Title: Jocelyn's pony sculptures - Elsa finished
Post by: Jocelyn on May 28, 2014, 05:46:28 PM
Edit: I'm going through these faster than I anticipated, so instead of creating a new thread for each one I've decided to convert this one into one main thread for all my pony sculptures, in-progress and completed :)

Here are my finished sculpts:

Ooo, fun! It's funny you just posted this; I was just wondering what project you were going to do next. I'm loving all these Disney ponies that you've done!

But I only have enough clay left for her ears and maybe a bit of hair D: I have a lot of fun doing these, but I realized that I can't afford spending $17 in clay on each...sooooooo...I may put Mulan up for sale, if anyone would be interested. I'm hesitant to do so because I really am starting out - Elsa was my first finished sculpt - and I make sooo many mistakes :O

I was pouting because I hadn't gone to the art store and only had a bit of clay left...then I found a mini pack of black clay! Yay :D

Her hair isn't baked yet, and she's not painted or primed. I just drew eyes on because I'm impatient XD I'm excited to have her all painted!! I'm really starting to get a feel of her personality now.

Someone's interested in an Elsa, so Elsa pony #2 is underway!

Same pose as the first, but this one will actually have an armature...so hopefully she won't break every time you look at her, like her predecessor does :P

Elsa is really my favorite one I've done so far...but since she was the first, she's just riddled with problems and mistakes. So I'm really glad I get this chance to redo her :)

Thank you, I loved Mulan's expressive eyebrows in the movie. I knew I had to add those in.

Just the hair, tail and the remainder of the horn left to sculpt for Elsa #2, then going to the painting stage..

The original Elsa was beautiful, but I think Elsa 2 might be even better. I am loving these sculptures!

How big are they? How long do they take to make? I have never attempted sculpting but you're inspiring me. Do you have a lot of training or do you just have natural talent for this? (I'm trying to gauge if I have the right stuff to even attempt this.) And if you do commissions please let me know as I am crazy about the Elsa pony like WHOA.

Thank you so much, you guys! Saja, I'm glad you love her!!  :D

They are about the size of a G1 pony, 5 - 6 inches tall. And I think they take about 10, 15 hours to do? Usually I get them done in 2 to 4 days. I've done a few clay ponies before, but they never got far - beyond these guys I've posted here, I don't have much experience with clay. But I do go to art school - Fine Arts major and Illustration minor, so I specialize in paintings and drawings. I find that drawing does help with sculpting though, especially doing sketches of the pose you wanna sculpt before you actually start :D But you should totally try your hand at sculpting! It really is super fun! If you do though, remember to have an armature if your pony is standing up. I learned that the hard way, haha.

And for the next one...Rapunzel's been on my list, so she may be coming ;)

And this isn't really pony or sculpture, but I did this last winter. I just stumbled upon it and want to share :)

I wanted to digitally replicate an oil painting I did last semester, with Anna as the model :D
