Title: O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum

:xtree: :holiday:

The Stomper family put up their tree last Saturday. Actually, the junior Stompers did it all because I had had thumb surgery the previous day and was taking it easy. But that's okay - they love to put it up. They let me put the top of it on, though. I could handle that. :D

It's a fake tree that we received from our church family quite a few years ago, during Mr. Stomper's long stint of unemployment/underemployment. So it already has sentimental value.

Back when I still lived at home with mom and dad, we would go out and get a real tree. I do love and miss the smell of a real tree. Still, I'm content and I can always go find the nearest pine tree in the neighborhood and get a sniff if I feel nostalgic. :P Granted, there were more in Whitehorse than in Lethbridge, but there's still plenty nearby.

How's about you? Bonus poll question: do you have any lights on your house or in your yard? I love seeing Christmas light displays.

:holiday: :xtree:

We go au naturale every year! This year we got a fairly dead tree from a close-by lot :\ next year we'll be chopping our own from a farm. There are pine needles EVERYWHERE and it's not even the end of December yet, sagging branches with ornaments etc Dx oh well, I still like the smell. A fake tree would be more convenient, but it wouldn't feel as traditional for me since I've never had an artificial tree before.

What is amusing to me about your reply is that the real Christmas trees sold in front of our grocery stores, et. al., are advertised as from Nova Scotia. XD If I ever get a real tree, maybe it was a neighbor to your real tree.

You know, my grandmother would sing that in German when I was a kid :)

We didn't put the tree up this year.  I might put my little one up in my room though--not sure yet

Well, I have a fake tree but since at the moment I live with my in laws still they put up their tree so I guess it was nice not to have to do it. I did help a little to decorate it. They have a bigger fake tree than the one I have.

I have a little fake tree.  My husband and I tend to under-celebrate Christmas as it tends to be a stress-filled holiday for us.  Too many family members have been sadly ill for many years now.

But it's still nice to be with our loved ones, sipping co-co and watching Scrooged.   I don't know how that became our family holiday movie but it is. :P

Oh and our house is decorated with lights.  It's kind of a neighborhood thing and we don't want to be the only dark, gloomy house on the street.

Had our tree up the beginning of the month :) It wouldn't feel like Christmas without the tree! We have a fake tree because we were tired of the dead branches. Every time we touched it tons of needles fell off XD

I don't have a tree because I don't have room for one, nor do I have anywhere to store it for the rest of the year (living in a single room with shared facilities - not fun!) I am considering getting some lights and putting them up one my wicker bookcase though, as it has poles at the front and an arch at the top. Not quite a tree but it'd look a bit festive at least!

That's such a cute idea! I have lots of dog ornaments and puppy's first Christmas ones ^.^ I should do that too!

We have a large fake one that we've had for over 20 years. You wouldn't think it's that old if you saw it (probably because my mother is amazing at decorating trees)! We also have a medium sized fake one decorated with Pokémon :)

We have a fake tree - mostly because of the pets, and because we like to have it up longer - when I was single I had a real tree, that traditionally I'd go chop on Christmas eve morning, and spend the day decorating and preparing for Christmas. Now my husband is a Christmas nut, and everything starts December 1 - the lights, carols, tree, gift wrapping, you name it, it's the WHOLE of December. I play the grinch, but I do kinda love it - he just needs toning down sometimes, haha!

I don't have any pics yet this year, but our house is covered in lights!

We use fake trees, one of which we've been using for a good 15 years or so and it's starting to run its course.
The big one in our living room is a 7' green tree. I have a 6' white tree in my room.

A small fake table top tree with built in lights (the branch tips glow). It was gifted to me by my BFF's parents. The first Christmas I lived here. It's the perfect spot of Yule cheer. And a good size for my one bedroom apartment. Plus it's cat friendly, no light wires for them to chew on.

Last year I managed to get a handful of my childhood ornaments from my parents house. Those I'm saving till I can put up a full sized tree.

And the title of this thread is the only song I can sing in German.

A full sized crappy fake one. My grandparents had an awesome fake tree and you have to put the branches in one by one. They were color coded as to where they went.

I put a small one up the first year I moved out, but after that,
I was at the realization: What is the point of this?
Haven't bothered since.
If I didn't live close to family, I wouldn't bother celebrating at all.

