Title: Arena artists! Lets see your 2013 summary of art!
Post by: Bekuno on December 16, 2013, 11:39:08 AM
2013 is coming to an end. For you artists, how have you improved? Have your tried new techniques? New style?

Here is my summary of art for 2013!

I'm actually really proud of myself in all honest. This wasn't the best year for art because I was struggling through the second half of the year (changing style but loosing motivation). However this was a good year for character design and development for me. This year I tried working with watercolors a bit, experiment with backgrounds at a few points, and improved my pencil coloring.

I can't wait to see next year and how much better I'll be!

So lets see yours! I want to see how much you improved!

Yess, I love art summaries!

You've improved so much in just one year, Bekuno. Well done! I especially like the pics from the latter half of the year; I'm sorry to hear you struggled with motivation, but it looks like your style has reached a new level of definition. I really like the eye style and the facial expressions!

Here's mine:

I've mostly been doing mail art this year. Some of these are ATCs, some are decos or deco entries. I've experimented with new techniques and it's been so much fun! The May sheep for example were painted in acrylics and white gesso using nothing but my fingers. July & August were mixed media experiments. The November unicorn was painted in nothing more than white gouache; thinned with water it's translucent so all the dark parts including shadows and the eyes come from that dark brown background paper. The "glow" didn't turn out too well, though -- I should've used pastels or something instead. Anyway, seems like white gesso and gouache have been my favoured media this year! I've used both a lot, and gesso is so much fun to paint with.

I hope next year's summary will include some custom ponies again!

Here's mine! ...I'm really annoyed with myself now that I've seen this. Some months I drew nothing at all so I've got two things from the same month across two months on here. And, I've so few full colour scenes, which makes for a really boring summary/review. New years resolution - draw more full colour scenes.

Thank you, Bekuno

Nollilols, I don't think your summary is boring at all! You have a good variety of subjects and styles. I love your Disney art!

Valurauta, nice to see more of your work! (Added you on DA, I haven't realized you've got an account there. :) ) I love your pony style! September is my favourite. ^^

Corona, great summary! I love the papercut style in August & December.

I need to start keeping better track of WHEN I draw stuff. Another problem I had was that I would submit 4-5 months of work all in a week here and there. :/ Alright, 2014 I have a new goal!

Nollilols - I really love your Disney style! Seeing Christopher Robin just made me so happy, and I love that Waldo / Carmen Sandiego crossover in July :)

Valurauta - You have such a cute pony style! I really love how you highlight the hair with the white spots!  :inlove:

Corona - I really love that Alicorn you did in September (Its giving me a vibe, like I know who that is? Is it Marluxia?) and the paper cut Fluttershy in August, I've always wanted to try something like that

If it weren't for the dates scanned on my computer I would have no idea when the drawings are done! xD This year I'm going to be more careful and put in the front of my sketchbooks what day I started them and what day I finished them.

This is how I keep track of them, too. :) For decos and other mail art pieces I actually have separate folders for each month. Cameras should record the date, too, so you can check it when you browse the files.

That is indeed Marluxia (http://rainbow-smashed.deviantart.com/art/Lord-of-the-Castle-400800151)! He's part of my KH to pony wallpaper series. So far I've done Sora, Xemnas, Marluxia, and Demyx.

Thanks to everyone who commented! I love doing the paper style and it makes me happy when I get commissioned to do it. c:

You can definitely see the months where i didn't have too much time on my hands but I'm glad I've improved over this year and branched out!

Love these summaries!  I'm a little sad to say that I didn't actually draw that much this past year at all.  I've been so busy with my jobs and except for my Sunday doodles (I work at the kid's club in my gym on Sundays only and the kids all ask me to draw them pictures to color), there were several months when I didn't do anything.

hey once you have the template how do you get your art in there?

You need an art program, preferably one that allows layers like Photoshop or Gimp. Then you can open each month's drawing as a new layer and crop & resize them as needed. It might be doable in a more simple program as well... but I assume you would have to crop and resize each artwork individually and save them as separate files before you can paste them into the template. It's more work and I don't know if the picture quality can be preserved that way but it should be possible. :)

CrystalJapan, you have some great variety in your pictures! I love the style in Jan, Feb & June. Nice job on the B&W human portraits too!
