How many siblings do you have?
Well, it's rather interesting in my case. If you asked me 6 months ago, I would have said one. My older brother was the only one.
Then, I discovered I have an even older half-sister back in May. (Same mother.) Talk about being absolutely stunned! :faint: Kind of shook things up for me, I will admit.
And I'm still processing the idea because it was such a revelation. (I literally got a whopping headache that first day, as it felt like my head got a mental Thanksgiving-sized meal of information all at once.) But I'm steadily getting to know her a bit, and she finally knows her origins. How cool is that? She had been looking for decades.
Also, I was never going to have a sister-in-law or nieces/nephews because of my brother's perpetual bachelor status. I had to give that idea up long ago. All of a sudden, I have two nieces and a nephew.
So now, my answer is two siblings. :)
How about you?
-
Three brothers -- I always had to play with ponies by myself lol
-
I have a younger brother and a younger sister (technically half-brother and half-sister; same mother). My brother is 14 (ten years younger than me) and my sister will be 16 next month (eight years younger than me). We all get along well and my brother is pretty much my twin when it comes to personality and interests, even down to the fact that he's a huge nerd.
-
1 brother 10 years older then me.
-
Just one unless you count the one in heaven that I never met because he or she died before he or she was born.
-
My story is a lot like Stomper's. I grew up only thinking I had a younger sister. Then about 13 years ago now my mom called me and said I had a half-brother and he's found us. I didn't know what to think, knowing my mom has kept this secret from me and my sister for so long. My dad knew about it when he married her. Apparently she had gotten pregnant as a teen and gave her child up for adoption since the father wanted nothing to do with her or the baby.
So now I know I'm not the oldest sibling and I have a brother and two nephews.
-
6 siblings, I fall in the middle. Most are half siblings and I remember in elementary school when they ask you to draw your family I drew all my half siblings and the teacher looked at my drawing and told me "you don't have that many brothers and sisters" I tried explaining that they were my brothers and sisters and they would live with us during the summer. Then the worst possible thing a teacher could tell a child "Well they don't really count as brothers and sisters" how awful. my older sister was always very bitter toward me and I can't help but wonder if she was told the same thing as a child and maybe grew up thinking that and maybe that was why she was kind of mean to me. :/
I think your family is who you think your family is, full, half, adopted, honorary, friends, family is family.
Then like a few of you stated above I had a younger sister (she passed away in 2013) who was the child of an affair and my mother and father never told me. She reached out to my when I was in middle school, her mom had told her everything where as I had been kept in the dark the whole time. I remember thinking well we got 5 already whats 1 more when I met her. At the time I didn't understand that she was the "different" one because the other siblings were where dad was married then divorced, she was the product of an affair.
-
Half-sisters, a few of them! We only ever met when we were little ones.
I'd love to meet up with them now that we're older, I'm sure we would have a lot more to say. :)
-
I have one sister, who is 4 years older than me.
-
Just one unless you count the one in heaven that I never met because he or she died before he or she was born.
I am an only child but my other siblings are in heaven too. My mom tried that's all I could say, it just wasn't in the cards for her. :/
-
I think they count. They existed, whether it was a long time after birth, or only a short time before birth.
-
I only have a younger sister, but my dad is the oldest of seven brothers.
-
I have 3. 2 half sisters and a brother. My sisters have a sister who is my age that I call my not-sister. She has nothing to do with me really, and I didn't even meet her until I was like 15 or 16 but we do talk a bit now.
My dad has a crazy sibling make up. So he has 13 brothers and sisters that his mum had, and he was related to. But when he was in his 40s, he found out that his biological dad had divorced his mum when he was a baby and then married her sister. So the guy he always knew as his uncle was actually his dad, and his cousins were all his brothers and sister too. So there are like 6 of those, plus a few step siblings too. So weird, and redneck :P
-
Half, step, adopted, foster... they are all family and count as siblings! How wretched of that teacher to say otherwise, Ufox!
I have a brother - 1 year and 9 months younger. He's awesome.
-
Four. A sister, stepsister, half sister, and half brother. The half sister is on my mom's side and the half brother and stepsister are on my dad's.
-
I have one brother, and two half brothers, somewhere. I've been looking for them most of my life, but in secret, because my dad (their father) is terrified that they think he abandoned them, when his mom basically told him to never contact them again. :( I hope someday I'll find them! they changed their last name though, so going off of first names and dates of birth aren't working >_<
