Title: How do you collect?
Post by: Haruna on August 26, 2015, 07:22:00 PM
I thought about asking this question through a poll, but there are so many varied ways to collect ponies that I figured individual responses would be easier. So how do you collect? Of course there's the question of which generation(s) you collect. But in addition, do you collect just the ponies you like, or every pony from a set? Do you collect accessories? Are you aiming towards a goal (like completing your U.S. pony collection) or are you not even actively buying right now? Do you have a pony room, or is pony collecting just one of your many hobbies?

I'd love to hear your stories. :)

The two generations I'm focusing on right now are G1 and G4.

I want my G1 collection to be representative of all of G1, but I know I can't get every pony.  So what I'm trying to do with my G1 collection is to get at least one pony from each set.  (US only, unless I get super rich.)  I've still got a long way to go, but it gives me guidelines so I don't go crazy buying ALL the ponies.  I've also got a small army of Baby Embers going.

My goal for G4 is this: to have every 3" Hasbro-made brushable that is of a pony that appears on the Friendship is Magic TV show.  So far this is going pretty well, aside from a few htf ponies (muffins, anyone?).  I'm about halfway there!

G3 I don't collect as much, but I really have a soft spot for all the baby plushes.

I collect g1 and g3.

G1-

I began collecting whatever ponies I liked which was most of them. Eventually I began collecting all of them.
I also collect MOC/MIB. I do not collect accessories, brushes, or playsets, unless it's something special like the soda for the Soda Sippin girls. I collect ponies that are already styled beautifully because I'm lazy and I'd rather pay more for a pretty pony than fix one up myself. I also collect merchandise. I have a crazy collection of g1 shirts and other clothing items. Everything they put out with the ponies on I want. I do not collect custom ponies at all and don't care for them at all unless they look perfect and could pass for factory made. I don't collect Nirvana unless it's especially pretty but I don't like most of them. I do however love Greeks.

G3- Collecting so far has just been collecting MIB or buying large lots of loose ponies. I also collect merchandise of this gen. For a while I spent a ton on nicely styled g3s from one certain seller I can't remember anymore.

G4 I pick up things I quite like, like those two large sitting ponies of Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, and also that giant Twilight Sparkle hard plastic light up/animated toy.

I'm new to the collecting scene, but I have quite a few G2s, G3s, and G4s. I just started seeking G1s, as I find a cute charm to the 80's originals. Specifically I am starting to collect the Twinkle Eye G1s, I like their bright wacky colors and gem eyes.
I have a soft spot for all Unicorn varieties, regardless of the generation ^^

I don't really have a method for the most part, I just buy whatever catches my eye. For stuff that's not in stores, I just wait until I see what I think is a good price and then go for it. I'm looking more at lots now since that way I can sell off extras to get an even better deal for what I wanted. However, getting the benefits takes a lot more work than just buying a few at a higher price. For stuff that's in-store, I save up and wait for a clearance sale and get a bunch of things at once.

I can't really say I have any goals for G1 and G3, just to get ones that I like. For G4, what I really want now are all of the early releases that I missed out on, like the non-mane 6 brushables and all of the Fashion Styles complete with outfits and accessories. I don't collect MIB either, so they'd have to be loose.

I don't think that will be as difficult as my other goal- I want all of the G4 Pinkie Pies. All of them.

Only missing one Colombian guy...and working on buying my grail Spanish masquerade/ whizzer :)

My collecting style is all over the place. It is also greatly dictated by my current funds :P. Since Hasbro hasn't been putting anything interesting out lately, (Or at least none in my area), I haven't been buying new ponies in ages. All my collecting recently has been second hand finds, primarily G3s, though rarely I have found the odd G1 or G4 I need.

I did go on a spending splurge a couple weeks ago and bought a bunch of G1s I needed from a lovely member here :). That said, I have to limit my online spending to a few times a year because it is sooo easy for me to fall into an endless buying spree.

So Soft as long as they are not grubby or baity.
I don't have many first years and not much of an intrest I collect late year mlp as that's what I perfer.
I like to have  ponies from the show.
I don't have to much merch as I perfered to spend it all on ponies.
Now I do own a little more books, bedding, cups, shirts, and other random G1 things.

