Title: "About you" survey, English 102 Homework (Thanks)

Thanks to everyone who filled this out. Working on the paper and the customs for the winners.

Yep I'm now going to bribe you. Those that have already taken this survey, you are already entered and have special entry since you didn't need to be bribed :). This first groups includes 1 PM so your numbers may not represent what you think your reply order is. If any PM entries win they will still remain anonymous.

The ponies to be won are, your choice of: MoC Nurse Redheart or a simple random G4 custom by me (likely be a background character or alt gen). Simple= rehair and symbol/eyes repaint. no FBR or accessories. examples  here (http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,361059.0.html)

The drawings will be on Sunday 5th. Approximate time noon.

Hello all.

I have to do first person research for my English paper. I want to get to know the people here on this community forum as part of the research paper. The teacher said to pick something I liked. In an earlier thread, I was asking for help on what the topic should be and everyone suggested ponies. So below are some question I would greatly appreciate it if you would answer. This place is a very welcoming place, so I really hope you all feel comfortable answering with a reply, but I can take your answers via PM if you do not. It may be wishful thinking but I would like to get at least half the members here to reply.

    which ones? did you think it was portrayed in good or bad way? I have read a couple of newspaper articles on collectors, which were generally positive if a little sensationalist. I've read a few online articles about bronies, one portrayed bronies as 'peter pans' or 'refusing to grow up' and others were neutral. I'm sorry but I can't remember the specific sources.

Occasionally I will call myself a Brony. I dislike the idea of calling myself a Pegasister (don't know why...). Mostly I just call myself a Collector.

Read plenty of websites related to collecting ponies (usually whatever specific one I'm chasing). Does DA count? I've used it for references on making ponies along with a YouTube tutorial on rehairing. The sensational "OMG, Bronies!" articles I've seen have great pictures but I often don't read more than a paragraph of such drivel.

Yes.

I honestly thought it was a bit ridiculous.  It went on and on about how these men found a place for themselves in the world - well isn't that what fandoms are for? Plus the ending didn't draw any conclusions about why men like MLPFiM.  It also completely discounted the female fans that MLP has had for YEARS.  It was like all of a sudden since men like MLP, the franchise was "cool."

Your thoughts?  Good or bad portrait of Bronies? It was interesting but I thought it was kind of annoying to watch as if MLP became a thing just because of Bronies.  I liked it for the fact of males being comfortable and enjoying MLP.  I really hated how the one guy kept getting bullied to the point of fear for self because he put MLP decals on his car and liked MLP.

I haven't really watched anything to do with collecting itself or customization. Re 'bronies', I've followed a couple of links that have been posted in threads here (mostly out of curiosity to see how brony pony collecting is being portrayed to the world) but generally I try to distance myself from anything connected with the term 'brony'. Sorry.  Having said that, most documentary/new related representations I have seen of 'them' appear to be positive or at least promote them that way. In contrast, the things I hear and read about people (on other forums) trash talking others over their collecting interests (other generations specifically) and sexualising things.... Grow up people. Always takes a few bad eggs to spoil the enjoyment for everyone else (including other proud-to-be bronies who don't behave like that).

   I've completed 17, and I've got about 10 WIPs at the moment.

    your thought- Good or bad portrait of Bronies?  I've seen about half of it, not sure if it is a good or bad portrait (accurate or not) as I don't really know anyone in real life who is a brony.  I don't think it is very negative, as in, putting them down.

Have you watched or read anything else related to bronies, collecting or customizing ponies.    which ones? did you think it was portrayed in good or bad way?  I've watched some youtube videos about customizing, and also read many customizing tutorials on deviantArt or individual customizer's websites.  I would say it was all portrayed in a good or neutral way - but of course they were all made BY pony fans and customizers!

I've toyed with customs but am very much a beginner, for myself/hubby and a few for swaps. According to my files I've made 13.