-
Then the worst possible thing a teacher could tell a child "Well they don't really count as brothers and sisters" how awful. my older sister was always very bitter toward me and I can't help but wonder if she was told the same thing as a child and maybe grew up thinking that and maybe that was why she was kind of mean to me. :/
I think your family is who you think your family is, full, half, adopted, honorary, friends, family is family.
That's horrible!
I remember once, during a time when I was very very angry, I said to my little brother and sister that we weren't really siblings because their father wasn't my father. I was extremely bitter at the time, knowing that I'd never grow up with a father like they did and it hurt me to know that. My step-dad (their dad) always treated me like his own though, so I had no reason to be angry or upset. So, as far as I'm concerned, the both of them are my full brother and sister!
I totally agree with you though! My besties are my sisters and brothers too. They say you can't choose your family, but I beg to differ. ^.^
-
Wow, Stomper and Bluerose- that would be crazy finding out after so long that you have siblings out there!
I have two sisters...
-
that's actually an odd question for me too, growing up I would have said 1, my half neither that lived with me. he was 10 years older..the one that died this spring :(
but i also have an older half brother and sister that live in Iowa, and a younger full brother who was given up for adoption at birth, and now that my dad has remarried i guess i have to claim a stepsister as well? so uh... not sure how to count all that lol, i guess in my heart i would say none, the only one that ccounted is gone :(
-
I am lucky to be the only child :dance2:
-
I have one older sister, she's six years older than me. Like a couple of others here, I would have had another. She would have been born before my oldest sister. So clearly I wasn't around, but it breaks my heart so much thinking about it.
-
I have one older brother by three years. But my husband has four sisters! Three older, one younger. And there is a 20-year difference between the oldest and youngest. :faint:
-
One sister here, and we get along much better at a distance xD.
-
I have four brothers that are 15+ years older than I am. Eldest brother is 23 years older than I am.
-
I voted for one when I should have voted for 5...
I have a stepsister who I am close with (who I counted), but also 4 other half-siblings (1 girl with one woman and 3, twin boys and a girl with another) by my biological father. I don't know them, just know of them.
-
I put 2. I have a younger sister (2.5 years younger) who I have a tentative relationship with. And I have a younger step-brother :)
-
I have 2 siblings. I'm the oldest at 23. I have a 20 year old sister and a 16 year old brother.
-
None :) I never wanted one when I was small either, getting a younger sibling used to be my biggest fear, lol! I didn't want to share my parents ;)
Now that I'm older I wish I had a sibling, though...
-
That's a complicated question. It depends on who you want to count. For the first 14 years of my life, I only had one. Then I gained 3 steps who did live with us through the rest of school. I also had three other steps on the other side, but they were much older and never lived with us. What's more, both my dad and stepmom have since died and I'm not really in contact with her children for the most part.
I ended up picking 4 as the number.
-
I was an only child until I was nearly 13, but I have two younger half siblings now who are 1 and 5
-
Three half brothers 1 2 years older 1 11 years younger and one 13 years younger
-
A sister and brother--both younger. My sister and I have a huge age gap between us.
-
One half-brother who's 9 years older than me. I always felt like an only child though, because of the age difference.
-
Just one for me. I have a younger brother :)
-
One, my big sister a week away from being exactly two and a half years apart. We're pretty close and have been since we were kids. Even though we're both mid-late twenties, I still call her up when I need advice.
-
As far as I'm concerned, I have one younger sister that I really love and respect. She's a really kind, polite and incredibly awesome person there is, and I really couldn't have asked for a more wonderful sibling.
Now I said "as far as I'm concerned", because my parents are currently in separation: my dad moved out a couple years back and we haven't heard from him since. Not too long ago I heard from some sources that he has someone on the side, so it's quite possible that by now I may have a younger half-brother/half-sister that I don't know of yet...
-
5 sisters, 1 brother. Mom kept trying for her own boy. Didn't happen.
-
I have one sister who's 5 years younger than me. We've always been close and gotten on really well, although we live in two different cities now and we're both married, and have different groups of friends, and lives so we don't get to see each other that much. But when we do we still get on really well and have a great time together! And our two husbands get on well as well so that helps!

