All done!  :)

Arena’s swap requirements:

http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,309316.0.html

This swap is for plushie enthusiasts! Some sewing skill is required, whether it be by hand or on a machine, but you don’t have to have made a pony specifically before.

Important Dates :

Sign-ups: December 14 through December 29
Reference checks: Ongoing through December 29
Partner assignments: On or before December 31

Check-in: January 31  (PM me photos of your progress at this time)

Spoiler
I reserve the right to deny entry into this swap to anyone not meeting the minimum requirements.

General requirements:

All members must be 16 or older.
Must have at least 1 feedback for swaps of any kind, and at least 10 feedbacks total.  I will accept feedback from other sites.
No negative swap feedback
Shipping within the US must be trackable.  If you are overseas your postal receipt will be fine.

Before we begin:

Fill out the following form and PM it to me.  Put “Plushie Swap” in the title so I can keep organized.

Arena name:
Email:
Real name and address:
Can you ship overseas?

Link to examples of your work:

Ponies you would like as a plush (no more than 6.  Please keep it limited to Hasbro ponies of any generation):

If your partner can crochet, would you prefer a crocheted pony or a standard sewn plushie?

Would you care to receive a non-traditional style of plushie, i.e. pony loaf, round pony puffball, etc?

(I will try to partner up people who would like crochet with people who can crochet, and people who would love a non-traditional pony with people who can sew alternate styles, but if the numbers do not favor this type of pairing you may not get exactly the type of pony you’re most hoping for.)

Are you allergic to any materials or pets?

Do you have pets or smoke in your sewing area?

Is there anything you would NOT like to receive?
(This swap does not require extras to be sent.  You may send extras if you wish.  If you don’t want things like confetti in your swap package or if you have allergies to anything make sure you tell me. )

When I receive your forms I will begin background checks.  When you are cleared I will let you know via PM, and put your name in the official participant list in the swap thread.  Your partner will be assigned via PM on or before December 31.

You will have a month before the check-in.  When you PM me on the check-in date, please provide clear pictures of your work at that time so that I can see your progress. You do not have to be finished or even nearly done at this point.  Please do not miss the check-in date.  I will send you your partner’s address at this time.

You must be cleared to ship before you do so.  This ensures that there are no flakers who drop off the face of the earth after receiving their packages.  Once you are cleared, you must ship by the shipping date and PM me the tracking number for your package.  Overseas participants, a scan of the postal receipt will suffice.  You do not have to purchase expensive tracking.

PM sent!  :)  I love plushies so much and I can't resist lol.  I'll have to go out looking for a pattern that I like now!  I think I'll wait to make sure I'm in and then see what my partner likes.  I haven't sewn a plush in a zillion years, but I can sew most anything else, so I am confident that I can make something cute.  ;)

Oh, go on then!  XD  We'd love to have you!

ZennaBug - I can recommend dolphinwing's pattern, definitely!  She's made patterns in all sizes from filly/colt up to Celestia, and they've all gone together like magic.  That's the pattern I use on all my plushies!  Modified, of course.  ;)

What's the best fabric to sew with?  Minky is so soft, but is it easy to sew?  I have worked with fleece a ton and I love it, but I really want to make something soft and awesome.  :)

Yay!!! I'm in.... Can't wait to get started... so excited LOL... I love making plushies though I've not made a huge amount. :)

I've only sewn with felt up to this point but I hope that I get a partner who wants a crochet pony as I want to try my hand at that....

Minky is AWESOME.  It's a bit stretchy, and the stuff at Joann Fabrics is even moreso, but it's easy to get the hang of.  If it gives you trouble, you could try a walking foot/plaid matcher for your machine.  I have one and it's the best thing I've ever gotten for my machine.  Makes sewing minky blankets a snap!

Minky is... decent to sew. It can be very temperamental, and has a lot of stretch so you need to be very watchful of your pile direction. I use it all the time, and while I love minky, sometimes I want to just burn it because it can be frustrating lol. It likes to slide, so you'll need tons of pins. It's worth it though for the final look and feel. There is a definite learning curve with minky, and every color has it's own personality for some reason! A good place to get minky is www.fabric.com and they do ship international.

and it sheds.......god the shedding!

Wondering if you sandwiched the minky between tissue paper would make it less slippery, easier to feed into the machine?

Probably worse, because it's when 2 pieces of minky are pressed together is what slips. Just used a ton of pins. ...though when it comes to embroidering minky, using stabilizer top and bottom is a must.

And yes, minky is horrible for shedding so be sure to clean your machine often!

See, I never use top stabilizer on my embroidery.  We have the same machine, right?  SE-400?  I just buy those 8x8 pre-cut squares and spray on some adhesive.  What kind do you use?  I have found that if I'm having problems with my embroidery I either loaded the bobbin backwards or I forgot to change to a needle with a bigger eye.  I have done both an embarrassingly high number of times.  -_-

Seriously, the best advice I have for sewing with minky is the plaid matcher/walking foot.  It feeds the top fabric at the same time as the feed dogs grab the bottom fabric so both layers go through the presser foot at the same time.  I still pin like crazy though.  Can't be too careful with minky.  ;)

I've often said I need a clean room for when I work with Minky.

I just bought new pins (the huge long ones!) because you can never have enough.