So yeah I guess to sum it all up I guess I collect
mostly adults
Important main accessories
Food theme

Lol I had to actuelly look at my collection set up
to figure that out about
Myself.

I like having a little bit of everything from every generation, even if it's just a little. I also used to get almost any pony thing that caught my eye but I've decided I need to refocus how and what I want to collect. I was really into the G4 blind bags but I've sort of lost interest in them. I've decided to just stick to brushables and plushies. I'm also not fond of accessories or playsets.  As of late I've been really trying to focus on G4 and maybe even get some ponies I passed up on. That's going to be an expensive chore, though.

I collect G1, G3 and G4.
I don't really think I have a method.
For G1, everything I like. I love accessories too, and it is important that the pony is in mint or near mint condition.
I would like to own all my childhood G1s MIB or MOC one day, I still have around 15 or so to go.
For G3, I collect what I like, but I haven't added to my collection in a while.
G4 are easily accessible for me, so I buy them. My main interest however is in prototypes and styling size.

I just collect ponies that I like, although most of my current collection consists of replacements for childhood ponies (it's only a small collection, easier for me to look after!) I mostly look for G1s but I have a small bundle of G3s as well, a couple of which miraculously survived from my teenage years!

I've seemed to make "rules" for my pony collection ever since I started collecting them. Of course these get amended often but currently it's:
-G4 only.
-One of each character brushable and mini figure only.  (With a few exceptions for ones I just don't really want or can't currently decide which version I want most.)
-Only merch. I really, really love/will actually use.

I just started again, but before I kinda just bought stuff all over the place. I've now decided to only collect sets I want & build on my CP army. I like Italians, so I buy those when I can, regardless of them being a part of my CP army or a set I'm collecting.

I'm focusing right now on trying to finish my TEs (only missing Speedy!), and I just started the first set of adult sea ponies. oh, and for now, g1 only. Will pick up g2s again hopefully in the future when we have a bigger house. Those I collect by set, and the MOCs I can get my hands on.

I'm in love with G1 and G2 and will not buy anything else xD I can understand what others see in G3, but they're just not for me.
I usually go hunting for ponies out in the wild (mostly flea markets). I just love finding a neglected pony and giving her the time and love she needs and fixing her up. But ever since I got a paypal account, I find myself spending more and more on ponies from ebay
I'm currently not aiming to collect every G1 or G2 ever made. For G2, it's easy: I want the ones that have been with me during my childhood, preferably with their accessoiries. I just love the secret surprise ponies! Especially the first years of G2 were so creative with their little toys and accessoiries.
It's a lot harder to decide with G1. The only thing I now is that I'm not interested in Baby Ponies (except for Baby Ballerina Ponies), Flutterwing, Summerwing or Windywing Ponies and probably no Sister Sweethearts. I just never had them as a child and I prefer the traditional body types and poses.
The sets I definitely want to complete are the TAF Ponies, School-Time Ponies and TE Ponies. They're all so pretty ^_^
But I will take home any pony of G1 and G2 I found. Most flea market stands have decent prices, I love fixing ponies up and making them pretty again anyway, and maybe I can find them a loving home with another collector :)

I focus on G1. (I do have some G2 G3 and G4, but I don't really collect them I just own them).

I love all the G1's and I want to complete each set with their accessories. I focus on completing my favorite set's first though. And I only ad a pony to my collection if it looks fresh from the package. I don't want ponies that others have played with, I want them to be like how they would have been if I had been the first owner as a kid, original curls and everything.. :) And I don't like fixing up ponies unless it's a project that I'm going to sell.

And I love the hunt for perfect ponies! So I never use place holders that I upgrade. :)

I have ponies of each generation, but I do focus mostly on G1!

