I was thinking about this yesterday and thought I'd ask -- what's your favorite accent? An accent from another country, another region, your own? :) I know we have people from so many countries on here, and I'm curious to know what you all think!
I have a general American accent, but I love English and Scottish accents. I can put on an English one (a very toffee-nosed version, anyway), but the Scottish one is so hard. I think it's so pretty and want to learn it since my ancestors were Scottish.
-
English. It's my favorite. Always has been. I'm quite taken with Australian accents too.
-
I'm pretty biased towards the Australian accent as my husband is Australian, but pretty much any accent besides American is nice haha!
-
hum...
I think Aussie. Just don't get it confused with anything else or you will have fakies flying your way ;)
-
French! so sexxy! :P
-

Well, there are multiple accents within America, you know. :P In general, our accents are pretty boring. I guess it's because we're so used to them.
I also love the Australian accent. I had an Australian friend who had moved here back when we were in jr. high and I would always ask him to tell me a story, any story, just so I could hear him talk.
-
When it comes to the english language I really love the brittish accent, preferable english. I love listening to scottish as well, but have a hard time understanding at times. I like Australian also.
In my own land I am biased and really love the northern accent from people farther in from the sea.. the accent my mothers boyfriend have is so beautiful
-
I love a wide variety of accents from all over the world, although my favourites would have to be Texan and Indian vibes; they sound so nice! I'm also keen on accents that are relatively local, although Manchester ones don't really do it for me (probably because I hear them every day), Geordie and Brummie accents are totally adorable. Oh and Welsh accents are awesome as well. :D
-
French! so sexxy! :P
Ah oui! lol French accents are very lovely ;) Always been my favourite.
I'm know a lot of Americans are fond of British accents, but I don't really know why XD I like all the other European accents better ;)
-
I do quite like a Scots accent. Which is lucky because I live in Scotland!
I also like Scandinavian and French accents in particular. :) I think all accents are pretty cool and often wish I had a more distinct accent myself.
-
Scottish :lovey:
-
Irish (biased) and scottish. Everytime Chibs on Sons of Anarchy opens his mouth I swoon :-P
-
Australian!! :)
-
I am always so embarrassed by my australian accent, its amazing to see so many people who like it so much!
Personally I love a man with a scottish accent, I like to just pretend Ewen Mcgregor is talking to me.. :)
-
French! so sexxy! :P
Oooooh oui! I love that accent too, even though my own fake French accent sounds horrible when I'm speaking French. I'm pretty sure if I were to go to France, they'd just laugh at me. >_<
-
In general, our accents are pretty boring. I guess it's because we're so used to them.
Exactly. I also think it's the WAY American English is spoken as well. I don't really know how to describe it, but the way we pronounce our words is so...blunt? Whereas British/Irish/Australian/New Zealand all have more of a "singsong" quality. I don't know if I'm making any sense...
Probably the closest American accent comes to that quality is the southern, and if I had to pick a fave American one that'd be it.

Second that, american southern accents are beautiful.

Yup. I get where you're coming from.
When I was younger, I didn't like southern accents. I thought it sounded funny. Now I really like that accent! It's really distinct when compared to other American accents.
-
A (UK) West Country accent always brings a smile to my face.
-
I find Boston accents rather amusing. Same with the "stereotype" version of a Minnesotan accent dontchaknow? (I don't know if that accent is real or just made up for the telly.)
I once saw an Egyptian doctor at a walk-in clinic and I seriously could not tell what he was saying to me about 75% of the time. I have an easier time with the Libyan fellow and folks from Newfoundland. (Sorry Newfies! You throw me for loop when you go deep into your accents.)
I enjoy listening to Australians and New Zealanders. British, Irish and Scottish too. :) I find myself wishing I had the version of Skype that lets me call worldwide just so I can give some of you a listen.
After living in Canada for 15+ years, I don't really notice an accent anymore. I still notice their "sorry" sounds a little more like "soory" (rough approximation) but they don't really say "eh?" to excess.
My hubby and I will tease each other about our accents though. He pronounces produce as "praw-duce" and I say "proh-duce." Then it's reversed when we say progress. He says "proh-gress" and I say "praw-gress."
-
I love, in no particular order as it always changes, : British English, Montana drawl, and slow Southern drawl. American accents can be just as sexy as our overseas counterparts. I may be biased though. :P
-
Scottish, Welsh, but generally anyone who has a regional accent especially if they are articulate!
-
Pretty much any thing from Germany eastwards :P No idea why...maybe its all the hot bad guys with their Russian accents in action movies :P
-
Hands down Scottish.
Especially Scottish men.... :lookround:
-
I have a non-descript American accent, although I might sound a little southern at times. I love southern accents. (I DO NOT mean hillbilly/redneck southern. LOL) I like listening to Latin and Spanish people talk, too. :)
-
I second the MA/East Coast making me giggle. If more sexy sounding Scots of the male persuasion would read audio books I would be a happy Ry. 'Scuse me while I melt...
-
For me #1 is Australian, #2 is Boston, #3 is Irish, #4 is Russian
-

