Title: Summer ATC Swap! -All sent!

Welcome to Shaiyeh's Summer ATC Swap!

This time we'll make 3 cards, for 3 persons (one card per person), and the partners will be random.

An ATC is a standard trading card (2 ½ X 3 ½ inches (6.3 cm X 8.9 cm)) sized piece of art, usually traditional. It can be a small collage, a drawing, painting or even scrapbooking-style. It can also be made digitally, but then please print it in the right size and mail it. Most people prefer to receive traditionally made pieces through the swaps, and I'd like to keep the swaps that way.

Crossover theme!
Ponies x a favourite movie, musician, comic book character... whatever you can think of!

Deadlines
Signup deadline - Sunday the 29th of June
Shipping Deadline - Monday the 4th of August. You may ship as early as July 29th.

I will try to get the partners out the 30th of June. This will give you a full month to work on your art. :frolic:

Requirements

- Good feedback! Please provide a link if offsite. Do this in your Sign-Up PM!
Are you a newbie? PM me, and we'll sort things out.

- That you will fulfill this swap. If anyone has problems with his or her swap partner, or missing cards, don't hesitate to PM me!

- That you will mail out on time. If you encounter problems, contact me about them and we can work something out.

- That you are willing to ship internationally.

- That the art is traditionally made.

- an ATC card is 6.3x8.9 cm (2½x3½"). Please keep it to this size.

- Partners are secrets until the card has arrived. Don't PM your partner asking about things, always go via me if you have a question for your partner.

Just a question - do you think one card per person (3 persons) is too little?
I thought I'd start small as I easily get overwhelmed, but I can change that bit if you guys think it's too little.
Also, you may of course send more than one if you'd like.

I dunno, I know some people (pokes BBD and self) LOVE making tons of cards but I know some people budget their time for only a few. With the Christmas card one we did 5, one card for each person and we kept it at 1 card per person so that one person didn't get showered in cards and someone else felt left out because they only got one.

But I dunno its really up to what everyone feels comfortable with. Myself? Make it rain ATCs!

I think that three is a nice number! :)

With less cards, we can really focus on te ones that we were tasked to do, and it wouldnt seem too overwhelming as well :D

I personally feel 3 is to small, I'd rather bump it up to 5 or 6.
But I think it should depend on how many join the swap really.

I'm happy with three cards, I always have a bazillion art projects running at the same time and five ATCs would be a bit overwhelming for me, especially with a specific theme like this that may require some research.

(I'll leave this without a sticky for now, for some reason people generally notice regular threads better than stickied topics. I'll make sure to bump the thread as needed!)

yes, i like making more than 1 card per person, but i can restrain myself to making just one. it just seems a bit silly to pay for postage of just 1 card when a few more will still be the same.

Ohhhh I was thinking it was like a everyone just makes massive amounts of cards and posts them then everyone pms back and forth trading. I was imagining mass chaos of ATCs (and mass droolage) :3

That sounds like a great idea, and I assume there would be guidelines in place there as well, to prevent problems such as drop-outs or unfinished swaps?
I also have a question relating to this swap: is it alright if I glue a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 piece of cardboard to the back of each card to prevent them from bending?

That is what I tend to do, I make mine like a scrap book with thick cardstock (and in my early ATC days cardboard) on the back. 

GUYS this is exciting! I wanna draw some ATCs now! (gee fox why don't you jump on drawing some atcs for your partners in the swaps you're in right now and for the pony convention?) Shhh brain!

After having several days to think about ideas, I sketched out rough ideas then got all three cards penciled in!  I would have probably even started inking but I lost my kneeded eraser somehow (The cats probably played with it and batted it under a couch or something) so I'm going to pick up a new one in the morning. 

The pencil stage is the "hardest" part thats the "most work".  After that, it's just praying you don't make a major mistake inking or coloring.  Then I just got the finish them up and wait for time to mail them!  :D

I have to say, I'm really happy with how the pencils turned out on all three, and that's pretty rare for me.  Usualy I'm cursing stuff I could have done different or better, but I'm pretty happy with what I've got so far!  I think doing a private swap recently helpped me get "warmed up" and back in the groove.

