Title: How long is your commute to work or school?
Post by: SourdoughStomper on April 20, 2015, 01:53:07 PM
I stay at home. However, Mr. Stomper's work is less than 10 minutes away by car.

Youngest Stomper's school is a 7-minute walk. Eldest Stomper's school is 17-minute walk. (And yes, I actually measured how long it takes me to walk there. :lookround:) And Middle Stomper's school is just across the street. :)

Everything is pretty close to us. Pretty handy, that.

How's it for you? :bike: :ski: :sled: :ship:

20 minutes bus ride and 20 minutes walk, so a total of 40 minutes.

I'm currently unemployed, unless you count my volunteer work at our local church, which is about ten minutes away.

As for school, I'm homeschooled. It takes a whopping two seconds for me to get from my bed to my desk. :P

Depends on whether my bus meets the other one at the station or whether it just misses. If it just misses, it's a close shave getting to work on time >.>. But on a normal day, about 30 mins, if the bus behaves itself!

It's about a 10 minute drive to my highschool, sometimes less if I speed  I really love that because I have a one and half hour lunch period off from school so I can just go home and make my own lunches with my boyfriend!

In Ohio I drove 38 minutes to work and 35 minutes to college (opposite ways). I just moved to Virginia though and got a new job and although it's only 10 miles it takes me like 40 minutes to drive there most the time. :( I thought it was going to be better! In Ohio where I'm from the roads are 55 mph with no traffic and you can pretty much do 70 safely as far as cops go. Here the roads are 45 mph, there are stoplights galore, and a lot of traffic and too many asses who drive very slowly. Booooo.

Between 20 and 30 minutes usually.  Ironically, I spend most of my commute trying to get out of Mr. Skeen's parking lot after dropping him off!

I work an hour away from home.  It's not too bad of a drive.  It's a pretty drive, mostly in the country.  There are no jobs in my tiny town, so this was my only choice.  I get good enough pay and enough hours to afford the gas.  :)

Depends XD If I get a lift it's like ten minutes. If I get the bus I'm looking at an hour because the service is reduced at rush hour for some stupid reason from four buses an hour to two, and no they don't use the big buses at this time, either  So I finish  at 5pm and the next bus isn't until 5:34  -_- And the bus before that is at 4:30. Makes no sense/

I drive about 20-30 minutes to my job.  My fiance works in the city, so he take a bus downtown that way he doesn't have to worry about paying for parking, plus the government pays for his bus fare... yay working for the government!  Takes him about the same amount of time to get to his job as it does to get to mine.

We'll be moving this summer though, and from our house it'll take me maybe 10 minutes to drive to work.  It'll be around 45 minutes for my fiance though, even taking the bus.

Four minutes! If I rode a bike it'd probably be more like ten minutes. I only live about 2 miles away from work/school (I work at the university).

My last job, also at a university, was 20 minutes away, which was not bad at all considering it was in the middle of nowhere.

The commute to my college is a little over an hour for me each way.  It's not so bad because I can read or work on my writing or whatever because I take public transportation most of the way (though I do walk to the train station).

I feel bad though because I was kind of complaining about my commute to a girl who's in one of my classes and she told me her commute is 3 hours in the morning!!!!  Apparently coming home its not as bad, but still pretty crazy.  I have vowed to never complain about my commute ever again!

It depends - it's 6 miles south and in the winter the place is a ghost town but in the summer, it;s a tourist haven for people from NYC and Montreal.

If we drive it's about 10-15 minutes, because my work is further out than I live, so woot for always traveling the opposite way to traffic chaos! on the other hand if I get the bus, (like today, boo!) it takes at least 45 minutes. Stupid bus routes!

Mine is probably somewhere between 35-45 minutes to work. I used to live closer to my job, but I moved out to the country. It is much quieter and nicer, but winters there are really bad, cuz it is up in the mountains.

*quietly cries in the corner*
Usually it's 50 min... But traffic can tack on an extra 30 min if I'm extremely lucky
Next year the company is moving and it'll be an extra 25 min.... If there's no traffic. And I want to move 20 min south within 4 years.  I can't do it after that.

I hate driving with a passion. I won't drive anywhere but work. ); I love my job...

When I was in elementary school my bus ride was 60 min long. High school was at least a 50 min walk. D: I have always had a long commute!

My workplace is within walking distance... I think by car it takes a few minutes, although there are a couple of lights that can make it take longer.

A couple of years ago when I went to college, it was an almost two hour commute total there and another back home every day. So... Things have not always been so convenient for me.

It's usually 45 minutes if I leave at 530 in the morning. If I leave around 6 I don't get to work until around 730. If I leave after 630 it's about 2 hours to get to work... and it's only about 25 miles away. The joys of living in a DC suburb :)

It's about a 15 minute commute to work but I give myself 20 just in case when I leave in the morning.  In the summer if I have a closing shift I may leave a little earlier as traffic can back up with people going to or from the beach.  Other than that it's a pretty smooth commute, pretty views of the Columbia River.

