Am I the only one here who thinks it's so bad that it's truly outrageous :huh: The official movie trailer is up on Youtube and the amount of dislikes that video has in such a short time is baffling. I've been looking forward to the movie ever since it was announced that they'll be doing a remake, but it pays no homage to the original cartoon at all! Seems like it's geared towards the tweens/pre-teens of today. What are your thoughts on it? Love it or nahhhh?

We're not that far apart Jordan, I was born in '93 and I love all things eighties including Jem! I didn't grow up with the cartoon yet I feel so repulsed by it.
We all know its not gonna be good the minute they used a One Direction song for the trailer. :p

but just....they did exactly what I was afraid of and hollywood-ize it and make it....bad?
the orignial had some really deep charater development, breakdowns, confidence boosts, but they could have made this any charaters and gotten away with it, seems more like they slapped Jem's name on it to make the money trickle in -_-

It's cool, their songs are not bad and zayn's a hottie (farewell 1D!). But the minute they used their song you'll immediately know who the movie's target market is!!
I totally agree. I'm also pretty fed up with the whole generic "small town girl makes it big" script.

:blink: Wow, that does not look good. I'm new to Jem and I've only watched up to episode 17, but I can tell that it just doesn't have the same energy or charm as the cartoon. Also, not enough 80's style and no Misfits! >_<

I love the original Jem but this looks terrible. Jerrica in the cartoon was an adult taking care of the Starlight Girls and Starlight music. She wasn't a young teenager. It looks like they've taken out Synergy completely also.

It doesn't look that bad but if what I heard about the Misfits not being in it is true then that kills it. What made Jem Jem imho was the rivalry between the bands. If they kept that it would have elevated this above a Hannah Montana wannabe.

I think it looks rubbish. Really, really bad. There's nothing to the original cartoon other than the name and the pink eye makeup. It could have been something really good, but instead it just looks like a million other movies about some small town teenager becoming a massive star. The only difference is they've stolen a brand name to try and elevate it above other movies just like it.
And TBF, the choice of 1D song isn't bad. Story of my Life is one of their better songs lol :)

Ugh... This is so disappointing. If you take out all the key things that made Jem Jem, what is the point of making a Jem movie? The 1980s Jem cartoon was / is very special to me. I only got to see it one month of the year for the few years my grandparents took me with them to Florida. It did not air where I live. It's probably the retro cartoon I'm the most fiercely protective of because of that.
I was very interested in this movie when I first heard about it. I am equal parts baffled, disgusted and enraged at what it has turned out to be. So much wasted potential!

these were my thoughts exactly. I am not too familiar with Jem and most of my knowledge comes either from other people I know and who like it, or from reading after things I know they mentioned. I have just seen the trailer today, and it is even obvious to me that this movie has little to do with the original series. the whole thing seems to be so different that I simply don't understand why the movie shares the title with the cartoon :blink:

Never saw the original Jem cartoon, and was kinda curious about the live action movie. But it sounds like the movie isn't going to be good, so... maybe I ought to find the cartoon on DVD and watch that instead? I'm kinda getting into the idea of watching 80s cartoons (I have been doing a marathon of watching the original 80s Transformers series in recent weeks).

I didn't know about it until I saw this post! I didn't have any expectations, but I'm somehow still disappointed! It feels very Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana-esque. But I realize I'm not the targeted audience, so... maybe this will make it more appealing to younger generations! I knew they couldn't bring back 80's glamor Jem with her crazy neon outfits! I will remember the cartoons fondly and hope the newer versions renew interest in my preferred version. ;)

Ugh. No Misfits, no Synergy, no HOLOGRAMS! It's like they pulled a generic "coming of age rise to stardom" script out of the nearest pile and went "eh, slap some pink hair on her and call it Jem"

Honestly I do like how they look so I am curious how the dolls will look. I'm still really disappointed that the Misfits aren't going to be in it. If they had kept the Misfits in it would still feel like Jem. I could take Jem being aged down and her aunt (who is still female) taking the role of the adult parts of Jerrica's life but without a rival band it's going to be boring. I mean maybe this is before the Misfits come onto the scene and if they hint towards that at the end it would really improve everything.

Their hair had the bright colors in them. Really the only thing I'm missing is the Misfits tho if they hint at that at the end then I can accept this as a prequel. Jem isn't really Jem without the Misfits at least on the horizon.

