Title: Any old school customizers still around? :)
Post by: nickeline on March 24, 2015, 03:20:34 AM
hi all--long time no see. I used to be pretty active on the customs boards in the early to mid 2000s, but wandered away around 2009 or so. I was wondering if any of the other customizers from that era are still around? Does PoniesYeah still post? Or Woosie? Or Kar_RedRoses? I see Roogna posted a custom recently--<waves> I remember ya from way back!

Say hi if you remember those days--hoping to find a few familiar faces still around :)

Hiiii, I remember your work!

PoniesYeah posts a new custom now and then, Roogna is active but I don't remember seeing Woosie or Kar_RedRoses around.

I hope others see this thread and can give a shout, I'm curious to how many customizers we still have from that timeline.

 :)

Kar runs the Big Apple Pony Con now...she was at the Nashville MLP Fair promoting it...but I don't think she's doing as much customizing of ponies. Woosie has retired.

*peeks in and waves*

I'm back to customizing, might still do some more marbled ponies but I dunno, it's VERY messy.

Anyone know what happened to Trillian or Faerie Lantern?  I know Trillian was a customizer and I have one of her Breezie customs.  I can't remember if FaerieLantern was a customizer as well or just a collector.

Fae was a custom moderator here for awhile, but stepped down when some hard times fell on her family, and required her attention. I don't think she's been here since.

I remember those days, but I'm a very slow customizer, so I doubt anyone would remember me! I probably posted two ponies in that time period! :P But all of those names are familiar to me, since I spent a lot of time reading the forum!

I was just thinking about your pony corsets tonight, they were so cute and unique! I hope you get back into customizing, it would be great to see more from you! ^_^

that is honestly kind of sad to see that people stop customizing when they were SO good at it.  It's like....they stop from their calling, you know?

*waves*  It's good to have you back though!  I'm not one of the old customizers, but I am glad to see one return!

I never achieved a skill or name recognition level as many of the other customizers mentioned, but I am still around.  I still customize, but don't really share my work on the boards or DA anymore.

I own customs by most of those original customizers.  Their work was next level, in my opinion, and I really miss seeing new customs from them.  So many excellent artists have come and gone...I miss Kanthaka, Albur-Lily, DianaArcuri, sammytvr, lovelauraland, woosie, Trillion, EPonyArt, bee-chan, DGRequiem, pop-girl, ebethalan, sweetlittlejenny, sprightly, dragonstar, aeracura, barkingmadd, and so many more.

I'm still around. Pretty much stopped customizing when FiM rolled out but I recently started up again. I dumped the name Eruna mostly... Meaningless and not memorable.  More active with my blog now.

Customizing for me is a hobby; I still do customize on occasion (I've got two in the works) but RL work takes precedence. Sometimes artists move from one creative outlet to the next. Nothing wrong with a change of pace/scenery/medium every once in a while. ;)

I still customize, but I realize I'm not all that good at it really, no one wants them.  Even when I give them as gifts they try and give them  back.  So I wonder if I should stop.

Oh no!!! Don't stop... The more you make the better you get!!!! I would love to get any custom as a gift and I don't ever give them back or get rid of them!!!! I hoard and love each and every custom I have!!!

Actually, I've noticed that the more I make the worse they get.  I've been customizing for about 10 years or so now, on and off.  I've only gotten worse, like my art has gotten worse.  I wonder if I should just give up on art too.  I have zero motivation for the stuff I like to do.

We all go through slumps... I didn't draw anything for a few years but do some now and end... I don't stay focused on one thing either ... I go from craft to craft. See if a change otype of crafting /artperks your interest back up.  Other than that I don't have any really good advi CE you can always pm me if you need to talk...

Oh wow! I just came back to this thread and was so pleasantly surprised to see so many responses and familiar names. <waves> So nice to see some of you are still around and also cool to know that some folks on here remember me from way back.

So, since I've been out of the customizing scene since about 2010, can anyone catch me up on how things have changed? Do people still do lots of g3 customs or is the emphasis on the FiM style nowadays? Anyone found any new great materials or techniques to use for customs?

Oh, and here's a few of my old customs, for folks who don't know me:

nickeline!! I love your work! I always wanted to add one to my collection. It's nice to see old school customizers poke their head in!
I still customize, but I swear I get slower and less motivated every year.

also OMG ERUNA!! I have ended up with both of your Alien ponies, and they are some of my favorite custom acquisitions! I am so happy to see you still occasionally customize

Hope this isn't too off topic... thought it might be okay since it's still discussing oldschool customs.

I own a few customs by (what I assume) to be old school customizers.  :) Lady Minty (Monkey Business) and Sevenbelles (Trick or Treat)... I wish there was still an archive of all their work! I also have a couple of customs I got around 2006(?) that I have no knowledge of who made them. If anyone knows who they are/if they're still around I'd love to know.  ^.^

These are NOT my photos, they're from the original auctions and I had them in an ancient photobucket.
I was quite young when I (begged mom to buy them) got these so I don't remember a lot about the auctions themselves.  ^^;

Onyx
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I remember her name and that's it. The tree lights up!

Spooky
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I think this one was named Spooky in the original auction... I don't know anything else about them.

I don't have any photos of the last custom I got in that time period but I'll try to describe her.
Similar to how Onyx has a halloween themed base she has a christmas themed one as well as a light up christmas tree. She's a pink G3 pony still with it's original butterfly symbol and I think it's original hair (she's packed away atm so I'm not sure) and she has huge blue sculpted wings. Her base has a magnet to attach her to otherwise the wings are too heavy and she topples over.

If anyone can properly ID these gals please let me know!

