I often see G1 Ponies in the thrift stores where I live. But they are typically in very bad condition, missing mane and tail, with pen marks and so on. Typically the price is equivalent to $1 Would you buy those? Right now they have one of the sitting G1s (dont remember which) and I have left her at the shelf down there for months without buying her.
-
I absolutely buy all G1s I can find. I hate to leave them there, I'd rather make sure they go to a good home, whether it's with me or with another collector.
-
I never see G1 ponies in real life - in thrift stores or flea markets so I don't really know if I would buy them or not... The collector in me would say YES!, but the practical part of me would say NO... It would have taken time to either clean or sell (or both) and I honestly don't know if I would have prioritized it. But it depends though - I'm a softy... so probably the "poor little pony is all alone in a thrift store" part of me would have won in the end ;)
-
Mangoto i will give you the money!!! Go save the sitting pony.... X
-
Generally speaking, I will pick up any g1 for a dollar. But I admit that I did leave behind a really manky so soft Sundance and another pony one time. But in that case, the seller was asking for $2-3 a piece and I did wipe her out of most of her ponies.
In your case, the sitting ponies are a little more sought after and if it isn't Bubbles or Seashell then she could be *really* sought after so I would go ahead and get her if I where you.
-
I always buy every g1 i find, even if they look bad.. cant just leave them :P
Either I keep them for my own collection or sell them, I love spending time on cleaning them and fix them up :)
-
I just love the response in here. Ok, I will rescue her first thing monday morning :-)
-
The only time I found G1 in the wild was at an antique store, priced about $10 each in pretty decent condition...I didn't buy them all, that was a bit too high, so I just selected a few. If I found one at thrift, I'd probably buy regardless of condition.
-
No I guess not. The last "wild" G1s I saw were at a swap meet. I was thrilled to see them, but they were in the collectors pose and that's not a pose I'd wanna collect. I'd get them if they were in alt poses though. Bowtie Snuzzle would be so pretty, or a Lemon Drop in the Posey pose. I think if I saw them in the wild again, it would depend on who they are, whether they are on my wish list and if I can live with their flaws.
Examples: I see a Windy missing her tail, she has marks/yellowing on her body, she is high on my wish-list. I can live with that by painting her white again and ordering hair for a new tail. I would be glad to take her.
I see Tootsie with marks, symbol loss and a missing mane and tail. I could fix the tail, but don't feel comfortable trying to fix the mane. I'm not good enough to match paint to that shade of green and I can't draw for squat. She's not on my wishlist, so I leave her.
-
Usually I do. But this one time I left a scary rusted bbe baby lofty at goodwill. She was in a toy bag and I wasn't going to pay $3 for her in that condition.
-
I've left a few behind when their price didn't match their looks. I particurlarly remember one young woman wanting 50 sek (4-5 usd) for a rusty tailed, dirty and yellowed Pony Bride. I offered her half of that thinking I was generous, but instead she told me she could get several hundreds for her online..
But if I feel the price is right I do buy them. I've even saved a few G2s.
-
For the most part yes. There's a seller at the flea market here that has a ton, but they're asking $10-40 for them because "they're old and they don't make them anymore." Oh, and they're absolutely convinced that I'm one of the other users here, and keep asking me about a wrestling custom pony. Anyway, THOSE I don't pick up, but for the most part I have a "no pony left behind" attitude!
-
If I feel that they are beyond my repair then I will usually leave them behind. I saw a moldy Medley and a So Soft for $8 at a flea market a few times and passed them up. Now I am trying to get a deflocked So Soft collection going and I went back to the flea market and they were gone :( I was really kicking myself.
For the most part mold, bad age spots and a lot of marks keeps me from buying. I found a Fancy Pants pony a flea market a few years ago and she was missing a lot of hair plugs and scuffed symbol. Currently I am working on her making my first custom.
-
I left like 10 at a flea market once, because I was all out of money from buying g3s >_> I've been hard-pressed to find one or two at a time in the wild since.
-
Definitely for $1! And since you're in Denmark, there's a chance it could be a Nirvana or European exclusive.
-
Usually, yes, if the price is decent. I don't find g1s all that often and I have to assume that, even if I don't intend to keep them, someone else will want them. :)
-
I would if I actually found any that is. I rarely go thrift hunting anymore and when I do, I never see any g1 ponies or ponies, period. If I came upon some g1's that were decently priced based on their condition, I would buy them all and re home them since I have them all now.
