Title: What's the deal with the new Princesses??
Post by: Salli on November 06, 2014, 08:12:57 AM
So Princess Gold Lily and Sterling are out. They are pretty and I will buy them but what's the deal with them? And why are their cutie marks so weird/random? I feel like previous gen ponies had so much thought put into them. These just make no sense to me. I am glad to see non-mane 6 brushables though.

Salli I think they ARE just completely random.  They decided, "hey kids like princesses" and so slapped some random colors on the princess mold and cranked them out (to be sold with a repeat mane 6)

There is no story line, no tie-in with the cartoon, no explanation whatsoever for these princesses.  I think it is rather weird, but I guess at LEAST they didn't just make all of the mane 6 ponies princesses (which I'm SURE they considered)

I too am happy to see some variety, but it would have been nice if they'd tried a little harder with these two...

So strange.  I am thinking about buying 2 of each just to paint the second pair with cutie marks that ACTUALLY MATCH THEIR NAMES.

"Children like princesses, lets make more!" "Make more..? There aren't any other princesses in the show right now.."
"Show? Who cares about princesses needing to be on the show! We can make the toys first and figure the show out LATER!"
"...If you say so..." "I do. Now, get to it!"
"What about their cutie marks?" "Whatever you want! It's a princess! She can be whatever she wants!"
And that's how they were made. :D

I'll probably pick these ponies up, but their cutie marks really are quite boring...

I know, right?  I saw them in person and surprised myself by passing on them.  I find the random, one-colour symbols, and the non-matching wings just look....like not a lot of thought was put in to them.  To be fair, they are $16.99 each here, so that was a big factor too.  If they were either cheaper, or nicer looking, it could have been a different story.  I do love the body/hair colour combinations, though =)

Yeah, anymore, I really don't think they put any thought into their toys' designs, which is sad. In G1, they had such a hit, but now it's a miss.

I might get them, but then again, I'm not super in love with their designs. Maybe if they go on sale eventually.

Yeah, even at the 14.99 price tag at TRU it seems a bit much, especially since the second pony included is one most people are guaranteed to already have. Thank goodness for Shopkick. I did pick up Gold Lily today though... I'll get Sterling later.

Yeesh, they make a couple of random fakie-looking princess figures, package them with the 549th version of Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy, and expect them to sell for $15?!  Hasbro, what are you smoking?

Don't get me wrong, now that Gold Lily is out of her package she's really beautiful. I love her colors, I just wish her cutie mark were a little more interesting... and maybe a different color around her hooves, and a gradient in her wings. :) But I definitely could have used anything other than yet another Pinkie. XD

$14.99 is pretty high-  they are only $12.99 at Target and also at the Hasbrotoyshop.com.  I don't know why TRU is always so much more expensive, I guess they bump up their prices so that the "sales" look better...

I wish they werent in Celestia size, they would have been so much cuter in cadance/luna size. Their colors are so stunning though! I really like them, but their cutie marks are really random and weird  :P I wish they werent so expensive hopefully theres a black friday sale.

i haven't seen them in person, yet, but if i do end up liking their size i might end up with at least princess gold lily. i'm glad i stopped by this thread, though, because they're at least 12.99 at target. i have to say i'm not too keen on these new princesses being sold with more pinkie pies and fluttershies.

You guys are lucky I think they're about $20USD here. I agree about their symbols though not much thought has gone in to their design

I hate when they make us buy ANOTHER mane 6 pony with them.

One more gripe to the list: Why are these ladies tall alicorns like Celestia and yet Luna is still shorter???????

I don't mind simplicity at all (its wayyyyyyy better than the silly 'rainbowfied' nonsense) but I wish Gold Lily had a lily cutie mark and Sterling had something silvery with silver hair? They also don't have stories on the back of the box and I wish they did. Like "Princess Gold Lily loves flowers!" or SOMETHING.

I agree that their symbols look a little half-hearted, but you have to remember that most of the G1s were never in the show, either.  I can't speak for the other gens, as I haven't watched anything besides the original series, but it doesn't phase me at all that these ponies seem to have come from nowhere.

A Walmart near me had them for $12.99 also. I picked up just Lily for now.

I do know they're not very popular amongst some in "that" side of the community. ;)

Lol. I'm going to go grab Lily in a bit. I feel like her cutie mark looks like a valentine's post mark. Also, her pink wings make me think that the fur/feathers got ripped off of them, leaving pink skin. Or maybe she was sunburned. I do like that she's yellow and I like her hair colors. They remind me of the g1 rainbow ponies and at least they don't have their lame cutie marks on their eyes.