I have been in the past but no longer active. Had an old account once at the Trading Post, and was active on the Ponyville board for a few years. I also follow a few pony pages on Facebook but not active on them, just reading.

Yes - mostly just the ponies, but some merch as well that catches my eye. Depending on the merch it's a combo of displayed and stored. If I had the room and setup it would all be displayed, but for now the ponies have display priority.

Hubby and I attended the 2008 Rhode Island pony fair, and this year we went to FanExpo (like Comic Con) - visiting the Hasbro booth and attending a panel with 2 of the FIM voice actresses. I didn't dress-up but did wear pony shirts each day (both G1 and G4 styles).

For bronies: I've read a few articles which were generally unbiased either way.  I've read the discussions about the whole brony thing on the various collector message boards, but I steer clear of places like Equestria Daily and other brony exclusive sites.  I don't care that much about FIM, particularly the show.  All the information I'm interested in(what toys are coming out and where to buy them mostly) pops up here.
For everything else: I own all the MLP toy guide books.  I've been an adult collector in the pony community since 1996, so I've seen beyond countless websites on every aspect of MLP collecting, restoring, and customizing.  I can't even begin to describe how much pony information I've read over the years.

I went to the MLP Fair twice when it was close enough to attend.  I went to Ponypalooza in 2000.  I used to attend ponymeets all over the place.  And I regularly go to SDCC.

Nope.  I don't cosplay at all.

Good lord, yes!  I collect all sorts of MLP stuff, from all generations.  I'm big into accessories, ponywear, ponies, petites, merchandise, playsets, and pretty much everything else.  It's probably easier to list the things I DON'T collect:p

I have a few display cabinets, and what one could consider a "ponyroom", but my house is so small, and my collection is so large(I've been working for 2 years now on counting it, it's that big!), that at least 90% of my stuff is stored in bins throughout the house.  It's in the closets.  It's under the bed.  It's under the futon.  There's pony stuff stashed around the house wherever I can fit it.  Stuff that won't get destroyed by heat is stuck out in the garage.  I've got ponies coming out my ears:p

I've read most of the G1 inventory books (the one by Summer Hayes, one by Debra Birge and The My Little Pony Collector's Inventory: A Complete Checklist of All US Ponies, Playsets and Accessories from 1981 to 1992 by Hillary DePiano)

Loved the first one by Summer Hayes as it's accurate and really informative, the one by Debra is pretty - I got it for the info and the pictures and the MLP Collector's inventory was just full of mistakes and really bugged me. They all showed collecting MLPs in a good light but as they were aimed at those already into collecting MLP they didn't really touch on the subject and this was pre FiM.

    which ones? did you think it was portrayed in good or bad way? As one might expect, the fact that FiM has male fans seemed to draw a lot of attention at one point. While the portrayal in itself was not negative, the emphasis on gender seemed strange to me. The "transformation" of the pony toys from G1 to EqG has been lamented over. Portrayals of the collecting hobby are usually neutral or positive, but not always perfectly informed. Not long ago, the artist Mari Kasurinen was praised for her customs of pop culture icons. That's all I can think of off the top of my head...

No, but the problem with making documentaries about how your nerd hobby is not weird and totally normal, is that you end up making it seem the complete opposite. That's the point of the nerd hobby, it's weird, not everyone's going to do it and a vast majority of the population is never going to understand(and in some cases approve_ your motivations for doing whatever things you do.

    your thought- Good or bad portrait of Bronies? This is a tough call to make. I loved the way the documentary was filmed and put together. It had nice flow and a good introduction to a few young bronies. It showed BronyCon in all its glory. In that sense, it was a decent portrayal of the fandom. But I think there was a lot of emphasis on "not fitting in" with the rest of society and also a heavy lean toward younger fans that may not necessarily be the best representation of the brony fandom as a whole. Films like this are tough to make without seeming off color. I'd say they did an okay job, but it could have been better.

