Hi,
Has anyone been able to pick up either one of these DVDs yet? Are Rescue from Midnight Castle and Escape from Catrina the cut versions? Is the Escape from Catrina and other adventures the same as what's included in the complete series set?

I don't know if the Escape from Catrina dvd has the same exact episodes or not. I have it, but I wouldn't know if they were cut or not. I haven't seen them since they were on TV in the 80s.

Thanks Buttercreamdream. I'm trying to decide if I want Escape from Catrina and other adventures or the complete series (or both :) ) If the episodes are exactly the same then I'll just get the complete series but if Catrina DVD has them uncut I might get both sets.
If Little Piece of Rainbow is missing from Rescue from Midnight Castle and The Good Old Days is missing from Escape from Catrina they've been cut.

Those aren't the only parts missing from the edited-for-time versions of the specials - the opening theme was cut from RaMC, and both specials are missing their ending themes.

I like how the two parters or more are on one disc. I won't be able to get this set this week but hopefully next week. It stinks, because Monster High Freaky Fusion comes out today too.

I didn't realize the theme was missing also in the edited versions. Does anyone know if the complete series is an online only release? I checked a local store and they only had the Catrina DVD and not the complete series.
I hope we find out soon what version of the specials is on the Catrina DVD. I think it's nice also that the episodes with multiple parts are on one disc.

I have received mine yet so I can't be sure if the episodes are cut, but my fingers are crossed they are complete!

I have a copy of both so I can certainly check to see if they are uncut. I haven't seen Escape from Catrina uncut so I need to know what was cut so I can let y'all know. Was Little Piece of Rainbow the only thing cut from Rescue From Midnight Castle?

I ordered mine from Amazon, paid for two day shipping to have it by today. Got an email this morning from them telling me that they were not able to ship it and now I will have to wait until October 15-17th. Ugh I might have to go to the store and just pick it up!

They do have the opening and ending credits for each episode, even the ones with multiple parts. I think the quality is nice, but I only watched part of Rescue From Midnight Castle and up to the Moochick's part.

Thanks for checking both sets Bowtie. The song Al-1701 mentioned was cut from Catrina. I was really hoping it would be the version with Little Piece of Rainbow left in.
Are any physical stores carrying the complete series? I checked Walmart today and they only had Escape from Catrina and other adventures.

No problem! It was my pleasure! I'll check Catrina, but I'm assuming the song is cut if the one from RFMC was cut as well.
I think the complete series is online only. If Walmart or Target (it says online only on their website) don't have it in stores, I'm guessing it won't be in any stores.
Edit: There was no song other than the baby pony song and the one at the end so it looks like it's the cut version.

So I just ran to Walmart to pick up the escape from catrina dvd. It's definitely the edited for tv version. No good before you turned bad good old days song. Just thought I'd let you guys know!
Walmart did not have the box set. Meijer didn't have either DVDs.

You know, something good to compliment the complete series would be a DVD of the movie and unedited specials.

Thanks everyone that checked the specials to see if they were the cut versions. I was really hoping for an unedited release as well. I'll still be getting the complete series. I checked a few stores today and didn't find it so I think it's an online only release.

If the new complete series release has the uncut versions, then I'll definitely be picking it up. If not, then I won't bother, as I already have the previously-released DVDs that are cut. Which is why I've hung onto the VHS tapes from when I was a kid. ;P

Dang. I was hoping the "other stories" would have the uncut versions. Oh well, maybe they'll take out a movie DVD sometime with the uncut specials and feature length movie.

Disney cut the cliffhangers short to get rid of the "To be continued..." messages.

I can't believe they cut those parts either, they were actually really good. I remember watching Rescue at Midnight Castle on YT as an adult and being like wait, where's that part I love??? So disappointed they didn't make it the uncut version!

I have both of the uncut versions on VHS but I honestly can't recall any differences without rewatching them on VHS. Though my G1 complete series disc set has EFMC and the Catrina one as the first two episodes on disc 1 though, then the Flutter Valley ones. Are there other sets that were made?
Also, some guy makes custom DVD sets, including MLP G1 and tales, and even takes requests. Will post the link once I can find it.

For those of you asking, I found the full series DVD set in store at my Walmart yesterday (in Canada). So it's not online only, at least not here. I didn't even know it was coming out, I went to pick up MH Freaky Fusion and was so happy to see the G1 full series DVD!!!! :happy: :frolic:

Do not doubt I'm one of the few on this, honestly though I'm not fussed about parts being cut. It has been so long since I've seen some of the episodes that truthfully I'm just excited to be able to see them again, cut or not.

