Title: Do you ever take a Hiatus from Pony collecting?
Post by: Neon Sparkle on October 04, 2015, 05:48:27 PM
Just wondering if any others experience this.

I still try to keep up on Pony news when I think about it or hear about something, but I haven't been actively collecting as of lately, mainly as I haven't really been compelled by anything new coming out lately and because I've kinda started to slow down a little and keep things to a minimum in order to keep my Pony collection from reaching it's limit to what I have space for in my house, lol. If I happen to see something I like once in a blue moon I would still pick it up and I don't consider myself to have "stopped" collecting, I just haven't been as active as I used to. I also haven't frequented the forums as often as I used to either, but I do still lurk from time to time.

I've also gotten into Star Wars and WWE as of lately, so alot of my extra fun money has been going towards those. I still treasure my existing collection but I just feel as if I've taken a break for awhile until I see something else that interests me.

Yeah. I'm taking one right now. One, in July I bought one pony that's outta my normal price range, so by my own rules, I have to wait a couple of months before I am allowed a new one. Two my computer is jacked up so I am saving for a new one.

Funny You mention that, I'm currently doing the same. Mine is so old it's not even worth putting more money into to get fixed.

I take brakess all the time. And it's normal.
I can't see how anyone can like one thing all the time for ever.
So yeah it's normal and helthy really.

Not with ponies so far, as I've only been collecting for a short time, but with other collections I definitely have.  That's where I am with American Girl dolls right now.  It's totally normal, I think.  It probably makes you enjoy your collection more in the long run because you aren't buying things for the sake of just buying and having, only getting the things you really like.

I do take breaks as well. It's easier to resist when there isn't too much new coming out that's appealing. And I put limits on my online spending, because it's so easy to get carried away and over spend. And sometimes life just sweeps you up and you need to set collecting aside for a while. But I always have my existing collection to keep me company in the meantime!

I know that feeling.  Money has been tight, the space is limited, and I realized there are only certain things I would like to collect.  I want ones that are show accurate or have neat gimmicks.  I have my favorites for Equestria Girls, I have a decent collection of Funkos, and then my brushables and blindbags.  Then I have my select G3's and my collection of G1s in a box.

I take breaks when there is a big thing I want to save up for.
Earlier this year I took a big break, but I don't know if that counts because all the money saved up went to Bronycon instead of ponies on the internet, hahaah.
But yeah, when I'm not on a break, I only get a couple at a time and they have to be ones I really really want or I usually grab some baits and clean them up (which it is surprising to me what some people consider bait and to me is a perfectly fine pony)and hold off for a while.
After October I'm taking a huge break to save up for the sewing machine I really want (to make ponies with, of course). I just think its a normal thing to do really. Buying new ponies, or anything really is a quick way to having too much to quickly to properly  handle it

Yes...

I collected MLP madly between 1995 and 2000. Some really bad things happened then combined with my starting uni, and I kinda ended up out of the pony community and not collecting. I got into Jem at that time, so since then I've had two collections. MLP has been sort of in and out for me since 2000, especially since I began learning Japanese and focusing on my studies and stuff.

I am going to be trading and buying less now I'm back at uni although I wouldn't call this a hiatus necessarily this time. I guess my last hiatus was about 4 years, since it coincided with starting my MA. I think it's healthy to balance things and sometimes finances prevent collecting.

I think hiatus means a break from the community, though. Unless you sell your whole collection in hiatus periods, you still have that collection and still consider it a collection, so you aren't really not a pony collector in that time. You are just saving money a bit ;) If you stop visiting forums and discussing MLP, though, that's a hiatus. At least it is to me :)

Well, since I only collect what I really like, it's like I'm always on hiatus  :P

Yes, sometimes I take a break from ponies altogether because other things catch my interest (this time it was James Herbert books!) and I like to go with the flow. Also it's nice to leave something for a while and come back to it later, then when you 'rediscover' it, you appreciate it all the more. Case in point, I didn't bother with ponies for a good few months and just got back into the community a few weeks back with rekindled enthusiasm; it feels good! :D

I dont buy/sell/trade anywhere near as much as I used to but thats because my collection is at a point I am only looking for a handful of items or very hard to find things, rather than because I dont want to. As to taking a hiatus from the community not in recent years; I did for several years before joining the Arena but that was more just being too busy elsewhere to be part of an online community as I was still collecting. I guess I just love it too much around here.