Sorry, but why does it matter if they aren't in the show? Tons of the G1 and G3 ponies were never in the show and I've never seen anyone complain, only more excitement that there was such a wide variety. Now we're offered two new ponies and people are confused/irritated that they don't have show characters? I'm confused.

It seems like the biggest gripe is the lack of creativity behind their symbols more than whether or not they're in the show.  I'm pretty sure most of us are tired of getting mane 6 brushables anyway...at least I am!

Now that I collect G1's, I appreciate the variety of ponies that were offered in previous generations.  I think my main complaint with G4 right now is the lack of differences in poses/molds.

I actually am digging Gold Lily's (? the yellow one?) symbol because it has gears on it like she's a steampunk pony or something.

But something about the size of the symbols seems off, or maybe it's the fact that they're monochrome?

I don't like their wings.  They look like they don't belong.  (Also, no paint on the boots looks pretty cheap.)

I like them well enough, but I can't help but feel that they look like fakies :/ Their colours and cutie marks seem kinda random, and the lack of paint on their boots doesn't help. And why are their wings coloured like that?
I'm, of course, glad to see something other that the mane six, but I think Hasbro could try a little harder on the design.
Title: Re: What's the deal with the new Princesses??

I don't mind non-show characters but I just can't make sense of these gals in the 'Pony World'.

LadyMoondancer, I can dig the gears on Lily but I wish her symbol had a lily or something remotely related to her name. It just looks like a mistake/fakie. I feel like if they were going to have a symbol that doesn't make sense, they should have a story behind it. Maybe I would feel better if I gave her a new name? Heartworks (like the hearts and gears?) Now that I have her in person, I am just adoring her hair even more. She would make a great 'Princess Fluttershy' custom too.

Iceglider, all the kids I know already have 5 Pinkies and they want new characters too XD

I am super happy to see new brushables. Colors are nice and I kinda like the simple symbols. It is reminiscent of G2, as someone mentioned. I even appreciate the randomness of them not being show characters. Sadly though I won't be buying them because I'm not a huge fan of the Celestia mold (or Celestia eyes, for that matter - at least the purple one escaped that). They just...never do it right. :/

As for the names not having anything to do with the symbols - that's really nothing new...I mean think about it - what does the name Pinkie Pie have to do with balloons? There have been ponies with unrelated names and symbols ever since G1. -shrug-

her initials are PP and a capital P looks kind of like a balloon on a string

...yeah, no. Really it's a good practice. Naming ponies after their cutie marks (in a G4 context) always bothers me because they're not supposed to have gotten their cutie mark yet when they're born. I imagine Princess Sterling comes from a long line of British-currency-themed monarchs and so on, dating back to when some fickle public couldn't resist the urge of naming a Queen Crown. (Although her poor cousin, Lady Half-Crown... well.)

Sounds legit.

I haven't gotten these girls yet. I'd feel better about buying them if they were packaged alone. I kinda just suspected that they would eventually show up in the show though. Or maybe they are minor royalty, like Luna and Celestia's cousins' daughters?

I actually like the fact that their cutie marks aren't related to their names - it feels more appropriate for g4, considering in canon the ponies get their marks years after they're named, and through a process that has absolutely nothing to do with their names. Ponies with names that perfectly match their cutie marks (Diamond Tiara, Silverspoon, Peppermint Twist, Cherry Pie, Cupcake, I could go on and on) feel lazy and poorly thought out, like they took a word and slapped together a pony to embody it, rather than actually bothering to develop a character concept and personality. Though perhaps I'm giving hasbro too much credit there.

I'm not so fond of their color schemes (too busy) and I HATE the fact that their cutie marks are on the same side. They're names sound like they're sisters, so it would make sense for them to be displayed with one facing right and the other left, back to back or face to face, not awkwardly staring in the same direction. I guess if I get them I'll style ones hair to cover where her cutie mark would be and display her on her NDS.

Sorry, I'm rambling. But that's my (unneeded) two cents on the new princesses. I do want them, but they're not a big priority for me right now.

I got Princess Gold Lily, I still have to pick up Princess Sterling. Honestly I was just so happy about brushable pony toys of new characters that I didn't give a second thought to wanting them, other than finding it weird that they seemed kind of random. Also I'm really looking forward to some of the Cutie Mark Magic line, since we should get some new characters there. I love the mane six as much as anyone else but I've definitely had enough.

For those of you who shop at Meijer- I saw a pony display that I assume they're waiting to put out until Black Friday. I saw Princess Gold Lily on it, and I assume it has Princess Sterling, but I had no business digging around in that display.

So if you shop there, be sure to keep your eyes peeled if you want these ponies! :)

Personally I didn't entirely care for Princess Gold Lily. She reminds me of mustard.
