I have seen so many options these days, I am curious what people here do. There is this new fad I have seen using stick-like decorations and a few years ago the fad was bows. I like angels and my mom likes Santas. In fact, I had never had a star until I got married since that is what my ex-husband's family used.
I loved the Precious Moments angel we had as a kid but my mom got rid of it :( . My boyfriend's family uses an angel. We have so many trees though. My Disney tree has Tinkerbell on top and our "toy" tree has EAH Cupid on top because we couldn't find anything else to top it that fit the tree and would stay on. I think she looks cute.

We have a beautiful silver star.
-
Staryu.

I haven't got a tree this year because the little purple one I had last year was a hand-me-down that had seen better days. For its last hurrah though, I covered it in pink, green and blue tinsel with matching baubles and a really tacky transparent green mantis Xenomorph toy on top; the pinsers were wrapped around the top branch of the tree to keep it from falling off. It looked rather groovy!
The childhood tree topper was a really creepy cardboard angel with a plastic doll head on it; I've not idea where it came from or where it eventually disappeared to, but it was a relief to see the back of that horrible little thing! XD

We use a plush of the invincibility star from the Mario games. I plan on making a perler bead version of it that lights up, though. Maybe next year.
-
Star on my tree. (actually two stars this year, one below the other)
Growing up, my parents' tree had a spire. At some point it broke and they replaced it with a small star, but my brother and I found a new spire for them a few years later in a funny little old fashioned store in the city where we went to college.
-
I put a Cross with a star on it on my tree. I love the classic Bible story of the shepherds and the baby lamb.
-
Growing up we always used a star which I prefer but currently we are using an angel....mostly because it was free. :P It is very pretty I just like stars better....but what I really want is a Bumble tree topper from Rudolph. I have searched high and low but I guess they don't make them. I have been thinking about making one myself but I don't want it to look tacky so I haven't attempted it yet.

I have a 24K gold encased maple leaf that we put at the top of ours. :)
-
I have a star, but I've also seen people using santa hats.
-
Santa tops our tree. We have a delightful tin (or similar) ornament that I bought years ago, and he's had pride of place each year ever since :)
-
We have a greyhound angel on our tree :) My mom got it a few years ago when we fostered greyhounds :)

I have a 24K gold encased maple leaf that we put at the top of ours. :)
Oh I am so jelling right now XD. :p
-
Since we live by the beach we put a starfish on top of our tree :)

That sounds beautiful! Do you have a pic? :)

A star with a big bow around it.
-
My parents used to have a little angel to put at the top of the tree, but we haven't had anything on the top of the tree for many years.
My little MLP tree has Twilight Sparkle at the top, though. lol
If I decorated a tree by myself (aside from that little one) I'd probably opt for a pretty bow or something like a snowflake.
-
An ancient light up star. We've had the same one since before I was born, and I will NEVER get rid of it, I love it to pieces.
-
We have a golden Christmas tree tip, I don't know how to say it in English. Looks a bit like a cone.
-
Well usually I have an angel one of my sons made at nursery but when I unpacked the Christmas decorations I couldn't find it. So ours is untopped this year although it's probably a good job as the tree we got only just fits with about half an inch to spare below the ceiling. :/
-
We have a red spire.
-
Both of my trees have a bow because i couldn't find the best topper! :)

Our tree theme change each year. Sometimes it's santa or a fancy feathery topper. This year it is the Lego star. It took me an hour to make it. I have minimal skills (had to put holes in it so that the light shows through).
-
we have a beautiful silver bird with a white feathery tail <3
Its one of a 4-set of birds. Its not meant to be a tree topper but we like one of them just sit there. The bird-set is old, my parents had it since I was a litte child and handed it to me when it got old-fashioned. But I still love it :)

I have a fairy treetopper made by Hallmark that my mom got for me...let's see...I believe around 7 or 8 years ago. But she's all dressed in pale blue, and looks like an ethereal angel. At least that's what I pretend she is! Growing up we always had an angel on the top of our tree.
And then my girls all have stars topping their trees.

I alternate different sets of ornaments every year, so the top of my tree depends on what the "theme" is! This year it's a simple glittery star to match my glittered ornaments. BUT- I do have a really wonderful peacock tree topper for my "bird" themed tree. It's pretty glorious. I accent with real peacock feathers and it makes the top of my tree look like a birdy disco.
I'm a real fan of unique tree toppers, though. I came across this picture and now I want one!

We have a fairy on top of our tree :) she knitted in a folk art style. She was super cheap as she was coming unraveled so I bought her a fixed her up.
Love pkw xxx

Normally I have a star. This year I found a kitchy vintage angel at a thrift store that I used. I absolutely love and will use it for years to come.
-
We put a multi-colored light up star on the top of our tree.
-
We have a beautiful blonde angel wearing a blue velvet dress with golden stars. We've had her ever since I can remember, and I love her. :)

I am SUCH a nerd.

I actually made the topper myself from a TARDIS cookie jar, flexable lighting strips, and a few other parts. So I can say it was handmade with care.

We usually put a star on and my mom has an angel that she likes to put up. This year we just had the angel, dunno what happened to the star lol.
-
We have a fairy on top of our tree (she's really old.. I know she's older than me, I think she's about as old as my mum as well but idk).. when we can find her, that is. ^^;; Couldn't find her this year, so we just didn't have anything on top of the tree. -shrug-

A glass spire. Though this year I got a potted "room-tree" which is about the same height as the spire.
