I do believe most manga have age ratings like movies. Kaoskat  has a point there are many many genre of manga what are some of your daughters interest and things she likes to read about.

Vampire Knight is one I know. It should be fine for a 12 year old I would think. The violence is very mild really and the themes aren't anything that should really be a problem either. It's one of my favorites actually. It has been made into an anime too. If you wanted, I'm sure you could find a few episodes to watch online to get an idea of what it's like before buying it.

Vampire Knight is rated T+ (older teen)
However you can preview the manga here : http://www.vizmanga.com/reader/53

Card Captor Sakura is a great series to introduce some common themes seen in anime and manga, and is a fantastic series in its own right and is very age appropriate.  The series was released a few years ago in 4 omnibus editions.  Here is a link to volume 1.

She might like
-fruit basket
-shugo chara
-mamotte lollipop (save me lollipop)
-tsubasa
-ouran high school host club

All titles under a similar genre that I read myself around that age when I was reading vampire knight.

Also someone aristocratic titles that she might like
-kuroshitsuji (black butler)
-Rosen maiden
-pandora hearts
-Alice in the country of hearts (this series is based of a dating game in Japan and has many spin off manga series with similar names)

I second cardcaptor sakura :D Its very appropriate for her age and gets addicting pretty quick.

There is an anime for it as well--actually the English version of it aired when I was a teenager so it goes to show it should be ok for a 12 year old :)

I don't know how accessible the manga is stateside, but Sailor Moon would be another great choice! They just rereleased the anime with updated subtitles and it's lovely!

Oh thanks for posting this! I didn't realize they re-released it- the originals got so expensive!

I second or third the recommendation for Cardcaptor Sakura!  Pretty, cute, sweet, good story and age appropriate-

I agree with: Card Captor Sakura - Tokyo Mew Mew - Fruits Basket - Sailor Moon - Snow Fairy Sugar

Vampire Knight starts off mild but it does get more violent and bloody as the story progresses.  Not sure if I would let my 12 year old follow that ...

I second all over these suggestions especially Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Fruits Basket, and Cardcaptor Sakura. All awesome series :) Also any of the Pretty Cure series, Jewelpet, and Ojamajo Doremi.

I rarely read manga, but it sounds as though you have some good suggestions here!

I recommend checking out the Christian Anime Alliance - while created with Christians in mind, the website has excellent reviews for believers and non-Christians alike, allowing parents to make informed decisions about their children's manga or anime interests. Because the reviews are done by volunteers, not all titles have written reviews.
Not trying to spread religion around, just making a suggestion about what I believe is an excellent review site.

Definitely Tokyo Mew Mew and Fruits Basket! :D CLAMP School Detectives is good too, but I'm not sure how easy it is too find? It's somewhat obscure, heh.

Also any of the Pretty Cure series, Jewelpet, and Ojamajo Doremi.

I know there was a manga adaptation of Ojamajo Doremi, but did it ever get translated into English? :o

Yeah I havent read them but it looks like a few have manga series like Smile and Fresh.

Whoops I thought it had  ^^; Nevermind. Though the anime is also really good so I recommend it if she ever gets into anime :)

Hana-Kimi is also another good one. I could come up with a pretty big list. I have a collection of about 1,500 volumes of manga. Somewhere around that. I know I have well over a thousand.
So here is what I'd look into:

Hana-Kimi
Tokyo Mew Mew
Sugar: A Little Snowfairy (I've really only seen the anime though....)
Imadoki!
Alice 19th
Kitchen Princess (A VERY GOOD ONE for her age! Fantastic, underrated manga)
Aishiteruze Baby
Full Moon (o Sagashite)
Merupuri
Happy Happy Clover (more for young kids but I LOVED it. It's adorable for an animal lover)
W Juliet
Tail of the Moon
Fall in Love Like a Comic

That's all I can think of right now. I think these all may be age appropriate. A lot of people recommended Fruits Basket but I personally lost interest after a while. I LOVE the anime, though.