Didn't have any major boo boos with the inks, so all three of mine are drying ink right now.  As long as my markers dont blotch or splatter, I should be home free by the end of the week.

:P I always try to sketch them out around the same size on some cheap notebook paper or something, then lay an ATC paper over them and redraw them onto the ATC paper. That way I don't "waste" my ATC paper on sketches that don't erase right or don't look as neat. (I ended up wasting alot of ATC paper in the beginning by just starting sketches on them...)

I haven't even started on mine yet. :yikes: But I'm on holiday now so I should get them done fairly soon.

A quick note to my partners - I'm out of town until Aug 9th but I figured it wouldn't be a problem as the deadline isn't until the 4th, it would've been pointless to give an alternative address. I just wanted to mention this in case someone ships early. :)

I'm really scared that my partners are going to be disappointed, my cards are literally just drawn and coloured, nothing fancy, yhe art is not even that good... As the deadline gets nearer I'm just dreading them being disappointed with my lack of skill... ><

*face palm* I found an envelope in the crease of my truck seat and realized one set of ATCs missed my lst post office trip. I dropped them off today so they are on the way, they will be a few days later than the rest of my partners' cards. :/ sorry guys

Cards don't have to be fancy. If you put effort into them, it will show. I've gotten cards of all types of skill levels and I love them all. I'm sure your partner will feel the same way. :)

I already got one.. listing "Rarity" as one of my favorites and "Marvel Comics X-Men" as one of the crossover options netted me Rarity as Psylocke!  Would have never come up with that one, but they both have purple hair and it works, it looks really cool.  Looks like I got a bonus of a "Celestia" and "Avengers" crossover with Celestia/Thanos as well.

I'm having issues scanning mine, I hope my partners will be able to get me some better pics. >_< I'm using my parents' computer and scanner, the colours look weird on this monitor and the scanner seems to pick up every single flaw. *sigh* Well, at least my swap partners can enjoy the originals once they receive them. :)

All right, all three cards are one their way! Hope my partners like them, they were tons of fun to draw.
I received two of mine today; that was fast! :whoa:  The first is from babyblueducky, featuring Heartthrob at her House Sorting. So cute! :lovey:
The second is from Bekuno; my ponysona Gambit dressed as Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle! <3 Ironic, as I look like Sophie in real life, lol. She also made a lovely envelope to hold the card in, which is something I'll do for my next ATC swap. Thanks bunches, you two!

Haha yay you got yours too! I really loved how Gambit came out in this one.
The envelopes came from Hobby Lobby and they also include little two piece cards! I'm glad I finally got to use them for something, I had only wanted the cards lol

BlueWolf it was very nostalgic seeing your return address as I grew up a couple hours to the east. I dressed up as Sailor Mercury myself when I was in college back in 1996. I used blue eyeshadow on my hair and it went downhill from there. Glory pulls it off with much more finesse!  :biggrin:

UrocyonFox thanks so much for the double scoop of pony anime artwork! Pinkie Pie looks like she's having a blast being a sailor senshi and you really captured Sakura's hairstyle while still making her perfectly pony! Your Fluttershy card protectors are super cute too.  ^.^

HoneyPaws, you were a super early bird! Teach me how?  :P Sonnet looks lovely as Cardcaptor Sakura and I'm so glad you chose my favorite version of her wand! I think that's the cutest drawing of Kero that I have ever seen.  :) Thank you also for the bonus artwork!

I'm sure you did your cards beautifully. Mine are different from everyone else's as well. I do mixed media artwork so there is next to nothing drawn freehand on my cards. The few things that are (namely symbols/cutie marks) make me cringe but I tried my best and I hope my partners like the results.

When I started receiving my cards I realized there is something magical about someone taking two things you love and mixing them together just for you. I don't think anyone will be displeased with the magic of your cards.

yes, once everyone has gotten their cards and the host of the swap gives the go to leave feedback for who you got cards from.

