Title: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Violet CLM on June 15, 2014, 11:38:08 PM
:what: :what: :what:
This is weird. I don't remember seeing anything like these designs before, nor for that matter the seller. None of the listings came with more than one photo, so no way of checking for mane/tail holes or anything...

And among their sold listings, a lot that looks perfectly normal until you check the bottom left... (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NzY4WDEwMjQ=/z/55cAAOxyAbxTk7Y9/$_57.JPG)

I don't believe these are legit, I mean the first one looks like it's just coated in metallic paint and the bottom ones are strange. I do think the glitter one is nice but still believe these are homemade.

I did ask the seller for more info on them, but  they were PAINFULLY vague
and I mean  more than just that   vagueness that comes with   non English speaking.

i was however able to get some more photos from them by asking.
still not a lot of info tho.

very odd indeed.
this is the sellers response to me asking if they were customs or not.

" Not yet. Items are production sample. They are not the custom figures.

They are Pony service. "

Definitely knock offs, but they're very well done!  The seller was probably vague because he can get into a good bit of legal trouble for selling them as "My Little Pony".

Hmm the seller calls them "production sample" though, which seems to imply prototypes to me. Maybe some of the factories are messing around with some alternative looks for the new brushables?

Yeah- I think it likely based on their other listings, that these aren't actual prototypes, rather, just the factory making random desins.

There is no way Hasbro would have ordered this fuzzy Twilight, lol!

A'ha! Looks like I wasn't the only one watching those  XD
They are so bizarre aren't they!

Oh wow! Thanks for posting those photos the seller sent you, pyrodarknessanny. How interesting that some of them look similar to the upcoming next Rainbow Power wave. I really do wonder if these are real prototypes or not. Having those rainbow power symbols printed on seems to be the only indicator they might be. I'd especially love to see some of those translucent ones and translucent ones with glitter inside make it into production as new characters someday.
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Epona on June 16, 2014, 09:26:12 AM
The metalic one is a custom fbr. You can see the origional color in the neck seam, a blip in the paint on the chest and a hair stuck on the back leg. It looks really familiar, like one I've seen on here in custom baits .....
The horn on the alicorn is oversized.
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Galactica on June 16, 2014, 09:34:26 AM
They don't look like customs to me so much as recasts, which is incredibly common these days.

Still I'd love those clear glittery ones- if the seller puts out more I'd get them :D
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Wardah on June 16, 2014, 11:42:05 AM
It looks like a weird mix of factory protos and samples. I'm wondering if the clear ones are resin or pony vinyl. The ones with actual factory paint matching soon to be released ponies make me think this person might have factory connections. Maybe the glitter ones are from when they were trying to develop the Snowglobe ponies.

Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: hathorcat on June 16, 2014, 01:10:12 PM
Oooooh interesting! How much I want Fluffy Twilight cannot be described :P

I would initially have jumped on the customs boat as well however I think I could be more persuaded to actual protos or samples. In fact, without Chewbaccas and Twilight Sparkles love child in a clearly opened package, I would have more firmly have gone with the production sample thought. The fluffy TS is throwing me.

As others have mentioned, its the inclusion of some ponies which are almost, but not quite, versions of ponies which we are actually seeing which makes me think they are test items.
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: MikeysGrrrl on June 16, 2014, 01:26:30 PM
I just think the black one is a custom because you can see the purple (I think that was the colour) in the neck seam, hair sticking to it, and it even looks like you can see a hint of purple near the ears just barely peeking through the black paint.

I do love the glitter ones though, very pretty.

ok so dont throw  fakies at me..   but heres what i think.

i think the fluffy one may be a custom.  becuase   if anyone looks  hard enough you cna see the box  isnt sealed.  it'sopen  so it wouldnt be too hard  for soemone to save the box. and   do that and then put her back in the box. and  say it's a 'prototype" and try to get a lot of money for them.    in my opionion its   just a scam  or  fakes for someone who wants money. and wasnt it  already revealed that soem of the factorys   make  extras and stuff  so that people can sell them and make   money.

kind of reminds me  of the    ones   that you switch the heads  from one pony to the otehr and  say it's a  "prototype" or a variant.. or  a diffenretly colored  hair one.  or one thats a "blank flank"  all of these..  things can    be altered  by anyone with the skills.

with all the negativity said  now  i do LOVE  that    reisn/ clear fluttershy. but..  again    theres soemoen   here on teh arena that has the abitly to make those.. so it again wouldnt be that hard   to   make those as well.