-
I'll pick them up if the price matches the condition. Frequently I've had to leave them behind because they are over priced, but I will try to negotiate the price down if I can. I hurts to leave them behind though. If I can, I try to sell them on into the community.

-
I'm not a G1 collector myself, but if I find them for a price I can afford and am pretty sure I can get back by reselling them, I definitely have a "buy all of them / buy all I can afford" policy.
That policy applies to any and all ponies, though. XD Even the G3.5s.
-
I save them because I'm a customizer so I know that even if they're not in good condition I can usually fix them up. I just found a G1 Glory with no tail this week for fifty cents so she's sitting here, waiting for a bath and for me to decide how I want to fix her up. I'm thinking of playing with an alternate hairing...
-
I have never found a G1 in a thrift store, but I think I'd probably buy any one that I did find (provided the price wasn't ridiculous).
I have found G1s twice in the wild, and both times I had to leave some behind. Once was when I was at Breyerfest and I wanted to make sure I saved money for Breyers since that was why I was there, so I only bought Up Up and Away and G2 Bright Berry since they were both on my want list. Another time was really recently. I was at a comic con and a vintage toy dealer was there with a big bucket of G1s, G3s, and fakies. They were in really lousy condition for the most part, and seriously, seriously over priced. Still, I couldn't leave without one since it was only the second time I had seen G1s in the wild! I wound up paying $10 for a Peachy in not-so-great condition (ink spots, etc.) >_< I'm justifying it by figuring that I didn't need to pay shipping for her and just that week I had been commenting on how strange it was that I didn't have a Peachy in my collection. I don't regret buying her at all, but I do wish I had tried bargaining with the guy selling her!
-
Definitely. Sometimes even if they're stupidly priced just to have that I found a g1 (and bought it) experience.
-
I have had to avoid some with higher prices. :/ I do try to buy the G1s I do find though.
-
Most definitely! Between everyone selling them on Ebay and MLP getting the pop culture spot light in recent years ponies are becoming harder to come by at things like thrift stores and yard sales, G1's especially so! I try not to pass them up.
-
I do. I can't bring myself to leave them behind (although that's probably because they're harder to find for me lol!)
-
The rule is buy all G1's. Unless they're baits and are more than $1 each, in which case buy just the rarest available and when they're still there a few weeks later, ask the vendor if they'll take $x for the rest of them.
-
I'm kind of a *Don't leave Anypony behind* even G2/G3 and G4 and all of their accessories I find out in the *Wild*, but only if it fits in my budget!
-
I saw a G1 likely split at a kids market a few weeks ago. She was in OK condition but I'm kind of thinning the herd so I left her behind. I haven't seen a G1 in tge wild for at least a year or more.
-
I used to at the carboot sale, when I had a plentiful availability of them. Now I don't often see them. I left a £7 Bow Tie at the toy fair, because that was overpriced and I couldn't have rehomed her without taking a loss.
To begin with, sister and I had so many gaps we just bought everything. Then we only bought the ones we needed, then we discovered THE INTERNET.
And after that, we bought most everything. Certainly everything UK related, because we needed ponies from other places and the best way to get them was to trade.
Ultimately, I'd pick and choose a bit more once I knew the market and what would or wouldn't trade. I tended to leave behind the CJ, Lickety etc ponies unless they were really mint condition or came with some accessory or sticker or something that I needed.
I bought any still in their original box, of which I surprisingly found quite a few at one point.
Now, I would be happy to see G1 second hand somewhere even if I didn't buy them. I would buy something that was reasonable for the price of what it was, but gone are the days of the 50p Mountain Boys and the "bag of ponies for £2" that included sweetie babies with clips and such like...
(Sigh, I'm getting old xD)
It's still my dim, distant hope that one day some toy fair seller will have a bunch of MOC Mountain Boys for a steal. I paid £40 per sea pony baby moc at the last toy fair. I'd pay that again easily if they came up with Sunburst the next time round ;) (But I think I'm thinking a little too wishfully...)
-
Yes I must SAVE Them!
-
Yes, always. I hardly ever find ponies in the wild, so when I do find them I definitely don't leave them behind!
-
No. Shortly after I first started collecting ponies in 2011 with G4, I saw some G1s at a thrift store and picked them up at about $2-3 each. I took them home and cleaned them up and realized I didn't want to collect G1. I ended up selling them at a slight loss (they were common ponies and had some condition issues). So, unless I see something like MOC or that I recognize as a sought after pony I'd leave it now. It's not worth the trouble of cleaning and shipping and maybe breaking even to get them only to pass on. It'd be different if I collected G1 myself I'm sure. Though if they were in pretty bad condition I might leave them anyway.
