Post by: Violet CLM on December 03, 2014, 10:56:00 PM
Remember this blue Applejack fakie? She's been all over eBay lately, multiple new listings a day:

Amazing, aren't they? The white Fluttershy in particular I'm totally prepared to accept as a legitimate new character. Perhaps they're the big sisters of these fillies. What are the quality of these things? I like the look of them but I wonder if the quality is similar to that of the normal G4 toys or significantly worse?

I have a blue unicorn applejack on the way- I pre-named her "Applelula"  (Applejack/Trixie)
I just checked, and the same seller has the others.  I might go for them if the prices don't go crazy- Applelula was $4.
What would anyone else name the hybrid ponies?  It's early here, so pre-coffee, I'm coming up with:
Twilight Dash
Apple Sparkle
Flutterity
Pinkie Rare

I don't know if these are nicer quality than the actual official ponies but the molds look pretty much exactly the same. It would be nice to have a more readily available white pegasus custom base without needing a fbr.

Oooh!  These guys are really cool! The colors are actually quite nice on most of these guys.  I like the blue Applejack, the white Fluttershy, and the pink Rarity best.

ok can someone enlightenme on the fakie aspect?  Is the community sure it's not just test-runs of later official releases?  Kinda like how minty had a type A and then B was the official release?  White celestia also comes to mind, although I think her current white incarnations might be a different mold (?)

yah I just stumbled into the ebay link and figured I'd hop over here sure some pony knows the scoop = I agree I like the white fluttershy and blue AJ the best so far

thanks in advance for explanations  = not expecting these to be an investment, but it would be cool to know if they are factory rejects vs just some china company stole a mold and is pumping stuff out "fakie"

oh and yep, given Hasbro is really only McD quality at this point I am not surprised that "fakies" can be seen as just as good as the "real MLP" at this point IMO

Love the white Fluttershy and RD looks much better with the happier eyes! I'm not sure they're fakies, just test runs. They're cute test runs, too!

Is anyone else really perturbed by the eye placement on that purple Unicorn!Applejack? It looks really horrendously (and hilariously) wrong to me... I love the white Fluttershy one though; her colour combination is gorgeous.

I have the blue Applejack.  She's super cute, but only has a single line of hair plugs. Her friends are adorable!  And I now want all of those babies.

What are the quality of these things? I like the look of them but I wonder if the quality is similar to that of the normal G4 toys or significantly worse?
I compared my "Applelula" to a Lemony Gem, since she's likewise a unicorn head on a rearing body. First off, the fakie does use a remade mold, but it's subtle... the seam down the front is a little more prominent, and there's no "Hasbro" or other text on the hooves, but that's all. They appear to have the exact same proportions. The tinsel is much stringier than the tinsel from the Crystal Empire singles (I don't have a Rainbow Power single to compare it against). And the hair isn't awful, but it does feel somewhat coarser than even the tail on my Easter single Lily Blossom; I haven't tried styling it in any way so I don't know how much that would present a problem.

So the quality is lower. But not terrible! They're not squishy or anything, and the hair is all decently long, and the painting looks good.

(Apply "sample size of one" disclaimers as necessary, since I know there's a variety of qualities within official releases too.)

I love that we dont just get fakies copying the moulds...but they go all out and copy the all over body symbol thing as well :P Not my thing but I kind of like the white pegasus.

Blue AJ is only about $2 at this point! It's the others that are new and thus pricey.

EDIT: Sale prices of initial auction run:
Pink Rarity: $15.51
Blue RD: $8.51
White FS: $25.99
Purple RD: $10.50
Purple AJ: $5.50
All five have been relisted. Should be interesting to see how this turns out...

EDIT2: Second run:
Pink Rarity: $4.76
Blue RD: $4.75
White FS: $7.50
Purple RD: $4.75
Purple AJ: $5.50
Prices falling fast. No relists yet, but they'll probably come.

Applelula has arrived!- the hair is much brighter than pictured, kind of a brilliant orange-red striped with sea green and the iridescent tinsel- very festive.    The only really obvious inferiority is that they didn't trim the "flash" off the front seam.
I'd definitely get the other ponies- but it looks like this round of auctions is going to be up past $5 per pony again.

So it turns out (http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,362184.msg1323068.html#msg1323068) that the Rarity also comes in white! (but oh dear, those eyes...)

There isn't (http://data.mlpmerch.com/search?q=rarity) any legitimate Rarity release that uses that particular design (raised hoof, multicolored gems down the legs), so these are definitely related. So does that mean all these miscolored girls (which are turning up on eBay in ever-increasing numbers, for the record) are actually prototypes for more accurate fakies? Hmm.

I just received my "Applelula" (the blue unicorn with Applejack's cutie mark) in the mail today so I thought I would give a thorough review of her.

Short version: she is 100% a fakie, and I would guarantee all the other new ones that are from the same seller are also fakies.  I paid ~$4 or so for her, which I feel is reasonable, but they are definitely not worth the $10-$15 that the new ones are selling for at the moment.

Long version: As I mentioned, she's definitely a fakie.  She's using the bent leg body pose, but any copyright/Hasbro/My Little Pony info on the bottom has been scrubbed from the mold.  The hooves are blank, except for the standard hole.  The plastic is very similar to that used in the real releases, but the flashing from the mold is a little more prominent.  Overall it's not too bad, but it's raised enough that you could trim it off if it bothers you.

The head is based off of the older version, so there are no "fat cheeks" and no seam lines on the head.  The head uses a slightly different plastic from the body, so it is a slightly different color, but it is also shinier than the body.

The hair is a little dry but overall not bad quality hair.  The mane has two hair colors with some slightly crinkly tinsel, and the tail has one color.  The mane has one row of plugs, in the spot where the right row normally is, so the mane is a little off-center.  The tail is rooted instead of having one hole, and my tail root marks seem a little haphazard, not uniform, with some marks of plastic damage at the point of hair insertion.  A tail ribbon covers the damage nicely.

The biggest issue I had was when I went to brush out her hair, and she started shedding pretty badly.  I was very gentle after I noticed this, but still lost more hair getting out the travel snarls.  I would definitely not recommend her for play, as I am afraid how much extra hair she would lose.

Overall, she is super cute and fits in nicely with real ponies, but I would be extraordinarily careful about brushing her and keep her mostly for display only.  Hopefully this review has helped someone!

Would they be good bait so one can avoid needing a fbr?

Maybe -- you would probably want to punch an additional row of holes in the mane and fix the tail hole though.  If you're more comfortable with that than you are with an FBR they may work just fine.