We always put a tree up, but we're skipping it this year. Three 5 month old, hyper-active kittens plus a Christmas tree equals a bad combination, especially when the kittens like to jump and climb everywhere.

I love any excuse to decorate but I'm keeping my decorations outdoor this year. Trees don't do well with a very hyperactive kitten. If you have a fake tree but miss the smell of a real one they make little scented ornaments you can hang in there. Or of course scented candles can do the job too.

We have a full sized fake one. I do miss having the rea ldeal, like I did when I was younger. Nothing quite compares to the smell of a real tree. One day perhaps we'll have one again.

We used to have real trees.... I loved it. But my mom likes penny trees more. She got a real vintage one, that was like a lollipop tree, with a wooden pole that you shoved tinsel covered metal rods into. There were pom poms on the ends of each pole, and it had a lot of empty space.... plus, it was impossible to decorate and smelled terrible. Now we have a regular silver tinsel tree that's tree shaped, and I like it better. I decorated it alone this year, with white and blue twinkling star lights, then silver and blue ornaments and a silver star on top. It's beautiful! I also have a mini blue tinsel tree. It's a lighter blue, with satin ribbon garlands and silver and aqua ornaments. They're both so pretty!

We have one (fake full-sized) up, but it isn't decorated at all yet. Between our schedules and everything else new I have to be entertained by (Pokemon OR and Kingdom Hearts 2.5) I haven't gotten around to it... And I'm the one that's supposed to be doing it. Lol.

my family still treks out to cut down our own tree. i have to hand it to my father for putting up with it though, since he's pretty allerigic to pine. my brother and i are too, though not nearly as bad, so we just get a bit itchy and put up with it. we're actually going tomorrow to get our tree, so it's a neat coincidence this thread popped up. i'm definitely a little more than excited to hang some ornaments!

We have a fake full sized one. I prefer the fake trees because they look more symmetrical and have more branches to decorate.  It also means I don't have to kill a tree :)

My tree is small and fake. Just perfect for a small apartment.

We used to have real tree. I don't why my parents bought a fake one. Yes it's easier. No need to vacuum so often. And cats didn't like it that much :D And it saves money.  My grandparents have real ones, every year. I like the scent of the real ones.

But real or fake one, it really doesn't matter to me.

I´ve always chopped down my own, since my family owns some forest land. But the last couple of years it´s really given me a bad concience. I don´t like the idea of cutting down a living young tree, so from now on we´re going plastic fantastic.
Good for the carma, me thinks :-)

We have a real, full-size tree this year, which isn't the normal : o but we're also celebrating Christmas at home this year instead of going to a relative's house, which also isn't the normal, hehe.

I have to be careful not to touch the tree too much because I'm allergic to most kinds of trees. I got hives helping put up the ornaments... :drunk:

I really love Christmas trees, though. The ones with the lights on them especially, they look so pretty! :lovey:

We'll put up a real tree on Christmas Eve. When I was younger we used to have large ones, over 2m high, but now we just have them about 120-150 cm. I've always wanted to decorate house or trees in our garden with lights, but my family is very paranoid about those things and they're afraid that our house will catch fire if we do that (>__>)

And you post this with no photos?

Live one, usually fresh cut by me, but with me being on light duty to due to work injuries we hit the local Costco and got one from them.  I think it is the smallest tree we have had in years, and it is an 8 footer.  LOL  I can not use all our ornaments.  I am so not used to a sheared tree anymore.  I look forward to going back to cutting our own next year.

I have a fake tree because I have dogs and the pine needles would be a PITA.  I usually put it up right after Thanksgiving, but it's up with my hubby's grandparents and with our weird opposite schedules, I haven't gotten it yet!   We are going tomorrow to get the decorations so I can get the house nice and festive.  Christmas is my favorite!

As a child we always got a real tree, but when I was in college, there were no good tree farms nearby, so we bought an artificial tree that we used for about 5 years. Now that we've moved again, we're back to buying real trees! You just can't beat a real one!

