I know there are a lot of Coin-Op fans on the arena so I thought I'd share some photos I took of a few Mold-O-Rama machines at Chicago's Field Museum yesterday. Most of the museums I've been to have these and I've always been super fond of them. I used to have a Mold-A-Rama toy from each museum I went to, but they were all crushed once when we moved
Since then though I've started getting them again and have a small collection from the Field Museum, the Science and Industry Museum and Brookfield Zoo:

You're really supposed to hold them upside down for a few minutes so you don't drip molten plastic on yourself, but I can't resist LOL
Here's another one- Stegosaurus Mold-O-Rama

At the Field Museum they have about six Mold-A-Ramas and the neat thing about them is that they can change the molds out so that when a special exhibit comes they can offer toys that are related to it. They also usually have the museum/zoo's name written on the base which is neat. I think that's pretty awesome for only 2.00! These machines have been there for decades, but I've never seen one with an out of service sign and there are always lines of people waiting to use them.
So have you ever gotten a toy from a Mold-A-Rama? Do you have any pictures to share?
-
Those are so fun! I remember getting something like that at the San Diego Zoo when I was a kid-
-
I've never seen that before! Looks like fun
-
I've never seen those before! My immediate reaction was "Oh my gosh, I want to find one!" That is sooo cool! I wonder if any of the zoos or museums around here have them? I'll have to keep an eye out for them.
-
I've never seen them before either! I wonder if there's anywhere in the UK that has one :)
-
I've never seen anything like that, how neat! They're bigger than I expected too! With the first pic I just sort of assume thet were like an inch tall.. but they're huge! :D
-
Oh my goodness! I loved those as a kid!
-
Yes, these things are so cool!
-
I love those! In October 2012, my fiance and I ran around Brookfield trying to find all the molds and get them for our oldest niece. I have a penguin (Brookfield) and triceratops (Field Museum) and my fiance has a T-Rex (Field Museum). They are really fun and I always loved them as a kid. I hope they stick around forever! Next time I'm at the Field Museum, I'll have to make a couple!
-
The Henry Ford museum has these :) The one I really recall is the Abe Lincoln one... it is just his head and very creepy haha! I would much rather get dinosaurs!
-
I have a T-Rex from the Field Museum yeeeeeeears ago :D
The Shedd Aquarium used to have some too when I was a kid.
-
I never knew these existed at all, thanks for sharing with us.
-
omg! I had one of these when I was younger... a pink flamingo. I wonder where it is? I love that thing! I wish we had some of the machines around here.
-
Oh AWESOME. I LOVE these.
-
Oh wow! These are so cool! Much better than searching the gift shop for something. I have never seen them so not sure if its something I have missed over here or just something we are lacking!
-
How fun! I went to a zoo in florida that had one of those. I forget what molds were available but we did end up with a kangaroo. :3
-
Very cool^^
-
I've also never seen anything like this. Do you pick the mold and the colour, or does each machine just make the one type?
-
Those are neat! I'd definitely want one if we had those. Closest we have are those coin stamping machines.
-
I have a gorilla from the Knoxville Zoo somewhere around here. I had never seen one until a few years ago, I think they're really cool!
-
I've also never seen anything like this. Do you pick the mold and the colour, or does each machine just make the one type?
It's all pre-set so you can't pick out the mold and color. Each machine has it's own animal/object and color
-
Those are really cool! My only experience with Mold-A-Rama is the tv show Wonderfalls. I want one of those smooshed face lion replicas someday. I wonder if there are any Mold-A-Rama near me.
-
Oh!How cool is that!!wish i had it and was baking some ponies instead of dinos !ho-hoho ^.^
Great pics!!!l
-
WHAT IS THIS SCIENCE?! I MUST TRY IT.
This looks amazing! I have never seen these in the UK and I kind of wish we had them, they'd be fantastic at the Science Museum in London which already has a ton of hands-on exhibits for kids to play with!
-
Those are awesome - I've never seen anything like that!
Well, aside from the penny-printing ones, which I suppose is a similar type of thing.
-
Never heard of this sort of thing before. Very cool! Thanks for sharing your pics!
-
When I lived in IL and now go and visit..I always have to get these..They are awesome..My kids love them...they just remind me so much of my childhood...Now i cant wait to go home and get some!
-
I've saw those machines before. Never got anything from one though.
-
oooh! those are so cool! Iv never seen those either, Iv always just collected the special coin press things haha. but i wish i could find some of those, thats really neat!

Yep- unfortunately there's no choice in the color. They can change the molds in the machines though. The Brookfield Zoo in Chicago has a bunch of these and every Christmas and Halloween they change the molds out to seasonal ones.

Great pics!!!l
I wish! How cool would it be to buy a Mold-A-Rama machine and make a pony mold for it and then bring it to the Fair every year. Okay, someone needs to do this now LOL
I'm guess there don't seem to be any in the UK. There's a blog that lists the locations of some of them http://mold-a-rama.com/index.php?p=1_15_Molds-in-Production but this is only a partial list I think because it only covers places in the Midwest US and I know I've gotten these in other places- at the Memphis Zoo for example.
I'm going back to the Field Museum and hope to get the last one I don't have- the green Brontosaurus. I'll post pics if I get it!
-
I've never seen one or heard of them, but they look amazingly cool!
-
I miss these so much! When I was little my family would make one trip to the zoo a year (at least) and I used to always get one on every trip. The machines were changed out it seems every time I went so I was always getting different animals. I haven't seen one of those machines in years and had pretty much forgotten about them until seeing this thread. I'm going to have to see if I can find if there are any around here still.
-
oh WOW, these machines are cool! I've never seen any, nor heard of them before. it would be lovely to have them around here... we only have machines that press something on a coin you put in them.
when I saw your first pic I also thought the figures are much smaller - it was a big surprise to see their size on the first pic that also had your hand on :lookround:
-
That's awesome! Never heard of them before. Only thing at the museums and zoos around here. Are the squash a penny machines. Which compared to these are boring.
-
I've never heard of these ever and I hope I get to see one sometime so I can play with it! Especially if dinosaurs are involved.
-
How have I missed out on this?! I go to museums and zoos and such all the time! Looks very cool. :) I usually just collect pressed pennies. :)
