Title: POLL: Do you own/rent your house?
Post by: lovesbabysquirmy on June 10, 2014, 09:50:33 PM
Just wondering how the "environment" and living space affects anyone else's collecting - do you have proper space for your collection/s?  A whole room?  A box?

What would you change if you don't like it the way it is?

I will answer in a bit but will let others go first!  :D

I assume apartment renters can also count?  My collection isn't terribly large and I live by myself so they don't take up much space.  They fit nicely into a small media shelf. Though it was an issue in previous living situations that involved less room and far more ponies.

I live with my boyfriend who is a homeowner.  His name's on the paperwork, but I do pay some of the mortgage.  I am currently working on clearing the small box room which will soon be my pony room. My collection is currently displayed in cabinets in the lounge whilst our DVD and CD collection is all in boxes stashed under tables and things

i rent from my mom.
most of my ponies are in the secret stables behind my desk, the few ponies i have displayed are mostly customs.
i have them on shelves on my wall.

though my blossom army is growing too large.... he needs a bigger shelf. soon as i have cash i'm off to ikea! until then i make do with what i got.

I moved out and started renting with a friend almost exactly a year ago. It's been great! My collection currently resides on the mantelpiece above the fireplace/electric heater in the lounge room, where everybody hangs out. It's a three bedroom house in a fairly average suburb, and we have three chooks and a cat.

My mum owns our house, I say 'ours' as she has told me it is mine to live in too for as long as I want/need. She's hoping I find a man in my late twenties and move out. The housing market in the UK is too expensive for first time buyers now to just buy a house. :sigh:

I started collecting when I lived in the dorms in college, which I suppose counts as renting.  There, I had a metal closet door for my G3s and a shelf above my desk for my G1s.

After freshman year, I moved into the place that my dad had bought for my brother and I to live in while we were in college.  I'm not sure if that counted as renting, as I didn't pay rent.  There is a small chance that I could have managed a formal pony room there, as it was five bedrooms, and the most people ever living there at one time was four, but I was content with just lining one wall of my room with shelves for my ponies.  By the end of my college career, that "one wall" had leaked a bit onto my regular bookshelves and back onto my desk.  I think this is around the time when I started my "restore", "bait" and "sale barn" bins.

I got married the summer after college and my husband moved me to Texas, where we rented a huge house from some of his friends.  There, I had a pretty glorious pony room that I still miss today.  My husband and I have a goal to always live in a house that has enough rooms for us each to have our own "play" rooms - one for him for all of his gaming/computer stuff, one for me for my ponies/office stuff - so my pony room always has my desk and some bookshelves in it.  Anyway, this room was big and open and had enough room for my shelves to not seem cramped in there.  I loved it.

About eight months later, though, we had to move to Florida, where we bought our own house, and I had access to another pretty large room for my ponies, but since we had downsized square footage, we had to put some of the furniture in "my" room which ate up floor space for shelves.  That's when my collection moved into the closet (it spanned the entire length of one wall) and, consequently, when I had a lull in my collecting.  I think it's because I kept the doors of the closet shut most of the time because they were the folding kind that stuck out and in the way of the room if I left them open and not seeing my ponies regularly made them further from my mind :(

Moving to Missouri, we downsized square footage AGAIN but also bought our place - we traded space inside for space outside so that we could keep our horses on our property.  I still have a room dedicated to my ponies, and they're (mostly) all on shelves, but it is CRAMPED in there.  This room is tiny, like 8x12 or something and my shelves take up most of it, floor to ceiling.

So I guess my answer is, no.  It doesn't seem to matter what living condition I'm in.  I tend to make room for my ponies, regardless.  I suppose if we got to the point where we had to live in a one bedroom arrangement, I'd likely box up the majority of the collection to store under the bed or something and just keep a few favorites on display somewhere, but as it is right now, my ponies seem to be pretty liquid.  They tend to fill whatever space I let them into ;)

We are in an apartment area my MIL owns for the moment. My collection stays in our bedroom mostly.