Its the same crap they take our favorite shows from when we where kids and just spit out a new outlook on it trying so hard to bring the popularity and marketing and money back.
Plus we get all these directors we have never heard of before, and script wrighters ect..

I loved watching Jem in the 80's! I saw a pic of the cast in the newspaper and bowed my head in shame...

Oh- and there are no holograms, and no Synergy. And Eric, the bad guy-(now Erica) is who creates "Jem".
I am okay with a new take on an old idea (like the Jem comic) - but this is not even similar to the Jem concept in any way. I realize they are trying to appeal to the teen demographic- but in that case why use the name Jem at all? It just seems like they changed the names for a generic script that was already written.
Disappointing to say the least.

The trailer really makes it feel it's going to be a Hannah Montana type of movie and they've just decided to call it Jem the movie and use a few of the same names. I agree with a lot of the points that have already been made. This new movie isn't Jem it just has the Jem name. They've taken out everything that made Jem what it was. I'm going to stick with the 80's cartoon.

My comments earlier are simply due to my anger that they slapped the name "Jem" on it.
I do think the trailer looks like it could be a semi decent movie, but it's not Jem and the Holograms. They've removed everything that made Jem what it was and it's disappointing to the fans, especially when everyone has waited so long for a movie to be made.

Well it seems to me that they just used the name Jem to get attention and a quick buck from people who are nostalgic from the original cartoon, if they have used something new like "Glittering Dazzler and the Memes" no one would have cared >_<
Just like the Godzilla 1998 movie used the famous name to grab attention but it was no near at all from the original monster , if it was instead "Thundergator" no one would have turned heads
My suggestion is to better support the IDW Jem comic if you are nostalgic ^.^

I remembered this video from LimeCrime Makeup founder Doe Deere's instagram! - it was meant to be for a casting call competition ran by the JEM producers which didn't came to fruition in the end since they ended up hiring other current actors (the ones you see in the trailer now). Sneaky promo stunt.

I have a strong feeling that she has been involved in it since that point but not in a creative capacity. I can't remember for sure, though...either way, there's none of Christy's plot base in the movie, which is something that made a lot of people cross (especially since Christy has always been very actively involved with the fanbase).
The Jem community have been ripping each other to shreds over this whole movie thing for the last year and a half, as to whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, whether you can update a 1980s based show...but now the trailer is out, I have only seen negative comments from them. It's pretty much what most people here have said - it's fine, but why attach the name Jem to it? I don't understand why, if they want to take every story point out and rework it, they need to use the Jem name.
I'm a Misfit fan, and always have been, so I'm happy they're not involved in this plotline. I think it would've made me rage-throw socks at the computer xD. But although I dislike Jem herself as a character, the whole core value of why Jerrica becomes Jem in the first place is totally lost in a wave of teenage superficial "uploaded a video on youtube, LOL". No orphan children to protect, no home to run...no Synergy...no Misfits...
The only thing I could see in the trailer that had any correlation to the original Jem was the resentment over Jem getting all the attention instead of the whole band. I'm pretty sure that's somewhere in the original 5 episodes that make up Truly Outrageous. Otherwise it's a completely different story.
I don't have an issue with the film, I just have an issue with it being called Jem. It's like they've chosen to name the characters Jem names in order to try and pull in viewers from an older demographic who remember the original Jem, but it's nothing like it.
A lot of people on the TOJ! list are comparing it to Josie and the Pussycats. I personally wish they'd left Jem alone. If they aren't going to use the original basis and original plot structure, then better to call the characters something else. I'd just recommend people to watch the original cartoon instead ;)

I don't know, it's just wishful thinking.
Though, I could have sworn a few years ago or so I heard they were going to do a live-action treatment of Voltron (yet another 80s cartoon), but I guess it didn't get the green-light as I think the rough script was leaked online and it turned out that the script -- or rather the idea for the live-action Voltron movie -- wasn't faithful at all to the original cartoon and... I don't know... maybe enough fans of Voltron raised such an uproar over it online that no further talk of a live-action movie Voltron was ever brought up (as far as I'm concerned). So... maybe this new Jem movie might not happen with all of these poor responses to the trailer? *Shrugs* Like I said, probably wishful thinking.