-
No. I used to buy pretty much all of the G1s I found and clean them up and try to sell them for cheap to get them circulating in the community. Unless the pony is rare, super popular or nirvana, it's not really worth it to buy them. I've had a pile of clean, unwanted G1s in my house for years. They just don't sell, not even at $1-3.
-
There aren't many G1 collectors around here, so yes, most of the time. Unless it's super common in good condition, then I leave it for someone else's pony hunt!
-
I was originally going to say that I only left one behind once, and that it was a tailless Parasol in an $8 bag full of non-MLP items, but looking back, I realize there are several occasions where I've passed on a G1, usually when I've seen them for sale in a couple of vintage/antique stores.
In those cases, I either already owned one or more of the ponies, they weren't on my wishlist or they didn't really "jump out" at me, but to be honest, in some cases I didn't feel comfortable with the idea of buying up all the G1 ponies in sight, even if I could afford to and had the space for them in my apartment. I just feel like leaving a few behind, just in case someone else who secretly still loves ponies finds them and decides to get them for themselves...and in a lot of cases, they disappeared from their stores in less than a week or two. ^.^
-
YES! I don't have many G1s go start off *hides 15 or so G1s* so I mainly pick them up! The only pony I passed up was a moldy, rusty, hair cut, missing tail and plugs, rubbed symbol, grubby Starshine.
My best bargain was when I got Little Flitter, Tex with his hat, MINT Gingerbread AND Nice condition Princess Tiffany for 5 dollars :dropjaw: :faint:

I've actually started taking ponies BACK to the community around here, if I know it's one that isn't going to sell online easily. If we go carboot selling, I try to keep the ponies back until the dealers have done their rounds. You can tell a dealer from a collector by the fact they buy Peachy, and they ask you if you have all the rare ponies, because they're in it for the money.
I really want to take ponies back because we took so many out of the area, and in case there are kids or local collectors who aren't online or can't buy them online. I only ever have a few, but they always sell. The last carboot we did, I had some really battered buildings that we gave away, but to this one family I sold a Grooming Parlour and Peachy, Sundance, Lickety Split, Sprinkles, a bunch of G3 stuff and there was so much excitement about it that I felt really glad I'd taken them with me.
Maybe I'm a bit mad, but my sister and I stripped this area of ponies for six or seven years. It's the least we can do to put some back into the market, so if I get common ponies in lots, that's where they now go. I think there are five or six ponies in my box at the moment destined for the same trip, if and when the weather is good enough.
I'd love to have some common US ponies to take, because I had a spasm myself when I found Glory and Moondancer at a carboot sale here, where they had no right being, but import costs are now prohibitive.

Thats cool of you to, well, release ponies back into the wild, so to speak :D

I love it when you get to sell to someone who you know will really appreciate the ponies. ^.^ It's a very good feeling!
I usually buy every G1 I see (which isn't often), but I can think of a few instances when I didn't; once was when I left a Moondancer and Parasol in an antique store because they were both about $10 and I had them already, and the other time was when I saw a Skydancer (or Firefly or someone in that pose) who had been sloppily painted red and given horns and black hair. I felt so mad when the guy selling it described it as a "pony of the apocalypse" or something. :pout: I badly wanted to rescue the poor thing so that someone could properly customize it, but $5 was too steep for me. Maybe I should have saved her, though :/
-
I already posted on this tread....but that is what I also do indeed if I'm on a flea market or something like that! If the price is right, I ask the seller *Do you have more of these horsies/things* I never call them ponies ;-) and sometimes they say *Yes, look*....and pull a box of them from somewhere. Mainly fakies, or super commons, or in not THE best state. But mostly if I ask how much for all and the price is right I take them all. I just could not leave them there....ending up bought by parents who don't give a sh*t and gave them to their snotty children *sorry I'm not a children person* who torture them, with markers and scissors! And then say...*Oh well they only came from the flea market so I just trow them away!*
That's why I save as many as I could, just to bring them back into the community! ^.^
-
I did when I first started collecting, I haven't actively collected for a while but now I tend to be a lot more discerning, like provided they can be cleaned up fairly easily I'm likely to grab them. It's also pricing, as I made mistakes like paying 2.50 for really grotty common ponies from someone at my local bootfair that was an antique dealer type person so generally if it's too expensive and I know it's a common pony I'll pass.