Is she more into action or more romance? Personally, I like more action then romace...
If it's more girly stuff, she may like Maid-Sama. I don't recall there being anything "bad" in it. Misaki is the student body president of a recently turned co-ed high school. Basically the school has the reputation of being the "bad kids" and she tries to change the reputation and get more female students to enroll. However she has a secrete, the works at a maid cafe to support her family. Tamaki Usui is the "cool" boy and he finds out about her job and in order for him to keep quite, she has to let him tag along with her.
it has an anime as well but it only follows the first 1/2 of the story.

i guess i'm curious as to what you are ok with exposing her to?
and what novel or books has she read?
that's s great place to start.

alot of the series mentioned are great! and i love them, but i wouldn't let my niece read them if she was that age.
it depends alot on the sensitivity of the child and what you're ok with her reading.

i like vampire knights, but the hints of insest really bothered me. where series like sailor moon (also love) all the girls have very very short skirts etc. also how obsessed with boys should the characters be?

Shucks.  The ones I was going to recommend aren't released in the US. Boo.  There is some good stuff out there though a lot of people have made some great suggestions.

Some of the ones I read at her age are:
Angelic Layer
Saint Tail (it is older, but if you can find it it is adorable!)
Cardcaptor
Sailor Moon
Fruits Basket
Magic Knight Rayearth
Yu-Gi-Oh

Some newer ones that I would highly suggest for her age range:
Kingdom Hearts manga (It's half Disney so you know it can't get too out of control lol)
The Legend of Zelda manga series
xxxHolic (don't let the triple X in the title mislead you, it isn't what you think)
Tsubasa
Tiger & Bunny
.Hack
Pokemon

Reading over what you've gotten so far, it sounds like a lot of wonderful suggestions :D

Thanks guys you really have all been a huge help,My daughter has a very broad reading range and will read anything in the school library.I have in fact just sign a form so the school will allow her to read books up to the age of 14.She has read many of the popular series such as Harry potter,Lord of the rings,Hunger Games I gave her my Twilight books but she hated them lol and I have just given her the mortal instruments series. My concerns would be buying her anything that has strong sexually themes.

I think I should give you a far warning that the mortal instruments being a series about modern older teenagers has sex scenes never do they explain anything in detail but it's implied.

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned it, but one of my fave manga series is Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch :)

What sort of things is your daughter into?? A lot of the ones people have recommended are very girly ones with heavy focus on romance. To sort of offset that i'd recommend maybe Naruto or Dragonball (both hugely popular) or one that i loved, Hikaru no go which is about a school boy learning to play the game of Go :)

No one has mentioned Inuyasha yet, right? I remember buying a few volumes for my sister when she was about that age. I like the anime series myself.

One other series I think we should all be ashamed for not recommending earlier....

If you are not up on the anime and manga scene much yourself, Hayao Miyazaki is considered the greatest animation film director in Japan, with his films receiving praise from not just anime fans, but the General public.  Nauscaa was an original work of his, began in the 1980s and was the inspiration for his first solo film that led to the creation of his film studio, Studio Ghibli.

Particularly if she is reading some more mature themed books such as The Hunger Games, I think she should be able to handle the more complex themes in this book.

inuyasha, naruto and dragonball. while all series i like are pretty violent. and the stories can take along time.
and i know i'm still scarred by nausicaa of the wind.

Hikaru no go. is a great series about becoming passionate at something and putting yourself out there, but isn't something for everyone.
i like yugioh- but the original series is way dark! gx is much tamer, but takes a long time to develop
I think I should give you a far warning that the mortal instruments being a series about modern older teenagers has sex scenes never do they explain anything in detail but it's implied.
agreed on this as well. i like the series, but was only willing to finish it after my friend told me a few spoilers.

the important thing is that you know her best and know what she's interested in and what level of emotional stress she can handle.
sometimes with manga, the same theme as a written book can be much more damaging, because of the added visual aspect. and always be wary of the potential of authors doing something just for shock value.

Oh my goodness, me too...while there might not be sexual content, there are some very scary/disturbing situations and upsetting choices that characters have to make.  Depending on how seriously you take it.  It is hard to explain, hmm.  It is much darker than the movie.  I really liked reading it, and I will definitely read it again, but it hit me right in the feels!

Yotsuba&! might be a possible choice - it is about a little girl and her dad and their neighbors who include 3 girls of various ages.  It is a "slice-of-life" comedy.  Very pretty to look at, funny, relaxing.  Nothing sexual or anything else questionable.  Not sure how appealing it would be to a 12 yo?  My library has them, you might be able to have a quick flip through it (or any other suggestions!) at yours.  :)
