Title: Anyone collect Serendipity books?
Post by: cloud_weaver on September 20, 2014, 09:09:09 AM
Curious if anyone here collects Serendipity books.  I love them!  I have a small stash myself, been hoarding them since I was young, waiting until my kids are old enough to read them.

I came across an extra "The Grumpling" book yesterday at the store and picked it up.  Would anyone in need of that one?  I would love to swap for one I don't already have.

I don't collect them per say, but if I see them at second hand stores I'll usually buy them.  I don't have many.

I am pretty sure Lady Starflower collects them though.

I collect them and I have an extra somewhere but I can't seem to find it. I'll see if I can't locate it a bit later.

That would be awesome!  If not though, I'd gladly send it to you for the cost of shipping. =)  I just want to make sure it's got a good home where it will be appreciated.  ^_^

I "collect" them....so far my collection includes a grand total of 3 books, I believe. I don't try to chase them down online, but if I see them at a thrift store or a garage sale I'll pick them up.....but so far I haven't had much luck. I had so many of them when I was little! Right now I just have Poppy, Fanny, and....I don't remember what the third one was. I just love the art style though, and when I was little I was a huge fan of any of them that featured equines!

I guess you could say I "collect" them too. I have my childhood ones still, and have recently passed them on to my daughters. I grab them whenever I see them at thrift stores. I have so many fond memories of those books from when I was a kid.

We've got one Collection Book which includes:
Serendipity
Sassafras
Ming Ling
Rhubarb
Zippity Zoom
Butterwings
Memily

and then we have individual books
The Gnome From Gnome
Mumkin (I wanna do a custom pony off of him)
The Dream Tree
Shimmeree
Muffin Dragon
Morgan Morning
Morgan and Me
Maynard's Mermaid
Leo the Lop
Grandpa Lop
Flutterby
Glitterby Baby
Feather Fin
Dragolin

We used to have Lady Rose but I don't know what happened to it. I love these books, beautifully illustrated and each has a wonderful message without being preachy and pushy.

I loved the illustrations as a kid, especially from Morgan and Me!

I still have the ones from when I was a kid, but the other day I noticed a bunch of them in the store (new) so they must have reprinted them at some point.

I have some from childhood and bought a lot of 6 for my friend's little girl last Christmas.  Of course I love Morgan and Flutterby, and also Shimmeree.  I remember bawling over Morgan Morning when I was little.

I don't collect them, but love the illustrations and stories in them. They are beautifully done. I have a tonne of childrens stories, and unfortunately don't really have room for anything that isn't aimed at around five years and under. I use my books to read to the children I teach and find that anything too long winded loses the attention of the kids too quickly. Pretty much something short with pretty pictures, and preferably some sort of life lesson thrown in lol.

I had a few serendipity books, can't remember exactly which ones, but wound up giving themaway due to lack of bookshelf space. And im a sucker for buying any diecent kids booksat garage sales. Im lucky I don't have my own, so my kids technically never grow out of my book collection, I just get new kids to read them to :)

The one I always remembered as a child was Leo the Lop.  Such a cute story!  They have such beautiful illustrations and great morals that I love holding onto them.  :)  If anyone would like to swap for my book, plmk!  These are the books that I currently have:

Crabby Gabby
The Dream Tree
Flutterby
Gabby
Glitterby Baby
The Grumpling
Leo the Lop (tail two)
Memily
Misty Morgan
Persnickity
Rhubarb
Sniffles
Tee-Tee
Tickle's Tale
Wheedle on the Needle

Though again, if I can't find someone to swap with, I will gladly send it to someone for free (just pay $2 for shipping via 'gift'). :)

Oh!  I would gladly trade you my extra Grumpling for your Leo the Lop.  =)  I've been looking for that one. ^.^  If you'd be willing to see any of your extras too, I'd be willing to purchase a few (I don't have Grampa Lop, Little Mouse on the Prairie, and Poppyseed). Just shoot me a pm whenever you get the chance. ;)

This is so cool that I stumbled upon this thread.  I actually loved to books as a child and would try to pick them up whenever I could.  If I see them at garage sale's and things like that I still pick them up.  I don't really collect them in stores or anything. I've always loved the art work in them.  They are so beautiful.  Flutterby was my first book I believe.
Here's what I've acquired overs the years:
Buttermilk Bear
Dragolin
Frazzle
Flutterby
Grampa-Lop
Glitterby Baby
In search of the Saveopotomas
Jake o' Shawnasey
Jalopy
Kartusch
Kiyomi
Leo the Lop
Little Mouse on the Prairie
Maynard's Mermaid
Memily
Ming Ling
Misty Morgan
Rhubarb
Serendipity
Snaffles
Sniffles
The Dream Tree
Trafalgar True
Trapper
Zippity Zoom

Does anyone know if they have a site with all the listed books and pictures of the covers by chance?

I don't collect them, but reading this thread reminded me that my habit of calling people who refuse to throw things out a "Hordasaurus" came from this book:

In search of the Saveopotomas

So I should probably hunt that one down and frame it, since it's had a long-lasting impact on my psyche!

Blonde I use the author's website for my information, I don't know when the last time it was updated was but here it is: http://www.stephencosgrove.com/pdf/Serendipity_Catalog.pdf (http://www.stephencosgrove.com/pdf/Serendipity_Catalog.pdf)  It has pictures of each of the books with a brief description as well as the publishing timeline.

I only had a few as a kid, but I pick them up from yard sales and thrift stores when I find them.  I used the Wikipedia entry on them to make a list of what I'm missing but there are no cover images there.  I did find this list which appears to be complete and has some covers: http://www.listal.com/list/serendipty-books (http://www.listal.com/list/serendipty-books)  I know a couple of titles changed at some point (Leo the Lop Tail 4 = Grandpa Lop) and I think the last book (Puddle Pine) is only available as an ebook.

I'm missing:
Buttermilk Bear
Crabby Gabby
Dragolin
Frazzle
Gigglesnitcher
Kiyomi
Lady Rose
Maynard's Mermaid
Minikin
Morgan and Yew
Napoleans's Rainbow
Persnickity
Pish Posh
Puddle Pine (ebook only?)
Sadie
Sooty Foot
Tail of Three Tales
Tee Tee

I think I misplaced my copy of Shimmeree as well and hope I didn't sell it by mistake (I had two copies at one point).

Somewhere I have a few doubles - just have to remember where I put them.
