It's about the size of a pinkie finger nail, so super tiny. I wanted it to be a diamond, but it said no and turned into a heart instead. For my first rough gem cutting, shaping and polishing myself, I'm pretty pleased.

Very pretty :) You did a great job.
-
It is pretty! Are you saying you carved this out of a gem stone? That's pretty awesome!
-
yep! it was a raw, unshaped opal.
-
Great Job! It looks so cute! Lapidary work seems like so much fun. :)
As a jeweller in the making, I'd love to learn to cut my own rocks but I'm not sure I'll have the time.

It did take an hour or so, and a lot of money to get the tools. I think it will be interesting when I have a stone that does better with facets rather than beveling.

that's really cool

Yay!!!! Lapidary!
Opal is hard to polish due to getting the orientation right so you see the pretty colours. You have done a beautiful job :)
I used to work for a company that sold lapidary supplies. I never got to cut a stone, but I learnt a lot about the machines, tools, materials and processes :)

That's beautiful! I love the color.

Opals are gorgeous. You did a wonderful job for your first time around!
-
Id love to learn something like that (as someone that makes jewelry). You did a great job :)
-
Thank you all  I think I'm going to polish it a bit more before I set it. It's part of a christmas gift.
-
This reminded me of Maud Pie!
-
Thats very pretty! You have done great job!
If this is your first then I'm looking foward to future to see how much you will improve ;) because I bet the future gems will be also fab ;).

That is so pretty! You did a fantastic job :)

Wow! It's so pretty! Opals are my absolute favorite, I just love them.
-
Wow, this is cool! Is this something you're just teaching yourself? This would be really neat to learn. I would have no idea how to go about cutting or setting anything into a necklace or ring, but that would be amaaaazing to learn! What satisfying work.
Opals are my most favorite stone, and yours looks lovely!

Yup! I had a little guidance from a friend who takes an amazing amount of college courses, and I've done the same basic stuff with my sculptures in the past, so it was a bit of an easier segway.

There are some good tutorials on YouTube as well ;) but nothing beats one to one tuition and practice :)
I'd love to see a picture of your opal set :)

Love stones of the most varied, have a huge collection, and I must tell you to be careful with the form of opal lapidation because depending on the heat it can lose color, since it has a lot of water in its chemical composition and it is relatively fragile, prefer cabochon model instead of diamond, although I like most of your model, as seems more natural, great job.

so that's why it lost it's sparkle! I'll keep that in mind.

I love gemstones! It's so tiny and precious, great job!
-
Very neat you shall have to show it off all set.

Well, opal and a half stone hard work because of that I told you, if you want a stone in lapidation diamond prefer the quartz because hold up better lapidation, well, have some translucent quartz and quartz crystal or green gold and rose quartz, or even citrus and amethyst, hope you show the final result also of opal,
