Title: This might be a strange question but..
Post by: Cyber-Satan on July 19, 2015, 04:07:59 PM
Have G3s started gaining more popularity as of lately, or is this just me? :P
I remember before the G4 ponies came out, there wasn't too much hype about G3s because they were still quite common at the time, but because G4 is now well into it's lifespan, have G3s perhaps raised in popularity and possibly value? Just a curious question since I've seen a lot more G3 related brags and forum posts lately..maybe I'm just a bit slow with keeping up with the pony times.

What are your guy's thoughts?
:what:

I think it's because G3s are quite easy to come by, inexpensive, and there was an abundancy of em back in the day.

it seems like it! maybe it's because the people who grew up with them are getting older and are starting to get into collecting? it seems like a lot of the people here who grew up with g1 also mainly collect g1, so maybe it's the same case for g3.

they're also cheap, cute, and it's easy to come across very mint g3s. even ones who look junky are usually easily fixable as they haven't had the time to acquire all the problems that g1s are prone too.

I too have noticed more G3 brags but I haven't seen an increase in value or else I'd be picking up all the ones I abandon at flea markets.

I think it may just be that they are plentiful.  When I go to the flea market, I find just as many if not more G3 than G4.  And yet at the same time, there is such a variety of characters as opposed to G4.

I agree with Shrojjy, though that those who had G3 as children are getting older and some of them may be starting to collect.  Though, if you were 6 years old in 2003, you would still be only 18 today and so won't have a lot of disposable income yet.  But as I said, G3 are the gen I see most often at the flea markets.

It may well be possible, considering G3 brought me here the first place. The DVDs, not the toys, but G3 regardless.

I thought they were worth more but then came down to almost nothing a year or two ago - not sure why.  Maybe they are rising again - I think they fluctuate :)

I remember something similar happening with G2 when G3 first came out. G2 were hated by a lot of people when they first came out because they were so different and back then collectors weren't used to the idea of multiple generations and their styles. But, when G3 came out, G3 were popular (as G4 is, though maybe not in quite the same way) and G2 started to grow in popularity too.

I think it is also the fact that the kids who grew up with them are starting to be collectors too. I love the fact that there are G3 ponypeople who want to collect what was important in their childhoods, just like some of us collect G1 for the same reason. I have some G3 I love, but they're not ponies I grew up with, so the bond isn't the same. I imagine for some people who grew up with G3 it's the same but in reverse.

I'm all for past generations getting more love, anyhow. I just hope with some of the QC issues on G3 with the Avon ponies etc that they endure in the way that G1 somehow have because there are some very nice G3 ponies and it's also about preserving another generation of pony memories.

I think its a bit artificial right now. They really dropped off in price (and popularity) for a couple of years; I think I see their pricing going back up a touch (at least in the less common ponies) to closer to what they were a few years ago. So its more they are going back to where they were - if that makes sense?

Or maybe it's because the G1 prices are climbing quite high at the moment. G3's are more affordable and thus easier to acquire. :)