With minky, I use a top stabilizer--the one that washes away, I think it makes a lot of difference (I have the PE770). I never wash it, though, I just press a hot, wet washcloth on it. It's like magic :) My 5yo loves to watch.

I am curious about the foot you're talking about--I want to get a few different feet, and the walking one might have to go on the list ;)

Check out my machine after last Christmas' sewing marathon:

LOL  That's pretty much what my entire floor looks like right now.  I just decided to wait til I'm done with everything before vacuuming, because I'll just find another tumbleweed of minky fluff the second I put the sweeper away.

The walking foot I have will fit your PE770, I think.  It's a Brother model number and it just goes on in place of your normal presser foot.  It uses the needle shaft to work the arm that presses the teeth down.  I saved the packaging so I'll check it out and let you know.

I am pretty sure that already own a walking foot. I've used it for quilting. And if not, my mom does I know. I can always use her machine. I may try to whip up a quick plush with fleece to make sure I have the right idea before I try with a more challenging fabric lol.

Walking foot.  Which is actually a plaid matcher.  It does fit the PE770, but isn't that model an embroidery-only machine?  You wouldn't use it for that, just for sewing.

Yeah, that's the one. I know I've used them for quilting at my grandma's house and my mom's house. I just don't know if my own sewing machine has one. It's a hand me down and I haven't used it much lol. I think I remember a walking foot being in the box of random stuff my mother in law gave me with the machine, but I can't remember for sure.

PE770, the big brother to the 400. I use stabilizer on top because if I don't, the minky fluff will show through the stitching. It also helps keep the material from moving in the hoop. I think the difference is that with yours, a square 4X4 hoop holds much more steady than a rectangle 5X7 hoop will. More surface area means more to shift around. I use Sulky cut away (or sticky if I can get it) on the bottom and tear away on the top.

As for needles I use Brother needles that I bought in a box of 100. I've never had to change them because of the eye size, I only ever use the one type, though I switch out the needle often because they dull SO fast. Are you using different types of thread? I am strictly madiera for the embroidery thread and brother brand bobbin thread. I found the machine does not like ANYTHING but the official brother bobbin thread.
Title: Re: 2015 Plushie Swap! SIGN UPS OPEN
Post by: Skeen on December 17, 2014, 01:25:43 PM
Ah, I had considered the 770 but I needed a sewing machine too so I went with the 400.  My hoop isn't a square though, it's actually something like a 6x5 rectangle.  It only sews 4x4 but the hoop itself is surprisingly large.  I got a small 2x3 hoop for tiny bits but haven't used it yet.  I buy 8x8 precut tear away squares on Amazon, I think it's about $8 for 100 of them.

I only use large-eyed needles when I use metallic or plastic embroidery thread, like for glitter symbols or TE's.  It's supposed to keep it from breaking but what would really help is if I could set the stitch speed slower.  My needles never seem to dull but I do change them fairly frequently. I just buy the Dritz ones from one of the local sewing shops.  Depends on what I'm working on for what size/tip I use.  I use whatever thread is the color I need, mostly rayon or polyester, with cotton for sewing.  The machine doesn't care what I toss in the bobbin case, though I match my bobbin and top threads just because.  Actually, my machine doesn't seem to care what I use or ask it to do so long as I drop my bobbin in right - I've done it backwards plenty and then it pulls up through the top of the embroidery.  You'd think I'd know by now.  I still have the original spool of bobbin thread that came with the machine.  I don't know if I've ever used it.  I usually get my emb thread online in giant spools and they last quite a while (except black and white, I go through a lot of those).  It's poly, but I like the sheen on rayon better and have a lot of smaller spools I've gotten locally.

Bobbin caps are the best things ever though.
Title: Re: 2015 Plushie Swap! SIGN UPS OPEN
Post by: Tilas on December 17, 2014, 02:14:35 PM
You match the bobbin and the thread for embroidery? Bad idea. The bobbin is usually a different tension, and using the top thread can mess with that and cause problems in the stitch. It's fine for sewing, but for embroidery, especially because of the speed the machine is going,  using proper bobbin thread is a better idea.  Moreso, embroidery thread is expensive, and you're just wasting it if you're using it in the bobbin.

The 770, being embroidery only, demands the special bobbin thread, as that's what it's made to take. Also, being embroidery only is why I don't need to switch needle sizes.

Personally I don't care for all-in-one machines, just too much to go wrong with them.  Also it's much less hassle to not have to swap out threads constantly if I were to go from embroidery to sewing. But then, I'm very particular about my machines and what I use. Sorta got everything drilled into my head from my upholsterer father LOL.  If you ever decide to buy a sewing only machine, go for Pfaff. Best you can buy. I have an Ambition (all fancy computerized) and a Select (simple old school).

I'm glad I just satin stitch and applique everything. I don't think I could cope with an embroidery machine!

i'd be ok with something other than a plushie, like a blanket or cushion, if it has the ponies listed on it, and made just for me, i'm happy.
if fact a blanket or cushion would be an awesome addition. hmmm i love plushies too, but my #1 fav is something i don't have. so plushie, cushion or blanket, is good for me.
(idea of a pony quilt *drools*)

5 dogs
3 guinea pigs

sorry. i like ponies, but puppies over ponies any day. (falls off chair with possibility of awesomeness)
oh but i'm happy with a pony too. XD i love the ponies i listed, but with the other ideas floating around, thought it was worth mentioning.

