Title: So why do /you/ collect ponies?
Post by: TogoMimori on May 24, 2015, 06:51:39 PM
Back in the dark depths of middle school (which I don't think was a good time for anyone, but nonetheless) I was struggling really bad with depression and anxiety. Obviously I latched on to my little pony as a coping skill. Seeing as g4 was brand new at that time it was very easy to get into the fandom. I then found the joy that the toys can bring and started collecting them. I honestly can thank mlp for saving my life and bringing me constant joy (why I joined this site, its so nice to talk to other collectors!).

So to go back to the topic of the thread, I'd like to hear how some of y'all got into mlp and collecting!!

I've always wanted to collect something and I've always been interested in so many things that I wasn't sure where to start.  If anything, I guess I was a collector of posters as my old bedroom in my grandparent's house is still filled with them.  I also liked anything relating to Spongebob, so I had a few toys here and there, but nothing much.

When I was 21, I moved out and into an apartment with my then boyfriend (now fiance) and he's sorta the one that got me started with ponies.  I had gotten into FiM earlier that year, so he got me a few shirts from We Love Fine for Christmas.  While we were at Walmart, I saw the ride-along Rainbow Dash toy and asked him if he'd get it for me, which was awkward because I don't like asking people to buy me things... but I didn't have a job.  Anyway, soon after that the blind bags started coming out, so he'd buy those for me since they were cheap, and then a few months later the Rainbow Dash and :muffin: Funko figures were released, and our roommate picked them up for me since he knew I liked MLP.

Basically, I didn't go into this thinking I'd collect ponies.  I enjoyed the show and that was enough for me, since My Little Pony was certainly not something I ever saw myself liking.

So, over the next few months, I got some more toys and branched out into other merchandise, but the Funko figures and blind bags are what really did it for me.  I was going through a depression after moving, so having brightly colored ponies in my room really did help cheer me up.

G1 grew on me last year and I started collecting them once I was more active on this site.  I've since added about 30 G1's to the herd.

Now it's 2015, 4 years after I got into collecting and I'm preparing for the "pony room" I'll be having in our new house that we're moving into next month.  I've been working at my current job for over a year, so I can buy whatever I want with my money, and that just happens to be ponies (among other things, but mostly ponies). :P I have sooooo many G1 and G4 ponies and they all make me so happy, so I think that's really why I collect...because they make me happy.''

So yeah, to answer your question: I collect ponies because they put a smile on my face and I enjoy the hunt for new toys!

Oh!  I have to add that it absolutely does not help that one my best friend's also collects ponies. We're always buying each other ponies.

my story is kinda similar to Moonbeams, I've always wanted to collect something, but nothing really caught my eye. until I got my first G4 rainbow dash toy....and from that toy comes all the rest of my ponies :D

plus I like pink sparkly things! it's perfect!

oh! and I collect because I have nothing better to do and ponies make me happy :>

I originally set out to replace my favourite childhood ponies, then ended up seeing others that really appealed to me, so I ended up getting those as well. I like to keep my herd small though, so they're easier to look after. :)

I collected them as a kid, and collecting makes me feel nostalgic as an adult! I find them aesthetically pleasing to look at (pastel! chubby pony shapes! big sparkly eyes!), and I enjoy setting up little dioramas for them, as well as photographing and customizing them! ^_^

My answer is quite simple: because I love them. That's about it. I have loved them ever since I saw my first G3s. And I love collecting toys in general, so that adds to it :)

I grew up collecting G1 ponies as a child in the late 80s and early 90s.  I've always had a tendency to collect things at various points in my life: ponies, plush animals, trading cards, Littlest Pet Shop, Beanie Babies.  I got back into collecting MLP a few years ago, initially just replacing some ponies from my childhood and buying ponies that I had always wanted as a kid, but could never find.  (I was absolutely thrilled to buy my very own Baby Lickety Split and Spike: I had been obsessed with them as a child because of the MLP Movie, but couldn't find them in "the wild.")   :)

When I started looking around online, I discovered there were tons of ponies released in the UK/Europe that I never knew existed that I just had to have. (I remember thinking "OMG, MUST HAVE!" the first time I saw a Baby Applejack.)  Over time, I wandered into the Nirvana area of the Arena and discovered that there are even more beautiful, amazing ponies out there that I might need........

I got my first pony (Hula Hula) when I was about 3 or 4, and collected all through my childhood and then in early high school when I met my then best friend who collected too.  I stopped collecting when the G1 line ended and the second hand markets dried up due to Sunday trading coming in and the venues for flea markets (shopping centre car parks) disappeared.