I rent a small apartment, my G4 collection is here with me and a few common G1 and G3.
The majority of my collection is in my parents' house in Germany in my old childhood bedroom (which I live in maybe 2 months of the year).

I have my own office but since it has slanted ceilings and I have other collections, my ponies are spread over an entire bookshelf and another shelf, a tub and a big box full too (plus a tub of baits)...  Would love to have space to display them all but will never happen in our current house.  I want all my crazy (as I fondly call it) contained in the one room.

My boyfriend and I are currently renting an apartment.  We're planning to move into a larger place this summer, perhaps a house, but we're not quite ready to look into buying a home yet.  Our current apartment is quite small, less than 800 square feet, so I don't have a lot of space for my collection.  Most of my ponies currently reside in a Sterilite Storage Cart from Target to keep them safe from the ravages of sunlight and the cat.

I own my home with my husband.  I have a dedicated craft room with a sewing table and a workbench to do my crafting, painting, jewelry making, etc etc.  My hobbies are very important to me.  So since I sort of dominate that space, it has also become my pony room.  At the moment, most of my ponies are in the closet of the same room.  I'm hesistant to display them, only because I'm afraid of them getting out of control and covering an entire wall.  Visitors don't always have the same appreciation of pony armies.

 :whoa:

I chose "I don't pay rent" since I live in a house with my family. I'm lucky that I live in a town with good university so I didn't have to move and since I don't have a job, I don't have to contribute to pay the bills etc. I do hope that I'll find a job short after when I graduate and rent an apartment for myself (or even better, live with a friend).

We own our own home. I have a pony room that I share w/my husbands legos and matchbox cars.
I hope someday we can get our basement fixed up decent so I can move the ponies down there and take up even more space!!

We're currently working on buying the townhouse that we're renting. And the 3rd bedroom is the pony room. It's pretty full, but that also includes a craft desk and my supplies. Once things are settled and we've done the renos we want (new carpet, paint, etc) in there, then I'll look into getting shelves in some of the awkwardly shaped spots, which should help.

Before here, most were stored in boxes or tubs, with a few on the bookshelves. At our last place they were all stored in the extra bedroom, but there was no display furniture. Here we have more closest and storage, so the things we were using for other storage can be used for ponies.

I bought my home and still paying on it. I bought it back in 2005 when I was 20. Still working on the basement and hope to have a pony room. Will have a fourth bedroom and there is only three of use living in the house. We don't have a lot of things in our house so I have room for a collection in it. Ponies are the only thing that I buy a lot of. I a not a big buyer of things. I hate shopping!

I do have a few curio cabinets for them that I found off of Craigslist least year! :)

I own my (mobile) home but I rent the land underneath it XD
I have one extra room that is the BOOK ROOM because my hubby and I collect books. Our bedroom is the pony room, but the FiM ponies started up in the dining room area when those began being released because the bedroom was full! We don't have a huge house but it's enough for the two of us and our collections. We would like to buy our own land someday. Our home isn't really easily moveable so we'd buy a new one to go on the property. If we ever save up that kind of money. XD Having lived in a modular home for over 4 years now, I can safely say that I love it! It's easy living, no high rent or property taxes to pay. Our home is high-quality and hasn't had any problems (it's over 20 years old, too).

We just moved into the place we own. The move came about when the mortgage dropped to less than $600 and we were paying near $1k in rent for a place with a barely working dishwasher, crappy closets, and very loud neighbors. We're very happy to have moved back into our own place again. I got rid of a good chunk of my ponies, including playsets, but I'm very happy with what I kept. I got rid of at least two closets full of belongings too because we're in a loft space - 900 sq.

As for my collections...

Books..I got rid of a bunch taking them to Half Price or Goodwill. I kept my fairy tale ones, the BSC ones, and anything that means a lot or is a writing reference.
Ponies..... we packed them all up but they're going to be displayed on floating shelves all in the hall.

