Title: Trying to Resist: Disney Descendants XD
Post by: kCherry on August 12, 2015, 10:00:29 AM
The Descendants are popping up in my local stores and I keep finding myself picking them up even though I told myself that I would NOT start another line right now!! Daughter of Mulan especially keeps tempting me. I'm not terribly keen on the fashions, though. I think this is part of what's keeping me from actually putting them into my shopping cart.

This coupled with the fact that I am a sucker for MIB dolls and the packaging on these dolls is plain stupid. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to make the boxes wider at the top than the bottom was a goob. :silly: Trying to look through them at the store is maddening!!! :yikes:

But, I know me, I'll have to get my hands on one to customize sooner or later. :P Might wait until they start showing up secondhand in my local thrifts or try to trade for one.. :)

Anyone have one of these dollies yet? I'd love to hear what people think of them outside the box.

I think they're gorgeous.  But even so, I think I can wait a few months when the prices drop.

They haven't shown up here yet, but I'm glad to hear that the packaging is dumb...that might keep me from buying one, lol!

Yeah I saw some of the coronation dolls today and Sleeping Beauty's daughter jumped out at me.  I am a big SB collector and she may need to join my collection, not like I need another collection.

The dolls seem much better than the movie (show?). I really like their faces. I wish EAH dolls had that much personality.

Wow I just realized that HASBRO makes both of these doll lines!!!

I don't know much about (non pony) dolls, but GOSH,  Descendants look A ZILLION times better!  Wrist joints!  beautiful face shapes!   EGs look like Mcdonalds toys in comparison!

What's up Hasbro?  are third-party licenses more important that your own stuff?

Disney probably has higher standards of quality control.  If they don't like it, they'll tell Hasbro to fix it.  While EQG, Hasbro's like "Eh, good enough" :P

The "Descendants" were clearly designed to compete directly (and in fact to take the market) from Mattel's Ever After High doll line-

The boys don't have jointed wrists though >=( OR well the other boy doesn't (forgetting his name right now) I got him to be made into Danny and come to find out his ankles are jointed but not his wrists D=

and they really look like they could compete!
The Equestria Girls line isn't in even in the same game... IMO.  Ah well, I want ponies anyway so I should probably just keep quiet. XD

Title: Re: Equestria Girls Vs Disney Descendants

I feel this is an unfair comparison. Tbh there are some Equestria Girls dolls that are as nice. The Rockin Hair and Deluxe Friendship Games dolls for example. When there is not a single Descendants doll with a MSRP below $19.99 and there are EG dolls that are only $14.99 (basic dolls) or some that are only $7 (super basic Dollar General dolls) it's unfair to compare the lines as a whole. But yeah it pretty much depends on the MSRP.

Hasbro recently got the license from Disney, and Disney makes sure things are done right.  Just compare Kingdom Hearts to the trainwreck that has been post-X Final Fantasy.  Unfortunately, like Square, Hasbro doesn't seem interested in raising its other properties to an equal level to what Disney demands for their stuff.

The guy who is in charge of Nerf once spoke at my college so I learned that Hasbro has a strategy to have offerings in their core lines for every price range. Unfortunately to have cheaper offerings costs need to be cut in production. Descendants has higher quality but they also cost more. A kid with only a $15 can't buy even the most basic Descendants doll but they can afford a basic EG doll.

Like I'm honestly not a fan of unarticulated basic dolls but I understand they do serve a purpose.

I'll bet Disney hangs over Hasbro's shoulder (and anyone else who they license out to) and basically drop the hammer on anything that they don't feel is up to snuff.

This...
ETA: I'm trying to think of something better to say then "this", but I think the post explains everything I thought ~
It just makes me "O_o;" when people complain about the quality of cheaper toys. I mean honestly, I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be.

The problem is Mattel toys of a similar price tend to be of higher quality.  Hasbro has been trying to gain market share, but they act like they want to be a second tier product.

That's not always true. It depends on the line. I have seen $15 Barbies that lack articulation.

I'm not a fan of lack of articulation in dolls, but I've only started collecting some EAH and MH dolls.. I'm still keeping away from EQG.
I remember seeing a photo somewhere of either MH or EAH getting BASIC dolls (no articulation)

So glad I got the Evie and Carlos set cheaper on Amazon because the box was damaged. Just wish his wrists were jointed, not sure why his ankles are instead...

Can't wait to find someone to paint his hair and eyes to become Danny =D Also wish they had a girl with yellow/blond hair so she could be my Melissa "Surprise" =P

I would have Evie customized but her hair is too nice and great since they didn't put product in her hair to make it stiff. But yeah the only reason I had to have this set was for him because he looked so Danny like to me XD

I agree about the blonde hair. While I can understand that blonde has been over-popular in dolls for decades, totally ignoring the shade when it is so iconic seems like an odd (and limiting) choice.

I don't really think it's a fair comparison, to be honest. Descendants are licensed by Disney, of course they're not going to them by halves - it only makes sense that they'd put out the best product possible.

I am going to move this over to the Dollhouse as this thread is more about the Disney Decendants line than anything MLP :)

And as there is already a thread in here on the topic I am merging this on in.

I held out as long as I could. Then I found a single coronation Evie at Walmart and caved. Liked the book, the movie was goofy/cheesy fun. So I have a new Disney collection to start.

I still haven't bought one yet, but I know it's just a matter of time; I saw the ones that are being sold in the parks featuring ride themes, "the Attractionistas" and if I ever come across the Haunted Mansion doll I will have to have her. I'm also quite sure that the Mad Teacups doll would go nicely with my small AiW doll collection. And if I found them for a good deal I'd take the PotC and the Space Mountain girls too, for that matter! LOL :) I know me. It's just a matter of time.

The Theme Park Dolls in case they are news to anyone ;)
not my image, unfortunately :P

The themed ride dolls are not actually part of the Disney Descendants line. They are a line all there own. There is a review on them somewhere that shows the body is completely different than the Descendants girl body.

LOL Really?!! Okay, if they say so!!!! :lmao: Where did you see the review, I'd like to have a lookie. :) Kinda makes me want to buy them to compare myself.
Does make me feel better about their sculpts, which I don't think are quite as pretty but I'd still go for them faster than the Descendant dolls.

So tempting, unfortunately right now I'm spending all my doll money on the Designer Disney dolls sets. I'll keep an eye on your sales in case I get extra spending money though. That's my favorite Evie :)