I would prefer a plush, but I myself wouldn't mind if I had time like I did last year making my partner a pony and matching scarf or something small To go with the pony.

You brave souls! I wouldn't want all the minky on my floor or my rats in it either. I an only imagine the mess!  Also, yeh my dogs would destroy a toy in like five minutes.

I have a dog who is occasionally allowed to have a stuffed toy. (but it might get here and I'm too in love with it to see it destroyed by him...which it would be). he's a 66lb shepherd/husky mix.
I also have an old, crotchety rat lol, who would also destroy a stuffed animal
and a tarantula that doesn't need anything :P

so, I don't need pet stuff ;)

Is it too late to fit me in the swap. I have been experimenting with my Pinkie pie 25th anniversary pattern. I took apart my old plush a while back after getting a new one to sleep with.

It will not be difficult to sew one for this swap. Just about any color and or any material. Personally I love denim and have been really wanting to make one out of blue gene material

Sign ups are through the 29th so you can still send in an application.  Make sure to include a link to your work and other feedback source, as i see you don't have enough here.  Also make sure one of the feedbacks is for a swap of some kind!  ;)

My kitty is afraid of cat toys!

O.o  This I have to see!

I've tried with various things, but she runs away :( she doesn't respond to catnip either (but not all cats do) she does have two tiny floral mice, but she treats those more like teddies than things to try and kill! Bless her

Yay, I'm in!

Again, there's the talk of the walking foot, and again, I really want one but it's almost $100 for one for my Mom's machine, which is the one currently in use.  I'll have to set up Grandma's Kenmore that she left me.

To answer the questions:

do you have any critters? would a small plush or toy made for them be a fun addition?  I only have a fish and he's not that into plushes or toys.  ;)

Spike the Dog?  would actually be cute but I think I'd prefer something more pony themed.

Non Plushie?  I don't actually mind if it's plushie or not, as long as it's cute and made for me, it's all good.

so excited!!! just a little while longer till we get partners. woot!!
gonna try and get a few other projects done before that.

excited though. next weekend i'll be cleaning and finally setting up my sewing machine. (my mom brought it home from work one day)
*bounces off walls* gonna finish the other handsewn items while i wait.
have two plushes i want to try with the sewing machine before i make my partner's with it. plus new patterns.
so many possibilities.

dear future partner- are you ok with a pony plush that's not in the standard g4 standing pose?
-my answer yes of course. i love variety, the only downside it's i'm a gotta catch them all type. XD

LOL  Contain yourself, Rosier.  XD

And, I don't care what pose my plush is in.  One of my favorite that I've made was a Lyra sitting as she does, so I am certainly not opposed to variety.  :)

Annnnnnd, it just occurred to me I'm the one assigning people.  I guess I had better start giving it some thought, hadn't I?

No toys for pets please, I don't have a dog at the moment - unless you want to give a gift for my flat mate's dogs, they love anything with no stuffing ie. roadkill types. Their favorite toy ever is a non-stuffed toy like this (http://www.biltema.fi/fi/Vapaa-aika/Kotielaintarvikkeet/Koira/Koiranlelu-49138/).

I have no preference over the pose, as more dynamic poses can be fun, too! :D

I don't have a preference of pose.  I know that different people do different poses and I don't want to limit my partner's creativity.

Well, Skeen, you better get yourself a large cup of Joe and start thinking.  :awake:

Yes, and I only sleep when I get too much blood in my caffeine stream.

I just spent 2 hours digitizing symbols and eyes on the off-chance I get paired with someone who picked those particular ponies.  My butt is asleep and my contacts are sticking to my eyes.  See how I sacrifice for you!  XD

I still haven't got my sewing machine back. I know its christmas but

I'm super stoked! Can't wait till we get partners (sets up coffee IV for Skeen...). And to hopefully answer what questions have been asked so far:
I have 2 cats & a dog (and 2 possums, but they're just temp. residents.) The dog tends to de-stuff her toys after awhile, and the cats are iffy with their toys. But anything with catnip will entertain them for a little bit.

I'm ok with non-plush things as extras, but would prefer to get a plush as the main swap item. On that note, I do not expect extras in my package. I know not everyone is able to do so, I may not be able to do extras because of work. But we'll see.

And non-traditional style/pose plushies are fine in my book! I love the variety of things people on this forum make, it always amazes me just how diverse everyone's styles are.

You know it's going to be an exciting swap when the questions start before the partners are out.  XD

How do you feel about receiving other forms of sewn crafts?  I love all sorts of crafts, but I'd rather have a plushie in a plushie swap.  :)

Do you have any critters? Would a small plush or toy made for them be a fun addition?  I have 3 doggies.  :)  The two doxies are destructive little natural disasters and anything that comes into the house is destroyed immediately.  My furball mutt is a sweetheart who loves to snuggle plushes, but the doxies always end up stealing and disemboweling the toys when she's not looking.  Poor thing.