Heh, I'm not really sure which to vote for...
I'm my mother's only child, and I never grew up with any other siblings. However, I do have an older half-brother that's.. I don't even know how many years there are between us, to be honest. But there's a very large age gap between us, anyway - plus he lives an hour or so away, so I don't see him very often; we basically live seperate lives. So in a way I'm basically an only child, heh.
I also technically have another half-brother, but he died before I was born. So I'm not sure if he'd count or not :/
6 siblings, I fall in the middle. Most are half siblings and I remember in elementary school when they ask you to draw your family I drew all my half siblings and the teacher looked at my drawing and told me "you don't have that many brothers and sisters" I tried explaining that they were my brothers and sisters and they would live with us during the summer. What an awful thing to tell someone (especially a child) :( Sorry to hear that, Fox.
-
I just have one 1/2 brother, same mom but different dads. I grow up though as an only child as my parents were separated when I was very young. Only saw by brother a few time each year.
-
One brother! No halves/heavens/oopses/unknowns.
-
I count all mine. Siblings count even if they are half! They are still a sibling, still another person from the same parent. I grew up in the same house with my half siblings (one full) and I might knock someone out if they told me my sisters weren't my sisters or don't count. haha. I'm as close and sometimes closer to my half siblings as my full sibling.
-
Technically I have five but I usually just say three; my parents had me and one sister, they divorced and each remarried. Dad's kids I don't know at all sadly so don't really count them (never met my brother and my sister I only saw once when she was a baby). My two other half sisters I grew up with and am very close to.
-
Two sisters and a brother. I'm the eldest. :)
-
Two, a brother and sister, both younger.
-
I have one brother, and today is his birthday!
-
Just one unless you count the one in heaven that I never met because he or she died before he or she was born.
I am an only child but my other siblings are in heaven too. My mom tried that's all I could say, it just wasn't in the cards for her. :/
I'm another who has a sibling in heaven.
Love pkw xxx
-
I have two older brothers. The three of us are like best friends. We travel together. None of us are married nor have kids and we enjoy the freedom to just pack up and go.
-
None! I'm an only kid.
-
Just one, a sister almost nine years younger than me. She's also technically a half-sister, but I never liked the term. There's nothing "half" about us, were family and that's that. We get along great, she also collects ponies and likes to draw. I think she might even follow me to veterinary school, the little pest
-
I am an only, but through hubby I have 5 (half-)siblings-in-law.
In the truest sense of "siblings" hubby is an only child, but he has 5 half-siblings (2 on mom's side and 3 on dad's).
Well, if you're only talking about human siblings that it. Growing up I had 4 dogs, 2 cats, fish, and a horse for siblings.
-
I'm an only child if you don't count the dogs!
-
I have a sister who's six years older than me. Also three stepsisters.
-
I have a sister, two years younger. Wouldn't trade her for the world <3
-
I have one brother :) He is 19 months younger than me. We are very close though. He has moved out to Chicago so I don't get to see him as much :(
-
I marked only child. I grew up an only child. My older brother was stillborn.
My father accidentally had another child when I was 25 so that's a .5 sister. I just can't count her as the situation is not one I can accept to this day. Sad face.
-
I have four, two older and two younger, though I am closer in age to my older brother, 4 yrs between us the others are both 9+ years away in age.
-
3 brothers. One younger and 2 older. One of my brothers died when he was 11 but I always still count him because he is my brother and always will be. :)
Oh and 4 step siblings. 3 step sisters and 1 step brother.
-
Three brothers -- I always had to play with ponies by myself lol
Same!
-
I have one brother who's 3 years older than me.
-
I have a sister who's almost exactly one year younger than me,
my dad and his GF wanted to have a baby but she had an emergency surgery because of tumors and had her uterus removed :'( we would've loved a half-brother or sister
-
I have three siblings! I'm the second oldest. I have an older brother, a younger sister, and a baby brother. Though technically we're all adults now. My sister is my favorite of the bunch. <3
-
I have an older sister and two older brothers. :) I have 13 nieces and nephews!
-
I grew up an only child and only grandchild. I do have (at least) three half-siblings, two older sisters and one younger brother. We all have different mothers though and I did not even know about my younger brother until about 2006. I have since met my sisters and their moms, but I have only talked to my brother.
-
I have two sisters and one brother. All are much younger than I am. There's seven years between me and one sister, 12 and a half years between me and my other sister and over 19 years between me and my brother.
-
None >.> ...oh wait an older brother (who I don't speak to).
-
I have just the one brother. I'm pretty boring and basic in this category.
-
I have 3 little brothers.
-
I'm an only child and I've always wanted to have an older brother, or any kind of sibling tbh. I do have two younger cousins, but I wish we were closer. I'm always kinda jealous of my friends who have siblings, especially if they are close and get along well :P
-
Due to my father's fondness for marriage I have the following:
One elder half sister
Twin elder step brothers
One younger full brother
One younger Step-Brother
-
I have a younger sister. :)
-
I have one younger brother and four step siblings from my father's second marriage. I usually ignore my step siblings, when asked about my siblings because we did not grew up together, I was already in my twenties, when they came to my life. I have nothing against them, they are nice people, but I just can't think/see them as my siblings at any level.
-
I have a half big sis and a half big bro.... so i'm the "little baby".
I gift ponies for my nieces
-
It looks like having half-siblings is quite common. Myself, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that I always had an older sister but this information was kept from me for 37 years. (Probably would have been forever if I hadn't used 23andme.com for unrelated reasons. I'm more bewildered than upset, though.)
-
Im the oldest of 5. We all pretty much have different dads so fathers day is a hassle-w e didnt really celebrate that growing up! @_@ In order....one half brother and half sister share the same dad but same mom as me living up in Indiana, and in Florida one stepsister (adopted) living with biological mom in FL(she was my real dads) , and one *cough*evil*cough**cough* half brother (my biological dads son) living in FL with my adopted stepsister and her mom. Its complicated and we are still trying to get along. It never works out well, especially since my real dads not around anymore things get ugly.
Ive always wanted it to be just me, my real mom, and my real dad. No other siblings. I wish my mom would have wanted to move with him to FL when my real dad got the job offer in Winterhaven, FL after I was born. My dad like the idea of us living near Disney, im sooo surprised my mom wanted to stay living near her family instead *sigh*
I also have two sister-in-laws if that counts! I love them to death!
-
I am the oldest of my parents' 7 kids!! YAY!! Seriously, I love them all and wish I was a tough enough lady to have a big family myself. I always feel bad for only children, but when I was a kid there were MANY days I wished I was one XD.
I come from big families. My grandma had 20 siblings. I guess half were half siblings. Her mom married my widower great-grandpa who already had 11 kids and then she had 10. I have 42 first cousins and 22 aunts and uncles. I <3 big families :) Buuuuuut I am only having my 2 boys (feels like 8). ;)