in addition to some english accents, i'd totally agree with you on the scandinavian and french accents. oh gosh i just adore them! :lovey:
-
I have a thing for Scottish and Irish accents, especially on men. :D
-
I'm pretty biased towards the Australian accent as my husband is Australian...
YEP! XD Although, I don't even hear it anymore unless he says some uniquely Aussie phrase I've never heard before. It was the same when I lived in Oz, I never realized when people on TV were American.
-
Awww, have I got to pick only one?
I'm always partial to the Downeast Maine accent, ayuh! I'm a little biased toward that, though. :)
I've also always loved mid-Atlantic American accents; the kind of thing that was popular in Hollywood's silver screen era.
Boston "Blue-Blood" is also a favorite of mine. I think it's what Tabitha St. Germain was going for with her portrayal of Rarity.
-
I'd definitely go with the British accent, myself. I can't really say which one in particular, though, I like the way most of them sound. I guess all of those years of watching British shows endeared me to it.
-
French, italian and greek sounds lovely :inlove: :inlove:
I really love Greece, their culture is so beautiful and their alphabet are so interesting !
-
Irish
-
I am Australian, and I think our accent is dumb. I like the more subtle cajun accent and ones from places like Minnesota and New England within the US. And I also like some English accents quite a lot.
-
This guy I knew online had an Australian accent that sounded mixed with English (his friends teased him for not having a true Australian accent). But it was far more beautiful than theirs to me. :P It was dreamy!
-
Scottish for me too. And British English. Hugh Grant, swooooooooooooon!
-
Ya'll know there isn't JUST ONE British accent, right? I mean, I think everyone here is thinking the 'posh' Londoner accent, but MOST Brits don't sound like that. I mean, Cockney accent. . . Or Yorkshire. . . :P Chavs don't sound all that posh either. . . Or cultured.
And the from American Southern accent actually originates from different British accents, sooooo. . .
Which also brings me to the point there is NO one Southern accent. The stuff on TV is a far cry from how a lot of different southerners sound like. Maybe Virgina and South Carolina, you might get the plantation southern accent, but NOT where I've been living! Stuck between the armpit of Georgia and Alabama here in the Pan Handle of Florida. Sometimes the accent is so thick, it's quite hard to understand some people around here being from Wisconsin originally, and even after 11 years here, sometimes it's like, "What was that?!"
I, myself, have an inbetweeny accent, I have never picked up the Southern drawl, but I was about an hour and a half out of Chicago in one of the Wisconsin suburbs, and oh, yes, I have a partial Chicago accent to mix with my Wisconsin accent, but I don't have a farm girl accent like some people here think a Wisconsin accent sounds like. @_@
I don't think I necessarily have a favorite accent? Being someone who studied linguistics, I enjoy a wide range of accents.
-
French and German <3

I'm sure we're all aware, but as we don't know specifics of those far overseas (or just like them all) we generalize. :) Of course we Americans know the southern accents vary as well. My SO is from MS and his is soooo thick, but then I've heard others even from the same state who sound very different, and of course other states in the south sound nothing like I've heard from him.
-
Single Aussie female looking for a lady here :P lol.
But seriously, I have a thing for the kiwi accent. Its adorable.
My accent unfortunately doesn't sound Australian, I get mistaken for a foreigner a lot, but im born and bred 4th gen aussie. Mine apparently sounds a bit kiwi or South African, no idea why.
-