I'm extremely happy to hear that they arrived safely, after sending them I was concerned that they would be damaged by the postal gorillas. The Sailor Moonstone one was my fourth or fifth attempt at watercolor, and I feel I'm finally getting a grasp on the medium. Glad you like them both, they were fun to draw. <3
I'm going to include a scan of Scribbles as well, not that Bekuno's is bad but this one shows off the colors a bit better.

I was getting ready for work yesterday and my wife was like "You've got some very artistic mail".  I was like "huh?" and she showed me the envelope.  I ended up cutting open the top of the envelope because I didn't want to rip the back.  It was pretty cool.

The Wolverine/Blue Moon team up made me smile and put me in a really good mood going into work.  It's so cool!  I got a couple of bonus cards with Blue Moon that look awesome, and it's really cool to have a couple more pictures of Blue Moon from different artists.

That wooden Frozen card is awesome.

I got my last one today, Wolverine/Celestia.  Trust me, this scan does NOT do the art justice.  It looks so amazing in person.  I think it may be painted? Or at least I think the hair and background are painted the rest might be color pencil?!?  I dont' know but it looks awesome.   I just spent a long time just looking at it, the overall shading and coloring and the highlights metal & claw parts.  Wow.

yay it arrived! :D Actually, the hair & BG is proMarker, the rest is coloured pencil (and the white highlights are acrylic) :3 I'm so glad you like it! I'll upload my scan to dA tomorrow and link it here, its colours are more spot-on. Yours really brought out the green in the lightest shade of blue, haha xD

Yay, I'm so glad my cards arrived and you guys liked them! I didn't have any paper that I thought would handle acrylics, but I did have wood :P But your guys' OCs were too cute,  had such fun drawing/painting them :)

I haven't recieved any cards yet, but I'm not at that address right now - sudden visit to my parents'. But I've told my boyfriend that he must take pictures or scan them once they come in!

I love the movies for what they are: well-made and very entertaining. But I will always love the books most. :lovey: I'm planning a tengwar tattoo at the moment. I've already translated it to quenya, transcribed it, and had it checked by a couple linguists lol. Just need to find an artist. It's my first tattoo. :P

I received my 2nd card today! Sumire made me an adorable Gusty catching a Golden Snitch, thank you! I love the crafted elements (the snitch is made of gold and silver paper cut-outs) and the background paper with the coats-or-arms of the houses is so cool. (Sumire, don't worry if Hufflepuff got cut out from the pic, Ravenclaw is my preferred house anyway XD )

I don't know how many times I have to write this, but I will again: It's not skill that matters so much than effort, time, thoughts and love put into what you make. Besides, what is skill anyway! I love every single one of my cards (and my collection is quite huge after a few years of swapping), and they are so varied in "skill" level. Someone made them, by hand, for me, which means so much, and that makes them endlessly beautiful. Every single one of them :)
So I wish people would stop bashing their own skills, everyone's art is absolutely lovely! :lovey:

Well said! I totally agree, I love every card I receive since I know the sender has made an effort and created something special just for me. :lovey:

Maybe part of this line of thinking (that ATCs are about drawing skills) stems from the certain ATC/ACEO circles where people only make handdrawn cards, whereas I was first introduced to collage and mixed media type cards - there are so many different styles and not all of them involve drawing at all. I always enjoy cards with craftsy elements! Though I do love the personal touch of handdrawn cards, and I second Shaiyeh: it has nothing to do with "skill level", but the love and effort and time that you invest. Something important that I learned when I started making ATCs was that it's not really the end result that matters but the process of making the card. ATCs are all about having fun, so as long as you enjoy what you make, it's all good! This kind of organised trades are a little different, perhaps, but the basic idea of ATC crafting is that with small pieces like this, you can experiment with new techniques and ideas without the pressure of a bigger canvas that would require a lot of time and effort to complete. I'm convinced that if you enjoy making something, it shows in the finished result. Actually this applies to more than just arts & crafts!  ;)

I have no idea how people are able to draw something ATC-sized and make it look like it could be a larger piece (I've seen some on DA that would've fooled me without a description stating they were ATCs/ACEOs). I mean, I think I do reasonably well with ATCs but mine always look their size, don't they? :silly: I don't know how you make yours so detailed.  :iconclap:
