Title: Do you style your ponies hair?
Post by: zombienixon on June 08, 2014, 01:50:55 PM
So, last night I got a Build a Bear Fluttershy, and I was messing around with the hair to get it detangled so I could get it to look nice.  About two hours later, I gave up and just made the best of what I had.  This reminded me of how time consuming (and frustrating) it can be to style a pony's hair.

So I was wondering, do any of you try to style your brushables to get them to look right, or do you leave them as-is?

As for myself, I like to have mine looking something like they do in the show, and I don't really like the huge "mane longer than the body" look most of them have out of the box, so I'll try and style it.  I have to say it is pretty rewarding when it's all done and you've got a pony looking close to show-accurate, almost worth all of the fiddling around with hairpins, bits of drinking straw and rubber bands. And I have to say, I do a lot better at it than I thought I would.

I guess "look right" is different for me as I don't care about show accuracy.   As long as pony hair feels soft and doesn't have stray hairs all over the place, I think it looks right.  I do fix their hair if it looks messy and that's about it.

I do try to style all my pony's hair :) When I first got my main six, I styled them to be show accurate as well, so I cut AJ,  Rainbow and Twilight's hair, as well as the CMC. Since then though, I don't mind show accuracy as much - I just like them to look pretty. So for the most part, most of my ponies get a simple condition and their mane and tail curled around their legs (or neck, for the short-haired G1s).

I give everyone except for those with original curl left curly hair! Always try my best to also make it as shiny and pretty as possible.

I like toys to have original factory hair - so however Hasbro intented them to be styled will be how they are styled here, even if for many thats a straight out brush :)

I like to style them with hot water so their hair is straight but I'd never cut their hair, at least not anymore. I cut the hair of quite a few of my original G4s and now I'm in the process of replacing them all  so never again!

I normally do.  If their hair is sitting in decent curls out of the package I'll try to preserve that (my Silver Song came straight out of the box with gorgeous perfect ringlets!).  Otherwise I'll wash the hair in hot water to try to straighten it out a bit, and then condition and get it to lie smooth.

I do! G1's are usually styled like they were originally packaged, though if they have longer hair i will throw in curls or flip it up at the tips a little. It's actually really crucial to me that my ponies have their hair looking as nice as possible.

With later gens, i take a lot more artistic liberties. ESPECIALLY with g4's, i try to give them each their own unique hair style since their poses are so lacking. It adds character, makes them all look less like recolors of the same pose to me.

I really like to style them as they are in the show, and I style them for all my friends. I find it fun to figure out how to get it just right. I know that means they aren't very resell-able, but I really like displaying them like the characters.

Same as Elish...I  curling hair! I'm just in the process of re-setting the curly ringlets of Candy Apple and the loopy swirls of G1 Heat Throb!

I would have thought there would be people who wold want a pre-styled pony.  I know I would. Then again, for some, like Sunset Shimmer, that would be hard to do for mass production.

Nightmare Night Rainbowdash and Zecora came prestyled. It was kind of nice, but it left me wanting a bit more style accuracy. I imagine if they released others styled, it wouldn't be quite right.

No. Their hair is fine just the way the are :P
And even if I do style it they're mostly plats/braids, ponytails or buns :/

They're pretty much invaluable in helping me to style pony hair. It keeps it flat where it needs to be flat, curls stay closer to legs, straws and bobby pins are easier to manage, and there's enough of a range of colours to be able to pick the right ones. (They're for sale at the local accessory shop, a big wall of so many different colours!)

I love styling and combing their hair! It makes me smile... My ponies that are in the show are show-accurate, and non show? I give them hairdos for personality! It breaks up the general outline of my herd, making it more fun to look over! I'm personally proudest of Twist. I tried a new method to give her this fabulous look!

I did what professional hair stylists do when they perm your hair: I used tin foil!! I soaked her hair, then took tiny strips and placed them on strips of foil, and rolled it up REAL tight. Once all the strips were done, I locked the curls by blow-drying it while still in foil. The foil made it really hot, steaming the hair and locking it down! Then, I took out the foil and gave her a couple brushes et voila!! Doesn't she look great?

When I wash G1s and G3s they get leg and neck wraps. New out of box G3s and G4s... I actually go so far to keep the "factory look" as to leave in those plastic sewed on hair tamers and rubber band leg wrappers. Don't know why for sure... not ever planning on selling...

Yes all my ponies have to get their hair done. Even if its just going into storage it has tobe done. I like to do different styles for different poses and all different sizes of curls.

These always look adorable. Just as a heads up though, elastic ponyties like these actually break down really quickly and the colour can stain the plastic [body or hair] that they are wrapped against. Just make sure you dont allow the plastic ties to dry out over time and cause you problems :)

Me too!  Nothing beats a perfectly smooth bob like the original 6 have.