Are you ok with a pony plush that's not in the standard g4 standing pose?  Yes.  I'd probably prefer it, actually.  I love floppy squishy snuggly plushies most of all.  :)

hmm a few other general questions.
how do you feel about-
yarn hair-
brushed yarn hair-

ribbons- tail etc.
should the plush style match the generation or is it free for all-

i prefer brushed yarn hair, except for a few of my oc's where the regular unwound yarn looks like cute curls.
hmmm not a huge ribbon person, but if it adds to the pony go for it.
free for all, for sure!

I'm going to add this post to my sig, so you can keep track of answers in one place, partner.

extras for pets? not necessary

yarn hair- sure! I use yarn hair myself :)
brushed yarn hair- also sure!

ribbons- tail etc. ribbons for hair? sure. ribbons *in* hair, also sure if it fits my pony  :P

should the plush style match the generation or is it free for all- free for all! mine were all g4 ponies, but you can do any kind of shape or gen pony plushie thing.  :bigups:

2 mini plush? or plush and scarf?
I'm fine with just 1 plush, but if you make 2 that's awesome. just don't feel like you need to. size doesn't matter at all (I bought a super cute crocheted plush of my OC this year that fits in the palm of my hand. adorable!).
I do wear scarfs in the winter, but I have one custom scarf with my OC on it and I don't wear it -I just keep it in my pony room lol  :P so, uh, focus on plush please :)

beanie? floppy / squishy?
sure. I do prefer that there's *some* stuffing and that it's not *entirely* beanie ;)

Yay! got mine and one of them is on my own to-do list anyway, so... BRILLIANT!

I like brushed yarn hair, and I love ribbons, charms and accessories! Plus I don't mind rainbowfied versions, or alternate versions, etc etc. Standing, sitting, floppy is fine, fur mane is fine, I dont like fleece all that much though. Any gen mix up is fine.

I'm ok with yarn hair and brushed yarn. I don't mind ribbon in the tail or mane, but I wouldn't want it just out of ribbon. I actually think a ribbon mane/tail would tempt my rats to run off and gnaw on it.

I don't really want any material or hair that sheds much though.

My pets don't need anything they would just destroy it in like five minutes.

I prefer just plush be it two smaller ones or one big one. I make my own scarves. :)

Ummm lets see if I got everything.

If I get to pick a preference I prefer Gen 1, but I also like some styles of the G3 plushies. I'm really not a G4 fan, but I won't flip out and go crazy if I got a G4 based plush.

Last year I got the person I made one for. Skeen was super sneaky like that. ;) :P

extras for pets? I only have a fish, so no thanks

yarn hair- sure

brushed yarn hair- sure

ribbons- tail etc. ribbons for hair? sure

should the plush style match the generation or is it free for all- free for all!   Free for all is fine, whatever you're most comfortable making

2 mini plush? or plush and scarf? I'd prefer no scarf unless the plush can wear it (I won't) but I prefer my plushed to be cuddle sized if possible, but if that's not possible, partner, no worries

yarn hair- Go for it!
brushed yarn hair- I think it would looke awesome, though I know from experience it is time consuming.

ribbons- tail etc. - Ribbons for hair? Could be cool looking. Ribbons in hair is perfectly fine (as in mixed in with other 'hair' fibers, or tied in bows).
should the plush style match the generation or is it free for all- I'm good with any style, so alternate gen style is cool.

2 mini plushies or 1 big and extra: Either or is fine with me :)

I know what plush I'm doing, I just need to see what I have for fabrics. If no one hears from me in a while- you may want to come looking for me... I may be lost in my fabric stash. :P

Well, I got distracted and embroidered all the Dazzlings while trying to decide which one from my partner's list I want to do.  I also counted my minky stash - 49 different colors.  I was a little surprised, but not really.  I also reorganized my fabric bins, sorted and labeled my patterns, and neatly ordered my projects that are embroidered and cut but not sewn.

I miiiiight be procrastinating a little.

I think the procrastinating helps the process, honestly. If you're trying to work something out in your head, you can't have chaos around you. Working through your sewing supplies with your hands will help you :D Plus maybe two more pots of coffee!

After a trip to Joanns, I have supplies! I had difficulty finding the color yarn I was looking for...I had settled for something not quite right...then, on my way towards the front of the store, I saw the color I needed on an endcap lol!

The bad news is my sewing machine broke today, it's being taken to the repair shop tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear that your machine is broken, I hope it's a fast, easy and cheap fix.

This kind of seems in poor taste after pkw's news but I just got Grandma's old Kenmore up and running and even got a walking foot (for $20 as opposed to the $100 cost for the one for Mom's Bernina).  I even was able to fix the foot pedal.  It only had two speeds- paused and super fast.  Turns out it just needed a bit of a bend in a bar inside the pedal.  Yay!  So, after trying to figure out stitch length, thread tension (top and bottom) and even presser foot tension, I think I'm good to go.  This little machine is so different from Mom's Bernina that I've always sewn on, stitch length range from 6 to 24 with a Green Zone, and then there's some auto stitch stettings for some things and 0 is after 24???  I'm used to 0-4 for stitch length and the rest pretty much stays the same for the few different stitches I use.  Anyway, I now have my own sewing machine.

Daaaaaaang, Uninu! You're awesome. I am still trying to choose a pattern. I am so excited for my partner though and I know which pony I'm going to make. :) :) :) Once I choose the pattern, I'm going to do a test run and then a real one.