Jupi has to keep a close eye on them - she knows one day I'll sneak into her house and liberate one to come and live in my collection ;) Its wonderful to see you still make ponies! I've always loved your work!!

Nickeline, its so lovely to see you back!! Your Medusa custom has always been one of my all time favourite customs ^.^ I think the concept and execution are brilliant!

This thread makes me happy! Nickeline, I remember your pony stockings and iPods, I think i bought one of each for some customs I had worked on, I know I gave the iPod to my sister with a custom I made for her birthday. One of us still has it!

I remember all those old customizers too, I love their work. There are still some whose work I'd love to add to my collection! I made a few customs years ago, and participated in a number of custom swaps that were so much fun. I still have all my old customizing supplies too, and would love to get back into it. It's probably been almost 6 years since I've done anything, did university in that time and just haven't had the time or space lately to work on anything.

I wonder where some of my customs have ended up!

I've been customizing since 2005 but I didn't join the Arena until 2009. Some of the names listed here are very familiar to me. :) It's sad so many have retired, but I'm also happy to see quite a lot of us still hanging around, even if less active.

I remember most of those names, but I am a slow customizer, so I imagine no one's heard of me lol. I have noticed customizers have been coming and going back and forth over the years. Life is that way, especially as we all get older and have families and jobs, etc.

That said, I hope I'm always around, even if I'm not the most prolific customizer!

I'm still around off and on. Surprised to see my name mentioned,   thank you, though the rest of that list are people I remember and miss as well. They were some of my favorites. I do customs from time to time but have gotten verrry slow at completing projects. My inspiration runs a bit low nowadays. Especially with life's recent curveballs I actually had to back out of a commission. I'd like to get back into customizing but not everyone has the patience to wait forever for a project to be finished.
There are still a few customizers around though that I have to check out when I see their posts pop up.

Here are a couple of my most recent works.

Hi Jupi and Talismarr! Great to see you 2 still around :)

and thanks so much for the compliment on my medusa pony, Princess of Darkness :)

Someday soon I hope to get nickelinescustoms.com up and running again--just to have the pics there for posterity. I still have the domain, but some years back the database that runs the photo layout ran into problems and I never had the chance to fix it so I just took it offline.

Pretty much. As I understand it, and I could be wrong. it's been such a long time. She hit on some hard medical and financial times And I believe the death of a parent. She just couldn't devote any more time to ponies. She might have been burned out on them too.

I have no REAL talent. Nothing like is see and never really gained any popularity. I think i old sold my first two customers made which had been Black Beauty and Ginger set. Other than that most of my customs made had been for swaps and private trades. But I'm still here and have been since 2003 though not as much as I used to be due to be distracted with family life issues.

I've actually thought about slowly rolling back into and have some ideas inked up. But anyways!!

I remember quite a few like woosie and eponyart..but what about creampuff? Where is creampuff at !?!?!?

Here are some of the faves I've made:

nickeline! I miss seeing your work!
I haven't been on here for a couple of years sadly, I pop on to see what is going on sometimes but nothing more.
RL hasn't been very kind to me, I have all my custom stuff in storage because i'm living in a small room awaiting a job up North to join my husband (yes we have been living 300 miles a part for nearly two years only seeing each other on annual leave) thankfully I have given up waiting and gave in my notice last week to finally join my husband in two months and hopefully will be able to start back custom making and finishing some commissions (yes...my lovely customers who have been super patient with me and waited all this time)
its been hard but at least i'm now on the right track!
love to all who has to deal with that jerk called RL.

I actually was just looking at the customs in my display cabinet (since i am doing a general downsizing since I haven't been active AT ALL with ponies for years now) and reminiscing about many of the same customizers in this thread.....  as well as Nachlicht/Cookieten.....I have a rearing Gusty that is one of my prized posessions and will always be.  (as well as an alternate pose Moondancer and Glory...damn they look Hasbro issued!)

Thank you, sweetlittlejenny, you too x
Actually I was meaning to tell everyone on here that since I haven't been able to make my customs I have been instead writing a book, it's not pony based but it does have Mages in it so please check out my Instagram page for character pictures and the first 2 pages: LAURA._.CRANSTON
thanks x

Sorry to bump an old thread but I just looked in on this again and wow! So nice to see all the folks I remember from years ago! And glad to hear you are still doing your NYC ponycon, Kar!

Oddly enough the thing that led me back here is how bronies have really taken off in mainstream culture... I remember when I was first into ponies as an adult there were only a couple of guys on the boards. I wanted to come back here and see if the arena was all bronies now I guess :)

Oh, and btw, even though I don't make pony customs much anymore, I do have a new venture making upcycled fused glass jewelry. Check out the link in my sig of you're interested :)

cool earrings

I was never really into customizing *translation - I suck at it* but it was cool to see some oldies come back and post. I never left the forum, I just move across the planet every now and then.

I was just looking at my Trillion Luck Dragon the other day and wondering if I could bear to sell her.  She's the lovliest thing and I couldn't imagine not having her pretty purple self.

Funny to catch this thread after not poking my mug in here for.. ages, give or take a century ;)

I never was that big, or good or even active, I suppose, but looking at teh nemes in this thread, it feels like stepping right back in. Haven't done much customizing (partly due to a very persitent tennis elbow), but I have tons and tons of baits. So.. who knows what the future will bring.

For the past few years, I got drawn into 3D art (well, dabbling, really, can't call my stuff art), which also takes a lot of time.

Fun to pop in here again!

Oh god I'm familiar with so many names here because during that time period I was pretty much the supreme lurker on most MLP-related places on the internet, having never made an account as I was underage and didn't want to break the rules.... So I 'know' so many people, but they don't know me, which is pretty strange to think about...
