When I was younger I read Cornelia Funke books. Now I read authors like Jim Butcher and Stephen King.
What authors are your favorites?
-
Back in the day it was Bruce Coville. Now-a-days I enjoy Christopher Paolini, Lowis Lowry, and Suzanne Collins. I'm not a big reader, I used to be, but don't have a lot of spare time any more I do try to read a few books a year...
-
What genre do those authors write?

I like a good adventure book - so Matthew Riley, James Rollins [] and people like that for me :)
My mum looooves Jim Butcher books - she is very much into that whole genre.
-
When I was younger? KA Applegate, RL Stine, Tamora Pierce, and of course JK Rowling. Nowadays? Tamora Pierce is still on the list, along with Stephen King, Michael Crichton, and occasionally some Laurell K Hamilton or Anne Rice.
I'd put James Roberts on the list but I'm unsure if that'd count. :B

That sounds really awesome. I'll have to read some of their stuff.

For fantasy, Robin Hobb. For Sci-Fi/Fantasy fusion, CS Friedman. For realistic fiction, Pat Barker. For mysteries, Charles Todd. For crime comics, Ed Brubaker and for war comics, Garth Ennis.

Octavia Butler, Brandon Sanderson, Niel Gaiman, Laini Taylor, Maggie Stiefvater... (fantasty)

JD Salinger! My God, that man was an absolute genius. I'm so obsessed with everything he ever wrote. Especially The Catcher in the Rye! Now there's a novel! :lovey:
I'm also quite a fan of James Kirkwood (PS Your Cat is Dead, There Must be a Pony, etc.). I also really like Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and Peter Beagle (The Last Unicorn). Oh, and Arthur Conan Doyle (Shelock Holmes).
-
Ray Bradbury, H.G. Wells, Stephen King, James Patterson, Tom Clancy. Bruce Coville, even though he writes for kids, is still one of my favourites.
Honestly, I'm more of a 'genre' person than an 'author' person. If it's sci-fi, classic sci-fi, true crime, horror/weird, or a book series that ties in with my favourite TV shows, then I'll probably read it.

Alltime favourite just HAS to be JRR Tolkien - can't beat the LOTR trilogy
In the same genre and currently on her third series (I think) is Maggie Furey, similar quality to Tolkien a bit of added humour :)

Beverly Cleary was my absolute favorite when I was younger, I would spend hours with a pile of her books, a snack, and a quiet place to read. Others whose works I enjoy are J.K. Rowling, J.R.R Tolkien, Cornelia Funke, Kathryn Lasky, Diana Wynne Jones, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Jan Brett. They're to blame for my love of fantasy!
I should mention Christopher Paolini as well, whose Inheritance Cycle was one of my favorites as a child. It's very sad that he plagiarized so many other authors, though. </3 (Granted, that hasn't stopped me from holding onto my IC books, they're nostalgic for me.)
-
Ah, a topic I can really get into, I love books! My favourite author hands down is Kelley Armstrong, she writes the Women of the Otherworld series and is a lovely person!
-
J. R. R. Tolkien
Anne Bishop
George RR Martin
Anne Rice
Robin Hobb
-
Tanith Lee. Her Tales From the Flat Earth books are my all time favorite.

Brandon Sanderson (who is a super-nice guy who answers, like, all his own emails), Tamora Pierce, and Patrick Rothfuss currently.
-
Peter David, Timothy Zahn, C. S. Lewis, Lee Strobel, Don Rosa, Janette Oke, Rob MacGregor, Diane Duane, Gordon Dickson to name a handful.
-
I'm seeing so many people say Tamora Pierce which makes me happy! I was wondering where all the fans were hiding because in all the years I've been reading her Tortall stuff, I've only met like two other people who had read anything by her. But I absolutely love her stuff. :inlove:

Ryu Murakami
Natsuo Kirino
Stephen King
Clive Barker

Oh! In that case I'll add Jared Diamond (who wrote The Third Chimpanzee and Guns, Germs and Steel among others) and Fareed Zakaria (who wrote The Post-American World and The Future of Freedom) because they both write in a way that shares piles of interesting facts and opinions without talking down to the reader.
-
Oh just thought of another one! A friend from Germany introduced me to Walter Moers' work and oh man I love his Zamonia books! They're hilarious!
-
I love Tamora Pierce too, but have any of you ever read Meredith Ann Pierce? She's also a REALLY good YA fantasy author, and her imagery is amazing. I honestly like/love everything she's written, and she's been around for 30 yrs. Try her Darkangel trilogy for vampires, or the Firebringer trilogy if you'd prefer unicorns. (Or read both!)
For straight-up fantasy generally considered for adults, I've loved Mercedes Lackey since high school. I want to be a Herald in a Valdemar novel! Lackey is pretty well-known; I'll bet a lot of members here like her too. I think the Last Herald-Mage trilogy was my favorite, but if you haven't read any Valdemar books, try to read them in order, and start with Arrows of the Queen.
And for YA books set in the real world, I love Wendy Mass; her books always have an interesting premise. A Mango-Shaped Space is about a girl with synesthesia, a sensory condition that does things like giving colors to words (warning: this book is bittersweet). And Every Soul a Star is a gorgeous story; some mismatched kids become friends when they meet at a campground to watch a total solar eclipse. Some of her other books sounded interesting too but ended up not seeming as strong to me when I read them. But Mango-Shaped Space and Every Soul a Star were both brilliant!
And yes, I love Harry Potter, LOTR, The Last Unicorn, and lots of others that have already been mentioned, but I wanted to suggest something new. Try them and find a new author you love. :)

Diana Gabaldon - Outlander Series. These have to be my favourite books of all time
Jackie Collins - Okay, I know she writes light-weight trash but I enjoy that trash! My favourite is her Lucky Santangelo series :)
I was once a fan of Charlaine Harris and her Sookie Stackhouse series, but the final book left me so disappointed that I am now a very disgruntled ex-fan.
-
some of my favorites...
j.r.r. tolkien - I grew up with his works and to me, reading them is like "going home".
jk rowling - harry potter, need I say more?
margit sandemo - the legend of the icepeople, a series of 47 books that i can read over and over!
neil gaiman, carlos ruiz zafón, tove jansson, etc...
-
Anne McCaffrey is my absolute favorite, dating back to when I was in junior high and read anything that had dragons in it ;) but I also enjoy Mercedes Lackey, James Patterson, Tanith Lee, Garth Nix and a thousand more! My mother is a junior high librarian, and she feeds my YA appetite so I've read so many it's hard to say them all. I didn't like the Hunger Games, but I did like Twilight. I'll try anything dragons, like I said, as well as magic, vampires, and mythical stuff. And I love L. Frank Baum, once I started reading the Oz books, I can't even watch the movie anymore, it's all wrong! LOL
Now I better stop or I'll really begin to ramble...

Yay another Tanith Lee fan! :D

I don't read a lot of series, mostly individual books. Steinbeck is always a favorite- To a God Unknown is my fav of his but I like all his works, Anthony Burgess, Richard Adams, Radclyffe Hall, Jonathan Safran Foer, Torey Hayden, Anna Lee Waldo.

Bethany Wiggins, James Harriot, T. L. Shreffler, and Erin Hunter to name a few previously unmentioned.