Our house has been very busy this year, so our tree is set up, lighted, and garlanded - but still waiting on ornaments! We've also got extra lights strung up around the walls and ceiling - mood lighting, ya know ;)

It's funny to here but not decorate the house for Christmas, even wanting a lot, here in usually devote much for supper itself, with a great abundance and variety of food, and so much food that lasts until the 10th of January, anniversary of my mother, and when I want to see Christmas decoration will at the mall or in the pond to see the tree it, which in beautiful ta sign this year, but I feel so much christmas envy of Americans and Europeans, with snow and decoration and neat, here is so hot in this period that Santa has a special suit, shorts and t-shirts, lol

Lovely pics of your cat, Tikibirds!

I don't have a tree here in the UK, but we'll have one when I go to my mum's for Christmas. It'll be a real tree, too (fake trees are very uncommon in Germany). I think it's interesting that in many places around the world, people put up their trees and light them weeks before Christmas. In Germany, most people only put up their Christmas tree on Christmas Eve or maybe the day before, and it's not lit for the first time until we get the presents on Christmas Eve.

We didn't get the tree today.  I'm afraid we might not even get it set up this year.  :( :( :(  But my husband went to the ER last night with chest pain (he is ok, thankfully) and we didn't get home until 6am and I didn't wake up again until 2pm.  We just ran out of time in the day.  I'm hoping maybe he will swing by and get it this week while I'm at work.  Otherwise, we won't get it up at all.  :(

I would love to have a real one, but I have a fake one instead. I just purchased another fake one (for next year) yesterday, as the one I currently have up is on its last legs.

I love white trees, and refuse to go green for a fake tree, so it was quiet a feat finding another white one at a reasonable price.

We used to do the whole Xmas thing but over the years it was more effort than it was worth. Winter is the WORST time to buy gifts, since it's when we're all the poorest since much of our work is summer seasonal. So we decided a few years ago to just not bother with anything xmas, and really, it doesn't bother anyone.  We do a xmas dinner, bout it. We ask people not to give us anything because we won't be reciprocating. My best friend is more than happy to not do it, because to her "you're not buying me a gift, you're buying me an obligation" LOL. She shares the sentiment lol.

here people traditionally/usually set up the tree only on the 24th, so right now we wouldn't have one under any circumstances, but since I live together with my husband we don't have a tree at all. we basically travel through Christmas and never celebrate at home (first we either go to my father or my cousin, neither of whom live in the same city as we do currently, though they are pretty close. then on the 25th to my mother's family, to a village further away, and either on that evening or the next morning, to hubby's family, much further away. then we stay there for a couple of days), so even if we had a tree we wouldn't really get to see it a lot. in return, we get to see others' trees :)
neither of us is really happy about cutting out real trees, but we also both dislike fake trees, so not having a tree at home doesn't really bother either of us. though I do have a very small fake tree, and I planned to use it in a photoshoot, so I might go and set that up. I have just recently bought some small ornaments, but I want to repaint them. if I manage to finish the painting job in time I'll definitely set the tree up to see how they look on it.

while I lived at home we always had a huge real tree (like... 2.5-3 metres high, up to the ceiling), and I loved its size and its smell. my best pony memories are all related to Christmas, when my sister and I used to play with our older or just received ponies under and behind the Christmas tree.

I recently (within the last few years) asked my mom why we always got a fake tree when I was growing up. Apparently I'M the one who's allergic to Christmas trees! I guess it makes sense, but somehow no one ever actually told me over the course of all these years. Well, now I know, I guess.

Anyway, I got my fake tree up last weekend, then I put the ornaments on day before yesterday. :)

We have a full-size fake tree in the family room, then our girls have small fake ones in their rooms (and those have all the pony ornaments, lol!).  Then I have two pre-lit flanking our front door on our porch.   I love Christmas trees!!

Growing up we always had real trees, then once my brother and I went away to college, my parents got an artificial tree.

Sometimes I'll buy a real pine wreath to hang in our house to get that lovely pine smell.  :)

ours is an old, old tree that my dad rescued from the skip when he was working, its at least 20 yrs old :P the base had broken off so the company were throwing it away but dad said he'd take it and make a new base for it to stand in so they let him take it for free  they also threw in all the gold & purple baubles AND a set of about 200 gold lights  sadly the lights went kaput a few years ago and some of the baubles have broken over the years, and now this year the tree is starting to shed its 'needles'

but its done us proud so i'm not moaning ;)