All of the ponies I have come from flea markets, secondhand shops or a local secondhand site. One time I drove for more than two hours to pick up a huge lot of more than 300 ponies and another time we went to pick up another huge lot with lots of stuff in their original box, including Paradise Estate. So in short, I would drive to pick up bigger lots if they are interesting, but most of my things come from flea markets and the like. :)

I do have the bad habit of picking up almost all of the G1 ones I find... I just LOVE to fix them up! It brings me so much joy to see how they looked before, and how they look when I'm done with them. But I probably really should stop picking them all up because I do am running out of space. Or maybe I should take the time to get rid of my doubles, because of some I really have too many. But I just can't help myself! If I see a pony laying there I just NEED to save him/her! :P

I collect all gens, pretty much whatever I find in a store (current G4, or older in a thrift store). And I buy some online exclusives. G4 I'm starting to get more selective on which releases.

Generally I don't buy much merch or plushies - just BABW plushies, and merch if I really like it and can use it (clothing).

I do have a pony room.

Only what I like, and I try to keep my pony hunt local... It's too easy to buy everything online.
However , stuff I obviously won't get locally (Nirvana's , mail orders)-- I'll buy online.

I'm a G1 and G4 collector.

G1s are, obviously, bought online. I'm not lucky enough to find anything but G3 in thrift stores, and I don't really want to collect more than the two gens I currently do. I will actively seek out new pony items in stores and I'll search online for anything I can't easily get here...being a member here helps, especially with those pesky international exclusives!

I also collect merch, which I enjoy more than the ponies themselves for G4. I also collect pony Funko figures and various plushies.

I have a pony room, so that's where the bulk of my collection goes. :) I definitely needed a room, since I also collect other things.  The other collections are sort of strewn about the house, haha.

For G1, I collect what I like and I'm not too fond of accessories, mostly just cause I don't know what to do with them. For G4, I'll buy almost anything, but there are certain things I'm more inclined to get than others.

I've been collecting for more than a month now, and I've been solely focused on G3s. So far, I've been trying to complete the sets before I try to get the ponies I really want.

As far as accessories go, I would like to collect all the pony charms and brushes, and if a pony comes with anything else like clothes it's more of a bonus than anything. I adore the G3 movies, picture books, coloring books etc, (mainly because I watched/read them a lot growing up) so that's something I want to collect as well.

I don't really have a steady goal in mind, just the idea of 'need more ponies' thus far.

Post by: Beldarna on August 27, 2015, 06:30:04 AM
My main focus is G1. When I began my goal was to get the ones I wanted but never got as a child. When that was done I focused on getting the ones from the cartoon, then it kind of went over to the ones I thought pretty.. I've completed a few sets, some were happenstance while others were so obviously belonging to something (sunshine ponies, Brush 'n Grow, 7 tale) that I needed them complete. Then someone was selling a bunch of Flutters on tradera and suddenly I got the idea of getting all the flutters (I'm one from completion) and now I am one pony from comleting year 2 Rainbow ponies so I thought I might get her just because..

On the side I've built small armies as well. Gusty, Moondancer, Bow Tie.. and I'm not really into varients and Nirvana it just kind of happened o.O

As it is now I'm not sure where to move from here. I need Wingsong ans Sunlight that is for sure. As I don't do eBay or paypal so it takes time to find the right ones and I am totally satisfied with that. I am considering the Rainbows from year 3 but I don't really feel like it.. But I hate to find the two I miss and then be done with it, so we'll see what happens.

When it comes to G3 I saw Kiwi Tart in the store and fell in love. Never thought I would like them but she was special. Then I fell for another and another.. But I don't really collect. The ones I've gotten these last years have been either rescued flee market finds or gifts from my boyfriens mother who buys them for me when she finds some and it's just so sweet I can't tell her to stop.

But in addition, do you collect just the ponies you like, or every pony from a set?
Yes I am a set completer I have to have all in the set or I wont collect them any other way. I am very through or try to be when it comes to G1s.

Do you collect accessories?
No not really I just collect ponies. I would like to have some but not all accessories.

Are you aiming towards a goal (like completing your U.S. pony collection) or are you not even actively buying right now? I am working on mail orders and other ponies I dont have. I like to say I am not actively buying but I seem to always be focusing on something or the other.

Do you have a pony room, or is pony collecting just one of your many hobbies? This is my main hobby but I do collect strawberry shortcake and the odd time hello kitty. Hobbies can get rather expensive.