We own.  When we were house hunting I stipulated that I needed a room for my ponies so that my husband didn't have to share with them.  Since we don't have kids, we have our master bedroom, the pony room bedroom, his man room which we use for guests also (fold out couch), plus an add-on attic room I use for my office.  The spare bathroom is used to clean ponies downstairs, and I use the half-bath in my office for customs (rinsing paintbrushes & the like).

Living with my friend and his family in a house that they own. My collections are in a cabinet in my room so it's a little crowded in there. Since my room is small, everything is going to have to spill onto other surfaces since I cannot fit any other furniture in it.

I rent a one bed room apartment. It's cheap, utilities and cable included. Nothing fancy, in fact the apRtments use to be a hotel in early 1940s.

As for my stuff it gets roated because space is limited. Ponies get changed out for books as needed. Right now their all packed up while I wait to get a new book case.

My husband and I rent a 3-bedroom house, complete with a 2-car garage.  But we do have four kids, (2 in each extra bedroom), so I don't have a dedicated room to my collection.  And I'm not fond of having my ponies out in the dining room or anything like that.  So the vast majority of my 900+ ponies and G1 and G3 playsets are in storage in our garage.  In fact the majority of stuff in our garage is my collection.

I do have a small hanging shabby chic-type curio cabinet in our bedroom for a few special ponies.

I would love to have a pony room, but if we continue to live in this area, that is highly doubtful until our kids are grown and move out.  Real estate is just so expensive here (if we were to buy the house we rent, it would easily be over $1M, and it's a standard ranch style house that was built in the 60s).

WOW! Houses sure are a lot were you live, but they are a lot more every were I guess. I live in a very very small town in SD. My house when I bought it was under 900 sqft. We have added another room and bathroom to it. Not sure what is it now though? Still have to finish the basement. I have four bedrooms total and two full baths. I paid $62,000 for my 5 year old house! Yes there might not be a lot of things to do here but I still love it.
Sorry to hear that you don't have a pony room either :(

I rent a two bedroom flat with my husband and our 5yo, so no pony room! My ponies are kept on a bookcase. I recently had a big downsize but not because of space, I just decided I didn't want so many.

House prices where I live are pretty high. There is a flat like mine in my block and it's up for 255,000GBP, I'd want something a lot bigger for that kind of money.

Currently, I am sharing a rather small apartment with two friends. My "room" is the living room, were all three of us have our books, movies, TV, video game stuff, etc. My bed is a couch. So sadly, my ponies are in storage until something changes. I am hoping to move in with my boyfriend eventually, but we have only been dating for 4 months, so it is still kind of soon. I am tempted to just start displaying my ponies in my storage area.

We are finalizing the paperwork on our house but I have massively downsized my MLP collection.  At this point I don't get much more enjoyment out of ALL the ponies any more than I enjoy my childhood collection and a few special ones.

I am kind of heading into a different direction with my collecting now rather than just the BUY BUY  BUY phase.  :)  Eventually I will want to expand again but I want to focus on creating the perfect displays for all my toys!

I've had a collectible space (although my main collections are dolls and figures rather than ponies) in the basements of my last two houses (one of which we still own, but it's rented out while we're out of the country).  In our current space I have a long corridor of shelves for the collectibles that travelled with me, although a good portion of my things are in storage until we're back in Canada.

I rent an apartment so small that I legally can't have any roommates. It's not a bad price for the neighborhood though. Southern California is not cheap to live in, but the fact my apartment complex is basically built for the community college next door helps.

My pony collection is restricted to two billy shelves behind my work desk. It's not big enough that I need ti expand (yet.) My bone and pelt collection is kinda scattered about as decorations. I don't use the flatscreen my apartment came with so I drape all my pelts on there.

We own our home and have no mortgage. We do the debt free thing here. :) I have as much space as I feel like using for collectibles, but I limit myself to a display case in the dining room.