I am on a pony hiatus now myself. I lost a lot of money when I went to university last year, so now I'm trying to recoup my losses. I hope to get back into collecting next year maybe.

I took a REALLY long haitus, like about 4 or 5 years from collecting when I got really into anime for a while. I rediscovered my love for ponies when I decided to dig out my pony collection again and display them.

I do go on hiatuses from time to time. It'll go a few months without buying much and even disappearing from the Arena, then get back into collecting hardcore again. I think we all need a break sometimes so we don't burn ourselves out. It's good to have more than one hobby to keep things fresh and interesting, so I balance my pony collecting with anime, video games, and reading. :)

Yes. Just when something else sparks my interest. Right now, it's only G2 I'm looking for. Haven't added anything else in months. But I've easily had longer periods of time without buying anything MLP

I started collecting when I was about 9 back in 2001
And I found the form and joined when I was 12 in 2004 during the G3 friendship ball line.

I collected up untill I was 14 and by the time I was 15 I dupmed it all for the sake of I was too old and I liked a boy.
I thought that would make me un cool like I was 4 years old and no one
Would speak to me so I replaced it with drawing and anime.
And I strugled to find something to collect it went from
Gothic purple and black interor stuff, to giraffes and kittys. Anime and manga.
Japanese things. Orca and ocean theme things.

I wasted to collect something adult and yet as exciteing as my little pony and all thoese other 80's toys. But I didn't want to be un cool.

Well turns out my friend/crush wasen't ment to be and was not that good of a friend or boyfriend to me. Neather was strik 2 and 3.
So I began to not give a crap about boys and begun my own
Intrests and thought if my brother can watch Mlp and buy them why the
Heck can't I?

And so it begun in 2012 I picked up collecting mlp and G1 at that and ever since then I haven't stopped. I have slowed way down but also I have gotten to the point that what I want is more expencive so I can't afford to get many but get what I really want.
I mean when I first started I had a $20 max rule per 1 pony. Now it's more like $50 max per 1 pony.

As far as looseing intrest I haven't I'll branch off to
Starwberry shortcake
Care bears
Rainbow brite
Popples
Christmas tree ornements
Painting
Drawing
Crafts

Or just doing nothing at all.
And it's helthy.
Inface is people didn't take a brake I would wonder if they where obsessed
Or something like people that c*** out at thair computer beacuse thair online chareture died or something. I have heard storied but not about mlp collectors.
But yes I do advise that people take a brake.

I have like a quadbillion hobbies...so I sort of cycle through them. Right now, I'd say I'm on a break from Pokemon collecting. Mainly because there's nothing for me to collect...so that one is a forced arrangement. I have a near complete collection of the one I collect most, so it's extremely rare that I come across an item I don't have.

I'm sort of on a pony break as well. I've actually been funneling all my extra money into my fish keeping hobby. I'm slowly coming back to ponies since there's some new things that I have my eyes on. Like the FS Coco Pommel. Getting my BaB Muffins and DJ Pon3 last week sort of flipped my "I need more ponies" switch back on.

Breaks are good sometimes. After not buying anything pony related for a couple months, getting those two plush really gave me a refreshing feeling that I don't get when I collect continuously.

All the time! I collect so many other things around different seasons. I collect Disney stuff on top of so many other things to where MLP I usually only buy when theres a sale going on! I usually buy the bulk of pony stuff at places like Ross but sometimes my hubby will buy something  pony for me

Yes- I break. It's about priorities for me I think... Lately I've been really craving "home time" with my pets, and so I haven't been on my regular rounds of thrift stores/fleamarkets/garage sales. I'd just rather be home.

Plus, I have BUCKETS of ponies from past hauls that still need to be cleaned and formally introduced to the herd, so it's not really fair to rescue more ponies at this time.

yeah I basically have all the G1 and G2's and G3s I want (except for my grail mountain boy). And G4.... well Hasbro makes it easy to go on hiatus... I'm only
interested in non mane 6.  :/

I'm taking a break currently, but still so used to checking the forums I can't stop.  Hah!