I honestly think you're taking this really well given the circumstances. I can understand why you're upset; it's like you have the right to know what children your parents have had! And all those years have passed when you could have had at least some bonding time. I'm glad that you're excited for nieces and nephews. :o) I hope that things go well as you establish your relationship with her.
(On the flip side, try dealing with having a half sibiling at an age when society is pressuring you to have (or already have had) your own children. It's quite difficult to accept a 25 year age gap! I think I'm "winning" at this time with that much of an age difference! urgh.)
-
technically 3.
Older sister and brother through my bio dad. Met them when I was really young, be damned if I remember their names. The brother tried to contact me 15-20 years ago, but I just have no interest in connecting to relatives, so never got back to him.
Then a brother younger than me through my mother. I've lived with that one.
-
I guess though since I'm adopted I probably do have half-siblings out there. I'm not so inclined to meet my biological parents, but I'd be curious to see what the half-sibs are like. Still, it's not enough for me to go track them down.
-
I have one little brother, who seems to hate mlp, but I think he wants to seem "manly". :silly:
-
I have 1 younger sister. I picked 1 but technically I have a step brother and a step sister now since my dad remarried last week. I haven't met them yet since my dad lives in Europe and I'm in Canada. It's very strange to think about having new siblings at 31 years old. I just hope they don't have more kids because that would be crazy weird.
-
3 sisters, all older than me. :)
-
I have three brothers and three sisters, but I was the youngest and my older sisters and brothers feel more like aunts. I was an aunt by the time I was three and a great aunt before I was 30.
-
I have three, Two brothers, one older, one younger and a younger sister. The age gap between oldest and youngest is seven years.
I can make it more complicated if i want. Moms boyfriend who she's been with for the last ten years has two kids. I never count them as siblings as mom and her boyfriend have never lived together, but in a way they are step-siblings.
Dad is engaged to another women since ten years also and she has a bunch of kids. However, I've only met the youngest and that was two times more than 8 years ago so I don't count them at all.
-
I think you are taking the "new old sibling" thing really well too. I get new old siblings now and again when my siblings marry :) So far its been great and I love my in-laws but one is a waste of skin (junkie/thief/abuser). Its amazing what an impact it can have on your life. It can change your whole family dynamic.
Is she excited about having siblings? I try to imagine what it might feel like from her perspective, maybe even a bit of jealousy that you were kept while she was given up. It must be really complicated for all of you.
-
Officially I am an only child. Some years ago though I heard rumors about at least one sibling. I did not find out anything yet, my parents are very strict and dont tell me anything; they dont want to talk about that topic and I dont have anyone who I can ask... so I secretly hope, if there really IS somebody who is my sibling they will hopefully contact me one day!
-
Wow, there are some amazing stories and complicated relationships in this thread…
Here's my weird one!
I am the fourth child of my parents combined children.
My fathers third and my mothers second.
And their first one together.
So, I have three beloved older siblings, two brothers who are the same age but they are not twins or even blood related ( One from dad one from mom ) and an older sister.
My brothers and I lived in the same home but my sister lived with her mother ( who is also the mother of one of my brothers, they are "full" siblings )
I love them all sooo much and I honestly miss them almost all the time.
It made me so angry when anyone would say half siblings did not count as real siblings, because alongside my parents they were the most important people in my life.
There are six and eight years between us.
My brother and sister also have another brother and sister on their mothers side, the sister is younger than me and we used to always call each other "Quarter sisters" ;)
My other brother has another sister the same age as me whom I have never met and he has only met her once.
I think he would like to know her better but they have had no contact since childhood unfortunately.
I also have a non-blood sister who used to babysit me a lot as a child.
She was in the same class as my two brothers and my family was like her bonus family when she was younger so we spent a lot of time together growing up.