I collect mainly G3s. Although I got my first G1 in a lot recently, and then discovered the different G1 lines, and now I might be in trouble.  >_<

Honestly, I don't have any goals. I started out "Oh, I love this one so much, this one really speaks to me!" and I thought I'd stop there, but then I found some more, because, lets be honest, G3 is such a gorgeous generation. So many beautiful ponies! ^_^

I have my limits, though, which aren't necessarily financial. As much as I adore MLPs, I don't see myself ever becoming a serious collector. I feel guilty with every one I buy, because I SHOULD be saving up my money up for something like school or paying my parents back for everything they've done for me.

Post by: Leave a Whisper on August 27, 2015, 08:01:41 AM
First, I've got a set amount of ponies I'm allowing myself to have, though my number has risen from 40 to 60, but it can't go beyond that! I truly do only have so much space for all my various collections. G1s, G3s and Fakies are what I collect.  I'm also trying to limit super rare/super expensive ponies in both gens as much as possible.

I also don't collect playsets, because of space limitations. Though I'd love to have Paradise Estate, the Show Stable and the Waterfall set.

I prefer at least decent conditions. I'm not fond of PVC Breakdown or heavy yellowing unless its on a color I can easily paint over. I don't want ponies who are missing manes, missing body chunks or who have mold. I'm okay with pen marks, missing tails, rust and regrind. If I can easily fix it with my very limited abilities, I'm okay with it.

G1s Current Number: 19
I'm re-collecting some of my childhood favorites, as well as ponies I've always wanted back then and never got. I'd like to have at least one from almost every species/gender. I just need to add Flutters, Unipegs and Wingers
The Merponies and SHS doesn't really do it for me. I'm not collecting country exclusives, because they're hard to find and I'm terrible at converting dollars to other currencies.

I don't care about accessories because they make the pony cost way more for me (personally) then I'm willing to pay, though I'd love to have at least one bushwooly and Wigwam's headdress. But as far as ribbons and bandanas go, I can buy spools of ribbons and bandanas for cheap and have plenty for my herd. Plus I don't like how often Hasbro used a complementary color and it blends into the body or hair. I usually prefer complementary colors that stand out. I can use baby clips shaped like bows for my two sea ponies.

G3s Current Number: 10
So many gorgeous ponies, but too many earth, I've got most of the Earth that I want and right now, I'm focusing on adding another Unicorn and another Pegasus and  a baity unicorn and Pegasus to head swap for a Unipeg custom I'd like to have done. Fortunately, the ones I want aren't hard to find at all.

Fakies Current Number: 3
I'm veeeery picky about my fakies and unfortunately most of the ones around here are the creepy, glass, doll- eyed variety. I'd love to have a few Remco and a Unipeg Demon Donkey and a Princess RnP would be awesome! As well as more babies and maybe a few flockies. I count fakies as part of my MLP herd, BUT I don't count them as MLPs, so I can get away with getting a few more, if I'm fortunate enough to find the ones I like.

I collect G1 and G4 mainly.  When G3's were out, I bought many of them, but I don't buy too many these days, except at goodwill or thrift stores.  My g1's are my favorite, and I tend to focus on them, but when I see G4's at the store, I can't help but pick them up.  In terms of how I choose what I buy, I buy the G1's that I like.  I don't necessarily try to complete sets, but I do have quite a few complete sets.  For G4's, I try to buy just the ones I like, but I also tend to buy ones that might be more rare or sought after.  I think of some g4's as investments as well as toys for me.  (at least that is something I say to people when they see a cart full of ponies :)

I collect G1. I had my childhood collection, but I've expanded it quite a lot!! I'm going for ones that I wished I'd had as a kid, but on the way I've discovered other lovely ones, so the list keeps getting bigger! I only have limited room though, so I can't really collect playsets and accessories. Although I'm very tempted to!!!

I started out by collecting only the ones I wanted as a child, adding to my original childhood herd, but then it grew and then G3 came out... now I collect all 4 gens.  I love making lists and ticking them off so I collect all types of ponies and playsets and accessories.  All other collections have long gone to make way for more ponies.