For years I didn't give them much thought until my mum moved out and I tried to help her out by selling the 'spares' as we called them and clean out the garage.  I was dealing with a lot in my life and as I started getting into ebay selling, I rediscovered them and slowly got back into collecting.

I've only been on the Arena for less than a year but it's so cool to connect with lots of other collectors!!  :grouphug:

I grew up playing with ponies in the 80s as a horse crazy little girl and started collecting again when G3 came out. There's a lotta nostalgia and love there for me.

I started watching FiM and decided I wanted some of the characters from that. I had joined the Arena a few years ago to discuss Monster High but wasn't into ponies back then. I ended up going to Dream Valley and Strawberry Reef, saw how cute g1 and g3 are, and decided I need some of those, too. (I also like g2 but that developed more slowly and I still don't have any yet.)

My bf bought me my first two ponies: Styling Strands Fluttershy and Rarity. (I love how those two interact on the show.) I'm still very much working my way through actually learning what I love and don't love pony-wise. I only have so much room so I can't just grab and keep everything. Fortunately, we're going to be doing some changes to my room that should make my collecting a bit easier.

My current goals are the g1 Princess ponies and Sundae Best ponies, a handful of g3s I really love (the "Coco" ponies: Coconut Cream, Coconut Grove and Marshmellow Coco, as well as Soda Float and Butterpop.) I also collect via theme a lot: Princesses (obviously), "tea" ponies (I have Tea Leaf so far), "Coco" ponies (I have Coco Berry).

I basically use ponies as decorative art to reflect things that are already true about my life or that were already interests of mine to begin with. I also love ponies that remind me of my friends, family or characters from my novels. (I'm a writer).

I always loved horses. And when I was little, my dad used to goaway on business all the time and he'd bring my sister and I back each a toy. It'd usually be ponies or fashion star fillies or Barbie horses.

So I can really thank my dad for getting me into my little ponies. I collect the G1s and that's it. I have a few of each gen but I'm all about the G1s.

As a kid in the late 80s and early-to-mid 90s, MLP was one of few toy lines that I absolutely loved and I tended to play with them the most, apart from playing TMNT with my brother (although he sometimes played ponies with me as well). I didn't even realize G2 was a thing while that was going on, because by then I was "too old" for ponies and had moved on to Beanie Babies, Pokemon, and Powerpuff Girls. My love for Pokemon has stayed with me, and at some point during G3, I saw some ponies in a drugstore and was hit so hard by nostalgia, lol. They were so cute, I started collecting again and dug through our garage until I found a small handful of my childhood collection to keep out in my room.

It all really snowballed from there and I've collected off and on as an adult - even when I haven't been actively collecting, though, I never stopped loving them and being a collector at heart. I have struggled for years with depression and anxiety, and these colorful, cute little ponies have always helped in their small way. Even just picking one up off a shelf, holding her for a minute and running my fingers through her mane and tail...it's always helped bring me back to a better mental/emotional place.

Back in 2012 I was stuck at home for few months ,recovering from a back injury ,during that time I was going through netflix content :) I watched all the anime on there and all the movies about horses there, when I ran out of things to watch on these 2 categories I started getting suggestions to watch MLP FIM, It was like a month later that I started watching it and after few episodes I was very much hooked :)
After few days I had watched all the episodes on Netflix and was searching for more about them online , you tube and went to the MLP site as well :).
few weeks later I saw a couple of ponies for sale on the store by my house Tuesday Morning , Ride Along Fluttershy and RD catched my eye ,I looked at them and kinda felt weird for wanting them and then I just put them on the basket :) I paid for them and walked home, I opened them and put them in my office on  window sill :) they were very nice and I liked them a lot, I saw then a coupon for Hasbro Toy Store in their package , I went to the site and I wanted to just get the other 4 ponies to have the 6 of them ,I saw more characters there and got them as well, even Cadance ,Talking Light up, I received them few days later and it was like having a present  coming to you :) It was on after that, I went to check the toy sections of Target, Walmart,TRU and got most of the ponies that were out then, It was July 2012, by September I had already jumped to Ebay to get the euro exclusives :) must of them I was able to find , but the Yellow Carriage for Sweetie Swirl that came as a bonus in Europe with the Rarity Carousel was nowhere to be found, I had lost  it on an auction and was bummed for not having a way to get it, I have come across the Strawberry Reef site for info on all the releases and there on the link section was a link to the Arena ,I joined and started asking about this carriage ,I was helped right away here with links to other countries Amazons site,I found 1 for sale in Germany but It would not ship to USA, I started looking for a member here to receive it and then send it my way :) I found someone eventually and I was then complete as far as G4's it was October 2012 when the first Funko Vinyl came out :)  , Dealing with back pain and then being forced to retire was a big deal ,There was  little to do about it,seeing Doctors and more Doctors with little  good outcome every time was really the darkest of times for someone who was active and on the go all the time , so the collecting became like an awesome thing to have and just focus on instead of the problems that I could not resolve, I was told the spine disc can heal itself with time and no operation is possible,Pool therapies and ponies got me through :) ,Still dealing with pain even today but ponies keep me busy and entertained .
the best therapy I must say :)