So glad I checked this out! In was excited to hear about the DVDs coming out and will let DH know that it is the complete series I wish for for Christmas. Sadly I guess I will hang on to my old vhs copy of Catrina & Midnight Castlemy mom made me decades ago lol. Why can't they release the WHOLE thing? I know I can't be the only fan annoyed buy this. If they could do it with Jem why not MLP? *sigh*

Hasbro gave them the series. Therefore, we got the series version of the specials.
Does the complete series have any bonus features on it?
Not surprisingly no. Shout Factory doesn't do special features most of the time.
Mine just arrived. It looks like it's the Disney cut which is bit disappointing for Shout Factory. However, I got my own legal copy of the original series. Which makes me happy.

I think if you're in the US you have to order the complete series online, I checked several stores for it and had to order it online. Amazon, Target, Walmart and Shout Factory all carry it online.

Even though I knew Rescue at Midnight Castle was cut it was still a little weird just to see the Moochick say "I have a piece of Rainbow somewhere" and see the rabbit handing it to him. I remember noticing it was cut when it aired on the Disney channel but it had been so long since I'd seen the cut version it that it was a little weird to me. That being said I'm still enjoying my DVD set. :)

I saw Escape from Catrina at my local Walmart last week. I have been watching to see if these sets would pop up, but it's really the Complete Series I'm really looking to buy right now. Sad I didn't see it.

OK so my Dad ordered for me on amazon since he has free two day shipping. He and I went to the mall today and at F.Y.E. they did have the complete series and my jaw almost dropped but it was nearly $30 and the one that was sold by amazon my Dad ordered for me was like $21.49. It was even cheaper than Walmart's price which was I think $24.99 or something.
I do have a question and sorry if this has been answered already, besides the order of the episodes is it the same as season one and two of the original DVD release of the series?

I can just see it now - Hasbro claiming there is little interest in G1 due to the low sales figures for the complete series DVD release. But judging from the experiences people on this thread have had, the distribution for the set is really spotty and its exposure to the average store customer is likely quite limited. I mean really... how hard is it to get a DVD title distributed evenly to retailers, and on time? :rolleyes:
Anyhoo... here's hoping that the packaging for the new release, at least, is an improvement over the original 2003 Season 1 set. I cringe every time I take my copy out - the G2 cover art, the terrible low-quality insert art on the 'thinpak' keep cases - it feels more like a bootleg than an official release. :huh:

The DVDs are inside one box/case. The episodes are listed on the inside front cover and inside back cover with the DVDs in the middle. The box and slipcover feature G1 ponies although some of them are not in the series like Starshine and one of the birthflower ponies.
I would be interested in seeing the sales figures too. I see the Escape from Catrina one all the time but never the Complete series except online.

I agree. I am not a fan of G2's but I know there are people who are but I don't like how when there were G1 DVD's they had G2's on there instead. I am so glad they did nice G1 box art for this release.
I got my complete series DVD set in the mail today. :biggrin:

Got the set (complete series) yesterday and after watching "End of Flutter Valley" I decided, that before watching anymore, I'm going to rip the DVDs on my computer and then edit/combine the multipart episodes, so I only have to watch one opening and ending credits per "episode". While this is strictly for personal use only, film industry probably sees me as a horrible criminal. Of course since I live in region 2 and watch region 1 DVDs they probably already see me as such.

Picked up the Complete series today, there is a physical copy at Barnes n Noble. Escape from Catrina has the rep and catrina song gone and the dvds seem a little off, the animation in the intro moves a little too fast and in the second part of princess pony quest had the sound turned off for a few seconds. I haven't had a chance to watch all the episodes or every dvd so I dunno if there are any other minor flaws and I haven't seen this series for years so I don't know if anything else is gone

I thought the opening theme seemed a bit "off" as well.. at least in my copy, the background sounds are louder than the singing, if that makes sense.

Just the first few seconds, though it could just be my copy.

I had a video that did that once after a few plays. The sound starting fading in and out at certain points.

I finally got my set last week. The intro doesn't appear to have any problems. Since I haven't seen The Quest of the Princess Ponies on it yet, I haven't discovered the sound error. Although the specials are the edited versions, it wasn't a surprise to me, it's unlikely they'd put them on a box set, and there are unedited versions on the specials on Dailymotion.
Although I was expecting the episodes to be restored to fix a few errors (Surprise's mane and tail being almost brown in 'Sonambula'), but ah well.

I don't know, if it's just on my copy or all of them, but there is a short freeze frame issue on "The End of Flutter Valley", where Megan has come to free the Flutter ponies from the bees and tells the Queen they are surrounded. During the freeze, audio goes on normally.

That's a production error, actually. Megan tells Queen Bumble she is surrounded, there is rustling in the bushes while the screen freezes on Bumble for a few seconds, then it goes back to animation. If it doesn't play out like that, then it might actually be a problem with the DVD.

That same error was in the previous version of the DVD and maybe even the broadcast version.