Given that probably 99% of the people I meet think I'm 'from somewhere in Europe, England maybe' I'd say the subtleties between Chav and cockney might be hard for the average American to detect. Sure you'd think Scottish might be easier. But I'd throw is out that most American's couldn't tell the difference between Irish and Scottish.
And that isn't having a go. Most Australians would probably assume someone with a mild Canadian accent was American. You're ear is only trained for things you're used to hearing regularly.
-
Scottish! Maybe because I am scottish, but never lived there, xD but I just think the accent is soooo nice to hear.
-
Argentinian, Australian, Espana, Portuguese, Italian, French...:lovey: Any guy with any of those accents make my day, if you know what I mean! ;)
-
My favorites are Aussie, Scottish, Irish, English (London or Cockney!!!) I love the accent from Gloucester Mass too (it's like a SUPER Boston accent)
-

lol, I was going to say this too :p I think most non-English people think of Received Pronunciation when they say "English accent" (that or Cockney), when RP tends to be affected.. At least, I've never met anyone that actually has that accent, haha. (I mean, I'm sure some people *do* naturally have that accent, but you know.)
I like Southern American accents, personally. (I'm not sure how many different variations there are, aheh) I'm not *attracted* to them or anything, I just like how they sound.
-
British english and scottish - but I also luv it when a Dane talks in german :D
-
I'm South African and personally hate my accent. Also when I hear SA accents on tv I cringe. We sound so stupid. :yikes:
Anyway. My favourite accents are Irish, Southern American and Canadian.
-
One of the ladies I used to work with had a pretty neat accent, Sri Lankin with very English pronunciation. I didn't really find it attractive, just fascinating as she spoke so fluent for someone with English as a second language.
When it comes to other languages I really love listening to Sinhala. Its a beautiful dialect and always sounds so happy. Some other languages confuse me as I don't know if the person is arguing or just talking fast. Greek and Mandarin do my head in. I have started to understand but not speak some Greek, its too fast paced for me to speak it.
-
I like the New York accent (or is it called Brooklyn?). I also like British/Irish accents and I would like to speak English with the BBC accent  And English with German accent is just  I don't like English accent from my region because it sounds like Russian but way duller. I do love when foreigners speak Croatian though! :)
-
Welsh, strong Scots (none of the namby pamby Edinburgh accent thank you!) and Irish.
However, being a true patriot, I am banning everyone who loved the Aussie accent!
-
Irish and Scottish.
-

Can I love you for that?! :) I have no idea what you guys see/hear in the Aussie accent? I hear it quite a lot and even get mistaken for an Aussie (I'm a Kiwi thanks!), I even cringe at a strong Australian accent like that of the late Steve Irwin.
My fav accents have to be Scots or Irish. If any of you guys know of any audio books read by a male with either of these accents please let me know - doesn't matter what type of story it is I just want to listen to the accent. :)

David Tennant has narrated a bunch of Doctor Who audio books and also The How to Train you Dragon audio book. I could listen to him all day.
-
David Tennant? Must go find... *drools*

LOL I feel the same about the American southern accent! It annoys me to no end, like nails on a chalkboard, but apparently alot people here like it....

I can agree with the American southern accent, my mum talks to a us friend and he has that southern voice, drives me nuts.
I understand with the Aussie accent too, I am glad that I don't sound completely Aussie lol. Mine seems to be an odd mixture of my very own.
-
English. Irish, Scottish accents are my favorites. ( I have Irish and English in my bloodline to name 2, sometimes I think I forget a country when I list my nationality linage ) (on my mothers side I'm German & Irish, on my fathers side Russian, Austrian, English & French. )
-
I'm South African and personally hate my accent. Also when I hear SA accents on tv I cringe. We sound so stupid. :yikes:

OMG! Not at ALL! I  the South African accent! Though I do find the hardcore Afrikaans person speaking English (like Jack Parow or Die Antwoord) rather entertaining, I completely cannot resist an English South African accent. Hmm its hard to describe, like my Afrikaans boyfriend went to an English private school and he's got this South African accent when he speaks English thats just to die for! ... then again, maybe I'm biased! LOL
*puts on French accent* and of course, being French, I don't particularly find the French-trying-to-speak-English accent sexy at all though when I fake it (my normal accent sounds more American), or when I get phone calls and I answer in French, everybody around me just stops and listens! hehe
-

Hahahaha. Yes, Die Antwoord type accents are hilarious from an entertainment point of view. I love putting that accent on as a joke. But when you're watching a non-SA tv show and suddenly a character appears with an SA accent... UGH!!!
Here is an accent challenge I did cos some of my overseas friend's were asking. I'm South African English, no Afrikaans here :) http://bit.ly/1xLh0eU (http://bit.ly/1xLh0eU)

British, because it's the swaggest accent.
And Irish, because it just sounds bad-ass.
-
I'm South African and personally hate my accent. Also when I hear SA accents on tv I cringe. We sound so stupid
If that's you in that challange video, I would of said british accent, not SA.
-
Irish and English accents are so sexy (am I allowed to say that?) Australian is a fun accent. Jamaican accents sound almost musical and I love them. I'm learning that I really like Japanese accents too. I don't think I have an accent. Its just...there I guess? Just a regular American non-accent? Would you even call that an accent? I used to date this guy from Israel and wow did it blow me away at how gorgeous and soft it was! Yummy :inlove:

North-American USA english accent is considered neutral. The same can be said fro the spanish from Mexico and the spanish from Spain. Different accents, but Mexico's is more neutral.

Trust me you have an accent. No one can hear their own accent. I am an Australian living in Southern California and I have never met anyone who doesn't have an accent. The only people who don't sound like they have accents to me are Australians I've already heard speak.

Oh yeah, there's a SoCal accent. When I went to college in Indiana people picked it up right away. Apparently it's also a SoCal thing to talk really fast? I didn't notice until I got out of state and people asked me to slow down yet fellow SoCal students could understand me perfectly.
Even in a mono-lingual country like Japan there are accents. I learned to speak conversationally in Iwate prefecture in Tohoku, so I speak Japanese with a Tohoku accent, which Japanese people can pick up instantly.
As for my favorites, Australian, Middle Eastern, and South African accents are my favorite. I also find Indian and Scottish to be interesting to listen to.
-

Yep that's me in the video  And phew, that's a relief ;)
-
I've always liked the Australian accent and British.
-
Lol, this is an interesting question. To be honest -- I like a real Caribbean accent. Though any accent from another country is always interesting to listen to. My aunt is Russian, and she does NOT have the stereotypical Russian accent that you always hear in movies and things. Not all Russians have the same accent, and I always have to point that out when we're watching one of those movies.
-
Good question! I like lots of African accents, myself - especially those from Nigeria, Uganda and Liberia! :D
-
British and Australian. Guys with those accents.....mmmmm, lol!
-
British and Australian. Guys with those accents.....mmmmm, lol!
Of course you would like a British accent, Cumberbatch2012. ^.^
-
Gosh this is giving me a giggle... what is with the Australian accent that appeals to so many people? Of course I can't tell because I've got one myself, you can't hear your own accent. Though I get teased endlessly by my boss (who's from England) and coworker (Aus/NZ) that I sound American or Canadian! :P
I guess I like Irish accents, but I've only ever heard them on tv which isn't the best example. I've grown up with so much American and British TV that the mild accents sound normal. I want to hear a strong American accent in person, and more broad Aussie accents, I rarely hear them locally lol.
-
Definitely Scottish. :)
Just to share - I have a college mate who has a perfect american accent but also have fluent accent in French and Bahasa Indonesia. I always find it intriguing to hear her speak and switch languages & accents with so much ease! (she's Indonesian born and raised, high schooled in an american international school and dad's french).
-
^.^ very happy to see lots of people love french accent ;)
Well I love anglo-saxon accent : I mean Bristish, American, Australian, Canadian very very cute when people speak in french as well as the german accent, I love, in french it is really lovely too!!
Accents are really cutest thing which have to be protected :) :) many times thanks to the accent, you begin nice discussion with people. ^.^ ^.^