I was a little girl about 8-9 at the time and ponies hit the stores early 80s and I fell in love with them. I remember buying my first ponies with my allowance. I had fun with them and played. I used to put on plays with them.
I even once found a little heart to go with Megan's Locket the rainbow of light. I made the charm into a necklace and tied it around Megan's neck.
I had a big herd about 100 of ponies. However I was foolish and gave them all away.  :cloud: So I spotted Medley on dream valley and wondered if there was one for sale on ebay? The rest is history. :good:

Nostalgia mainly. Something, I will never know what, sent me looking for my childhood ponies. Only to discover they had been given away many years before by my mum. This sudden loss (yes I am a drama queen) drove me to the internet and the wonderful world of collecting. For a very long time I was a lurker on chat rooms and good old yahoo forums, drooling over on Dream Valley, before being big enough and ugly enough when ebay rocked around to start actually buying ponies. I intended just to get a few to replace my childhood collection but by then my interest had been captured by all the amazing ponies I had never seen before...one pony lead to ten lead to 100 and that was a slippery slope to wonderful pony-ness.

I haven't decided exactly why I'm collecting ponies yet or what it is that I want to accomplish with this little project...but I definitely have a color-coded list of ponies I like, ponies I want, and ponies I want to share with other people. There's something specific about the joy of getting a new pony, sharing them with others who love them, creating interesting displays to show them off, styling their manes, it's all very new to me and very exciting! I hope to have a better answer to this in about six weeks

In 2007 I got a Minty from the McDonald's promotion at the time and ended up liking her enough to want the entire set, which extended into wanting more ponies in general. At first I only liked the Ponyville ponies but I grew to like the others too. Mainly I collect them because it makes me happy.

I had G1 as a child and when I first started collecting toys, ponies were one of the toys I decided to collect. There are so many pretty ponies that were made that I didn't have as a child :) While I consider most of my other toy lines near complete- ponies I consider being furthest from being complete. I think this is because the pony collection is so extensive. I limit myself in all my collections- I am not a completist in that I want every single item that was released in a toy line. So I have a specific list of ponies that I want, but sometimes when I go to toy shows and see them in person, I find myself adding ones to the list that I didn't think I wanted originally lol! Whizzer and Mimic are good examples of this. The reason that kept me away from Mimic was her price and I thought I didn't care for Whizzer because I am not real big on pink. But when I saw them both in person, I fell in love and eventually had to add them to my collection :)

So, in short I guess it is nostalgia for me and because they make me happy. One of my favorite things to do is find a dirty, disgusting toy at a flea market/Good Will and try to restore/clean it the best I can(especially ponies!) If I see a pony that isn't on my list, I will buy if it isn't too much just so I can try to restore it :)

When G3 first came out I collected them, too. But then I realized that I didn't feel the same way that I felt about the G1 ponies- the excitement just wasn't the same for the G3s as much. Hubby thinks I was trying to fill the G1 void with G3 ponies lol! I eventually stopped collecting them and one day will probably thin out the herd.

I was 5 years old when G1 ponies first appeared in stores, and being a horse-crazy little girl who loved pink and unicorns, I was naturally drawn to them.  I have a lot of happy memories of my childhood that revolve around ponies, and the family members who gave them to me, the friends who I played ponies with.

As a 20-something in university, I re-discovered ponies online.  They were a reminder of happy, secure times, at a point in my life when I wasn't as happy and secure.  So nostalgia for my pony-ridden childhood is what drew me into collecting.  They still just make me happy whenever I see them.

Same here.  There's no nostalgia to it (I didn't have any as a kid.  I don't even think I knew about them at all.)  I just like cute things, and these are just really cute.