Yarn hair or brushed yarn hair?  Honestly, I will be happy with whatever you think best suits the plush. I do like soft hair that's not totally out of control. But I'll leave that decision up to you. :)

Ribbons- tail etc:  If you want! My favorite ponies are all G1 anyway, so that would suit them if you want to include them. :)

Should the plush style match the generation or is it free for all?  It makes no difference to me. Do whatever you are comfortable with.

Mini plush or big plush?  Either is fine! :)

I'm procrastinating badly as well. I did sew a ton of stuff for my rats today, but I'm still deciding and shopping around on what to do for my partner. There are a couple on the list that are just completely adorable, so I'm having a hard time picking one. :P

I've been working extra hours lately and preparing for finals so I haven't done much yet. Things should calm after next week.

Yarn hair or brushed yarn hair?  Whatever works for the pattern

Ribbons?

Should the plush style match the generation or is it free for all?  I don't mind either

Mini plush or big plush?  again, not picky

Emberfly that's awesome you got your grandmas sewing machine going :) each machine is different, even within the same model. They all have a different personality.

So it was bad news today :( my machine needs a big operation and is going to be in hospital for four weeks

The good news is the old bullet proof work horse (the spare seeing machine) is being recommissioned (got out of the cupboard).

I've had to start using the tiny straight stitch only cheapie machine we have, to fiddle about with some prototypes - hand stitching was taking too long!! it doesn't satin stitch, nor is it very neat, so I can't wait to get mine back...... picking it up on tuesday. So far away!

I've bought my pattern, thanks to Skeen's advice!  :)  I'm going to hit the fabric store this weekend and see if they have any Minky or something else soft.  I want this plush to be suepr cute and snuggly!  If I can't find what I need, I'll just get some cheap fleece to practice while I order some better fabric and wait for it to arrive.  :)

I have a table similar to that.  Mine looks like a desk and has drawers along one side.  My Dad bought it for me for $15 at an auction back in the late 60's.  It has my old Pfaft machine in it that I bought used backed in 1967. I bought a new Brother machine last year and just set it up on top of the desk.  No one can say I am not getting my money's worth out of that sewing table.

Dear partner! I have a bag of little beanies. I'm a fan of stuffed animals with beans in their feet so they're sort of floppy and squishy, lol. Would you be interested in something like that, or would you prefer a more structured standing plush?

i love the idea of floppy ponies or plushes, but maybe without the beanies. in the tragic event that my dog gets ahold of the plush i don't want there to be a chance she'd eat them. none of my plushes have beanie in them for that reason.
she's really good about knowing which ones are mine, but its a, just in case, kinda thing.

I have a question for all those who do embroidery on minky.  I'm trying to do some hand embroidery but the hoop leaves a mark.  How do you get rid of that indentation without harming the fabric?  I'm worried about melting it like what happened when Mom washed my teddy bear when I was a kid.

Eeeek poor teddy!

I have steam ironed my minky fabric before and it has been ok. I started out on the lowest heat and worked up. I know for velvet you are meant to use a mat which keep the pile nice.

I do hand and machine embroidery symbols, but I don't use a hoop so I have not had issues with marks.

Do you have any spare minky? perhaps have a test with the iron and see what happens :)

most of my minky has been purchased from a whole sale place a ways away. so i kinda stock up when i go.

test run 2 almost finished. one more pattern to try, then choosing and on to the real thing.
the test are really helping figure out how to tweek the patterns. so that's really nice.

I think it depends on the machine ;) the satin stitch on the machine I'm using at the moment is beautiful!

My other machine is fixed and back home :D the repair cost £100 which wasn't so bad.

I'm going to stick with the spare machine so the stitching is all the same.

i thought that was embroidery.
at least that's how i do it.....
wait. there are machines that do that for you?!?

Yep, that's basically embroidery.  ;)  That's what an embroidery machine does, except it makes it look like magic.

Oh my gosh!!!!! I had to buy more yarn and upon using it realized that the whites do not match!  Upon completing the pony the back legs are a different white as is part of one of the front legs :( So I have to start over and this time I will make sure I have enough white ARGGg!!!! On really can't believe how much difference there is to the white. Was hoping it would blend fine but alas. I guess I get to keep a pony for myself this time!

ah that stinks!

i'm leaving town for the weekend. and well. over half my back is filled with fabric and such for making plushes.
i'm hoping i'll finish at least one plush (testing the pattern) then i can decide which to use and cut out the fabric for the one for the swap.

this is not a question for the swap, but just in general if you like zecora, would a plush made from a zebra like print disappoint you?

Got the new plushies head some and the yarn is a smaller size so the pony is not going to be as big as it would have been. I hope that's okay, partner

Lol still jealous of Skeen's embroidery machine over here! I kept staring at them at Black Friday during the sale, but I keep telling myself I'm saving up for those new real horses and isn't it sad that the embroidery machine is like the same amount I'm saving for a horse?

I'm slow, my flu developed into bronchitius and it's to the point where I cannot eat because I cough so much and have to take pain meds because my lungs burn. Hancocks had a huge sale on fleece today (like with coupons it was $1.75 a yard and even the nicer fibers were only about $2.00 a yard). I have almost everything I need for the plush except a few small things they were out of that I need to pick up Saturday. I should have some work done in the evening with it, just slow since sitting up long periods makes me tired. Dang students getting me sick.

