I'm taking a long-overdue vacation in a few weeks, and my sweetie and I are going to Winnipeg! We don't have any concrete plans beyond seeing Star Warz at Celebration's Dinner Theatre, and trying some restaurants from You Gotta Eat Here, but neither of us really knows much about the city.
Anyone have any recommendations about cool stuff to see or do? My bf is of Metis decent, and I know he would love to check out some historical sites and museums. :)

Dunno but I can give this a bump.
-
I haven't been out of Ontario, trip wise before so I wouldn't know :(
-
:snicker: That's pretty much the response I get from everyone. I get some very strange looks when I say "vacation in Winnipeg". The main purpose of the whole trip is to surprise the daylights out of a couple of friends who aren't expecting me, and they're going to be in Winnipeg for a while. :devious:
No big deal, really. Some exploration will be fun!

The Zoo has some very nice polar bear exhibits!
I enjoy the ballet there, and unfortunately other than that I mostly go into Winnipeg to shop - the polo park mall has a lego store and a disney store! And a Lush.
-
I'm going to pop in here to add that the first thing I thought of when I saw "Winnipeg" was some kind of pony, like a unipeg. Okay, randomness over . . .
I hope you have fun on your trip :)

Ooooh polar bears! :D The Calgary Zoo hasn't had those for nearly 20 years!

Here's a city to giggle about...Calgary to Winnipeg is a really long drive, so we'll be stopping for the night in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. ;)

If you go to the indoor cafeteria, it has a HUGE window into one of the polar bear exhibits. Best view I had in the whole zoo.

Hey silverdragon54! I think Winnipeg is really nice in September, so you should enjoy your visit!
You'll definitely want to check out The Forks (http://www.theforks.com/) for general recreation, shopping and food. It's an historic site, and also the Human Rights Museum is there.
In terms of Métis history, you can visit Riel House (http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/mb/riel/index.aspx) historic site to learn more about Louis Riel and the Red River Settlement. You should also for sure visit the St. Boniface Cathedral (http://www.cathedralestboniface.ca/index.php?lang=en), and the cemetary there where Louis Riel's grave is.
Another important site for Métis history is the St. Norbert park (https://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/popular_parks/central/norbert.html).
It sounds like you're staying in the south end of the city, so you're close to the new Thermea spa (http://www.thermea.ca/). Oh and if you're in the south end for sure go to the Bridge Drive In (http://bridgedrivein.com/) for ice cream!
I also recommend the Exchange District (http://www.exchangedistrict.org/) for shopping, food and historic buildings! Be sure to visit Tara Davis Studio Boutique (http://www.taradavis.ca/) and Parlour Coffee (http://parlourcoffee.ca/).
Our art gallery (http://www.wag.ca) is very cool.
It sounds like you have a list of restaurants already but my top ones would be:
Kawaii Crepe
The Tallest Poppy
Stella's (many locations)
The Grove
For fancier dinners:
Prairie Ink (located in McNally Robinson Booksellers, a must-visit if you like bookstores!)
Deer + Almond
Smith
Anyway, let me know if you have any questions!

:tackleglomp: That sounds perfect! And Kawaii Crepe and The Tallest Poppy were at the top of our restaurant list. :)

Sorry this doesn't answer your question, but I feel it adds a little dimension to the discussion. Mainly if you like the Harry Potter musical. I know WINNIPEG literally because of this song, and I'm not even in the northern hemisphere.
Go to about 1 min in if you must, or just enjoy it in all its glory :)
