Title: Have you ever done anything to your ponies that you now regret?
Post by: shimmlight on April 17, 2014, 04:10:44 PM
When I first started out collecting I didn't really consider myself a proper collector, so I gave some of the ponies (Blossomforth, Lily Blossom and Feathermay) styled haircuts. These ponies were cheap at the time but now theyre not, so I really regret doing that  >_<

I also burnt half of Dewdrop Dazzles hair off with a hair straightener by accident once.

I remember as a kid that I chopped off my G2 Magic Motions(?) Ivy pony's hair into a small little mohawk, on the belief her hair would grow back.

....It didn't. ;_;

I also tried to give my early ponies styled haircuts :(

These include: Twilight (before her crowning), Scootaloo, Cheerilee, Blossomforth, Pinkie, Rarity, and Dashie

Also possibly AppleBloom, Honeybuzz, and Sweetiebelle. I have to check. The hair on them doesn't look cut but it is shorter and I can't remember if they came that way or not xD

I regret getting rid of my combs and brushes. As a kid I didn't know they were for the ponies (otherwise I would've kept them)...instead they were tossed in with the Barbie combs, and eventually sold. :(

when I was first trying to clean up my childhood ponies, I gave a hot oxyclean bath to my TE ponies, including Mimic...took the shine right off her eyes and faded her quite a bit!

Then, later on, I sent her off to have her symbols repainted, and didn't know that because of her light color, I should have asked the painter to seal *under* the symbols, so now she has a nice orange halo around them.

When I was a new collector, I gave a Tex with pindot mold/smooze a bath in clorox.  His hair was so brittle afterwards that I ended up selling him as custom bait.

...but the mold was pretty much gone XD

I threw away tons of g1 brushes. I wouldn't personally want them, I think accessories are annoying actually unless it's something cute/distinguished, but I should have sold them.

I also had several Dream Beauties left over from childhood, mainly just had them left and no g1 ponies. Well they laid around on the floor in the old toy room so long and eventually all had a leg broken off. On top of it, I think I threw the leg pieces away because I didn't know how easily they could be fixed. O_O *slaps self*

I kinda regret the hair colors I chose for this restore. Now that she's had them awhile I think they're too light. (Considering she had a buzz cut w/no tail, her face was rubbed across the sidewalk and didn't have eyes...)

I really like her!  She looks lovely with those bright colours.  I think you did a great job!

I gave several of my childhood G1s trims to fix the frizzy ends of their hair.  Now that I can fix frizz with a flat iron and conditioner, I regret that.

My biggest regret, though, was not taking better care of my sea ponies.  I left them in the bathroom cupboard with the rest of the bath toys until I was a teenager, before I was really collecting them again.  When my mom had the bathroom renovated, they did her a "favour" by cleaning up, and threw them out.  Whitecap was in there, along with her shell, and several babies and floats. *sigh*

I let my little sister play with my Waterfall playset and, with her only being a few years old at the time, gnawed big ol' chews on Duck Soup's beak, the comb, and she took a bubble bath using ALL the bubble foam liquid

I mostly regret the fact that after getting Clipper I fell in love with his hair and gave a similar cut to a lot of my ponies. I regret deciding to customize my Sleep Tight with a hot pink nail polish pen when I was little, and I regret that my mum was selling Avon and gave me a ton of lipstick samples which looked like perfect size lipsticks for ponies and I had a make-over day with a few of my girls.

I regret trimming the frizzy ends on some of my childhood ponies, too. And selling my sister's childhood G2s ridiculously cheap, they were complete with accessories but I had just started collecting and G2s didn't seem very popular among collectors - I disliked them too and somehow got this stupid idea no-one else would like them either. :D Well, at least they found a good home and were appreciated by their new owner/s. (Before anyone wonders, I did have my sister's permission to sell them and also gave the money to her. I just wish I'd done a bit more research before jumping to selling and "fixing" my ponies... But I guess these are pretty common beginner mistakes.)

As a little girl I was lovely to my ponies...Barbie and Sindy did not fair so well :P They tended to get some very stylish 80s geometric hair cuts.

As a collector, right at the start of collecting I regret giving Merriweather a new tail rather than doing some more work on her old one. Still kicking myself on that one and still trying to upgrade Merriweather!

When I started collecting I had a very squished Lemon Drop. I didn't know there were ways of reversing this so I used her to test out some spray paint and then she went in the bin.

Two things I learnt from her is a) don't be quick to bait a pony and b) spray paint does not work on ponies.