G1 criteria: loose and in minty condition where possible, complete with accessories or I will spend ages hunting down any missing parts ;)  I collect backcards and playset boxes but try not to buy MIB as I will only open them and feel guilty about it!  I collect all USA and UK including variants.  I also collect Nirvanas - rainbows, Blossom variants, collector pose variants or just any that I think are pretty.  I collect vintage merch, comics, softies, porcelains, petites and mummy charms.  I have one Dream Beauty but no doubt she will gain a companion at some point.  I am only missing 3 USA, 4 UK/Euro and 14 MO to have a complete set of brushable G1 ponies.

G2 criteria: MOC/MIB and I don't open these! I do have a few loose, some are hard to find so will be super difficult to get MOC.  Still got 47 MOC and 1 beanie to get to complete my G2 collection.

G3 criteria: All were purchased new and most are now loose, but I have kept all of the packaging (yes my attic is full of boxes!) - some special ones I even have doubles so I can open one and keep one mint.  I have every variation of G3 ponies, except the giant blank pony and open-mouthed Ribbon & Hearts, but not every packaging/accessories variation.  I have a huge army of Pinkie Pie to show all the variations of packaging and merch.  I have approx. half the G3.5s but I'm only adding to them if they are super cheap!

G4  As G3!  Just trying to keep up with the new ones, but I do collect brushables, prototypes, blind bags, plushies, EG and Funko (regular and blind box) so it feels as if I will never complete G4!

My main pursuit is G1 but I have really grown to like G3 lately. So for G1, I look around and pick out specific ponies when I'm buying online. Right now I mainly just buy ponies I like but I hope to be able to complete some sets eventually. When it comes to G3, I stick to whatever I stumble on in the "wild" at thrift stores or wherever.

I originally made a head canon and listed ponies in groups according to priority..I have very few new ponies I would get now (as in, new to me) but I'm always looking for upgrades and ponies for projects. Right now I'm.looking for magic message ponies with ruined symbols. I collect mainly g1 and g3.

I collect all generations except G3.5. I primarily focus on G1 and those are always a priority when I get some spending money. However, I am more of an impulse buyer. When I have a paycheck where I can splurge a bit on eBay, I'll buy whatever pony catches my eye. The last big spending spree I went on at the Arena included G2's.....my first lot of them I bought in two years. You never know what I'll end up getting.

Since I'm in a swap right now and I put all the G1's and G2's I need on my wishlist, I am only going to focus on G4's until later this fall. I still need to find FS Daring Do and some of the other newer ones.

I really wanted to reach 1,000 ponies this year. I have 23 more ponies to reach that goal. Sadly, I don't think this is going to happen. :(

I collect all generations, mostly. I generally pick up whatever is in antique shops, charity shops and carboot sales because they're cheap and I love cleaning up ratty ponies! Well, I try to anyway. I usually buy ponies I like the look of, because I don't want to spend money on a pony I don't like the look of. I'd rather get my favourites THEN go around completing sets.

With G1, I pick up whatever I find. I usually buy in lots, so that I can get lots of ponies at once, as shipping can be expensive. If I really like a pony, I will buy it by itself.

With G2, I don't go out of my way to pick them up. If I find one in person, I'll buy it, but aside from that I generally leave them be. I'm not too fussed over them to collect them all.

I have too many G3's at the moment, so I'm not buying those online either! I'm trying not to pick every single one up that I find 'in the wild', but they're too cute, heh.

G4's I only really pick up Rainbow Dashes for my army, or new ponies. I don't bother picking up every single mane six release. It's boring.

What a great topic! It is fascinating to read everyone's different tastes and methods! I collect G1 and at first was going to try and replace my childhood collection but have decided to collect only my favourite sets. So far I have collected all of the Summer Wings, both sets of Princesses and the Bushwoolies. I am also collecting the Brush N Grow Princesses and the Rainbow Curl Ponies and possibly the Windy Wings! All my ponies are in mint or near minto condition and I plan to get each of my princesses a wand! I also collect the Mommy Charms and I am aiming to collect a full set in mint condition. These are have been hard to find but I only have four to go and a few upgrades.  I am also casually collecting the Petite Ponies but am far more relaxed about it than the charms!