Partner if you have direct questions for me I don't answer fast enough I thoroughly encourage you to harass Skeen. :P

I mean, how cute is this diaper stacker? LOL The theme of the nursery is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, adorable, right? I also made a coordinating valance, per her request, and then I had fabric left over, which matched some minky I had, and voila, a blanket was made as well.

Now, I really need to kick my butt in gear and sew a plushie! At least I've got the embroidery designed and digitized

Oh!! And to keep it pony-related, I did make my 5yo a dress today to0

I'm alve! It was a busy week and I didn't get much done. But I ordered my fabric and will start a test plush soon. No idea how I'm going to do the eyes. May try hand embroidery on the tester. Or appliqué. I don't know yet.

In the time I was supposed to be doing this plush (which I HAVE started, for reals), I made a Sonata Dusk and did the hair for a TE Fizzy that has been kicking around for a year.  And I sewed the body for Aria Blaze.

I win at procrastination.

LOL Skeen, the comic print is adorable. My sister wants me to make one for my 2yo niece, so the girls can match :) (edit: she's not even 2 yet, what am i thinking?!)

It's nice to catch up on other sewing projects that have been laying around for too long, isn't it? I've always thought I work better under pressure  ;)

Tribble79 ~ argh! what a pain, I have had that happen too and it is frustrating. Often wool have batch numbers on the wrapper, I always make sure I pick balls with the same batch number. I doubt I would notice a slight difference in colour and I am sure what you make will be so cute any slight imperfection you see will be invisible to anyone else ;)

rosierjay ~ I couldn't imagine Zecora made from anything other than zebra print!

Maddie ~ get well soon!

SO! I sewed my plushies head yesterday and I am VERY pleased as I managed to figure out why my ears never line up and that issue is now fixed. My plush is also stuffed. I have been working on her wings as well, I decided to do something new and different. I didn't like the test I did until I put it on my plush, but they look PERFECT.

I will see you your pants and raise you my floor.  Mr. Skeen gave up vacuuming my sewing area because as soon as he finishes I start a new project.  Our "special" cat likes to roll in it too.

So basically I just sweep my fluff into the corner because I am afraid of the vacuum, and try to act like I actually cleaned it when he asks about it, but I think he knows I'm lying and is just too afraid to look behind the desk.

Hi all just wanted to share that my family had to put down our 7 year old boxer yesterday. I've never been more attached to an animal and I'm shattered and terribly depressed. I can't do much more than mope about wanting my doggy to come back to me and cuddle and try to make me not sad. She had such good intuition with that. I am already a rather invisible participant and once again i am sorry for that. I shall continue to mostly lurk. I'll try to keep you updated Skeen with any progress I make.

NinaMarie, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.  My thoughts are with you.

Third weekend in a row that I've been sick, not to mention the entirety of Christmas break was the same way.  This time it's tonsillitis.  I though only kids got that, I'm almost 40.  Well, partner, I could work on your plushie, but I may accidentally include a bacterial infection and I don't think you want that.  That being said, I'm now panicking about getting this thing done on time.

Triage is right!  I think I've done all I can for it.  The butt on it looks weird but luckily the tail goes there, amirite?  I'll get the hooves on tonight, turn and stuff, do some minor hand stitched detailing and then stick the head on.  Almost there!

Ugh, I haven't even touched it. Our $400 renovation has exploded to $4000. >_< Not by choice. We found out the shower had been leaking and rotted out the floor so now not only is the pantry being redone, but the master bathroom as well. New floor, lino, mudding, paint, tile... I took a week off work to help dad with it but its been horribly slow because there's been one stopping block after another with supplies not being here. Like, the new damn shower didn't come with a DRAIN and the hardware store won't have one for at least another WEEK. Oh, and they didn't have 5/8 plywood for the FLOOR so we're having to improvise with something else... how they managed to run out of freaking wood I'll never know... >_>  It's been a TON of fun because right now we have no shower, only a bathtub in the 2nd bathroom... and as of tomorrow there will be no more laundry for 1-2 weeks since we have to take out the washer and dryer to lay down the new floor!

I am going to try to finish pony this weekend if I get some spare time.

Try.

I've made an extra for my partner ^.^ I'm pretty sure it will compliment their collection ;)

She's ok, her ears are improved. Though I do have a very greasy kitty! We've got to do another week of the ear drops and visit the vets again next Friday. It's a job in itself taking her to the vet :faint:

I got some progress yesterday between all of the renos. Top of the man is done and all of the pieces for the bottom mane and tail are cut out. Now to sew. For some reason I picked the hardest of my partners choices to do. So. Many. Pieces. ^^;

I got the body together (FINALLY.  So. Much. Handsewing.) and crammed the head on.  The mouth is done, the ears, horn, and hair are finished and test pinned in place, and I just need a few more pieces.

But I have come to the decision that I am NEVER using the pattern again.  Some (major) pieces weren't included, with instructions that just said things that equated to "take a scrap and basically just guess where to sew it," included pieces did NOT line up, and some bits weren't really shaped very accurately.  If I ever make this character again (and I probably won't unless $$$$$$ are involved) I will have to design her from scratch.