I had an atypical childhood that destined I would be one of the few children in the 80's who were not allowed to own ponies.  A cousin had them, though, and was justifiably surprised to discover that I didn't even know what they were.  She brought out her moderate (seemed HUGE at the time) collection, and my love of MLPs was born.  Years later, I had all but forgotten about them, though I never stopped loving horses in general.  In college, the G3s were just fading out, giving way to G3.5.  There were still a few G3s to be found, however, and, when I saw them, they stirred that childhood memory in my cousin's basement.  Not until after I graduated, did a dear friend buy my first three ponies for me.  I was quite delighted.  FINALLY, I had my own ponies!  However, finances dictated that I live with my parents for a few more years, so the ponies lived in a storage bin, safely out of sight.  (What they don't know, won't hurt me.)  Eventually, I was financially stable and able to pay my own rent and shut the door of my bedroom for certain visitors.  At that time, I discovered a second (third?  fifteenth?) hand toy store that had two of the saddest looking ponies I had ever seen: Dancing Butterflies and Moondancer.  I felt bad for them, so I bought Moondancer.  Very shortly after that, I discovered this place and learned how to clean up and reveal the hidden beauty in Moondancer.  Now I was curious and excited.  Returning to that store, I found a few of the 25th Anniversary Inspiration ponies, including Sweetie Belle.  Sweetie Belle was and is the prettiest pony I have ever seen.  Something about her made collecting ponies suddenly make sense and it's been a love affair ever since!

My mum has bought a G1 pony for me when I was born, but when I had the age of playing with the pony the G2 line had started and I completely loved all of them. So I had quite a few of them in the past and a few years ago I decided that I want to have them all (G2) and then I started collecting and I am happy with every ponymail ^.^

My sister and I each got Cherries Jubilee when I was about 6 or 7, and I got several other ponies while I was a kid which I always loved. I didn't really think much about them for awhile, but when G3 came out it kind of reignited my interest, since I was now an adult and they reminded me of the G1s. I loved all the new designs coming out so I collected a lot of them. Now I have a few G4s and I enjoy the FiM cartoon, although I'm not as active a collector as I was since I tend to collect specific designs I like rather than all variants of a pony or what have you.

Since I joined the Arena I'm always impressed with customisers, too. If I had more money I would buy and commission soooo many customs!

Well, I was curious about the brony craze ("why do grown men suddenly take interest into this girly toyline?") and made some research, discovered customs, wanted to make one and ended up prefering the earlier generations. And realized that there's no age for appreciating toys or other childlish stuff.

I feel this way about the current show, especially.  Whenever I'm down, I can count on FiM to restore my faith in ponies.  I've even carried a pony in my pocket or luggage when I'm going somewhere stressful.  Just knowing that one little piece of my collection is with me gives me something happy to think about.

I collect '80s toys in general, and most of my collections started with the toys from my childhood -- My Little Pony, Care Bears, She-Ra, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite.. Alot of them got lost / ruined through the years, but thankfully, most of my MLPs and She-Ra dolls have been hanging out with me since the beginning. :)

I think they're pretty and it makes me happy so I do it.

Initially I played with G3's as a kid, nearly sold the lot. I kept them once I started watching FiM, and stuck them on a shelf with my tiny G4 herd. I branched out, learning about the other gens, and decided to collect them all. I'm still at an age where playing with toys is 'acceptable', I guess? So there's the innocence. It's also an escape-I can sit down and play with my ponies and it's like I'm 7 again without a care in the world. The community is awesome and the ponies are so darn cute, so there's no reason to leave for me. Either way, I love it!

Yep! Made a lot of pixels when I was new here. Speaking of, I think why my collecting is alive and well instead of going dormant for a few years and then back is because I'm a part of this community. I wasn't a part of it for years though, collected for many years without knowing any other collectors. I knew of the forums and had an account but it wasn't really my thing. Made the account and didn't do anything past that with it until 2013 when I made a new one and began using and sharing my art. I love making pixel ponies, I should make some more soon.

I've always liked animals. And when I was a kid I didn't get much in the way of toys, so this way it kind of balances out.

And they make me happy, which is always a good thing :frolic:

This is going to sound horrible, but ... getting something in the mail is often the only thing that makes me happy. It's really hard to admit that. I think I chose ponies for nostalgic reasons; my sister and I had a collection of about 50 as kids. Then I found the MLP community, and everyone has been so friendly that I've just stuck around, even though I don't buy many ponies these days.

As a kid they were some of my favorite toys, and I started looking at them again because of how nostalgic they made me feel. I started restoring some of my old ponies that I had been too rough with, which eventually lead me to start customizing and collecting all the old ponies I wanted as a kid but never got (and then some :) ). I guess I collect them because I think they're adorable, and I like the art aspect of customizing and restoring them