-
I buy all gen1 I find, usually, unless they're really outrageously priced, like E10 for a Peachy or so. I usually leave gen2-4 behind, unless they're rare ponies, but I can't help but save all gen1 I run into! I think that's why I have 4 Cherries Jubilees now... :p
-
Yes! I come from a small town, so finding ponies doesn't happen often. {Saying that, recently I've had an influx of ponies from a local charity shop.} I don't generally get G1's, and if they're doubles I still get them to pass on to my sister. Luckily for me, most of the ponies I've found have been in nice shape or cleaned up well, so I don't feel too bad about spending on them.
-
I wonder if someday we'll be saying "I buy all ponies every time I see them!" since G2-G4 will someday be much harder to find in thrift shops, etc. (not to mention G1!)
-
Defiantly! I can't leave any ponies behind lol
-
I do because for one thing I refuse to pay eBay's prices.
-
No. I like to leave that joy for others if its a pony I don't want. I've seen some one make a brag thread on a baby pony I didn't pick up (they stated the thrift store I saw her at). They were sooo happy. I know I did the right thing not getting her :p
Besides, I don't have the time to clean and/or resell.
-
Absolutely! Unless they are silly pricing...i.e. £10 for Cotton Candy :P So I guess I am in the "yes I would like to but I am not wasting money" camp!
-
Ok, so I went and got them. And because of all your stories, I also saved the last little fakie in the basket, so that it would not be there all by itself...
-
Yes! I'll pass up G3s if there's a bunch in a bag and I already have them, but never G1s.
-
Last week I found a Bridal Beauty, white Tootsie and Posey for 30 SEK ($3.50) each. They were not nice or rare enough to restore, but not shabby enough to bait. I ended up taking Posey home with me, but I think it is the first time I left ponies behind.
-
I found most of mine on flee market, :) yes If they cost 1$ or 5-10 dkk I would buy them ^^ Also lives in denmark found many to no money.
-
Aadra and I found 5 G1's at a sale last night, and we wouldn't normally leave G1's behind but these were terribly overpriced for commons. I ended up with a birthflower and a Cotton Candy upgrade.
-
I buy them if they are realistically priced...even raggy dirty ponies at 50 cents come home with me but raggy dirty ponies with price tags over $5... nah...
-
If I find a G1 at a flea market or yard sale and she's cheap (I mean $3 or less) and in good condition, I'll definitely grab her. But many people now know they are worth money and will jack up the prices. I miss being able to find them for a dollar.
-
If I see them, I buy them for sure :P
-
I used to buy every G1 I found, but I've become a bit more picky lately about pricing; if it's a G1 for $1 or less, I buy it no matter condition. If it's $2-5, it depends...but there have been a few times when I've bought *slightly* overpriced ponies in the hope that the seller will bring more to an antique store; a Medley for $3 with faded symbols, a BBE for $4, things like that. It's worked at least once, haha!
-
I always buy G1s. No matter their condition. I enjoy cleaning them up and even the ones I can't, will always have a home with me. :) I have a Baby Tiddlywinks with a mowhawk and a chunk out of her hoof and a Baby Surfy who's nose was almost bitten off.
I think the only pony I left behind was a very discolored Baby Cuddles. She was in a bag of fakies for like $7 and I really couldn't afford it at the time. :(
-
nope i will leave them if i dont think i can clean them, not if they are only missing a tail i will deff pick them up
-
Since I pretty much like all gens, I buy each pony that I come across on flea markets and second hand stores. Usually they're worth the price that's being asked. I might leave a pony that is too damaged (especially if the seller wants a ridiculous price for it) unless she's in a batch with some other ponies I want. Don't mind buying doubles either.
Only time I had to be picky was at the last convention I went to. Seller brought 2 boxes filled with G1's for 5$ a piece. Couldn't buy them all and some of them really weren't worth the money, so I only got about 10 of them. But since they were selling them to other collectors, I knew the ones I left would go to others who wanted them more than me :)
-
I never see any anywhere I go, whether it's estate sales or thrift shops. If they were in decent condition I'd buy them.
-
Yes! As long as they are under $5 and not too terribly bait. Unless it's a very hard to find pony that is bait.
-
I never find G1s in the wild. But if I do, I will definitely snatch them up if they're not overpriced! I will be so excited that I actually found some at a rummage sale or at a flea market! So far, I have only found G3s!
-
If it's like the 50¢ Up Up and Away I managed at an Estate sale or another really good deal, yesssssss. My collection is pretty exclusive but I don't mind adding a new pony if they're one I like and have the ability to see in person.