During rush hours, it take me around 45 minutes to get to work, but, during light traffic hours I can get there in about 35 minutes.  We bought our house a bit further out from the city so we could be in a quieter suburb with more space.  I really like where we live, we're even thinking of moving a bit further out so we can buy land for horses!

..But I do sometimes envy those who have such short commutes to work/school.   :satisfied:

For my work commute I basically just walk across the road and a set of railroad tracks.  And it is a very rural area so traffic is almost non-existent.  I AM SO LUCKY.      My last job was only about a mile from my house so I could walk/bike that, too.   It is almost as if I am PLANNING these things (I am).

Starting in July I'll be working half-time at another location, about 30 minute drive.  But it will only be 2-3 days a week so not bad.  I'm looking into bus options to make it even better.     *reading comic books on the way to work is the best*

I go to college by train, if they ride on time it takes me a 5 minutes bike ride to the station, one hour by train and a 5 minutes walk to the university.  Then I need to wait like 20 minutes before the lecture starts due to the poor train schedule. If I take one train later I am always 5-10 minutes too late.

Door to door, it takes me about 75 minutes to get to the office. I live in SW London and work in NW, so I have to cross through central London to get to work and back. The area I'm looking in for a new flat is much closer to my office, so I'm hoping to shorten my daily commute by about an hour. :)

Well..... Since I work 5 jobs let's break it down as simple as possible. Full time job one way is between 15-20 mins depending on traffic in town. 1 part-time job is in the same builidng as full time job, so that's a 5 second walk. 2 part-time jobs are within 5 mins of full time job. Last part-time job is 10 mins one way from home. So overall the drive isn't bad, in town traffic can be the pits most days and winter weather days are the worst...

I currently don't have a job, but am on the lookout for one and wish to find one soon, so I can only reply with my previous experiences and future expectations. my previous work was 30 minutes away (with public transport), and that's about how much I am willing to travel to my future work as well. depending on location I might go a little further, but definitely nowhere that can't be reached within 40 minutes, and this already has to have enough counter-benefits, and has to be located at a place from where I can reach the city centre in max. 30 minutes.  I am not willing to spend more time with traveling, since one of the reasons for resigning at me previous job was a screwed up work-life balance and work interfering with my private life (=I spent too little time home. if I get to finish earlier but spend more time on the bus that's not really a step forward).

UMM well if my gf gives me a ride to the train... An hour and then 10 minutes of walking :p if I take the bus I end up waiting at the stop for anywhere between 10 min to 45, then a 15 minute bus ride, then train ride.. So yeah sometimes my commute is 2 hours lol.

Mine is zero, since I teach art classes from my home studio.  But my husband's commute is 40 minutes one way.  Which is why he commutes on a motorcycle.  If he commuted in a car, it would be over an hour one way.  No thank you!

But here in the Bay Area a 40 minutes commute isn't too bad.  Many people commute over an hour one way.  And I have friends who live in San Diego, yet her husband commutes up to San Francisco every week by plane.  (He rents a small room in SF and has a 4-day work week, then is home for 3 days).  Believe it or not, that was cheaper than continue to pay rent and live here closer to SF.

Work=unemployed and currently job hunting.

School= About an hour to an hour and a half. Depending on how the bus and light rail (subway) line up. If there are delays, it of course gets longer.

Am pretty good about getting around via the public transit. But as someone else said, I do draw the line at an hour commute via bus for work. When I was doing that, it was about half an hour. For a 3.5 hour shift. Yeah, there was no way I was going to spend more time getting there and back. Then actual hours worked per day.

Since my workplace is in the next town I go to work by bike from spring to autumn sometimes early winter depends on weather or by train and local bus/walk during the cold and snowy time period.

It takes for me about 45 minutes by bike going on the cycle roads but if I would go on the main road for a short time than it would be about 30 minutes. In winter when I can't go by buke it's about 90 minutes because the change.

I chose 30 - 60 mins as generally to get to work its approx 20 mins, sometimes a little longer, and approx 40 mins to 1hr home as the traffic is terrible. Im on earlies most days, so makes sense its quicker to get to work than coming back.

My old job I was literally 5 mins from home, hated it so much I didn't mind the commute to my new job.

I used to go by bike, which would only take me 20-25 minutes. But lately I combine the bus with a walk, and it's so much better! :D First I walk to the station (15 minutes), then I take the bus (10 minutes), and then I walk to my workplace (20 minutes).

All in all it takes me an hour (if you include waiting for the bus), but this is so much more relaxing. I don't arrive at my work all exhausted, I get more exercise because when I go home again I walk 45 minutes in one go (I have more time then of course), there's much more to see, like birds and trees, and this way I have some relaxing time before work. I only see good sides to it, but my collegues can't seem to give me a break.  :hmm: They always have to bug me about why I would do such a thing while there is a bus stop right in front of the building, and how "I do this to myself".