10-15 years ago when I started collecting ponies as a teenager/adult I customized some of my childhood ponies  as well as some perfectly good ponies that I found at garage sales and the flea market. They were so easy to find from garage sales and cheap at the time that I didn't think anything of it.  >_<

I use magic marker, fabric paint, and nail polish to 'decorate' my favorite ponies.  Many of them got haircuts, especially my 'boys' (which were not boys because I didn't know there were actual boy ponies).  All of them got lovely black horseshoes on their feet with fabric paint, which may peel off but leaves a stain.  All got my initials on their feet.  And many got mold and other things from bath play, especially my poor poor SS Magic Star.  Ironically, I did this to my favorites, so Mimic escaped just about all of it and has a slight trim and faded symbols only.

My OH Clare was too, not only did she keep them in pristine condition, she made her friends wash their hands before even touching them!  :snicker:

When I was little a lot of my ponies had haircuts. My Parasol had this very unique Mohawk which was three different lengths. Sounds terrible (it was) but I liked it. I got some new ponies (new to me that is) and a nice shiny new Parasol was one of them. I gave some of my existing ponies to a friend, including staggered-Mohawk Parasol. I was sad that I'd chosen to give away this uniquely-styled pony and proceeded to re-create the look on my new Parasol. It looked terrible. I regretted giving away the first one AND what I did to the second :P

I tried to cut Dewdrop Dazzle's hair once...
Needless to say, she's now got a long mohawk... *nervously steps away*
As a kid, I'd give my ponies.. uh.. diving lessons. Luckily I only did it a couple of times and when I did, I always squeezed them dry. Still regret it though. Now one of my only non-ponyville G3s is probably moldy, but her neck is glued tight so I can't get it out.

My biggest regret was allowing my Mum to convince me I was too old for my ponies and should sell my whole collection when I was about 12/13. I had well over 100 ponies (all 80's and early 90's ponies), the fan club carry case, castle, nursery, salon, ballet school and a couple of other playsets that  I can't quite remember. All in great condition too, I never cut the hair or drew on them or anything. I wish I could have my collection back, but it's all gone :-( I've managed to get a few G1 ponies back, but they're normally in horrible condition. But I kind of like 'rescuing' them :-)

I was pretty good with my ponies when I was little, but that was mainly from experience . . . I washed my poor Cotton Candy so many times (and then brushed her tail, and then trimmed the long ends) that she ended up w/ no tail at all.  Then I cut the forelock off Baby Cotton Candy and was startled to see the holes left behind.  I remember washing Glory and noticing her glitter was coming off--that's when I wised up and became more careful.  But sadly I got rid of all those ponies in high school except Cotton Candy, who now has a new tail from a donor :)

My main regret as an adult collector is that I put the stable saddle on Lemon Drop for ONLY A WEEK yet that was enough time for her to get faint saddle stains . . . always keep those pink saddles far away from your ponies!!!

Do custom FAILS count?  I've wasted a surprising amount of apoxie sculpt and G4 Stylin' baits custom-ponies-gone-wrong.   I even added a bit of hair to the last one to see if it would improve her looks.  Nope.  Poor Ms. Cakes pt. 1 and 2.

Luckily- assassin_kitty was able to rescue a custom on her way to being a botched swiftwind custom (in progress for 2 years) and turn her into a REAL Swiftwind!!!

I like those earrings, too! Very 1920's Flapper-girl! You should TOTALLY make her a fringe dress and little cigarette palette for her to wear
My biggest regret was not being able to rescue my friend's ponies from her wrath! Every time she was angry at ME she'd take it out on her ponies (her family was much better off than mine, so hers weren't as precious) She had my favourite Ponywear...Hearts and Candy, and she scizzored the whole outfit right in front of me one day! She also purposefully pulled the tails out of her ponies and showed me...I thought it was terrible she was torturing her poor ponies! Luckily my mother never let me bring my own ponies to her place, so her wrath never hit my herd :)

Wow what a psycho!  She obviously did it to traumatize you, I don't care how "well off" your family is, there is no excuse for destroying your toys.  My mom would have been absolutely livid....

She was pretty harsh, but could also be very kind. In the quick to act, quick to forgive life of childhood, I think she actually liked that i would fix her ponies after she'd mangled them. The Hearts and Candy was the only thing I couldn't fix, though i tried my best! My mom had taught me to sew from a VERY young age (like 3) and I often made little yarn haired ponies from scraps of fabric left over from her doing alterations for people for extra money to feed us. I was so upset at myself that i couldn't fix the H+C outfit so that it fit again...

Trimming the front pieces of my childhood G1 Ponies' hair so they could "see" better.

THIS!  The only one I recall trimming happens to be Mountain Boy Fireball, of all ponies. *Slaps self*  I felt so bad for him because his forelock was in his face and he could not "see."  My neighbor was from England and gave him to me as a kid, though I had no idea he was a UK exclusive until I starting collecting as an adult.

