Title: Your Strangest Impulse Buy?
Post by: zombienixon on May 31, 2015, 05:44:26 PM
So, on Monday, I bought a carburetor.

I didn't need it (my car's a 2002, well after the last carbureted US market cars were made), but I decided I wanted one while I was out in the junkyard looking for stuff for my car. And since they had everything half off that day (apparently junkyards have sales. How did I miss that?), I figured it was a good a time as ever.

And now that I have it, I kind of don't know what exactly to do with it.  I've taken it apart and fiddled with it a little (they're a lot simpler than I thought) and put it back together, but not much beyond that.  I was thinking of cleaning it up, and making a cutaway of it so you can see how parts of it work (which is easier said than done), or just putting it on my desk as a large pencil holder.

So what's the strangest thing you've bought on a whim? Was it something you've gotten and then thought, "Now what?"

I bought an adult size unicorn rocking horse. Granted, it doesn't look exactly like a unicorn and the guy made it all by hand out of wood, but I needed it!

Haha, that's a good one! My brother buys a lot of random mechanical stuff when he finds it, too. He's getting better about that, though.

My weirdest impulse buy? Hmmm... I buy a lot of stuff on impulse... but they're usually toys. Ones that I would want anyway. I dunno, I'm pretty typical with my impulse purchases: toys, video games, music...

One time I went to a yard sale in my tiny car with a dog carrier taking up the whole backseat. I bought a bookshelf. I still don't know how I fit that into my car! (Seriously, my car is really small.) I think that was the same yard sale where I bought some random pretty vases. I don't usually collect breakable things -- I have a cat! They're still intact, though. :) Good cat.

This is incredibly timely. I recently bought a huge bag of POGS and milkcaps. I then proceeded to spend the entire night sorting them into respective groups by brand and theme.

I was suddenly 12.

At the Long Beach antique/swap.  I was ridiculously excited about it. They are either horse or some sort of cattle incisors. Plan on eventually incorporating them into some jewelry.

I bought a longboard (skateboard)...which I've used less than a dozen times...because I don't know anyone else who skates and I'm afraid of hurting myself.

A big video game retailer is filing bankruptcy and all the stores are selling out their goods for 40%. Me and boyfriend went there and instead of games I came out with a stuffed Koopa and a stuffed Piranha Plant. I do have stuffed Mario and Luigi as well as a Goomba since before, so I kind of extended that family.

My strangest impulse buy would have to be this shelf/coat rack. It was in the window of an antique shop for £10 and I didn't even have to give it a second thought. It's proven to be very useful!

Probably some nail polish when Target was closing down.

It was 80% off.

Sometimes late at night I both pinterest and ebay, and make questionable choices.  In my craft box I now have all kinds of eyes, tiny scale people for train set dioramas, false teeth, and god only knows what else.  And I NEVER DO THESE PINS!!!

I found it in a little antique shop downtown. I picked it up at first because I thought it was a cool zombie head. Then I noticed something inside the head. When I took a closer look, yep, it was a bound and hanged woman. She even has on high heels.

It was waaaaay to bizarre not to buy. The best part was that the owner of the shop, a little old man, had no idea. It's sterling silver so he offered to polish it for me and I asked if he knew anything about it and showed him the little woman. He was pretty speechless, lol. But he didn't raise the price or anything (it was $75) and all he could tell me about it was that the chain and clasp were used a lot in the 1920s.

And yes, I have worn it. It freaks my sister out, she thinks it's cursed, lol.

Uhhh...Nazi coins, from an antique flea market. Apparently they've been sealed since 1943! The story is *supposedly* that the grandfather of the guy who sold them to our seller fought in Germany. He went to the bank right after the war ended and got a whole roll of Nazi coins to bring back home as souvenirs, and the ones. And now Nazi coins are outlawed in Germany. Or something. I dunno, we kinda got swept up in the moment and the story sounded cool, we didn't even realize how possibly-fake it sounded til after the fact lol. And we don't even have a coin collection, or any war memorabilia...

I think my most random impulse buy was an antique hat. It's kind of a beanie with a tassel on it and on the front it has a moose sewn on it, enshrined in rhinestones. Oh, and it's bright purple. It's actually a Moose Lodge Hat (I guess the Moose are one of those clubs like the Elks or Eagles or Shriners). It was just so hilarious I had to get it.

An ugly chair from Goodwill about a decade and a half ago. I loved it. My mom hated it. She slowly inched it down the driveway, after telling me it couldn't stay in her living room, to the trash pile. Before I realized it, my beloved chair had been carried off by the garbage man. I still mourn that chair.....

A t-shirt that says "You are the Coco to my Chanel."  It made me giggle.

That's actually pretty metal.  I'd just make sure someone's soul isn't trapped in there.

Oh yeah, I think it's an awesome art piece. It has so much detail. I just wonder what was going through the persons mind when they were making it.

Mine was a plush My Neighbour Totoro Catbus kleenex box holder XD It even has a sound device in the tail, but it just makes a generic meowing noise. I found it in a second hand store for a dollar and it was just so random I couldn't NOT buy it haha. Pretty sure it is a knockoff, but I love it all the same. Everyone who sees it says it's creepy as hell though, lol

Probably a vintage 1970s roller disco top/jacket thing. Everyone who's laid eyes on it thinks that it's an ungodly abomination but I love it (never get to wear it though) :P

I have no idea. I need to stop going on eBay in the middle of the night.

...For now, I'll say it's that huge spool of black satin ribbon. I have way more than I'll ever know what to do with. It's just kind of... there. Forever. I'll never use it all.

Haha, love this thread! I think I need a Handicorn. My daughter loves finger puppets.

Mine was a fish phone I bought at Big Lots. It was one of the old style phones with a cord. The base was shaped like a rock, and the handset was shaped like a fish ... so I was talking into a fish. If you search vintage fish phone on eBay, that's what it looks like. Wish I still had it.

My strangest impulse buy was a Venus Flytrap years ago. It was on clearance at Lowes. It was itty-bitty and sickly. I thought I could bring it back from the brink of death but the plant was probably too far gone to begin with. >: I still feel bad about it, too.

A betta fish a few years ago. He lived for several months then died when I put him in a new tank. I did not expect to get a fish at all when I was at the store. Probably the most random buy for me.

A bear skin rug. Which is in very bad shape. And I'm some sort of almost an animal activist, I certainly never would have wanted one otherwise. It sits in a ball in my closet and I have no plans to repair it or display it. I look at it and think "wtf was I thinking?" Trouble is, I don't think I can legally resell it!

Thank you for reminding of my own. I once bought this purple floral fabric and a sewing pattern to make my own plush rabbit. I hadn't sewn anything since like a decade before I bought it, and even then I'd only sewn the projects required in school. The fabric and pattern have been in a drawer for like 6 years now.

Hah! That's quite a quandry. Honestly... I'd probably throw it away... though I have a friend who likes taxidermy, so I might try to just give it to her first. Do you know anyone with such interests? ;)
