoes! Its considered dirty and unsanitary to my family so it kind of stuck with me or I would get spanked LOL. I always take them off near the door on the tile, even now! ^-^

Depends? I often wear shoes that are my inside shoes sometimes, but really I don't like shoes much so when I get home I pull them off. But we don't have carpet and I hate getting things stuck to my feet so I have shoes that slip on and off easily for inside.

We don't wear shoes at home since getting the dirt out of the carpet would be a nightmare. However, we do wear fluffy flip-flops in the kitchen and dining area to prevent slipping on the parquet. Not always, but more often than not.

I'm the only one in my family who doesn't! Partly to be tidy, mostly because I like my feet to be free  :P  I like to sit with my feet tucked under me and shoes get in the way of that! I also like to pick things up off the floor with my toes sometimes. It's good to have that option.

No shoes for me (and the hubby) in my own home, except for some soft slippers as I tend to get cold feet easily (except in summer time of course). I take my shoes off at my parent's place, and when I stay somewhere overnight, but not for just a regular visit, unless I am asked to take them off of course. Same with people visiting us, most visitors leave their shoes on.

I'm not too much of a fan of shoes in the house, and I used to ask visitors to take them off, but it actually happened that people refused to do so because they wanted to spare me the smell of their feet or claimed to have so sweaty feet that they would leave sweat stains on the floor. It's not that my place is dirty or that there are any Lego feet bombs lying around, so it must have been their bad manners. I've stopped asking now. We have tiled or wooden floors everywhere anyways so it is less a hassle to clean it, than to be upset that they plain out refused to take out their shoes.

I used to live in Switzerland for a couple of years and it was really nice there, even craftsmen that had something to do in the house took off their shoes before entering without me needing to say anything. Wouldn't happen here, they'd rather walk around with muddy shoes than take them off!

We wear our shoes indoors here. (and mop the floors regularly) I live in the mountains and always wear boots, so taking them off everytime we came inside would be very annoying. :)

Ever since we bought a house I've been all about the "no shoes inside" rule. I guess I didn't care before in our apartment, but the carpet in our house is super nice and everyone comes in through the kitchen anyway, so I tell everyone to take their shoes off. Plus I love walking around in my bare feet or wearing slippers.

If I go to someone else's house, I always ask before walking all the way in if they would like me to remove my shoes.

If I'm at home or in someone else's house, it's always strictly shoes off, but in public places, I usually keep them on. That said, there's a whole load of awkwardness when it comes to being tattooed; I don't feel comfortable keeping my shoes on while sitting in the chair but whenever I ask the tattooist if I should take them off, it's always met with confused expressions! :S

I always take my shoes off and I have slippers that I wear round the house. We have very light coloured carpets.

When I visit peoples houses I always take my shoes off, I often take my slippers with me to wear in their house too. I have a pair of slippers that live at my partners house :)

I don't even wear shoes when going out of my house haha
Where I live it's rude to remove your shoes in someone's house unless they let you or you ask if you can, but it depends on the people around you at the moment. In my house I hate wearing shoes because my feet are almost always very hot, so I only wear them when I'm too tired to take them off, and when I have to check something out of the house I just go without if I wasn't wearing any haha

At my home Im usualy shoesless, but If I go to somebody house I usually keep them. There is not common take the shoes of in your friends house, only if you are like "really best friends"

Exactly that! People Usually see one as "what are you doing..."

But sometimes when My friends come into my room I ask them to take their shoes of since I have a cute little Tiger carpet and I dont want it to get dirty  >_<

Shoes always come off in the house! Even in public school, we had indoor and outdoor shoes. Outdoor shoes came off in the cloakroom and were replaced with indoor shoes. Dunno, the thought of wearing shoes in my house is just... yuck. Gives me the squicks. Only time I will wear shoes is if I need to make a quick grab of something, and usually it's only if it's right by the door.

when you are at home or in someone elses house, the shoes come off.

When you are inside of another building, unless stated otherwise, the shoes stay on.