I collect G1. I have some of the other generations, but I don't collect them. I buy and keep what I like and not the rest. I am a G1 kid and they're different to me in that regard.

I collect all ponies from the normative lines in G1. I only collect what Nirvana I like. Whilst I was very involved right back at the beginning with Italian, Macau and such ponies, I think the prices have got out of hand. I have one or two from most Nirvana lines. I like Brazilian ponies, if and when I can afford them - I currently have Wind Whistler, Paradise, Dancing Butterflies, Up Up & Away, Baby Lofty and Peachy, but am not actively pursuing any others.

My passion is UK stuff - UK packaging, UK instructions, UK inserts, UK comics...not so much merchandise but bits and pieces that tell the story of the UK line. I collect mint in box ponies but only certain ones in North American packaging, usually ONLY those ponies not sold in the UK as I don't want them with the wrong art style or name from what I remember. I think I currently have about 85 mint in package ponies ranging from 1983 to 1994.

I collect all loose ponies from the normal and mail order lines across Europe and in North America. I also collect Dream Beauties and have a full set of those but I don't have a full set of Petites and don't focus on them. I have about half the sets loose or MIP and most of the playsets from childhood, but haven't bothered to really focus on those; just kept whatever I've acquired along the way. All my Petite stuff is in the attic except for one who lives under the sink. She came to live with me with Brazilian Paradise and kept her company on her trip from France :) so she has been allowed to stay down.

I am currently working on specific mint in package items, accessories and backcards. I have around 130 G1 pony backcards/boxes, maybe more, most of which are from the United Kingdom release (though some are from North America and for some ponies I have both the card from here and from overseas).

My aim is to have every pony released in the UK with their original backcard as sold here, or mint on card, but at the very least to have one example from the set in terms of style and as many of my childhood ponies MIP that I can manage.

I have all of the playsets except Megan's Place and the lavender castle (neither of which I'm really fussed about because they were not sold here. I also collect playset boxes from the UK.

I keep any loose pony that has a minor variation to a pony I have. The most recent addition to that collection was my second Mail Order Star Hopper who is distinctly darker than the one I had from years ago.

My most recent loose pony acquisitions were Petrol Poppy (aka Birthflower Poppy, who now no longer smells of petrol, thank goodness) and Tropical Breeze with her UK box, ribbon and comb.

Currently awaiting in the mail (Wretched Global Shipping), Sparkle Pony Twinkler (MO). When she arrives I will only be missing Baby Sugarcake and Scandinavian Cupcake to have a complete set of loose ponies sold in the normative lines in North America, Europe and the UK. Some of the later released ponies - Splish, Splash, Splosh, Liquorice, Candy, Lollipop etc - I have with original card and hairclip/float from new, though most of my early childhood ponies no longer have their cards :(.

My most htf pony is Baby Susie in Blossom's pose, as she is the only known one in existence.

My most special ponies are...the 68 I had as a child ;) beginning with Rainbow Pony Windy in 1984.

Not all my ponies are mint because many were from childhood or acquired from carboot sales in a time when condition was less important to me than having a pony. Many of these have since been upgraded, so I have several doubles. I only upgrade a pony who really desperately needs it and then only with the utmost in perfection that I can find. I hate faded pink hair and hair cuts, but can live with minor marks and names on the hooves.

I started collecting in 1984 with Windy, I stopped for a while between 1994 and 1995, then went back to it by carbooting. I've been online since 1997 and online from home since 1998, after having met the first of many awesome trade partners, who brought a box of around 98 ponies for us for a mega-trade when she came to visit her family from the States. That trade partner is no longer with us (she passed away a couple of years ago) but she is still very dear in my heart and all the ponies that came from her have a special memory, in particular my Baby Shady, who she sent to me for my sixteenth birthday in February 1998.

My first ever online trade was Mimic (for Gypsy) and Best Wishes (I forget who for), and my first ever ebay buy purchase was Sea Breeze (no shell) for $5 plus $4 shipping :)

I think that about covers it!

