Title: Getting the early word out that e-bay was hacked.
Post by: ebmerc on May 21, 2014, 10:18:13 AM
Hey all. I know most of us in the various Arena communities are big e-bay users and the news is just now coming out about this hack. Be on alert for an official e-mail from e-bay and of course be wary of any sort of phishing.
I read about it this morning on the Chicago Tribune and it looks like more sites are reporting the information. I'm about fed up with it all myself. This might be what makes me ditch paypal and ebay. :/

also from the ebay,inc. blog

I also wanted to add that I'm not trying to freak anyone out by posting this. I just love this community and the MHarena and want everyone to be safe and aware. :)

Just attempt to log in - and then it will ask under the password box 'forgot password?'  If you're already logged in, log out, and then do the above.

When you sign in you go to account. Then you click on personal information on the left hand side. It will have your account info there and you should be able to edit it from there. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I haven't received anything from eBay :/ You'd think they'd at least let us know with an email.

I was thinking the same thing. And since this occurred in February/ March, I wonder why it took so long before it was noticed and why it took 2 weeks before they decided to notify the public?

I just saw it on the news here. They said it happened two weeks ago, but who knows. They also said they (eBay) have not noticed an increase in fraudulent activity. My advice is change your password ASAP. The creepers are out there and eBay obviously has not been the only target. It has happened with Target and Michaels here in the US.

It happened in February or March (2-3 months not 2 weeks ago). They just discovered it 2 weeks ago.

it sure is scary...
I just tried to change my password, but got a message saying they are experiencing technical difficulties, and can't process my request.
even more scary  I hope it's just because too many people are using the function at a time. I hope they'll sort things out soon and I will be able to change my password and log in again...

Loona, I wasn't able to log in yesterday, but no problems this morning. I'm thinking and hoping it's just high traffic.

I got an email from ''ebay'', its title says you have to change your password, and the message space is empty, only with the HTML-link.
This is the email address i got it from.

[email protected]

I do not think its ebays offical, i think its a fake. I have emailed ebay about it, hoping to be wrong..
I have never gotten an email from ebay, with numbers in its address, or an empty message.

Please be careful everyone.

hilamb I am pretty sure your right, it is phishing email.  Ebay did finally send a message out but it looked like this and had an actual title in the subject line.

IMPORTANT: PASSWORD UPDATE

Dear eBay Member,

To help ensure customers' trust and security on eBay, I am asking all eBay users to change their passwords.

Here's why: Recently, our company discovered a cyberattack on our corporate information network. This attack compromised a database containing eBay user passwords.

What's important for you to know: We have no evidence that your financial information was accessed or compromised. And your password was encrypted.

What I ask of you:
Go to eBay and change your password. Changing your password may be inconvenient. I realize that. We are doing everything we can to protect your data and changing your password is an extra precautionary step, in addition to the other security measures we have in place.

If you have only visited eBay as a guest user, we do not have a password on file.

If you used the same eBay password on any other site, I encourage you to change your password on those sites too. And if you are a PayPal user, we have no evidence that this attack affected your PayPal account or any PayPal financial information, which is encrypted and stored on a separate secure network.

Here are other steps we are taking: •As always, we have strong protections in place for both buyers and sellers in the event of any unauthorized activity on your account.
•We are applying additional security to protect our customers.
•We are working with law enforcement and leading security experts to aggressively investigate the matter.

Here's what we know: This attack occurred between late February and early March and resulted in unauthorized access to a database of eBay users that includes customers' name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth.

However, the file did not contain financial information. And, after conducting extensive testing and analysis of our systems, we have no evidence that any customer financial or credit card information was involved. We also have no indication of a significant spike in fraudulent activity on our site.

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern that this situation may cause you. As a global marketplace, nothing is more important to eBay than the security and trust of our customers. We know our customers have high expectations of us, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and secure online experience for you on any connected device.

*nods in agreement with Ponylady and Hilamb*  that email  looks fake for sure. Thanks for the warning. I'm thinking a lot of people will be getting these now that ebay is asking people to change passwords  :(

I changed my own password a few days back with no issues :awake:

Ebay answered me pretty quickly.
They say you must change the password by first going to ebay and request it there. They also said not to click any HTML:s, you think is fake. (in short)
It wasnt the same email you guys have gotten, but had most of the same things in it. :)

I changed my password few days before that email.

edit to say, the email is from ebay. Some of the peeps on the Finnish pony forum had gotten the same email and asked ebay about it. Phew. :)