If they were going to do that, I think they would've done it already, sadly. And they would've hired Christy to help with the writing.
It could be done really effectively with the real plot and characters. It could be set back in the 1980s, if need be. With modern effects, Synergy could be really cool and the sci fi element would have worked nicely. But I imagine we're stuck with social-media-teen instead.

I'm going to assume the change to Erica Raymond is tied to the change to teenage girls as protagonists. Pitting them against an adult male villain, especially with online themes and components, could be seen as unscrupulous, immoral and unquestionable.
I also think it's safe to say that the people developing this movie don't give a thought to what fans of the original show want, think or feel. They are interested in hooking tweens from 2015. There's nothing wrong with making stuff for this group, but gutting something from the 1980s and rehashing it for them seems like a really poorly planned move. Of all the remakes or retro throwbacks I've seen, this seems like it is going to be the most butchered and botched.
Such a shame when Jem is a premise that has so much potential.

My personal beef with the movie: As someone who is working in the entertainment and music industry, I truly am sick of the tween demographic. Now the revamped JEM is just another figure to a sales value, like everything else. It is possible to create a readaptation that suits everyone but I guess the crew has something else in mind.
I agree its wasted potential considering the fact that 90s aesthetic (fashion, design etc) is making a huge comeback amongst teens. 80s wouldn't be a problem honestly.
Looking forward to its ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not everyone is ok with FIM, but the thing with that is that there are a ton of core G1 ideas at its foundation. It was also created by a fan of MLP. That means that, while it is different, it still retains a sense of the MLP.
The Jem Movie is none of those things. As for dolls, Hasbro have been making a mint from actual Jem fans with collector dolls for the last few years. Their age demographic is far more lucrative considering teen allowance vs proper income, and unlike the tweens, their loyalty is guaranteed.
There isn't any indication yet of dolls for the movie, just rumours, but if such a doll line could not compete longterm in the 1980s, it seems a pointless business model now. Hasbro have already used the whole Jem concept with EG Rainbow Rocks. Plus, the demographic for the movie is older than the doll playing age anyway. More informed people than me think Hasbro has a different sale target, but the movie was made at speed and with a limited budget.
Expecting the original fandom, many of whom grew up with Jem or who have invested time and effort in tracking down all the original cast, prototypes, artists, designers etc to just shut up and take it is, in my opinion, a bit disrespectful.

Yeah he probably said that he was a Jem fan in a weak attempt to shut fans up. He wouldn't have turned it into this if he had ever seen so much as a single episode

Ah, sorry :) I was so excited that they cast Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald. I thought maybe they would do something great with them in the cast (even with all the unknowns). Then I saw the trailer. The director said he was going to take fan suggestions. I doubt any real Jem fan is excited about this movie. Hollywood once again screws up something awesome from my childhood. Hollywood sucks :/

I finally worked up my courage to watched the trailer and now I desperatly wish I never had. They are destroying one of the best shows of the 80's and there is no chance in **** I'll ever watch that abomination.

We already have Hannah Montana. Why do we "need" this? The only thing that even resembles the original show, as far as I can tell, is the pink makeup. That's it. Oh, and the stolen title.

The only thing that qualifies as Jem is the name IMO. Other than that it doesn't look anything remotely like the original expect it involves females in a band.
The original story and plot are pretty darn solid I cannot understand why it would be changed into whatever that trailer is supposed to be.
It doesn't even look like a very good teenage movie either, it just sort of looks blaa.

It looks like you could change their names and it isn't jem related at all. Saying showtime synergy doesn't make her jem. Plus I heard synergy wasn't in the movie?

Amen! When they first announced they were doing the movie they talked about how much they loved the show and they were going to take fan suggestions. I think they were full of bologna ;)

Everyone on the movie is a professional actor or actress- even the ones that appear on the segment showing the "audition tapes."

I had heard that some ppl who sent in audition tapes did get cast as extras at least. Of course it's shady that they made it seem like they were looking for someone for the main roles and not a part of the faceless crowds.

Yeah- I don't care that they DID use actors and actresses- I think it was a good idea. But don't lie and say you are going to 100% crowdsource the movie when you have no intention of doing so. Shady.

I just looked at it out of curiosity and I can't stand it. Jem was about 80's rock and Jem was much older I believe in the series and now we're down to preteen early teens. I realize they're trying to make a new Jem for kids nowadays but it is a complete turn around, and not in a good way. If they wanted to do live-action they should have done it in the 80's or maybe even 90's.