Wow, I didn't know it was such a widely spread thing, let alone that it's considererd rude not to remove your shoes when you're at someone else's house. O___O

Inside my own home I take my shoes off, yes, but that's just because I can get more comfortable that way. I will never ever ever ask someone to remove their shoes when they come to my house, for me that would feel like I ask them to sit in their underwear.  :lookround:

I have no idea if that's a Dutch thing or not, I do remember houses where I had to take my shoes off. But those were exceptions, thank God.  XD

I wear them in my home, but I will take them off at someone else's house even if they are wearing theirs around, seems to be the polite thing to do just in case (well, only if I'm walking on carpet I guess, if I'm just in the kitchen or something with hard floors and not going further, I'll keep them on). Some Americans don't like them in the house so I just take them off.

I don't wear shoes in my house. Nor at any of my family's houses.

I find it disrespectful and rude.

When people come to my house, they know that they have to take their shoes off and no one has ever complained.

I guess it's each to their own. :)

I've never worn my shoes in the house. Maybe briefly if I was making multiple trips to load a car and didn't want to take my shoes off every time.
For me and my family its a sanitary thing. There is less dirt in the house to clean later. And living in a city I walk in some dirty places, like lots of homeless areas, and it would just be downright dirty to have all of that on our floors.

When I go to someone's house I always ask if I should leave my shoes on or off to be polite.

I do not wear my shoes in my house -- I take them off at the door. Every jerk who comes to visit me, however, always keeps their shoes on. Grr. Especially maintenance guys -- they always wear their muddy boots in my house when they come to fix stuff and I get so mad! I usually vacuum right after someone like that has been here.

Now, I do have dogs and they don't wear shoes, though, so they do track dirt in the house. I usually vacuum a lot, anyway, though, because there's shedded hair all over the floor (not from the dogs -- from me! I only half joke...).

It's only rude in the US if it is obvious that shoes aren't worn in the house or if you have foot odor/fungus. (Ew) I don't wear shoes in the house and neither do my guests unless it is under five minutes. The shoes do track in dirt, lead, oil, and everything else you can find on the ground. They destroy carpets and make hardwoods gummy. I take my shoes off at houses that are obviously used to taking off shoes. I, however, have a rather severe mental issue with dirty feet. I refuse to go into a dirty house if they want shoes off and most of the people I know don't care about shoes inside.

I prefer to be shoeless as often as possible.

Where I grew up, going outside without shoes was likely to kill you. Scorpions and snakes. Also, ever been stepped on by a horse while barefoot?  >_< up here it's just so wet that parasites are common. Plus people who don't care for their outside cats.  I have always gone shoeless if possible. Free the toes!  :)

I wear house shoes inside the house...which are flip flops basically. I can't stand not wearing something to protect my feet and socks from getting dirty. Heck I even stepped on a sewing needle which stabbed my BAREFOOT  :hmm:, which is another reason I wear house shoes inside the house. Plus I don't like having floor debris catching onto my socks and getting carried into my bed  :X

In Germany, we take our shoes off when we come home, and then wear slippers. However, when we have guests or are guests at someone else's home, we leave the shoes on, and we don't make guests take them off. It's very strange I think, maybe it is because people don't want to have extra slippers around. We would consider it very rude to ask our guests to take their shoes off.
In China, shoes come off at every household you enter, and you always get cozy slippers.

I personally don't in my own house, because it stops the carpet getting crud all worked into it.  But if someone came to my house I would be fine if they left their shoes on.  If I was visiting someone I'd do whatever they do in their house.  Usually with the people I know, that's leave shoes on.

I take off my outdoor shoes when I come in and put on slippers instead (I don't like walking around without shoes altogether because my feet get cold). When I'm at a friend's place for the first time, I'll ask them whether they'd like me to take my shoes off.

I thought about this and maybe it's partly a climate thing? In countries with a dry climate your shoes won't get very dirty. But in places where it rains/snows a lot your shoes will get dirty, muddy and wet.

I take them off the instant I get in my room. However, I don't think it's considered rude to take them off or leave them on. The exception is when I'm in someone else's home. I'll never take them off, unless I'm sleeping over... Then it seems appropriate.

I used to never wear shoes when I was little. Around the farm and the house it was always barefeet. Going out of course I wore shoes. Around the house now, I never wear shoes, but will if going out. I like my feet to be able to breathe and have some air every now and again, haha! I do wear my house slippers when it's cold out. Tile and wood floors can get pretty chilly in the winter.

I don't.