I collect G1, G3, and G4.  I tend to concentrate on what ever is in stores at the time, so right now G4.  However, I do love finding ponies in the wild and will generally buy ponies of any gen if the price is right.  It's a treasure hunt and I love the idea of stumbling across ponies I don't have or of something really rare.   I buy what ever catches my fancy.

I collect G1 and MOC G2, and mostly I buys whatever I likes.  For a while it was princess accessories.  Then it was sea pony floaties and then brushes and combs.  Always nirvanas though.

G1- My favorites, whatever I come across! I have some favorite series I want to complete. medium-priority
G2- whatever I come across for cheap, low-priority
G3- all of it, high priority. anything I dont have, every pose, MIB, mint condition. Accessories are a lower priority because I don't display them unless the pony can wear them.
G4- I only have two build a bear plushies, both were gifts. no priority.

I like to collect G1, G3 and G4 ponies. I was never into the G2 and G3.5 ones.

I collect the G1 ponies when I see a good deal on them. Or if there is one that I have to have. I don't buy them as much due to the price being higher on them.

I love to collect NIB G3 ponies. I have a few loose ones that did not come in a small box. If they came with a building I would buy the pony loose. I am not into collecting buildings.

As for G4 ponies, I like to collect and keep them all NIB. I only collect the ponies that are brushable.

I don't to crazy when it comes to my collection. I like to keep it simple.

Wrote down a list of what I missing G1 wise from my collection, and focused on that.  Then did a list of what I missing for international ponies, focused on that.  That was about 15 years ago.  From there, I buy what catches my eye.  Things that are cool i.e. sewing machines, purses, accessories.  I should start focusing on upgrading, but I've not been buying for a few years now.

G2's - only MOC or MIB, with the main focus being on the twins.  Specifically Click and Nosey.

G3's & G4's - whatever I find second hand. I'm not going outta my way to buy them.  Unless they are the giant plushes from Australia.

Second hand shopping - I'll buy what I see.
Ebay - I buy what I know I'll never find second hand.

I collect G1 ponies that I like and sometimes I complete sets only if I like all the ponies in the set. I don't collect accessories or MOC(although I wouldn't pass one up in the wild for a good price). I have half of my pony collection on the living room and half in the bedroom. The collection in the living room outgrew their shelves in the living room and I couldn't fit another bookcase/DVD case in the living room, so the overflow is in the bedroom. All my other 80's toys are in the living room.

Everyone has such a unique take on collecting! As for me, I collect G1 actively, and I usually buy ponies in lots and sell the ones that I already have or don't want in order to get a good deal on them. I buy most of my ponies online; I don't seem to find ponies locally all that often, although it's not impossible. My rule of thumb: Buy ponies I like. I don't want to complete sets, thankfully, as this is good for my wallet! I'm usually just into U.S. and European releases, which is also good for my wallet; I don't collect Greek, Mexican, Brazilian ponies, etc. I guess the one exception would be Brazilian Baby Lofty, who I've wanted for a while. If I ever get her, maybe she'll suck me into the Nirvana world. :P

I like certain accessories, like bandanas and sea pony floats and Pocket Pals. I don't have a pony room, so my ponies and my sister's ponies are haphazardly everywhere -- in our room, there's an awkward shelf/basket for my favorites, hers are in her dollhouse (poor dolls) or on her DVD shelf, others are in containers under the bed or the closet (G3s and G2s are currently in the closet, except for my favorites), and some ponies are on the shelf with my Breyers, on the bookshelf, or on the nightstand and such in the guest room. I think I need a better display solution!

How do I collect?

Well, right now the generations I'm focusing on are G1 and G4. My collecting habits have changed over time, but right now the way I go about collecting Ponies -- as well as other toys I collect like Transformers and Littlest Pet Shop -- all boils down to how much I like the way they look and how badly do I want them in my possession. If I don't like the way they look and/or don't feel the strong desire to have them, then I pass on them and find the ones that really strike my fancy. In other words, I've become quite a picky collector. xD