I really wish they would have gone with a battle of the bands plot even though it's such a common trope. Just take the first 5-ish episodes of Jem, trim it down, and turn that into the movie. Then you would have the Misfits (and hey, you could throw in the Stingers while you're at it) and you could still easily tell the origin of Jem and Synergy while staying true to the show. Basically it would come down to Jerrica, Shana, Aja, and Kimber creating a band with the help of Synergy to earn money for the Starlight Girls and they have to win the battle of the bands to do so. Throw in some Misfits sabotage and other stuff and end the movie with Jem and the Holograms winning the battle of the bands and all's right with the world.

Blech the trailer is really awful and trashes some of my best childhood memories of Jem. Still I love the actress Aubrey Peeples who stars as Jem. It's a shame it didn't stay true to the original.

Some of those audition videos were really, really good, too. But people were so excited and thought a REAL Jem movie was being made... and that's what they reflected in their audition videos!
And then nothing came of any of that.

I feel they took everything out that made Jem outrageous, no Misfits no Synergy?! What the heck! With today's CG abilities(look at the marvel movies) Synergy could have kicked some serious ass.
I'm sad they made it for teens we don't need another coming of age remake we needed Jem!

I watched the trailer and GOOD GOD it looks like it's shaping up to be an abomination of a film. I'm pretty sure if all of the fans got together and made a movie it would be infinitely better than this... There are literally so many things wrong with it that I can't even name all of them....

Specifically this quote:
It is a hundred per cent true to the spirit of Jem, like 100%, and I think that people will be very pleasantly surprised. So in that way it's good - maybe lowering expectations is good. But I think people will be pleasantly surprised for sure.

I saw this trailer on Hulu and was... beyond disappointed. It looks just awful. I fail to see how this movie is anything more than tangentially related to the 80's series.

That trailer is the icing on the giant cake of disappointment. So much potential wasted. They could have done something amazing, that wasn't like every other thing they've done but no they went right back to their old standby instead of daring to try something different or staying true to the original series. So much fail.

I'm really annoyed at the "teen coming of age story" angle. One of the great things about Jem is that from the very start they are successful, confident WOMEN. They had the Starlight Girls (the orphans) for the teen plots, but for the most part it was about the adventures of women who were already a popular rock group.
Ugggh, why even use Jem's name for this.

While I think it's cool that they gave that 1990's webcam some new life as Synergy, this new trailer sucks just as hard as the first one.

Some of the rationalisations I've seen from Jem "fans" about this movie (ie, we should love it just because it's Jem) are really shattered by the promotion and the attitude towards the original. It is meant to be Jem for a new generation, which is really insulting to the new generation. It implies that they can't be anything deeper than self-absorbed teens looking at their own image because someone uploaded them to youtube.
I am not a fan of Jem, I've always been a Misfit, pretty much since I began collecting in 2001...but even though I don't like Jem herself, I feel she's been taken apart by this representation. Jerrica was at the very least driven to protect something important at the start of the series, however muddled and confused she became as the series went on. It doesn't actually begin with them being a successful anything. THe Holograms are formed in order to take back Starlight Music from Eric and the Misfits so that they can feed the foster girls, because the Starlight House is falling apart following Emmet's death. They learn about Synergy who helps Jerrica create a band to challenge Eric, and then winning the Battle of the Bands becomes a must because Eric's lackey burns their original house down. There are high moral stakes involved in Jem and the Holograms' beginning. Like I said, I'm a Misfit fan, but you can't fault the origins and the motivations behind the band being together.
By Starlight, I think they've been together as a band for a few months, but they're still growing, and again, the movie is in order to raise money for BaNee's eye surgery. Again,strong unselfish moral ground for taking part.
Jerrica had some serious identity issues by the end - running off with Riot without a word, creating a third persona to hide from Rio...and she does some really questionable things as the series continues, but it all began with the best of intentions, and it was none of it to seek stardom. It's probably the reason Jerrica became Jem, because Jerrica had no intention of being the 'star'.
And those intentions have been cheapened into starseeking teenage girls.
The film is probably fine. My one issue is that it's not a Jem film, and so shouldn't be piggybacking off the name of something far different.
Synergy's also one of my favourite characters, because she's obviously sentient and not just a machine. I haven't seen the second trailer, but I am actively disturbed by the mention of "robot". Synergy was the "ultimate holographic synthesiser". She wasn't a "robot".