I see her as a sister also even though we are not technically related by blood or by law.
Sorry for babbling on…
I was just always a weird kid, I had learning disabilities and got bullied in school quite a bit.
So for me, my siblings were not only my family but also my best friends and protectors.
-
WOW that's quite a story Sukiele!
-
I voted 6+. My mom has 5 girls including me. My dad has a couple of kids, I know 2 half brothers but didn't grow up with them. My older sister and closest younger sister also have half siblings their dads' side.
-
None.
And no possible half siblings; my mother was about my age when she married and my father isn't much older, my mother had fertility problems and had to undergo hormone therapy to have just the one child and my father only had one girlfriend before he met my mother when he was about fifteen.
AND no cousins on my mother's side, I have an uncle but he's never even been on a date. I do have four cousins on my dad's side, but only two are biological cousins since the other two are the children of his adopted sibling, though I've never had very much contact with any of them since the only one of his siblings my dad gets along with is also the only one not to have children.
I always feel bad for only children.
Oh, don't feel bad for us, there are some people who don't have the temperment to grow up in the same house as another person; I know I've always needed a bit of alone time and still do....not to mention my education cost a fortune
-
One sister who is 8 years younger then me.
-
I'm my Mum's only but the eldest of dad's four girls.
-
I'm an only child ...and on my mothers side I am an only grandchild as well  :faint:
but my gran was one of 7 (the other 6 were half bro and sis from her mom and her first hubby who died in WW1,her mom remarried later and had Nan when she was in her 40's I believe) , my mom is one of 3, my dad one of 7 and my hubby one of 7
Dad wanted more kids but Mom decided that one was enough after she had me ...hmmmm not sure how to take that  I'm the last in the line when it comes to mom's family. I think she did try for kids before being able to have me though
-
Just one unless you count the one in heaven that I never met because he or she died before he or she was born.
I am an only child but my other siblings are in heaven too. My mom tried that's all I could say, it just wasn't in the cards for her. :/
Same. My parents tried for a long time to have me and prior to that my mum had a miscarriage when she didn't even know she was pregnant (though she wanted to be pregnant) so it seems quite the feat that they managed to make me at all. My mum has had various readings and such with mediums and they always say she has two children, an older boy and a younger girl. I'll admit that I feel like I should have a brother. My mum said if she had a boy he would have been called Daniel... so yeah, I've been known to get a bit upset about the brother I should have had. It's hard to explain but I feel some sort of connection that makes it real. I don't know if that makes sense... I even have a picture of him in my mind (the men in our family look a lot alike so that's pretty easy). I haven't really told anyone about that other than my husband and close friends... it just sort of came out just now :)
-
I think that is it a beatiful thing to count those siblings as well.
When I was very little, and my older siblings were in school I had an imaginary friend whom I always played with, I called her "air fairy" XD
I played with her for years and my parents did not really mind because, as I said before I was always kind of strange and did not have many friends besides my siblings.
One day my mother did ask me about Air Fairy, who was she exactly?
I told her she was a year older than me and that I knrw her all my life and since before I was born.
She asked how I could have known her before I was born and I just casually said " Oh, we met in the cave of life. She is your daughter too and she wanted to come here but she had to stay so now she just visits us in the air, like a fairy!" And then happily continued playing.
Not until years after when I was much older did my mother tell me about her misscarrige and how impactful that silly conversation had been for her.
I can not say I get visits from Air Fairy anymore, but I remember the childhood games quite clearly.
Who knows? I say if they count in our hearts that is what matters.
-
Awww those were very sweet and yet saddening stories. Almost had me in tears here oops... Awwww. Just beautiful
-
I have one half-sister who is 16 years older than me.
-
So many of you have such interesting stories! I'm the eldest of two. My sister is 20 months younger than me, but I can't say that we are close at all.
-