Oh gosh... where do I begin...

- Letting my parents throw out the Show Stable. This makes me sad, since I really liked that playset. Though on the other hand, the roof was broken, all of the accessories were missing and most of the stickers were worn significantly, so I don't know if it could've been salvaged...

- Painting some of my ponies with markers. I might've mentioned this already, but there was one point in my childhood where I became obsessed with Native American culture (it was at the time when Pocahontas first came out) - so one day I decided that I should have my pony herd play the role of a Native tribe, and thus I gave some of them "warpaint". Most of them went through it okay, and eventually all of the marks disappeared over time, but some still retain their markings - Little Giggles being the worst offender... :P

- opening up Tuneful - this refers to getting her head loose, so that I could clean up her insides. Because the glue was increadibly hard to loosen, I decided to use an x-acto knife to help the head come off. Unfortunatelly I went a little too far with it which resulted in cutting a little bit into the pony's body.  :yikes:

Though, to be fair, it doesn't look so bad once her head's back on. :P

As a child I gave a few ponies hair cuts. There were a couple where I just cut the frizz off the ends. However, my Bluebelle, Cotton Candy, and North Star got major hair cuts because I wanted to make them boys...

I also somehow got my hands on a razor and tried to deflock my North Star with it. She's got a major gash to her leg and many cuts. It didn't take me long to figure out the razor wasn't going to get rid of the flocking. I wasn't very old and am not sure how I managed to get my hands on the razor! I'm grateful that I didn't end up hurting myself, but so sad about what I did to the ponies.

Using Acetone to clean off dirt on my ponies. I did this when I first seriously started collecting a few years ago. My thought process was "Dang This Acetone REALLY gets off more dirt than a warm scrub does!" I knew it stripped paint off beforehand. I tried to be careful and avoid it but I've smeared some paint on a couple dolls when my hand accidentally slipped. A G2 Light Heart Happy Meal figure is missing paint on her mane and a G3 Rainbow Dash with a pearl necklace printed on her is missing part of her symbol. I've since learned it's just way too risky to try and use it on the whole pony. Just save it for tougher stains. Oh, and pulling on my doll's hair way too hard to remove tangles as a kid. Who knows how much hair I pulled out doing that. If I could go back in time, I would kick myself for treating their manes and tails that way.

letting my step-father make me give up my ponies as a teen, my mother let me keep my favorites but when I 'moved out' they weren't sent to me with my Breyers I had a Quarterback SS Lickity Split Gingerbread and others  can't recall. Recently I washed some Customs as they looked like SS ponies with the dust covering them, 2 of them some hair fell out when I combed them. *hair was dry.  they were my first rehairs I don't think I used enough glue to hold the hair in. I'll see what my other ponies fair as I had to wash them all.

in August I wanted to get a spot off of Cute Curtsey's cuie mark, so I thought that a dab of nail polish remover would be fine. I took off half her cutie mark, and then to add insult to injury, i got paint on her butt when I was trying to repaint it. I'm still devestated about it, she's my baby, and I ruined her. (She still sits front and center of my collection, after I fixed her poor frizzy and disusting hair. ) But even so, she's happier with me than with my sister, I like to think.

I regret not buying more G1 and G2 ponies.

My first experience with customizing was restoring my childhood Sky Skimmer.  I didn't know how to soften her plug... so I cut it off and glued her head back on.  I also had no clue how to remove the marks so I covered her in really thick paint.  She looked really hideous, looking back...
I've stripped her of everything I gave her and want to try something different with her, but unfortunately, it's starting to look like a better idea just to throw her out.

I once melted my bright glows tail and mane with hair straighteners.  They were too hot and a didn't use enough conditioner. ...now she's in a bad state :(

I used a Honeybuzz to make a custom pony. Now I realise she's pretty rare, I wish I'd used an Applejack since their colors are so close!

Reading these stories is both funny and somewhat painful!

I've done plenty of regretful things, but the most regretful:

1.  selling off my rare ponies when I was in grad school and running out of cash
2.  soaking some G1 baby ponies in acetone and forgetting about them = mushy faced pony monsters (they were baits but still)

Trimming my G4 Applejack's mane. She's nothing too special but she is the one with bangs and I gave her the most perfect little freckles... I remember treating the painting like it was heart surgery because I wanted her to look beautiful.
She makes me happy even when I'm not a big fan of the current gen models, but I get so sad when I see how short I trimmed it. I wish I could braid it. :(

I don't think I've done anything regret-worthy to other ponies...

I pierced Bow's ears when I was a kid. I guess I don't regret it though, because it's what makes her *my* bows, y'know?
