Title: Hydrogen Peroxide/Bleach & Hair - quick questions?
Post by: Sunshine on April 23, 2014, 11:46:31 AM
Okay so, I have had success in soaking a pony in a hydrogen peroxide solution diluted with water, in a container in the sun, in order to whiten a body. Butttttttt that pony was a bait, with no symbols, no eyes, and no mane or tail. I've also been reading as many restoration tutorials that mention Hydrogen peroxide as I can find, but usually the details are rather limited, or not specifically how I plan on trying to use h2o2.

Now I have another pony, specifically a Rainbow Starshine who I desperately want to try to whiten, even though most of me believes that it might be a lost cause. I don't want to remove her hair if possible (I mean, tail, yes I can remove her tail) - and I don't much mind what happens to her symbols because she's in such poor shape that, I might end up retouching them. My general hope was to be able to use a h2o2 bath like I did for the other bait...

But I have questions!  ^.^ The hair is the biggest thing, I just don't want to have to put any extra money into her by rehairing her if I kill her hair. I'm not as concerned about it feeling really brittle afterwards because I know how to deal with that issue, but will it bleach out any of the hair colors if left in the sun?

The pink, the yellow, blue or green? Is there a better thing I could potentially use to whiten this Starshine?

I've also read certain things about a diluted bleach solution but that chemical -seems- too harsh for my taste.

She will not whiten with typical surface cleaning, she definitely needs like, a big-time soak. What about OxyClean?

Thanks everyone!

You could soak some cotton balls in H2O2, cover her body with it, then wrap in clear foil.
I have successfully whitened / brightened up ponies that way without any damage and I even used pure 30% H2O2.

I went to the local hair shop and got some peroxide there that had been gelled. I soaked some paper towles in that and mummified my moondancer

I tried whitening a Quackers' head in hydrogen peroxide for a few days. Her hair didn't really turn brittle, but the blue stripe did fade considerably. (And totop it off, her head didn't even lighten!)

Hmm, I may try that nice paper-towel idea, and then cover the hair with tin foil...

That's what I'm worried about Calico - this gal is... really bad, so I guess I don't care SO much about the outcome, but, I'd like to find a way to keep the hair from fading! I think Quackers is a very good comparison for the Rainbow Pony hair too...

Thank you both!

This is my starshine sun fading horror story. This is WI sun for about a month in august... (there was no discoloration to her head so it didn't get bathed)

This is my bleach creme horror story (no, I did not do this to her, lol):

Please please please make sure if you're applying any type of creme/gel chemical that you wash the pony super thoroughly, this pony has had her color loss spread on herself (and even so she's in bag quarantine).

Gosh, my stories are short and scary!

I've never h202'd any ponies with hair. As a rule chartreuse hair bleeds and so does sugarberry's color...
I've never oxy'd I guess it sometimes removes glitter symbols.

Thanks mlp

Luckily she doesn't have much glitter left, so, it can't get much worse than how she looks now...

Honestly with the hair I'm thinking the "wrap" might be easiest... wrap, throw in the sun, cover the hair with something and just hope!

I will definitely snap a few photos of her BEFORE I start this. Again, she's pretty bad *like the body in your pic, mlp* so I'm doubting anything will really improve it at this point, she may end up a full out custom if this can't help her, lol!

I've put a pony with hair and paint in H2O2, and only the body was affected. Maybe the hair went a bit dry, but nothing some hair conditioner can solve. If you have a bait with hair and paint give it a try and see

Not sure if this will work for pony hair, but a while ago I swimming on my lunch breaks. The chlorine killed my hair and I was given the advice to put conditioner in it before I went swimming. It creates a barrier between your hair and the chemicals. I don't think it would completely prevent color fading, but it might help.

Good thoughts! As a swimmer I should've known that (swimmer... as a kid, lol) - I remember my mother doing that so my hair didn't end up green after days and days in the chlorine!

Well I'm going to have to go buy more H2O2 before I start, my bottles were all empty! Darn! But I am going to try and employ a combo of these ideas, I mean nothing at all can go worse with her unless her hair falls out, and then she'll find a new life as a custom so - at least I have a plan B!

I am such a chemical scaredy cat sometimes :P

I agree with not putting the hair in - it weakens it, can fade it and can make it brittle :( You can coat the hair thickly in Vaseline and that should work to protect it to some degree if you want to do the H202 soak.

However a chemical peel :P - i.e. wrapped in H202 is a better idea in my opinion - it protects the hair and allows you to protect the symbol if its glitter as well.

Good luck! Cant wait to see before and after pictures.

I am too Cat! Even with this sad case gal I really am having trouble "throwing caution to the wind", even with all of this excellent advice from everyone!

Hi lovelies,

First off sorry for the bump on a fairly old thread.

I was just wondering if someone could help me out with this Hydrogen Peroxide bath story.

Do I soak the pony in pure 3% hydrogen peroxide, or do I dilute the 3% hydrogen peroxide with water before I put the pony in?

:)

Take your bottle of 3% h202 and add one measure for every 3 or 4 water. I'm having great success with Baby Glory in 300 ml water / 100 ml 3% h202, full sun soak for 2 days.

Ponyqueen, thank you so much!

I am trying to lighten a Gingerbread who needs some TLC.
She was playing in the mud a bit too long...

I'll post pics when she's done, of before and after :)

I thought Gingerbread tanned when in the sun?
I'm curious to know since I also have a GB who could use some whitening. and i'm about to put some Crest or Colgate on her

im wondering though if the h2o2 will mitigate the tanning affect, since whitening can be done in such a short time.

I used a similar process as Roseprincess. I just put regular peroxide on toilet paper pieces and stuck them to my Surprise. However, I then wrapped her in plastic wrap. That way the peroxide would be less likely to evaporate. I would just rotate her a bit and add more here and there. I think I helped at least some. It certainly didn't harm her.

I've heard of some stuff called retrobrite and seaglow. I haven't used them though, it says it whitens yellowed plastic. someone recommended it on a transformers forum for cleaning white toys like jazz or prowl

As others have said, be careful with Gingerbread in the sun just in case she starts to tan :)

Thanks everyone for the heads up on the tanning! Didn't realise that GB was one of THOSE ponies.
Uh-oh...

And I live in Africa. The sun is mad here.

Will try other methods mentioned first off. I like the idea of wrapping her in paper towel/fabric strips.