That is definitely an interesting story! I had a miscarriage a year or two before I had my daughter. And several times I remember having dreams about having 2 little girls...one with blonde hair and one with darker hair. My daughter has dark blonde hair. It makes me wonder.........

I have 2 younger half brothers (same Dad) we are quite close and I am Mum's only one so I think I kind of have the best of both worlds, I have siblings and I get my mum all to myself! I also have 4 girl cousins that I grew up that are like sisters to me - I think I'm very lucky :)

I'm an only child, unless you wanna count my dog as a sibling
My mother was one of four, though, and my father was one of three.

Two older brothers,
Fairly noticeable age gap between us I was born in 92, and they were born in 83 and 80 respectively
My mum though was one of six and my dad is one of three

I've got a big sister, a big brother, then there's me, and a younger sister. ^.^

I have two younger siblings we were not very close growing up. I am closer now to one but the other not so much. Guess that's life. :P
-
I have two younger sisters. I'm not hugely close to them but I hope we will be one day :)
Beautiful stories about brothers and sisters you never got to meet who are in heaven. A few friends of mine have had miscarriages and even though some people seem to think it's no big deal, to them (and me) it is and it's beautiful to think they might get to meet their lost family members in heaven someday.

Two brothers, the older brother passed away at the age of 16. The younger one is MUCH younger... 15 years to be exact. He is in college now. He's the one that got me into G4 MLP through the show. He is a closet Brony. :accomplished:

Its just me. I don't have any and never will. My mom should of not of been able to get pregnant at all but she did with me :)

I promptly answered 2, it have been the default answer for 29 years (my younger brother is 29 yo, my sis is 31 and I'm... older :P ), but then I proceeded to read the posts of everyone else and realized I actually forgot the 2 years old half-brother that I have now o.o
I'm not sure how troublesome it is, considering that he actually calls me "aunt" and we barely see each other.

My big bro who generusly bought me the Princess Rainbow Castle for my birthday. Ahhh, with him I don't need any more siblings. ; A;

Only one.
Annoying little rat, too.