- I watched it just to answer this question xD I think the community is much like the one you se with anime/manga, and many of the fans are drawn to the fandom mostly because they don’t fit in elsewhere. And I think the show focus on G4 fans, the only G1 fan I saw was Lauren. But then again, If a brony og pegasister is the terms for G4 fans, it’s accurate xD I think it was very long at the end and needed more facts about where the ponies developed from. The many long shots from the con at the end was quite boring.

- I think it’s good that people are accepting that all agers and genders are allowed to like something as my little pony. But It bothers me, that when ponies are mentioned, everybody put you in the Brony-box. I have never seen someone represent a classic collector..

    your thought- Good or bad portrait of Bronies? With regard to the movie? It was positive.  My personal thoughts on bronies in general though- different. It used to be very positive, but has eroded over time as I see the Brony community do nothing/seem accepting of uglier fan subparts that are harmful/aggressive/inappropriate towards women and children - but then jump all over people in the media that try to stand up against these ugly fan subs.

    which ones? did you think it was portrayed in good or bad way?  I think just slices/parts of the Brony documentary- as it was being made.

    Which ones? - (I will include Comic-Com as long as you wonder around the Hasbro site a little)  Well I always go to Comic Con- and actually the Sakura Con in Seattle was WAY pony-centered last year-

    your thought- Good or bad portrait of Bronies?I watched it, because I was interested in another fanbase of MLP.  I felt the documentary was one sided and overly dramatized.  I am sure some of these boys and men do have trouble making friends, etc but it just seemed like all bronies are like that and I'm sure they are not.  As we know there are ones who are rude and feel that G4 is the prime generation of MLP and want to bash everything previous to G4.  However, I do like how guys can feel as though they fit in more with the pony loving community.  Not that they weren't welcome before this whole brony thing came about.

   If yes- what year did you start? really, I don't know. I did one custom around 2000-2008? however it tired me, and I didn't try again until last year.
   How many do you think you have made? counting the pretty much done one sitting on my couch, four. I've made more sculptures.

3.5 Yes, I do. Mainly FiM Funkos (Whooves, Rarity and Pinkie Pie) and the Blind Bags. I display them on my bookshelf.
4. Occasionally. I mainly watch the Pinkie-centric eps.

7. I've read a few articles on collecting/maintaining ponies. I can't recall which ones, but they portrayed collecting in a positive light.

Just a bit about myself to wrap up:
I'm a 20-year-old female who enjoys the show and collects the toys for the fun of it. Sometimes I'll do the occasional light custom or modification (painting/removing paint artistically, cutting hair, designing outfits) but for the most part I prefer to keep my collection as-is. I consider myself part of the Brony/Pegasister following and while I haven't been to any conventions yet, I am still fairly active in the local meetup scene and hope to attend one day.

I've known a lot of people who consider themselves bronies and I thought they were good people - they are friendly and approachable, and have even done charity work relating to their pony hobby ^^ I've, of course, heard the horror stories, but it hasn't really bothered me as every single fandom has nasty people in it that try to ruin it for everyone else and I don't think the bad bronies outnumber or are worse than the bad people in any other group.

(As an aside, I will admit that interacting with the brony fandom can be hit or miss, especially where there are a lot of teenagers. Male teenagers, as you may know, are not known for their cool-headedness or rationality.  I think I may have lucked out with the group that I joined a couple of years ago, but for the most part we're not as weird in person as we come across online.)

ok I had to retype the lists in notepad because my Excel decided to stop working. So the first group has 46 entries but only 45 participating in raffle. The second group has 31. The first group being pre-bride has two winner and the second group has one.

I was really hoping to get more entries :(  and I think maybe I should have done a poll questionnaire on pony corral instead. Still very helpful!

I'm a member in some facebook groups that are related to the pony hobby :)

I collect ponies of all generations including blind bag figures. I've also started taking interest on the G1 playsets. I don't collect merch or accessories per se, but I tend to keep the ones I get more or less by accident. My collection is still relatively small (about 400 ponies in total) so I'm lucky to have all my ponies on display. :)
