Title: Large-eyed flutters
Post by: LittleHoneyPie on August 19, 2014, 07:40:47 PM
Can you tell me anything about large-eyed flutters? Were the large-eyed ones made first, and they changed the mold for some reason? I can't find any info on them, though I swear I saw somebody mentioning it on a website at some point.
I believe there's a large-eyed version of the entire first set. Is there a large-eyed Yum Yum?

Here's a couple of examples. Actually their whole heads look larger.

Please excuse my ugly hands. Why do my hands look so ugly in closeup photos?? LOL

My hands look awful when photographed too, haha!!

I don't have anything to offer but I love seeing those pictures!  Such lovely big eyes.

Out of curiosity do they both have the same hoof markings?  I kinda prefer the small eyed gals, but it's neat to see the differences.

I never knew about that variation! Now I have to take a close look at all my flutter ponies! If I had to make a wild guess, I'd say the large eye flutters were made first simply because the feet markings are slightly cruder on them. The smaller girls' feet stamps look much more uniform. Maybe they were made in different factories and that's the reason?

I believe the large eyed one are also known (unflatteringly) as fat-head flutter ponies.  Here's a link to an old thread http://www.mlparena.com/archive/Forums/viewtopic/p=2434645.html

That is certainly an unflattering name! I will continue to call them "large-eyed." :D  I actually kind of like them better, but maybe that's because they seem unique compared to the regular ones I'm used to seeing.

There seems to be a difference in the body molds as well; look at the crisper hooves on the fa-uh, large eyed ponies! This kinda stuff is fascinating.

Now I'm curious about my Flutters, if I have both versions. The body molds look different,   and the color vary. Maybe they were so popular two factories made the girls.

My best guess is that they came from different factories (or different machines in the same factory).  There are big-head / small-head versions of all six of the original flutter ponies.

I'm not sure if there are variations of the 2nd set (Tropical Breeze, etc).

But yeah, it's most noticeable in the Honeysuckle pose because the small-head version has a waaay longer stride.  It's not a "country of origin" thing because I've seen both versions MIB in both American and Canadian packaging.

I would love to see comparisons of 2 yumyums or even 2 hollywoods (if someone even has more than 1 Hollywood)...

I call them "long-stride" and "short-stride".  Besides the mold differences there is usually slight color variations between them too.  I only have the one style of Rosedust right now (long-stride).  I put a few closer looks under the spoilers.

So are the long stride the large eyes? Or other way around?

I think the long stride ones have aged better, as I seem to find them always in min tier condition versus the short stride are usually discolored.

ugly hands? what are you talking about?
*hands a cookie* they are not ugly!
very interested find. when did you notice?

The ones I call "long-stride" tend to be more delicate with smaller eyes.  The "short-stride" ones are more solid and compact with large eyes.

Ponyfan, yep, that definitely looks like one!

ringlets, thanks for sharing! So there are variations in the second set, too? I didn't know that.

rosierjay, I thought I had read about them on Dream Valley or some such website a long time ago, before I had any to compare!

Thanks LittleHoneyPie. I also have a Rosedust but I don't know if she is a large eyed flutter or a regular one.

Fat head flutters!!! They are a bit of a confusing set with releases. It is a mould change that happened. Oddly there are releases with a different year on the mould as well - you get 85 and 86 versions. The big variations are really only in the first set. Any variations in the second set are just your typical batch differences. :)

I dunno, this picture that ringlets_ posted really looks like the "typical" big-head / small-head difference to me:

I've never seen 2nd set varations before, so this is exciting!  Now I am going to have to look on eBay for more images of flutter ponies.

Hmmm...interesting because it really does. I have never seen of second edition variations to that degree before - I have seen big differences in body colour, difference in hair colour, difference in symbol size but not something as blatant as that.

Its not a pat pend/non pat pend thing is it?

I just realized I have another one after pulling her out of a bait box (and cleaning her up for photos). :)

This is completely fascinating to me.  Hasbro makes two flutter pony molds in large-eye / small-eye versions and then, one year later, makes two different versions AGAIN for the second set of flutters!

I'm just trying to imagine how / why this happened.  I guess someone has to sculpt the molds before they're used . . . Maybe two people were on the job and they each had their individual preferences, or . . . ?

I just don't know, but wow.

It kind of throws for a loop any previous explanations to do with simple progress on a manufacture year out the window. 3 clear versions/moulds of the first set was already awkward enough but now 2 versions for the second set is awesome! It must have been different factories - perhaps for when they were manufacturing for the two main different US and non US markets.

I wonder if all 4 flutter poses were sculpted and prepared together but two were kept aside for the year after? That could explain why both sets had the same variations.

Not all of the first year flutters however got a second year release (although they come in both variations) and both of the second year poses were only released in the same year. If they were released side by side a year to year difference is possible.