the second trailer is SLIGHTLY better but definitely not going to see it, they made synergy into a Wall-E / EVE Hybrid. but I'm happy that they kept Emmet close to the original storyline

I almost cried when the first trailer came out. I'm not a hard core fan but that trailer HURT my 80's child.
The second one is slightly better, but not much. I'm still saving my money for the next Marvel Superhero movie. :)

Icey- for sure! I seriously LOVE these dolls and you would totally love them too if you liked the original Jem, they are as gorgeous and detailed as I had always wanted the Hasbro dolls to be. And their faces are so pretty ... (I love the Hasbro dolls in their way, but mostly for the packaging and outfits- their faces leave something to be desired)
I am not liking the looks of the movie, but I kinda hope they will come up with at least one Integrity doll who is wearing the jacket "Jem" is wearing in those promo shots. It's pretty cute.

Severely, severely disappointing :( I saw this post awhile ago, but I was afraid to watch the trailer. Well now I did and it is horrifying. If they wanted to do a Jem movie, they should have at least made it a period film that was set in the 80's and not changed everything about it. I love the cartoon. I'm going to pretend this movie doesn't exist and try to erase its horribleness from my memory.

I heard on the TF forums, that this hack of a director would like to do a TF/Jem/G.I. Joe universe movie. Okay, I did like his G.I Joe movie, it wasn't too shabby and a GI Joe/ TF movie would work if it was directed by someone else, but after what he did to Jem? No! Just no! Plus how would that even work? Especially with Miley Cyrus 2.0?

Critics tend to not rate teen movies well in general. Well of course cause grown people don't have the same perspective. High School Musical had a 5.1 and Descendants only did slightly better with a 6.

Another thing that's important from the old Jem that appears to be gone now is that at the time of the cartoon debut they were very few shows to show a strong willed and independent woman who doesn't need to be rescued or be helped by male characters in nearly every episodes :cool: the only other I can think right now is She-Ra
Unlike most other characters at the time for example April O'neil, Smurfette, etc

I was so excited when I first heard about the movie! I've grown up with the original animated series and own most of it (Swedish episodes) on VHS! Then when I realized the movie wouldn't be animated, I was slightly dissapointed. Then when I watched the trailer on YouTube a few weeks' back I was stunned. It was so bad I was seriously at a loss for words. In my eyes, that's not a Jem & The Holograms movie! It doesn't deserve to be associated with the amazing tv series...!

What I've heard from people who have seen it is that it's supposed to be a prequel. The Misfits do appear at the end. I'm worried trying to show their origin instead of jumping right into the story of the cartoon is going to hurt their chances of doing a movie that actually follows the cartoon.

The sad thing is I have read some positive reviews but it seems like a lot of people were set on not liking it before it even released.
Also now I'm worried the dolls won't happen which is a shame. I was really hoping for some playline Jem dolls that were more affordable than the Integrity dolls and as nice as the Descendants dolls. I could never get into the vintage dolls because their bodies felt rubbery and stiff.

I heard that also. Truthfully I had little interest in seeing this movie after I saw the trailers even though I really like the Jem cartoon. I would have liked to have had new Jem dolls also because I could never bring myself to get the vintage ones.

I went to see it last week, its second week out. And, I have to say I was expecting it to be really bad. I went with a fellow Jem Girl, who had not seen any trailers but is a huge fan since childhood.
Shockingly IT WAS NOT!!! The trailers do NOT do it justice! Yes. Its NOT the same as the cartoon I adore, but theres just enough similarities and shout-outs to the original for it to be fun. And the music was truly outrageous! I bought the soundtrack on iTunes that night (only because its not available as an actual CD, Boo).
I plan to see it again. I will buy the DVD. So, my advice is give it a chance and have an open mind. You may find yourself humming one of the songs from the movie instead of the tv show....

i had a co-worker who took her daughter to go see Jem since the daughter got hooked on the tv show when it was airing on the hub/discoverykids/whateveritscalled and she was rather disappointed in the movie.
her mom said that the Lizzie McGuire movie was better than Jem -snork-