Sewing machine broke. Stupid thing. I'm hand sewing now because I can't afford to get it fixed and it's taking FOREVER OMG. Been quiet around he forums lately because of life. I just started classes to finish my teaching license and its eating up what was left of my free time in a major way. I'll still be done on time if it kills me though.

have half the head stitched on. still need to turn everything inside out and stuff it.
then i'll be done.
had to redo a few things....
my home made pattern for the mane and tail ended up a little bit at first (tail was twice the size of the body. XD )
but i think it looks great now. well inside out.
i'll be sad to see the pony go.
speaking of. do we send a final pic to get the address?

Getting everything stitched together. It's been somewhat of a pain because my arthritis has flared up, and I'm wearing braces while sewing which I hate. Nothing much to do for it though at least I'll be done soon. I need a sewing break. >_<

You can send in final pics whenever.  The shipping date is the 2nd, so I'd like everyone to be done before then.  You won't get your partner's address until you're finished, and if you're not close to finishing I'll have your other partner hold your plush as well.

That is the best idea, wow! I am so behind and I'd feel awful if I got a plush before sending mine.
I had a scare Saturday. I woke up with heavy chest congestion. My sister is on her 3rd or 4th round of flu and I though I was headed into my 2nd but after bed rest all day and lots of water and garlic i was fine the next morning.

Is there anyone who is not going to be even close to finished by next Monday?  Please let me know ASAP.  That's fine if you're not quite done, but I don't want your other partner to ship until you are ready to go.  This is me being paranoid, but I don't want someone who isn't finished to get a plush and then just stop working.  I don't think anyone here would do that but I have seen traditional custom swaps go down that road and it won't be happening in one of mine, lol!

I brought my plush to work yesterday so I could do the majority of the handsewing of her various bits onto her body, but my vet called and said the cat was depressed and could I come out to visit him so I didn't get any of my sewing done.  I need to sew some wings still but other than that and the handsewing I am just about finished.

You don't have to wrap them in specialty paper or tissue or anything.  Well, actually, I think the Arena's rules say you do but these are likely pretty big and I'd rather they arrive safe than in pretty packages.  I wrap my plushies in plain brown paper and cushion them with air pockets or peanuts.  There isn't any extra credit for wrapping them in wrapping paper.  ;)

Awww, I wanted extra credit!

I might be a wee bit late with my pony but I'll know more on Sunday.  Report cards are due and since I was sick for most of February, I'm way behind.  I'm hoping to get the first draft done on Friday so I can pony on the weekend and get to ship on time.  So close and yet, so far.  Just the back of the mane and the eyes left.

Do you guys think you'll have a finished pony in another week though?  Because if you can get it done quickly after the deadline that's fine, that isn't too long a wait for your partners.  But if it's maybe possibly even remotely going to be longer than that for sure let me know so I can hold addresses.

If you ARE finished, would you mind posting here to let me know?  My inbox is about full and I don't want to lose anyone's status!  If I have already marked you as finished in the opening post, disregard.

I have mine done butnam not going to be able to ship until the 6th when I get paid... Someone got our bank account number and spent money... Had to file a claim and get new bank card.. Luckily ey didn't spend too much money but it was enough hat we had to pay 3 bounce fees which is like 30$ each!!!! So that being said we have had about 50$ for groceries last week and this week. Sorry that I will be shipping late! :(

I sewed all the last little bits tonight (and made patterns for half of them, stupid crap pattern set lacked them!).  I am pleased with her overall look, but I still have an accessory to figure out how to make.  Just some handsewing left otherwise!

EDIT  Ok, I have been working for 4 straight hours.  All accessories are done (and innovative, lol!), all major body parts are attached, and I really only have some hair to tack down.  Then I can take finished pictures and see if I have a box big enough to ship this thing in!

She needs to be washed & dried & have pics taken. I even had a little spare time, so made a little extra something :). Skeen, I'll try to get pics to you tonight or tomorrow. Until then, I'll disappear into the land of no internet for a little while...

I need literally like maybe one day. I completely finished her this weekend and started to box her up tonight. I realized "oh I need to take a picture to get the address for it!" Then as I was taking pictures I realized I hadn't painted her face yet (just eyes and a few things), so I got out my fabric pens and one busted all over me. I need like a day, so I can get a new not tomorrow. Right now she doesn't have eyelashes or a mouth and looks a little weird. Omg. Ugh stupid pens and my hands are stained black.

Mine will be out Wednesday.

Wanna hear about my amusing birthday yesterday? My mom is out of town so I was going to have a nice family dinner next weekend leaving yesterday to be just a regular old day. My sister just moved into a new apartment and her cat is not taking it well. He clawed his way into her boxspring and stayed there for 2 days. We ended up getting a new boxspring. I got to help her carry a cat pee soaked boxspring to the dumpsters. It was a very glamorous day haha
But it was fun spending time with her and we had ice cream cake later. I love a good story so I'm delighted by the idea of sharing my catpee boxspring dumping for my birthday story.

I'm DONE!!!  It was a bit later than hoped for and the pony didn't quite turn out as I had hoped but she's growing on me and I do think she's rather cute.  I hope my partner likes her.  I'll try to ship out tomorrow but I may not be able to do so until the day after.  But she's done! YAY!!!!!