I have several different collections, and within a small home, I have to keep everything small.  I recently sold about half of my collection to a lovely who was happy to take the whole shabang and I kept what I couldn't let go of, which was around 50ponies.  They're all packed up now, and I got to say, I'm actually enjoying having that part of my collection decluttered.  I did let go of a few special ponies, like my Night Glider *gasp* but because when I come back to the collecting in a few, I'll have some fun ponies to chase down and maybe will get one in better condition.  Mine wasn't bad, but she wasn't real good either. . .!

But yeah, I did need the space, and I was just feeling too squished in my room.  I share an apartment, and it IS a larger apartment at 1100sq ft, but I still only have a bedroom for the fragiles and chewables because. . .cats. . . cats are jerks. . .  I've been really focusing on my antique doll collection which has really put me off on ponies besides.  I needed the pony space even in my closet for my restore stuff since I've been working more and more indepth and been learning new stuff with that, which has been really exciting.  And bonus points, I now have a spot in my room to put my plants when they come in for the winter.  Panhandle-Florida weather is still too cold for most succulents, and it was a total headache to bring them in last year, and I have MORE plants this year.

. . .I want a house so bad. . .  Ugh.

I definitely take a hiatus from time to time.

To be honest, as time has gone by I've shifted away from buying toys and am now more interested in looking at other people's customs and artwork and things like that.  I live in an apartment so I have limited space.

Yeah it happens to me every so often.  It recently happened to me with Monster High too.  I wasn't really into last season for FIM and started to lose interest but so far I've really enjoyed this season of FIM so I'm starting to become interested again.  Monster High I sort of got bored with but after the Boo York, Boo York movie I became interested again.

I take breaks from pony collecting rather often, since I have a limited budget for frivolity. I basically only splash out at the Fair, the rest of the time my collection is only augmented by the rare thrifting find, xmas/birthday gifts, and trades. I still try to keep tabs on new stuff coming out though, even if I can't buy it.

Unfortunately, I'll probably have to forego my annual MLP splurge next year too. My other true love, the Infinity arc of Sailor Moon, is gearing up to have a banner year with its musical recently concluding and a new anime season on the horizon. Oh, Death Busters merch... why so perfect and expensive?

I am on hiatus right now.  After the fair this year I just lost interest in actively collecting.  I still love my ponies and eventually I'll come back around but for now I am concentrating on other things.  I'm not sure if I'm even going to pony fair this year.  I've enjoyed it the last few years but if I'm not actively collecting I'll probably let it go by this year.  I do this every few years.  I need six months to a year to regroup and then I come back and go gang busters.  :)

I think we probably all do it. I have taken a few breaks ... since seriously collecting. I started collecting in about 2006 i stopped in 09 for about a year and a half, then stopped again on 2012 and have only just picked it up again.

We all have priorities that take over, be it life, or finances, or other hobbies and interests.

I haven't really been collecting the past few years, but I also haven't completely stopped either. I don't have room to display what I do have since moving back in with my mother (she drove me nuts so I ran off to China for a year), Plus I have a large pokemon/anime collection as well.  I still search ebay for ponies and every now and then I make a purchase. I have never left the forums though

I'm sort of in one and have been for the last couple of years.
Bunch of stuff really, but like a patch of being unemployed and being on jobseeker's didn't help, and just like not keeping up with mlp and feeling sort of thrown off now and like the lack of disposable income doesn't help and when I do have a bit it ends up going on other things. And as much as I still love mlp it's just exhausting to get back into it at the moment

So I'm like in a 'i like ponies, i lurk around but I'm not quite back in'

I'm sorta on hiatus.  I still like to get new Pinkie Pie's for my army when I see them, but that's about it.

Like others have said, I kinda float through collections/hobbies and come back around.  Ever since I've gotten into more armor-building oriented cosplay, most of my hobby money is going toward materials (like worbla) and I'm back on a Japanese Street Fashion thing.

I am thinking about spoiling myself with a handful of ponies after my birthday, though.
