I made this for the playroom at my parent's house for my nieces to play with.
I started with the 3D Ponyville Pop Up book.
http://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Ponyville-Pop-Up/dp/B00L4UW4KE/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1437616547&sr=1-1&keywords=3d+ponyville
I then bought 2 rolls of adhesive backed magnet sheets. I popped out the ponies and accessories and stickers and applied them to the sticky side of the magnets. I then cut them out.

Then I bought a large magnetic dry erase board.

I painted a background based on a screen shot of a background I liked from the show. I made sure to leave plenty of foreground so that their is plenty of room for the ponies. I then coated it with several layers of finish to protect the paint.

Oh wow that does look like it would be a lot of fun!
-
That is amazing! What a creative idea, I bet your nieces love it. Actually, I would love it.
-
That's an utterly perfect idea and super cute. I have the paper play set too but this takes it to a whole new level and more durability too.
-
Aww, what a cute and fun idea! I used to love playing with and making felt and magnet scenes like that as a kid. I bet your nieces love it ^^
-
How super cute! :)
-
That is a really awesome idea! Looking at it reminds me of when I was little and a big part of my life revolved around colorforms. I bet you and your nieces will have a lot of fun with it!
-
That is an awesome idea! How creative! I'd love to see that in a G1 version !
-
Wow girlie!!!! That is sure to make any little one's day! :D Thats very creative indeed!!! Totally awesome!!!!
This is going to sound bad... but I cannot wait for my siblings and sister in laws (who are older than md and all live on their own!) to give me a neice or nephew. I dont like babies so much but when they can talk or start playing with toys like this I want to SPOIL them!! My husband and I have considered adopting a child in 10ish years. We like 'kids' because of this sort of reason-making really cool things for them to play with!!

What a wonderfully fun idea! ^.^
-
That's amazing! Imagine in 20+ years if someone finds it and is all like "Is this really MLP?!" and the community gets to start discussing when/how it was manufactured and *where in the world* others like it are ;) One of a kind and it looks like so much fun!
Beautiful artwork, btw :) Even working off reference pictures, I can't paint on a flat plane half as good as you!
-
Thanks everyone! Yes, my youngest niece especially enjoyed it.
I'm thinking I may also turn the board around and paint a couple of indoor scenes on the other side. Probably the bakery and Rarity's boutique because those were the other two scenes in the pop up book and there are a lot of bits pertaining to those.

This is such a cut idea! Ingenious and a talented painter too, congrats!
-
Oh I love the idea! :)
-
Very awesome idea, and such a creative and engaging activity for the kids. I love it, you did a great job!
-
I have no comment other than making a Homer Simpson drooling sound.
-
This is so awesome!! I like the extra addition of being able to dress up the pony dressforms with accessories. How long did it take you to do all that cutting?

What an adorable idea! :) That looks like so much fun!

Quite a while! Two weeks at least. I would do a little bit every night after work.
Yes, the set came with all of the Gala outfits plus loads of extra pony wear. I just had to match up the ponies with the outfits to make sure that when I made the pony magnets they were facing the right direction to wear their dresses. The magnets are strong enough to layer 3 deep on the board.

great work! though you could print out the ponies on card-stock without having to buy the pop-up book, right?

Sure! Though if you can get the pop up book for a good price ($10 or less, they were originally $10 in the store). Then it might actually cost less than using all the color ink in your printer. Plus the book pop outs are on the really nice shiny kind of card stock so also maybe a little more durable than average card stock.
But if you only want to do a few ponies rather than the massive amount that come with the book, then printing them would be more cost effective.

I am going to move this over to the Arts & Crafts Corral for you :)
Gorgeous work!
-
Can you be MY aunt????

That looks like so much fun! I'd love to have you as my aunt if I were a kid :P
I wouldn't even mind playing with that set at my current age, hee hee.

This is such a creative, fun idea! Great job painting the background scenery, too.
