Title: Give a little whistle!
Post by: SourdoughStomper on February 23, 2015, 11:43:55 AM
When you get in trouble and you don't know right from wrong,
Give a Little Whistle, Give a Little Whistle.
When you meet temptations and the urge is very strong
Give a Little Whistle! Give a Little Whistle.
Not Just a little squeak, pucker up and blow.
And when your Whistle's weak, yell, "Jiminy Cricket!"

I tried teaching myself to whistle better when I was a teenager, with some decent success. I can whistle out a tune with medium-soft loudness. But I wish I could do one of those loud "call for the dog on the other side of the field" type whistles. Not gonna happen.

How's about you?

My whistle comes and goes. Sometimes I can whistle a tune with no problems. Other times I can't give a single whistling call to my dogs. Weird!

I can actually whistle between my teeth as well which use to get me in trouble as a child when I would whistle a song during silent reading time. I wouldn't even realize I was whistling until the teacher would ask who was whistling and walk up and down the rows looking for who was whistling. You can't see me do it so when I realized she was looking for me I'd stop and keep reading. I'm sure it made her angry but it wasn't on purpose I was just enjoying a book that needed some music to it. :/

Now I have coworkers that will randomly should across the halls "Fox you're whistling"

It took me a very long time (until I was a teenager) to be able to make any sort of noise. Now though I can make a nice noise and make a tune but not for very long.

I used to be able to whistle REALLY loudly but now I can only really manage a sort of soft whistle. I can do tunes though, usually whistling 'Taps' in a defeatist fashion before doing something I'd rather not do. :P

I can whistle a tune quite loudly and I love to do so.  I am not an amazing whistler or anything, but it does beat my singing voice.

As a kid, I could whistle awesomely.  4 teeth out and 2 yrs of braces, and that fixed that.  Sigh...

I can whistle tunes and very loudly.  It took me awhile to learn to do a regular whistle but every since have enjoyed whistling tunes quite a bit.  I can also do a really loud whistle for calling animals, getting peoples' attention or cheering  .   :accomplished: It took me until about 6th grade to learn it and the day I could finally do it, I couldn't stop myself most of the day and it started to annoy the friends with whom I was hanging.  It's the same loud whistle my mom can do and she tried for years to teach me and I finally got it.  I love being able to do it hehe.

oh my gosh, I have to tell you this:

My 5yo figured out how to whistle this summer. My 20-something sister CANNOT whistle. For Christmas, it was my 5yo's idea to give her aunt a whistle and a coupon for whistle lessons. OH MY WORD.

My kid is hilarious  :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I've tried for YEARS to whistle and can't.  Not one little bit.  My grandfather always tried to teach me and we finally settled on blowing on the sides of a thick blade of grass held between two thumbs.  It makes a whistling sound!  That's as close as I can get.

I also can't wink... at all.

Sometimes I can whistle, other times it sometimes happens or it doesn't (for those who have experience with reeded woodwind instruments, it's like trying to play one with a dry reed lol).

I can only manage a single, weak, pathetic whistling note.  However, I can pop my tongue REALLY LOUDLY, almost like a gunshot.  It's like an amped-up version of clicking my tongue.  I've met a few other people who could do it too, but I'm the loudest so far.

My best friend can whistle a tune really well.  She loves to do that whistling song from the beginning of Disney's Robin Hood.

I can whistle a few notes, but hardly ever a whole song. My mum whistles beautifully, but she cannot teach me, as she doesn't know how she does it. She simply does!

I'm always fascinated by people who can't whistle or snap their fingers. I just take it for granted that I can do it and its like someone telling me they can't blink. I wonder what the science is behind it?

I would die without my "dog-call" whistle. I have a very specific sound I use to get my kids' attention if they are running too far away to hear me yell for them to come back. I know it sounds like a rude way to communicate with my kids but they are RUNNERS.

I can whistle pretty loud, and whistle tunes. I can whistle by both exhaling and inhaling as well! My siblings can't whistle at all though. They would blow harsh sounds through their lips and call it a whistle, then get mad when I told them it wasn't or if I ever whistled for real around them.

I can whistle loudly, but not well. I never could whistle the proper way of blowing out. I suck the air in to whistle. I rarely do it, though. When out and about and I hear someone whistling or humming, it grates on my nerves. I find it rude to do either in public because no one else wants to hear someone making annoying sounds.

I can whistle both loudly and I can whistle any tune I want to  (...but I cant do a wolf whistle lol :P  )  don't ask how I can do it cos I have no idea, it just happens naturally  :relaxed:

Nope.

I can make sound but its air passing through.  If the whistle did come out, I would know how to pitch it  for sure.

I can whistle a tune (though sometimes off key, lol) but not very loudly. I also can't do those loud dog call whistles.

I was a relatively late learner, I think I was around 12 when I got bored with the fact that all my classmates seemed to know how to do it and I couldn't. I practised until I could make a sound and then gradually learned to whistle tunes.

I can whistle tunes loudly. It took me a long time to learn how to whistle properly. I tend to whistle without realising it :P

I can whistle a tune at a decent volume, but not crazy loud.  I can't wolf whistle though, and I've always wanted to be able to.  I just can't do it, no matter how many youtube videos I watch to try to teach myself, LOL!

I'm a chronic whistler   I'm one of those annoying people who often whistles around the house, esp when I'm doing dishes   I find this topic amusing as my eldest daughter is trying terribly to whistle at the moment and it's just not happening for the poor dot!

My fav game is whistling theme tunes from movies and getting my kids to guess (they love it)... and there is a devilish amount of fun in whistling theme tunes from more classic films that people recognise but can't quite place. I especially love taunting my husband like this - I'm so mean

I can't do SUPER loud whistles, but can whistle fairly loudly and can whistle tunes! I mostly just tend to whistle odd notes instead of proper tunes though. I also use a loud, short, single-note whistle as a noise of frustration around a certain friend. I imagine it like the beep of an annoyed robot, lol.

Say, can anyone whistle by inhaling too? Oddly, that was how I first learned how to whistle as a kid. It's not very loud and you can't do tunes, only short noises.

I can whistle very loudly, but no tunes. I can mimic some bird sounds but only right after I heard it, and when I whistle for my dogs it tends to call everyones dogs and the whole neighborhood starts barking :P

I can whistle, and can even whistle a tune, however I can't whistle at all if someone else is whistling, even if its someone I'm just hearing on the radio/tv/computer. For some reason I've never been able to do that no matter how much I've tried.

It surprises me how many people can't whistle!

I can whistle but what I would LOVE to be able to do- is to put my fingers in my mouth and make one of those piercing shriek type whistles- you know, when people hail a cab on TV or at a sports game?  I want that!

My dad taught me to whistle when I was a kid. BUT - I could only whistle while breathing in for the longest time. I didn't learn to whistle while breathing out til I was about eleven or twelve.

Apparently the adults in our road were quite amazed by my reverse whistling  but I didn't know it wasn't absolutely normal!

It's quite good though - I can just whistle on and on and on, without stopping to take a breath in, cos I can carry on whistling as I breathe. It probably gets quite annoying for the poor people who have to listen to me though.

My grandma who I loved a lot and passed away had a Pinocchio vintage music box with Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket on it that played that song and it was the only one in the room where I got to stay when I visited so that's a special song to me. I named my shop GreatFindToys on Etsy.com because she was from a place called Glens Falls so I call it GFTOYS for short :) As a kid she was the one who often besides my parents bought me care bears, a my little pony and more. I miss her and I'm glad my shop is called that to appreciate her and I love that song! Wonderful lyrics!