I'm Canadian but living in the US - in Canada the default is to take your shoes off when you visit someone's house, but here in the US it isn't, so it always throws me when people visit and don't automatically take off their own (I don't ask them to though, that feels like it would be insulting maybe? Or make us come off as fussy?).  And I've visited people here and had them specifically tell me to leave my shoes on, and that seems funny too (although if everyone else is tracking the outside dirt in, why not wear shoes, I suppose!).

I take them off as soon as I come in the front door, same for my friend's homes that have a similar request. Though if I'm going to be going inside/outside a lot and it's not wet/rainy I'll keep them on.

I'm in China so:
I get looks of horror when I leave my shoes on
I get the same look when I walk around the apt barefoot
while visiting, I get slippers that usually don't feet my fat feet

At home in NY:
barefoot at home
Leave shoes on while visiting friends

no, not really. I feel odd wearing shoes in the house.

At work and other public indoor spaces of course I wear shoes. It would be strange not to. But I did once work with a woman who loved to take off her shoes and walk around barefoot.

I always take my shoes off in my home. It just feels so unsanitary not to! I don't usually ask my guests. I don't want to pressure them if they are not comfortable taking their shoes off, but usually when they see me take mine off at the door, they follow my lead. In other people's homes I try to see what they do, and ask if I'm not sure :)

I've never taken my shoes off in public places like schools etc... Though it would be nice. It would probably keep them cleaner!

Barefoot generally means completely bare, with no socks!

If it's cold I'll wear socks around the house, but if it's warm enough I'll wear nothing on my feet.

Canada, both east and west.

Default is shoes off, unless someone requests they stay on. Which is rare. (either because the house is step in half chewed toddler food/pet accident/dog drool messy atm, or someone is doing renos and doesn't want you to get a nail or splinter)

I overheard an argument on a trip I took with a large group mostly made up of Americans and many people from Sweden. where one American claimed that shoes off is only a thing in Japan, and everyone wears outside shoes inside. another American said that NOBODY is allowed in her house with outside shoes and most are the same in her area. I wonder if it's a regional thing?

I don't want outside shoes worn in my house. I also don't want bare feet (without socks) on my carpet as it ruins the pile. If a worker comes, they already bring these slip on things for their shoes. and I have machine washable clean slippers by my door for houseguests so their feet stay warm. :)

Noooo, I definitely take them off at the door of my home. The city streets are filthy! I always heard it was a Japanese thing, which never made sense to me. It seems more like a common sense thing, IMO. But then again I grew up with a Japanese mom, so perhaps what they say is true :P

I guess public places are generally forsaken already though, because I would never consider taking my shoes off in public here (unless it's like, a pool or something). Anywhere the general public wanders is probably filthy already. I wouldn't even wear flip flops or sandals that are too open in public, especially not if I'm going on the subway. Things were different when I lived in Minnesota though. It was much cleaner there, so these things weren't nearly as much of an issue.

I don't like regular shoes so those come right off when I get inside the house. I tend to wear flip flops around the house and sometimes I'll wear them in the yard if it's warm and dry outside. In other ppls houses it depends but some people have houses that I'd rather not take them off because it's kinda dirty.

I try to go shoe free throughout the house, but it all depends on what I'm going to be attempting to accomplish once I enter the house. Other people's houses my shoes are off at the door. (My hubby is notorious for trekking his very dirty work shoes around the house.)

I go barefoot most of the time, but I don't care if other people wear shoes in my house.  The one thing I don't let people do is walk around in their socks.  I can't stand socked feet, they gross me out something fierce.  I'm aware it's weird, and I don't care.

There aren't really any cultural rules about shoes here, it's more of a common sense thing. People from cultures where there are strong social norms find it a bit difficult to adjust.  I have friends who won't step onto the back patio without changing their shoes!  If you're visiting someone with nice plush carpets it's often considerate to take them off.  (Though in some cases, like kids after running around at school, sweaty bare feet or sweaty socks might actually be grosser!)  I usually take my cue from the host.

I prefer to go barefoot at home as I find it more comfortable.  I don't like closed in shoes if I can avoid them because I hate the gross feeling of your feet getting, you know, kinda sweaty.  I wear sandals nearly all the time out of the house.  My mum hates going barefoot though and always has flip flops on at home.

I'd be worried about going barefoot in public places like schools, though, or change rooms at pools, because you could get some kind of infection.

The thing I am a bit funny about is dirty clothes on your bed!  If you've been on public transport, don't come and sit on my bed!!  eww.