I'm done with my plush!  I've been quiet lately all around because my classes to get my teaching license have started, so I've been totally beat.  But I am so so happy with my pony!  I'd definitely do some things differently next time (blow up the pattern and use a sewing machine, for starters) and the eyes and symbols took me 3 different tries before I was happy with them, but she came out so cute!  :D  And aside from one plush that I made a bazillion years ago in 7th grade home economics class, she's my first plush.

I finished her last night and tried to race to the PO today, but a meeting after work kept me just a few minutes too long and the doors were locked.  So she'll go out tomorrow as soon as I'm done with work.  I don't think she'll take more than a week to reach my partner.  Hopefully less, because I'm excited!

:silly:

Wrong eye color isn't a big deal to me.  A lot of the colors I use for my own stuff are purely subjective anyway!  (Though I have gotten a few butthurt messages whining that the color I used for whatever isn't exactly the color they wanted, which is funny because they OK'ed it to begin with...)

Apparently Mr. Skeen shipped Parcel Select so my partner will have a bit of a wait!  >:(

I hate to spoil the surprise but our last few packages are still "missing," so I am going to go ahead and reveal who your partner is so that you can try to find out where your packages are.

Anitasmom - you were to receive a plush from Uninu
Angelberries - you were to receive from Tilas
Coonhoundbetty -  you were to receive from Angelberries

I know you have all shipped your packages, so that isn't an issue.  Tilas's package has tracking so it should be possible to at least check to see if it's in Customs somewhere.  When you guys shipped, how did you mark your customs forms?  Did you send as a gift, or as goods, or with a high declared value?  I'm just trying to think of possible reasons packages might be delayed somewhere in the journey.

I put mine at the $100 as a gift (which is the max insurance claim on a box the size I sent without a ton more fees). I mailed it Tracked Packet International Small Business (I have Venture One) via Canada Post. So... it should have been there by now. :\

The tracking number is as follows for anyone who wants to look.

OK Leominster is my local pick up depot. Birmingham is the closest main sorting depot. Since I had guessed Tilas was sending to me, and she said shes had no update since the 22nd, I called customs fee, because thats what its probably doing there for so long. Since its still at Birmingham, it may still be in 'investigation' stage. There they decide, and then send it on to Leominster, who inform me I have a fee, if they decide that I do.

I haven't had a card to say I have a fee yet. Trying to view it via Parcel Force tells me nothing (nothing new there then, useless!)

So, I shall keep ye informed!

So, after the package goes to a different country, go to that country's tracking site and put the same tracking number in. Other countries try to honor the tracking as well if they can.

OK got it. I was viewing the mobile version of the site, had  to switch to 'desktop' version. Anyway, the info is the same for me. To me, it looks like it  says its despatchable to Leominster, but still in Birmingham. But that was days ago. It may have been dispatched but not updated. Luckily I also found the opening hours on the desktop version, and its open tomorrow morning, so I'll phone.

You needed to have not marked its value.  I know if you had sold the plush to Angelberries you would have (and should have!) marked it that high but this was a gift, not a purchase.  I'm going to PM both of you.

Unfortunately, my Canada Post won't allow it to be shipped without a value. They are extremely strict about how things can be mailed. Everything has to be filled out a certain way, and you can't use stickers or colored paper or anything.

I don't know about anyone else, but if something goes wrong and the parcel is lost, I want to be able to claim for at least the cost of the fabric and if I put a value of $10 on it, that's all I could get.  FYI, Skeen, the postal person filled in the value for me so I don't know what was put on.  They usually just ask if I need more than $100 coverage and when I say no they might put that down as the value.  I forgot about the possibility of my recipient having to pay customs and I hope you didn't have to.

I should have said "$10 or whatever for materials cost."  Just the cost of materials alone isn't likely to be high enough to impose a fee.

For the record, no, I didn't have to pay any fees and I don't know what the package value was, as I was too interested in opening it.  :)

^ This right here. I claimed what the package was worth, because if the parcel was lost, I wasn't about to be out the money for it. I had already paid closing in on $60 in shipping to ensure it's safe arrival with tracking and insurance, how is it getting caught in customs *my* fault? I have no control over another countries postal service, and to be blunt, I've mailed many international parcels (since I run a business, and am very active in Redditgifts, DA, Tumblr, etc) and it is RARE that one gets a customs fee when it's marked gift. This one just happened to be an unlucky pick of the draw I'm afraid.  Highly doubtful that marking it $10 would have made any difference, it's just a risk that international shipping takes.

It was just a bit over the amount thats 'safe' for UK import, which is currently £36. The fee I have to pay is £8/9 handling fee, and the rest is import duty on the item. If I tried to counter claim by saying its a handmade gift I would only get the import fee, not the handling fee back.

Having it sent tracked is a red flag to them as well, but at the end of the day, all the messing about for a mere £2 is really rude of them. Its something being in the UK I have to deal with.

I want to go and pick it up ASAP but this week I'm super short on money. Have to see what I can do, hope they keep it for me!

(And the guy on the phone was so short with me. like he said 'I remember writing and dating your card myself, It was sent to you' and I was saying I didn't recieve it, and he was adamant he sent it, doesn't mean it was delivered though! !!)

Sad thing is, if I didn't have it tracked it probably would never has reached you. Non tracked items have a nasty habit of getting stolen. >_> I never send an international box without tracking, even if it's just to the USA.
