Title: I learned to needle felt!
Post by: ZennaBug on April 01, 2015, 10:48:54 AM
I'm visiting my grandma in Indiana right now and she has recently picked up needle felting and I asked her to show me how.  I was going to make Vessa, but all of her spots intimidated me a little.  So I decided to make my newest pony character, Cherokee Rose, whose design I recently bought from gothicsugar.  :)  She's a super cutie who I haven't had a chance to really draw yet and my grandma had exactly the right colors in her big tub of wool.

(Original design by gothicsugar here:  http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,366601.0.html)

After about 5 hours of stabbing (and at least a dozen holes in my thumb), I was finished!

I probably should have started with something easier or used a pattern, but I wanted to make a unicorn!  XD  Those skinny legs, the horn, and her eyes were such a pain!  At one point, she was looking in two different directions.  Ack!  But I finished her around 1am and I couldn't be happier with her!  I decided that adding her braids would be just a little too squirrely, so I left them for now.

It's a beautiful day, so I took her out to get a better photo with good light.  :lovey:

And then my grandma had me take photos of every critter currently living on her mantle.  The pony is the only one I've made yet.  The others are by my grandma, various cousins, one aunt, and my sister.  :)

I want to make more now!  Next up will probably be a weiner dog for my husband's work desk.  :)

Aww Zenna, she's adorable! Great job for your first needle felted animal! I've only tried needle felting once and I didn't go for anything complicated, just some basic shapes, I think. Or was it a Christmas elf...?  :wonder: It's been years, I can't remember. Anyway, you did an amazing job on your pony. I love her soft hair!

I've never tried needle felting :)

That pony is so cute Zenna, she turned out perfectly

I hope your thumb recovers quickly ;)

Very nice!! I've tried a bit of needle felting- you're right on about all the stabbing required. I made two or three bunnies and my husky sky, before I got wrapped up in some other craft or another. Your pony is very well done!

Thank you guys!!  :lovey:  I love her.  :) :) :)

Last night, I made another critter.  There's an old woman named Mickey who lives just a couple houses down from my grandma's house in San Diego.  She and my grandma are great friends and hang out whenever my grandma is in town.  And whenever I'm staying there, she comes down to say hey to us too.  Ma printed out copies of all the pictures I took and said that she was going to send them to Mickey for her birthday on Sunday because Mickey loves the needle felt creations.  I decided to make her a bunny because her birthday is on Easter.  And then I gave it a sun on its backside because Mickey has a tattoo of a sun on one of her buttcheeks and will drop her pants for anyone who wants to see it, lol.  She's nuts.  XD

I stabbed my thumb HARD on this one, though.  I've got an entry and exit hole and everything.  All the way through the pad of my finger.  Ouchies!  So I am probably going to take a break from felting tonight and make a sock monkey or something instead and give my thumb a break.

Those are so cute! I love needle felted things but I've heard its done with wool which unfortunately I'm allergic to. :( Otherwise I'd probably have a collection either purchased or made myself.

Thanks!!!  :D  My thumb healed just fine, thankfully.  :silly:  Mickey loved her bunny and I've already got plans to make more critters when I have some time again.  With the thumb protectors the whole time, this time.  :P

Oh my goodness, Zenna.... that pony and bunny are so sweet. I'm especially fond of the bunny. Not only is it super cute, but I love how you personalized it for your grandma's friend. You are incredibly thoughtful.

Wow, Zenna, that's impressive for your first needle art critter! :D She's simply darling. I've only attempted needle art once, and made a really simple little hamster--though he's cute, he's certainly not as complicated as Cherokee!

Very cute!

I love needle felting ~ although, I've stabbed myself a few times with the needle. No fun.

Nice work!! I love the bunny, it is just way too cute for words! I'm also into needle felting but have mostly made smaller creatures, I've never attempted a pony. How did you felt the legs? I always have trouble with attaching feet and things like that to felted critters.

Thanks, guys!! :)

The legs were actually pretty easy. I wrapped the wool around the needle to make a long skinny shape and stabbed it a lot lol. Then I wrapped more wool around the shape over and over and stabbed it until it's the right size. Then I stabbed it into the body and did a quick wrap around he leg and body and stabbed that into he body too until it was solid. Took a while, but it wasn't too hard. I sort of just made it all up as I went along lol.