Oooh, these are neat! Fake or not I really want some of them.  :P

I think the flowery-plastic ones are interesting, although they could try to reduce the warping on them. And I would love seeing a metallic black pony!

Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes

The thing that puzzles me about the customs idea is that these listings were astonishingly poorly done. One photo apiece, most of them not even named "My Little Pony," and from a seller who hadn't touched eBay for about a year (and before that, more like a decade). And the seller isn't MLP-focused either; they list "prototypes" for Littlest Pet Shop and Hot Wheels and other things I am utterly unequipped to judge the veracities of.

Making those snowglobe ponies would take a lot of work, and if someone made them on their own in order to get a lot of money, I'd expect significantly more effort to be put into selling them...
:what:

Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Marigold on June 17, 2014, 06:16:34 AM
They look like prototypes to me.  The ones that have their eyes and symbols are correctly done to match ponies coming out. Only the plastic is weird. I wonder if these are all test runs for the rainbow line.  I don't know why they would use translucent material then make them solid, but maybe they rejected the idea of it.  The glittery ones could be test runs for the snow globes. Maybe they wanted to put glitter in them at first but for whatever reason it wasn't working and so they went with the watery ponies instead.

The metallic pony might be a hint at what's coming for the fair...a dark pony!

I don't think the gross "fuzzy" one is a production sample, for MLP or any toy line- because why would they pry a twilight out of her package, attach the fur, and then stuff her back in? Just so weird.
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: babylicketysplit on June 17, 2014, 09:52:38 AM
they look fake to me....  anyone who can cast can make something like these.
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Galactica on June 17, 2014, 11:38:54 AM
I don't know if it is just because Taobao has become SO much more accessible to so many Westerners now (through agents or direct purchasing)- but there seems to be WAY more re-cast fake items, and they are looking better and better -

Like those recent fake G4 brushables that are so high quality and flawless that they looked like legit ponies when they aren't... and there are so many now...

It is definitely making it a LOT more difficult to decide whether something is a re-cast or a legitimate prototype or sample run...

But seriously- that fuzzy Twilight, I like some weirdo ponies but that is really really not cute!!!
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: Marigold on June 17, 2014, 12:28:08 PM
Is there any way to know for sure?  No one questions the "tropical pinkie" we've seen before and the pinkie here looks the same. Plus the hair colors look spot on.  And why would you not hair some of them?  I think being hairless and eyeless is an odd choice.
Title: Re: Little Pony prototypes
Post by: LadyMoondancer on June 17, 2014, 01:12:09 PM
My guess would be that these were test ponies, to see how various materials / body applications / would look.

I'm talking about the ones with glitter embedded, not fuzzy Twilight.  I don't know WHAT to think of her, ha ha!

I dunno.  It seems to me that if they were just fakies, they'd have . . . eyes?  And Hasbro would have to test new ideas before making a new run of "glitter ponies" or whatever.

This is where I stand on it. If I had seen everything but not seen fuzzy Twilight, I would be 100% on the test/sample theory. They are too unfinished and a little too complicated to be fakies or recasts. Also were they only listed in quantities of one or two? Its the inclusion of Chewwy Sparkle which is throwing me off.

Hathorcat, you're right.  The seller only had one or two of each and usually fakies come in droves.  I hope these really are prototypes.  I wish they had made the confetti ponies.  I love them.

They have some weird wings up now.  What could they be for?  A pony?

Wow, the flower ones remind me of Flower Fantasy ponies.... And the confetti hearts look like Glow 'n Shows! This is something I would love to see hit the shelves.
But as for Twi-squatch I think it was at least partially a joke. Perhaps the packaged pony was the closest thing when the factory decided to test the fur, so it was grabbed, deboxed and fluffed. Then they decided to stick it back in and sell it as a joke? Hilarious as it is, I hope it inspires somebody to make So Softs, even if they're stolen mold fakies. That would be neat in G4 as well!

What the heck are you looking up to find these anyway?

Also this poor Twilight (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTAyNFg3Njg=/z/qnIAAOSwBadTo9u7/$_57.JPG). The seller has something against her, I swear.

I got a set of these too-  they are identical to the wings on the big talking Chrysalis.  It seems they were experimenting with colors for her, or maybe considering other giant talking ponies with wings..
I would have loved that Talking Celestia with nice wings like the rest :)

Ahh...wonder if they sell some of the old style EQG shoes/boots you know the ones for the peg legs..I'm thinking I could get some and repaint them. My poor peggys don;t have much option with shoes...it's a bit of a Royale Rumble come re-dress time....
